I had the wonderful privilege to see Masada Live
in Montreal just a few weeks ago, and this new Live
album reminds me of that particular show... In terms
of the set list, interplay, sound quality, etc.
Let me just say that I've got all the official
Masada releases, and this album is possibly the best
release to date! Certainly better than Jerusalem,
Middleheim, Taipei, both in sound quality, song
selections, and improvs, although I enjoy all those
albums on their own terms... I personally think
Masada 8 was the best studio release, and this new
Live album ranks right up there. Nothing quite
captures Masada Live unless you're there in person,
but this new release is as close as it gets.......
...and Zorn's playing has never been more amazing....
Take care all...

Avant is another of his labels though, he released most of the Naked City

Dave Douglas. The recent tribute to Dave Brubeck was also released on Avant.

Hi Artur,
Of course you can upload it.
Even if you want, you can add these Dave's words on Misha. They were
included in a paper note that was on every table in the pub (La Trastienda)
where they played amazing, incredible, wonderful music.
These are as follows:
"Misha Mengelberg is one of the most important composer/pianist/philosophers
of the last hundred years. It is an absolute thrill for me to be playing
many of his compositions with. We will also be improvising together as well
as possibly performing de- and re- constructions of pieces by Thelonious
Monk and Herbie Nichols. Misha is a master of the spontaneous moment, so
much of what happens will be an ever evolving event."
Dave Douglas.
I hope this helps and glad to let know Dave's opinions in your website.

Definitely not. Though he did a couple of interviews here in Argentina, one
in a music radio show and two others in local newspapers, nobody asked him
about Cibo Matto (sorry Patrice, I could have asked him). I guess he was
known mostly as a "jazz musician" and because "Jazztimes" and "Down Beat"
bla, bla, bla, bla...
One more tidbit: as a listener I asked Dave on that radio show if he was
planning to record a solo cd, regarding his version on Brubeck's "Nomad" (In
his Own Sweet Way.- A Tribute to Dave Brubeck - Avant), and after a short
laugh his answer was "no; no; it was funny and easy for five minutes but I
prefer the bands."
Last but not least: he really spoke in a very good Spanish in most of the
interview.
By the way, the show was terrific.

2. Krzysztof Komeda -- Complete Recordings Of Krzysztof Komeda Vol 1 & 2 --
Live In Copenhagen . . . CD . . . 19.99
Polonia Records (Poland), 1965 (2CD) Condition: New Copy | View Cart
2CDs worth of live material by Polish jazz great Krzysztof Komeda, recorded
during his most fruitful period! The set features material recorded by
Komeda, Tomasz Stanko, and a young Michael Urbaniak during a stay in
Copenhagen in 1965 -- and although the trio is backed by a Danish rhythm
section, the sound is all their own, and the work of the two horn players is
particularly strong. Urbaniak's tenor work here is very different than his
later 70s fusion playing -- and it's got a wonderfully edgey style that
reminds us of some of the best sax players that worked with Mingus during the
late 50s and early 60s. Stanko's always been one of the most overlooked
trumpet players of the European scene -- and his playing here has a moody
atmospheric quality that is part Miles Davis late 50s, part modernism of
playings like Johnny Coles or Richard Williams. Komeda's great, as always --
and his piano leads the quintet through long readings of his own
compositions, including "Repetition", "Sophia's Tune", "Kattorna", "Crazy
Girl", and "Dwojka Rzymska". The sound quality of the original recording is
perhaps a bit too live, but the music is excellent, and the set is an
essential addition to the Komeda catalog! (This item is found on the Jazz CD
(F-L) page.)
3. Krzysztof Komeda -- Complete Recordings Of Krzysztof Komeda Vol 3 & 4 --
Live At Jazz Jamboree . . . CD . . . 19.99
Polonia Records (Poland), 1963/65 (2CDs) Condition: New Copy | View Cart
The Jazz Jamboree festival was one of Europe's greatest meeting places for
jazz talents in the 60s -- and although it was held in Poland, and never
received as much coverage and backing as some of the Western European
festivals, it also had the great fortune of being very regularly recorded,
which means that we've got some fantastic audio documents of the excellent
performances that took place over the years! This 2CD set features classic
work by Polish jazz great Krzysztof Komeda -- with one disc from the year
1963, and another from 1965. You've heard us rave about Komeda's work on
these pages elsewhere, and this set is no exception to our great love of his
music. Both concerts are archly modern, with the kind of angular
experimentation that we'd attribute to classic Ornette, Mingus, or Joe
Harriott. And like those more famous leaders, the live performances of
Komeda's group were always worth searching out -- as the strength of the
group meant that they were always taking chances, always breaking out, always
exploring new areas in their live performances. The 2CDs only feature a total
of 5 songs in all, but they're all wonderfully expanded versions of some of
Komeda's best jazz compositions -- including "Dwojka Rzymska", "Astigmatic",
and "Kattorna". (This item is found on the Jazz CD (F-L) page.)
4. Krzysztof Komeda -- Complete Recordings Of Krzysztof Komeda Vol 5 --
Astigmatic Live . . . CD . . . 11.99
Polonia Records (Poland), 1965 Condition: New Copy | View Cart
Great stuff from this legendary figure in Polish jazz! "Astigmatic" was one
of Komeda's greatest compositions ever -- an angular emotional workout that
reminds us of the best late 50s work by Mingus, or of Jackie McLean's
immediate pre-"new thing" sessions, like A Fickle Sonance. The track has a
jaunty feel, with kind of a stop/start approach that moves inside and out,
but always manages to swing at the right moments. Komeda and his group
perform a 20 minute long live version of the track here -- recorded at the
Monmartre Jazz Club in Copenhagen -- and they also play long versions of
Komeda's "Kattorna" and "Svantetic", both excellent tracks as well. The group
includes the legendary Tomasz Stanko on trumpet, Rune Carlsson on drums, and
a young Michael Urbaniak on tenor. The contents are the same as on the other
Power Brothers CD of live Astigmatic recordings from 1965 -- but the
packaging is different, and the CD does not have the enhanced CD rom of the
other. (This item is found on the Jazz CD (F-L) page.)

Hi,
I thought you was looking for info, but apparently you have some good source
of them.... My recommendation would be the studio 'astigmatic'. I've heard
two live 2cds - in copenhagen and at jazz jamboree. Material is really OK,
but the sound quality is rather low. I'd suggest studio recordings of
Komeda's bands. Astigmatic is really incredible, really one of the v\best
jazz records. The music has some structural quality, and compositions are
very originals. I dot know much about the new edition, except
As for other polish bands, there's not much of great stuff. The main player
here is without doubt Tomasz Stanko. His recent records on ECM are really
great. 'Litania' and 'matka joanna od aniolow' (maybe it has an english
title, it's inspired by a polish film) are with a free quintet that includes
scandinavian players. High quality. The last, with similiar instrumenatation
to cgharms of the night sky (+drums), is also very good.
There was a band called milosc, which used to play some nice stuff. They
have made two albums with Lester Bowie. I've only heard the live one, which
was OK, but not that great. NEver heard the studio recordings that were
released few months ago (maybe someone here did?).
Of course, there's the incredible Mala Rzecz a Cieszy project (now reduced
to a duo - some Marcin Gokieli on voacls, words, synths, piano, electronics
and AM radio, and Mikolaj Hernik on reeds and electronics - with guests on
various instruments and vocalists to read the texts), that migrated from
weird jazz to non-idiomatic improv and compositions. But no
recordings are available... despite the fact that somegood stuff was
recorded. ;-)

Subject: new Otomo CD
a new Otomo CD showed up at Other Music this week, Music for DanceArt Hong
Kong's "Memory Disorder" (Sonic Factory). it's divided into two parts, the
first being 24 one minute pieces collectively titled Vinyl Tranquilizer No.
2, and the second being a 27 minute piece called Memory Disorder No. 6. the
one minute tracks seem a little hit or miss to me once removed from the
dances I assume they were composed for, but the long track is one of the best
things I've heard from Otomo, a really nicely flowing piece. I'm not sure
where Other Music (www.othermusic.com) got them from, since it wasn't on the
new Forced Exposure release list, but they're only 14 bucks, not bad for a
full-length Hong Kong import. recommended.
the recent 3 inch CD by Sachiko M., Debris (Sound Factory) is also highly
recommended, easily the most accomplished solo work I've heard from her yet.
and to finish out a troika of sine wave suggestions, the new Zbigniew
Karkowski 3 inch on Mego, IT, is superb. it made me think of what I keep
hoping I'll hear from Francisco Lopez, but never seem to. plus all 1000
copies have different covers, which I think is pretty cool.

For what it's worth, I don't think that it's all that likely that the Vinyl
Tranquilizer No.2 tracks were actually meant to accompany dances of any
sort, at least not if the title is any indication. The original _Vinyl
Tranquilizer_ (a collection of "1minute, concentrated 1vinyl experimental
record" tracks, as the jacket says) was meant as a tongue-in-cheek bit of
sleep-inducing music, which I can't see working too well as material for a
dance troupe.
On the other hand, if I'm not completely off my gourd, I think that the
original _Memory Disorder_ *was* written as dance accompaniment, so this
latest disc is probably a collection of extra bits and pieces that somebody
decided to stick together to round out a full release.

Well... When i got it, i also liked it quite a bit. The idea is great: to
find out what this 'early electronic funkjazz' would sound like with today'
s technology. But - what can I say - the thing is OK, i do not have anything
against it, but i listen to the original stuff much more. That music is so
incredible... Just listen to 'black beauty' or 'dark magus' (as to live
stuff), or 'get up with it' or 'on the corner' (the studio). Nobody has done
such a thing since! Laswell's dubs do not even compare IMH(but sttrongly

That can be true, it is an intersting and profound look at what that music
consists in. You can also see what previous miles stuff is about through it.
Surely better then some kind of 'best miles' etc.

BTW : maybe that's not the disc i'm talking about, I've got the first one, a
