I've been meaning to submit this rec for a week or so. At the risk of
beating a dead horse, let me commend Joe Morris' solo disc "No Vertigo" on
Leo from 1996. Joe has his detractors, but I for one am extremely
enthusiastic about his playing, which I think is some of the most
innovative in a long time. Most folks scramble to find influences for
Morris and declare he has few -- not sure how accurate this is, especially
given some overt similarities to Michael Gregory Jackson, but it certainly
seems to testify to his power. Enjoy.

Dear Listservers,
I just wanted to say hello, as I just got on this mailing list today. I
am a sophmore at the University of Pennsylvania, obviously interested in
the music of John Zorn, the downtown scene, etc. I am wondering, with the
Hanukah and Christmas seasons fast approaching, if people could send out
some recommendations for the best discs that they have bought this year. I
would love to hear some recommendations for any kind of music, such as
classical, klezmer, avant jazz, traditional jazz, whatever, as I think
that the opinions of people of this list should lead me to some great
music. Let me know if this is a stupid question, as I do not want to
upset anyone right away. Well, I look forward to many recommendations and
great discussions.

I know, this might not be zorn-related, but it's kinda close (and to keep
non-zorn traffic off the list, you can reply directly to me :-)).
I've been kinda curious about the Sergey Kuryokhin 4CD box and the 8CD
_Document: New Music From Russia (the 80s)_ box from Leo Records. Read
the review of the Kuryokhin box in The Wire and it looks very much like
something I'd like. *But* I haven't read anything much about the
_Document_ set and can't find anything on the net (guess it's too old
:-)). I'm gonna hit the bookstores tomorrow to see if any guides have it
listed, but thought I'd tap all the knowledge here. So if anyone would be
so kind as to let me know what _Document_ is like, I'd appreciate it very
much....
Thanks in advance,

I think Erik Friedlander's 'The Watchman' on Tzadik is excellent! It's
part of the Radical Jewish Culture Series and the group, Chimera,
consists of Friedlander (cello), Chris Speed (clarinet), Andrew D'Angelo
(bass clarinet) and Drew Gress (bass). It's pretty dark...
For Roberts, I recommend his new disc on Levelgreen which is called '22
Years From Now'. It's his first disc in 3 years and is all solo
improvisations on cello and voice which is really great! Also, Tim
Berne's 'Sanctified Dreams' has Roberts on cello and is probably my
favorite Berne album. It also includes Herb Robertson, Joey Baron and
Mark Dresser.
Dave Holland also has some very beautiful solo cello CD's.

Tristan was part of the ICP Orchestra (together with Ernst Reijseger)
during ICP's 30th anniversary last november in Amsterdam.

Well,
Tom Cora has been busy as far as I know... to me, it seems, working on a lot
of live projects with no recorded trace unfortunately.
As a selection of his recent stuff of interest to this list,
087 - FIRST DESERTER: Umezu Kazutoki
originally on
1995 - Off Note (Japan), ON-7 (CD)
was reissued by KFW.
090- THE UNTRACEABLE CIGAR: Roof
1996 - Red Note (Netherlands), red note 4 (CD)
with Minton, Ex, and Vatcher is a _very_ good CD a bit like the Ex Cora stuff.
Michael Vatcher plays with Zorn on the Spy vs Spy coleman tribute. Roof has
been touring mostly after the record was done so I hope ther'll be another
one.
For people with a feel for crazy DJing , I recommend
Otomo's project (I think it's his)
097 - MEMORY & MONEY: Les Sculpteurs de Vinyl
1997 - Stupeur et Trompette (France) (CD)
available through Cuneiform or Verge for example.

It seems to me that the first Bang on a Can had something for cello and speaker.
Oh, no, that was Failing with Robert Black on Double Bass, which was super
excellent anyway.
Also, my favorite Kronos record is Winter Was Hard, which, for one thing, has an
excellent Zorn piece, also a Piazzolla, Arvo Part and many other excellent
tunes. Way better than Short Stories, I thought. Although the Oswald and Sharp
pieces on SS are definitely something to write your mom about.

It is a guitar/bass/drums -trio.
About half of the songs are dub, the others are more rock/noise oriented.
Not bad, but I prefer Metatron by Praxis.

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but here are some recent
releases which I've found interesting.
Jim O'Rourke - HAPPY DAYS
This album pits Jim O'Rourke's steel string playing against a slowly
growing drone which gains in intensity over the course of about forty five
minutes. Imagine acoustic guitar being swallowed up by walls of very dark
noise. I saw him perform this over the summer and it was quite impressive,
although very taxing. It's on the Revenant label.
John Fahey - WOMBLIFE
Produced by the aforementioned Jim O'Rourke. I really like this album which
features John Fahey's incredibly dextrous playing style against these
strange soundscapes which were presumably created by Fahey and O'Rourke.
I'm not sure how "electronic" the soundscapes are, but it's a good album
nonetheless. It's on Table of the Elements.
ALSO:
Pierre Boulez - ...explosante-fixe...
This album was released in 1995 and features some of Boulez's compositions
for solo piano. The last piece on the album, titled ...explosante-fixe...
is a large composition involving a solo flute and electronics and a chamber
ensemble. It is a very complex work and I'm not entirely sure I understand
it. While I would not go so far as to call it abstract, I would definitely
say that it is following a very hidden logic. On the Deutsche Grammaphon
label.
Karlheinz Stockhausen has many interesting electroacoustic compositions but
they've all been re-released on CD for absolutely ridiculous prices.
Hope this helps,
Jesse

UCLA owns a copy. I read much of it there. It just barely makes sense.
I asked Mr. Braxton about it, and he said he'd written it over a long
period of time and didn't have an opportunity to revise it, so that much
of his terminology is inconsistent. I realize now that he almost surely
did not use a computer or word processor, but actually typed its ca. 1200
pages!
Point being, you can probably interlibrary loan it if you're connected to
a university.
I say read Graham Lock and Ron Radano's books on Braxton and the liner
notes to as many of the HatArt and Arista albums as you can get.
There's an address in Lock's Forces in Motion where you can order the
Triaxium Writings, but I recall that they were very expensive. Also
mentioned were Braxton's 3 volumes of Composition Notes-I don't know if
these ever actually appeared. Anyone?
