For those of you who didn't know, E#/Orchestra Carbon will be performing his
piece Rheo~Umbra @ Context on Ave. A, Lower East Side, this Friday night with
sets at 9 and 11 (so you can go catch Derek Bailey's 9pm set at the Knit and
STILL catch this) I saw the premier last winter, and it wis incredible! Not
sure if it's the same line up, but it was basically E# (conducting and
playing guitar, sax? and his home made- and rarely played these days- "Slab")
with the whole Carbon crew (Zeena Parkins, Marc Sloan, Joe Trump and David
Weinstein) PLUS the Soldier String Quartet and a lone bass clarinet player (?
it wasn't Michael Lowenstern, but perhaps it will be this time) If any of
you have Elliott's Tzadik release entitled Xenocodex, that's a pretty good
reference. If you haven't heard that, think Xenokis. GREAT stuff. Anyone
else planning on going? It would be cool to meet some of you!

Just a correction: Caravan of Dreams is the record label; the album title
is _In All Languages_. I agree that this is the best cheap
introduction to Coleman's work (and also one of his best records) but it's
likely to be hard to find.

Subject: masada kf shows
hard to believe that there have been six masada shows here in nyc since
last friday and no one's given any details yet. i'm not the most qualified
but what the hell.
saw the early show sunday eve and it was as good a masada show as i've
seen. evidently baron's been out sick the whole run so far (although i
heard that he's due back) and michael serene (sp?) has been sitting in on
drums (i heard one of the bartenders before the show saying that serene's
been so good that baron should start worrying about his job if he didn't
make it back soon). musically the substitution is hardly noticeable, serene
does an amazing job on some incredibly difficult music, but baron is one of
my favorite musicians to watch so i missed that. it was interesting
watching zorn direct him sometimes, stopping him during one of douglas'
solos and then pinching his fingers together about 3/4 of the way through
signaling to serene to just add high-hat to douglas' solo.
sorry i can't give you song titles but it was a standard mix of uptempo
tunes with a couple of ballads thrown in. zorn seemed to be in a good mood,
smiling at douglas after several of the songs.
i wish i knew what the last song they did before the encore was. part way
through cohen started a solo and was then joined by zorn, and together they
moved away from the "ornette meets klezmer" of masada into a more
traditional bebop type territory and then zorn took off into what may be
the best solo i've ever seen him play, very emotional, very smooth and very
traditional. i'd love to get a recording of it.
sorry for the sketchy details, but you've still got three more nights to
check it out for yourself.

Subject: Ornette.
If your looking for Ornette albums, withdraw your savings and buy the Atlantic
box set as already suggested. My favorite albums - "This Is Our Music",
"Change Of the Century" (Ramblin' is the tune that first hooked me on Ornette),
"New York is Now" on Blue Note with Dewey Redman - excellent.
Speaking of Ornette - does anyone have or heard his first recording (I believe
it's his first recording - not sure) I believe the album is called "Live at the Hillcrest" and may have been released under Paul Bley's name. I've always
wanted to hear this recording but I can never find it on vinyl and I'm not sure
if it's been released on CD.

there are two records that i know of that predate the Contemporary LPs. One is called
Live At The Hillcrest 1958 and is credited to Paul Bley (on Inner City). The lineup is
Bley/ Coleman Cherry/ Haden Higgins. The second LP is called Coleman Classics (on
IAI) and has the same lineup. I think I remember seeing the same records with
different covers and possibly slightly different titles, but the same music.
