Does anyone know how long Zorn is planning to keep doing his Masada
project? I'm wondering if maybe he'll suddenly stop as he did with Naked
City. Or did Naked City stop releasing stuff because Horvitz moved to
Seatle? Would they have continued otherwise?
And a question about Marc Dresser: how is his Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
soundtrack? I haven't heard any of his stuff at all at all at all, but i
like the one cut from the Caligari album that's on the Knitting Factory
sampler.

I'm thinking of getting some of Zorn's earlier works but I'm not too sure
where to start. The earliest Zorn works I have are Spillane and The Big
Gundown. While I'm asking for recommendations... has anyone heard Ikue
Mori's Garden or Hex Kitchen? I've like Death Ambient and am curious
about her other stuff? How long has she worked with drum machines? Anyone
see her perform?

Open letter to Mister Rizzi:
Hi!
=46ull of woe that the list is slow lately (my silence too is complience)
I am thankful for any traffic on the list, but truth be told,
people asking about Masada #4 constitutes the majority of the traffic on
the list (no offense to the offenders).
I propose a FAQ (an idea lacking originality to be sure).
The FAQ could be one line long:
Masada 4 is out of print. Good luck.
Or more info if collectively, or individually, there is some commitment.
I have unused web space I am willing to donate for it.
I am even willing to do the html.
What think you Mister Rizzi?

Subject: Re: Early Zorn Recomendations?
I'm not very familiar with really early Zorn stuff, but there are three
pre-_The Big Gundown_ albums I would unhesitatingly recommend:
_Locus Solus_: DNA-influenced trio improv, including some improvised songs
vocalized by Peter Blegvad and Arto Lindsay. One of my all-time favorite
Zorn records. I believe this had been reissued on Tzadik.
_Yankees_: More traditional baseball-influenced improv with Derek Bailey
and George Lewis. I'm not sure if this is currently in print, but the
Celluloid CD seems to show up a lot.
_The Classic Guide to Strategy_: Excellent solo improv. I first heard
this one with the Tzadik reissue, and I was very pleasantly surprised by
how well Zorn sustains interest all by himself. He takes a very different
approach than one finds on other solo improv recordings. It's actually
organized similarly to many of his compositions, in that he jumpcuts from
one soundblock to another very rapidly at times, and betrays a marked Carl
Stalling influence.
Also, while it actually postdates _The Big Gundown_, you should certainly
check out the version of _Cobra_ on Hat Hut if you haven't already done
so. It's certainly the most effective recording of a game piece readily
available on CD. I assume that this has recently gone out of print, along
with most of Hat Hut's back catalogue, but it should be easy to find.
Finally, the first, self-titled Golden Palominos album on which Zorn plays
a major role, is a fantastic fusion of downtown improv with _On the
Corner_-period Miles Davis, and is not to be missed. I'm not sure if this
is available on CD.
Happy hunting,

The below information on Bert Turetzky has piqued my interest. Could
someone recommend one or more of his recordings? (I also liked the
Dresser CD, although I suspect anyone who finds the prospect of an album
of solo and multi-tracked bass forbidding would be right to pass this one
up.)

Eugene Chadborne was instrumental in Zorns first release and lived with Zorn

include Chadborne and Zorn.
Also playing will be Pointless Orchestra who have collaborated with many
people including Sleep in Safety, Amy Denio, Joseph Celli, and many others.
Mick Harris even requested sounds from them to use as samples. Eistiens
Secret Orchestra. a band that is one of Ivan Stangs favorites also opens.

I saw a Bobby Previte album in a local record shop (London Canada) by
Bobby Previte with a title along the lines of Blood..Shriek..Mutilation;
(I'm pretty sure that that's wrong, but it gets the general feel). It was
released on Koch Jazz and apparently was a one-man project by Previte for
a film. Does anyone have anything to say about this recording?
I was also wondering about his album 'Pushing the Envelope'.

Hey,
A local store here has bunches of copies of Laswell's fantastic Hear No
Evil disc for 7.99 each (cut outs). I'd be happy to pick up and ship to
anyone who might be missing this (maybe -imho- Laswell's finest work).
This store also has fewer copies of SXL-Outlands.

This is an amazing release. I might point out that it is one of Bill's
favorites. And Nicky Skopelitis, who plays guitar on it, told me that he
thought it was the best thing he ever played on. So skip Sean's "imho"
qualification, this is definitely worth buying.
Also, _Outlands_ is a fascinating disc, with Ronald Shannon Jackson on
drums, Aiyb Dieng on African percussion, a Korean percussion group, Bill and
Shankar on electric violin. Somewhat frenetic (might appeal more to Zorn fans.)
Both of these are at this time not scheduled for re-release, so pick them up.

I'd definitely second Jeff recomendation on _Outlands_
Online store Ponk Records had a good stock of _Into The Outlands_ at a
reasonable price and from memory also had copies of _Hear No Evil_
(possibly on vinyl only) about two months ago. They also stocked a few
other items that would be of interest to zorn-listers.
They can be found at :

I've had excellent service from them in the past.

preserving the night on some sort of recorded medium? (tape, video
camera...) If you are going to try, I would love to get a copy. I'm
going to be there too, but alas, no video camera, or tape recorder.

Subject: Masada in Philly
Just got back from the Masada concert in Philadelphia. It was strange for me
seeing them in this context; it was really a "concert". 6 or 700 people in
attendance, a fairly big auditorium, nice wide stage, bright lights on them,
etc. This show was part of the "InterGalactic Jewish Music Festival".
It was the regular version of Masada, with Dave Douglas, Joey, and I dont
know who the bassist was, it wasn't Greg Cohen like the program said. Zorn
always announces the names when he's ten feet away from a microphone, and the
audience is applauding. Whoever he was, he was incredible. I also noticed
in the program, the "selected discography" which listed records such as Alef,
Beit, Gimel, Kristallnacht, Zohar, etc., and Masada Live- Jazz Door (Italy).
Does John recommend this cd?? You would think he had a little input in the
choosing of the selected discography for the program.
John also seems to be going for a new look, he hasn't had a haircut in a long
time. Give him a few more months, he'll be sporting a ponytail.
