  64. Pretty fascinating, as I sit here listening to it (and I'm only up to
  65. the fourth track).  First impression was Pain Killer with a power tool
  66. replacing Zorn.  But it ain't that dubby, just that colossal at first.
  67. But track four is something different... real explicitly in the mode of
  68. Miles Davis circa '73, including organ and tabla.  Eyvind's phrasing
  69. early on is very much in a Miles bag, just little stabs and squiggles,
  70. really, and Kato plows a pretty hypnotic Henderson-style bass groove.
  71. But later Weston starts sounding a lot like Cobham wailing across the
  72. toms, Kato starts to go out with the bass and Kang does some more fluid
  73. playing... obviously a lot to hear here, so for right now I'll recommend
  74. it to the already converted and reserve broader judgement for later.

  79. Title is "Paniots 9" and it's archival material, mostly Maneri's
  80. rejected 1963 demo for Atlantic, made when Gunther Schuller was pushing
  81. the label to record Maneri.  The last track is a longer duet from the
  82. '80s with clarinet and piano.  I haven't heard it yet, but this release
  83. was curated by Harvey Pekar, Zorn fan, Jazziz record reviewer and
  84. creator/writer of the incredible comic "American Splendor."  Harvey
  85. knows more about jazz than I ever will.  (Those who are interested can
  86. find a comic book collecting many of his jazz-related strips, including
  87. one on Maneri, in comic shops right now.)

  115. This is for anyone who's considering shelling out the big bucks for New
  116. York Philharmonic tickets later this week to hear the premiere of Zorn's
  117. piece "Orchestra Variations" --
  118.  
  119. 1. If, when you order tickets you mention the word "Zorn" as your
  120. ordering code, you can get orchestra level seats for $25 each instead of
  121. the usual price which is a whole lot higher.  They won't ask -- you have
  122. to mention it.  And in my opinion this is a real deal for this program -
  123. Slatkin conducting Copland is always a treat, and I've heard only good
  124. things about Joseph Schwantner's Percussion Concerto - Schwantner
  125. specializes in very colorful and dynamic orchestral writing, even if
  126. it's still pretty conservative by modern standards.
  127.  
  128. 2. The piece is six minutes long, if that influences your financial
  129. thinking.  I ran into Zorn earlier this evening at the Knit - he
  130. indicated that he's extremely pleased with the way the orchestra is
  131. playing his piece judging from that morning's rehearsal, but also
  132. indicated its length - "It's only six minutes... it's a quickie, don't
  133. go expecting too much."  I nevertheless expect that he's packed that six
  134. minutes with worthwhile noise.  Let you know Thursday night.
  135.  
  136. 3. And if we're really lucky, Slatkin will call the composer of the
  137. premiere to the stage and we'll get to gauge the reaction of the typical
  138. NYPO subscriber to the longhaired weirdo in the leather jacket and
  139. camouflage pants (he'll definitely be at the opening night performance
  140. and this IS standard practice at a premiere...). ;-)

  163. I just read my own post and found it unclear, so to rephrase/reiterate:  Tim
  164. thinks it's a good thing that Saudades also handles big mainstream bookings
  165. because it makes the venues Saudades works with less likely to go back on
  166. the deals they make with little known or avant garde artists if they know
  167. that by doing so they are jeopardizing their chances to be offered a more
  168. mainstream booking that might be a real cash cow.

  228. like two horizontal infinity signs (the "00"'s with a vertical one in the
  229. middle (the "8"), but it's on Polystar Japan.  I don't see a TimeBomb

  231. Hum?  Anyway, it was fabulously expensive ($28) and I only bought it cause
  232. it looked like a double cd (it's in a clear case and the circular cardboard
  233. backing looks like another cd).
  234. It's pretty good though.  Confirmed Boredoms fans will like it; others
  235. should well be put off by the expense.  Style wise I'd say it triangulates
  236. the difference between Free Kitten, Boredoms proper and _super roots 6_
  237. Bore.  Off-hand in a Free Kitten way, but not as archly "hip"; rocking and
  238. full in a Boredoms way, but not at loud and crashing; "techno aware" like
  239. _super roots 6_, but not as skeletal.

  402. So I've noticed Peter Epstein name pop up on this list more than a couple
  403. of times lately, for the most part in reference to his work wih Brad
  404. Shepik's group The Commuters and the excellent accompanying album, 'The
  405. Loan'.

  407. My question is this:  Has anyone heard anything of a recently released
  408. album by the Peter Epstein Quartet called 'Staring at the Sun'?  I'm under
  409. the impression that the lineup is Epstein on various saxophones, Jamie
  410. Saft on accordion and organ, Chris Dahlgren on bass, and Jim Black on
  411. drums.  I'm quite a fan of all of these guys individually (Saft plays with
  412. Bobby Previte pretty much nonstop and has released a lovely record on
  413. Avant with trumpet guy Cuong Vu, Dahlgren I haven't heard except his very
  414. nice Enja record 'Slow Commotion', and Jim "Mr. Ubiquitous" Black
  415. obviously needs no introduction to this list).

  417. My interest in these players (as well as my newfound accordion
  418. fascination) has gotten me pretty curious about this record, if anyone
  419. has any impressions of it or so on, I would be delighted to hear them.

  476. Probably not because 'Karada Wa Oto O Dasu Mono' is listed in the
  477. January '98 Forced Exposure Catalog (indicating Trigram as the label).

  531. "00800 (eight)" was a 12" on Time Bomb.  Maybe Polystar (same label
  532. that put out the recent Hanatarash 5 CD) put it on disc ... not sure.

  536. I'm thinking you've got the 12", but I'm not positive.  I'm also not
  537. positive that there even was a full-length.  Maybe you've got the 12"

  586. IT is difficult to depart from ones own experience. My first 'trane album
  587. was Giant Steps. I feel like it was a good jumping off point for me, it
  588. being one of my first jazz records. Actually my first ever jazz record was
  589. Monk and Coletrane live at the .... (can't remember.) This is another one
  590. of the greats as well. Heck, just go out and buy as much Trane as possible.

  622. In some ways, I would completely agree with this recommendation. Great
  623. stuff, with Eric Dolphy on board as additional catalyst and foil, and you
  624. can hear Trane really reaching, hard, and stretching the boundaries of his
  625. music. Strong, compelling, exciting music. And "John Coltrane at the
  626. Village Vanguard" was my first experience with Coltrane's music that really
  627. stuck for me. Of course, you've got all that and much more in this set.
  628. On the other hand, if you enjoy jazz, you might want to start a bit earlier:
  629.         Coltrane's work with Miles Davis on "Milestones" and, of course,
  630. "Kind of Blue," is not only essential listening IMO, but also provides a
  631. good foundation for grasping the musical ideas that are starting to explode
  632. in the Vanguard sessions. Under Coltrane's leadership, "Soultrane" and
  633. "Blue Train" are important early classics and great music.
  634.         Among the pre-Vanguard Atlantic recordings, "John Coltrane Plays
  635. the Blues" is not to be missed, though "Giant Steps" is officially regarded
  636. as the classic. The others are great too, however.
  637.         Among the Impulse releases, post-Vanguard, two personal faves are
  638. "Coltrane" (with the blue cover) and "Crescent." As for the more far out
  639. stuff towards the end, "Interstellar Space" is especially strong.
