  139. I'm not an expert on the SME and I've quite liked everything I've heard,
  140. but _Karyobin_ is simply one of the most important records in the history
  141. of avant-garde jazz/improvisation.  I'd say it's the one to go for if you
  142. can only get one.  (I'd also be interested in knowing which SME records
  143. others consider outstanding.)

  229. the best source for the art, poetry and theory of Dada is painter Robert
  230. Motherwell's "The dada painters and poets" (Harvard U.). The book first
  231. came out in the 50's and was a GREAT influence on John Cage, John Ashbery,
  232. Morton Feldman and almost any experimental artist who came of age in the
  233. 50's. it was out of print for years but came back into print in thr
  234. mid-80's. there is also john elderfield's Kurt Shwitters catalog from the
  235. MOMA show of a decade ago (there are also recordings of shwitters
  236. performance texts ou there as well) Don't forget marcel duchamp. tho' not
  237. dada, his ideas have a certain correspondence. many books on him -- the
  238. best intro is the philadelphia museum of art's catalog of the 73
  239. retrospective (folks shoulkd go to the pma to see their permanent
  240. collection of duchamp -- biggest in the world

  277. Third Rail will be playing in NYC in mid-September (tentative dates are 912
  278. and 9/13).  Based on last night's concert in San Francisco, I would highly
  279. recommend any NY area fan of Blood, or anyone just in need of an
  280. intraveneous injection of funk/jazz should, should make sure they hit the
  281. NY shows.  Last night was an incredibly high energy show, with some amazing
  282. music along the way.  Blood does no showboating, it's a band experience,
  283. and the band is amazing.

  286. the vocals on this one.

  359.  Not quite! The original Napalm Death line Up was in 1982. The line up on
  360. either of the two sides of Scum is different! They had a different bassist
  361. (who I believe was in Godflesh), side one was recorded about one year
  362. before the second side, or something like that. FROM ENSLAVEMENT TO
  363. OBLITERATION is the best possible thing to get from Napalm Death, the peel
  364. sessions are amazing as well (at least the first two sessions), and Scum
  365. is damn good. Mentally Murdered is good, and the split seven inch with
  366. japan's SOB is excellent.

  481. Two years ago, I talked to Arto and he mentioned that he was the initial
  482. producer of a Carlinhos Brown record supposed to be called TIMBALADA (on 
  483. Virgin France). At one point, the production costs went out of control and
  484. he gave up his position as producer. According to him, the production costs of
  485. the record had reached... 0.5 million dollars!!!

  488. never heard of any record named TIMBALADA.

  529. Each Scorn album is very different, so it's not so easy to say which is
  530. his best one.  Most hardcore Scorn fans seem to like _Vae Solis_ the best,
  531. and it is pretty good ambient oriented stuff.  Personally I think the
  532. earlier material is interesting as well, particularly _Colossus_ (imagine
  533. heavy but slowed down guitars, sampling similar to Ministry, and
  534. obsessively heavy beats).  He did a duo album not too long ago with Bill
  535. Laswell (anybody have any comments on this?), but I've had trouble finding
  536. it.  He also supposedly plays drums and does some sampling work on the new
  537. Pigface album (out in August). There is a good Scorn/Mick Harris website
  538. out there, unfortunately I don't have the adress anymore...if you post to
  539. rec.music.industrial someone there can probably tell you.

  653. The disc you got combines their usual instrumentation of sax, drums and guitar/bass 
  654. (dbl neck) with live sampling and studio manipulations and other methods of 
  655. distorting their original music, hence the thank you list...

  658. 1. Splatter Trio (1st)
  659. 2. Anagrams
  660. 3. Splatter 3+2- Fistful of Dewey
  661. 4. Recombinance

  663. The first two are most representative of what the group does-- mixing up free 
  664. improvisation and tight compositions. IMO Anagrams is the better of the two.
  665. The 3rd is a live set they did wsith an extra guitarist & percussionist, and is kind of 
  666. their homage to Agharta/Pangaea period miles Davis.
  667. The fourth is a limited edition release of a live set performed exclusively with 3 CD 
  668. players-- each player had a CD of his own solo playing, and instead of playing the 
  669. music together with instruments they did it with CDs.
  670.  
  671. Any and all of their stuff is highly recommended to Zorn fans, supposedly they met 
  672. while performing Cobra with Zorn in SF. They are kind of the stalwarts of the SF scene 
  673. at this point, and it's a position they've certainly earned.

  716. punk band and made their debute on a Crass Bullshit Detector comp. Later they 
  717. changed their direction a little and went in on the grindcore thing. So

  734. Sonny, there were  other musicians  he remembers playing with on those
  735. sessions that were also denied  credits on the album. Also keep in mind
  736. that this 40 minute album was cobbled together from many hours of studio
  737. recordings. You can just about hear little bits of Sonnys playing behind
  738. McLaughlins wah-wah guitar starting about 12 min into the piece, then
  739. about 19 min in you can quite clearly here Sonny doing his trademark
  740. guitar wrangling, behind the uptempo funk figure.

  969. I've seen them a few times, If anybody doesn't already know, Napalm
  970. Death was the First GrindCore Band.  From back in the 80's, Metallica
  971. was doing their thing on their first tape and Napalm Death Was
  972. 100,000,000 times heavier but really underground.  For anyone who wants
  973. some REALLY extreme fast and hectice music, Napalm is the band for you. 
  974. ALso, similar band is Carcass (old material) Actually, the original
  975. guitar player from Napalm is in Carcass.  Their first two albums are
  976. very similar but a little bit more metally.  Definitely great stuff. 
  977. Check them out, their called Reak of Putrifaction and Symphonies of
  978. sickness.

  1208.  
  1209. To anyone who likes Splatter's Hi-Fi Junk Note, I would recommend HARDCORE
  1210. CHAMBER MUSIC by Koch-Schutz-Studer [INTAKT CD 042].  This is a Swiss trio
  1211. playing reeds, electric cello, and percussion, with heavy use of sampling. 
  1212. Samples are listed and include Hendrix, Elliott Sharp, Xenakis, Napalm
  1213. Death, etc. 
  1214.  
  1215. There is a band based in Boston called Debris which is also in this
  1216. category of music.  In fact, Debris collaborated with the Splatter Trio on
  1217. a CD of Anthony Braxton compositions, JUMP OR DIE [Music & Arts 843]. The
  1218. artists associated more directly with Splatter in the SF Bay Area are well
  1219. documented on Rastascan Records.  The Sun Ra tribute on that label has some
  1220. wonderful music by a variety of artists.
  1221.  
  1222. A great source for this music is Cadence Magazine.  In addition to
  1223. excellent reviews, the catalog in the center section carries all of the
  1224. music mentioned above.  A link to their website is included in this post.
