  57. A side note to all of these various subjects we've been covering of late. In
  58. the visual arts world there is currently something of a  controversy
  59. regarding the works of gay artists like Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper
  60. Johns. Although people sensitive to "gay" aspects of the work have had clues
  61. for years, and RR never really hid his homosexuality, the critical community
  62. bay and large refuses to address the relevance of their sexuality to their
  63. artwork. This is most evident in the current RR retrospective. Most critics
  64. feel that the sexual orientation of these artists had no influence on their
  65. work, yet a few critics are beginning to point out some of these influences.
  66. Now all of this is interesting in light of the _context_ that is so
  67. important in our understanding of any artwork (incl. music). One can argue
  68. that without appreciating all of the context for the work, we are not
  69. getting the fullest possible "depth" out of that work. Others may argue that
  70. in picking out the "gayness" in art, we lose the "universality" that makes
  71. great artwork great. I side with the former.
  72.         However, when addressing the issue of jewish identity this becomes
  73. more problematic. Because while I don't believe that being gay is a
  74. "lifestyle choice," it can't help but be part of one's self identity. Where
  75. being jewish according to the Nazis might be an irrovacable identity, for
  76. most people they have some say in how they define their own jewish identity.
  77. Look at Madeline Albright, is she jewish? If she were a musician would she
  78. be part of Zorn's great Jewish music, only after she discovered her
  79. background but not before? As others here have already mentioned, I think
  80. that JZ is very purposefully drawing attention to jewish identity in a
  81. political manner. I would argue that it is simply not very clearly thought
  82. out. If neither the musician nor any critical assesment draws any
  83. relationship between the work and the "jewishness," than to me it becomes a
  84. moot issue, and frankly a totally arbitrary one on JZ's part.
  85.         Obviously being black, certainly in this country, is an aspect of
  86. one's identity with an influence difficult to ignore. I would argue that for
  87. many in this polarized country, being white is in part defined as not being
  88. black. However, although many black musicians accept that their color has
  89. influenced their work, their must be (or there will be, I'm no music
  90. historian) black musicians for whom their color (that is all of the
  91. socio-political-economic influences which usually but not always affect
  92. blacks in this country) really has not influence on their work. And if they
  93. were in a series called great black music I'd argue that that is totally
  94. inapproriate and arbitrary.

  179.  While his soundtrack work isn't as nearly as enjoyable as his other work
  180. the early soundtracks are worth a listen. 
  181.  
  182.  The ones worth checking out...."The Kiss and Other Movements", "Prospero's
  183. Books", "Drowning by Numbers", "A Zed and Two Noughts", and "the Cook the
  184. Thief His Wife & Her Lover". 
  185.  
  186.   "6 Days 6 Nights", "the Piano", "Carrington", and "Gattica" are really
  187. worthless. 
  188.  
  189.  Those are the only soundtracks I've heard by him....
  190.  
  191.  A solid disc that touches on a few of my favorite pieces is "Live", which
  192. includes pieces from "The Draughtsman's Contract", "Water Dances", and "The
  193. Upside-Down Violin". There is also a performance with a Moroccan group on
  194. the "The Upside-Down Violin" that is really great. 
  195.  
  196.  I tend to like the non-soundtrack stuff more, "Time Will Pronounce",
  197. "Noises, Sounds & Sweet Airs", "After Extra Time" , plus the first record
  198. on Piano Records are really places to start.

  230. I think I understand what Zorn's doing here differently than you.  I don't
  231. see him as acting as a critic, but as an artist.  That means he doesn't
  232. need to be entirely clear (or even have a definite view); it's the job of
  233. the audience to figure things out for ourselves.  And it's obviously not
  234. entirely arbitrary because the musicians he's selecting are Jewish.  If he
  235. comes out with a collection of Toru Takemitsu interpretations, that'll be
  236. arbitrary.

  258. Ok, I think I proved my point. I got 2 responses like this, so I must ask
  259. (more forcefully this time) why the hell was everyone talking about him
  260. when there is no link between him and the man who this list is meant to be
  261. about?

  263. Just a note, when I said "mild similarities" I meant that both have written
  264. for soundtracks as well as stand-alone work, both are male, both are human
  265. beings, etc. If these aren't mild similarities then I don't know what are.
  266. Now I would understand your response if I had actually written "obvious,
  267. fucking huge similarities".

  392. originally on Antilles. A superior LP to _ER_, but Sharrock-free (and

  411. In light of the current discussion about mail-order and the CD situation
  412. in
  413. general,  readers may be interested in the following.  A one-year
  414. initiative
  415. has been evolving that has included over 20 independent CD companies
  416. working
  417. in the area of new music.  This loosely constructed, "Consortium of
  418. Independent Record Producers" has come together to attempt to deal with
  419. direct mail and mail order in some meaningful way.  With the application
  420. of
  421. direct mail communications the group has been issuing a catalog of new
  422. music
  423. releases every two months for the past year with modest results. The
  424. mailings
  425. have generally been in the 15-18,000 persons range.  The most recent
  426. catalog
  427. went out at the beginning of November and we are beginning to see
  428. results
  429. from this work.  The catalog has more than 175 new music discs listed
  430. from 15
  431. different companies.  The catalog is far beyond what any one company can
  432. be
  433. doing in either regularity of mailing and number of copies that are sent
  434. out.
  435.  We are planning to evaluate this work at the end of January to see if
  436. it is
  437. worth continuing to issue the catalog.  Among the participants have been
  438. Artifact, CRI, Deep Listening, Einstein, Frog Peak, Knitting Factory,
  439. Lovely

  473. This sounds pretty accurate to me... Zorn surrounds himself with down to
  474. earth, nice people.  Look at every one in Masada. They are all extremely nice
  475. guys.  Same goes for everyone in Naked City.  And everyone else he's been
  476. playing with lately.. Anthony Coleman, Marc Ribot... these are all great
  477. musicians of the highest caliber, but why is it you dont see Zorn paired with
  478. someone like Cecil Taylor?  I'm not saying there's anything wrong with this,
  479. (I'm not calling anyone a control freak..) it just seems that Zorn mostly
  480. works with easy going-type people.

  492. I picked up Mark Dresser's BANQUET (TZ 7027), a Tzadik new release, the
  493. other day so I thought I'd share some thoughts with you all.
  494.  
  495. First off, the cover art is really beautiful. In the liner notes, it's
  496. credited to "Ligorano/Resse". ?????
  497.  
  498. Anyway, the disc has two of Mark Dresser's chamber works - "Banquet" and
  499. "Loss of the Innocents". It's comparable in style to Arcado String Trio
  500. or Erik Friedlander's Chimera. However, they never peak in their
  501. intensity and I find the compositions to be fragmented and sort of weak
  502. due to the improv. I was wondering if anyone else had any thoughts on
  503. this one?

  505. Regardless, Dresser's solo album 'Invocation' is one of the finest solo
  506. bass albums I've ever heard.

  578. I have the Live from the Knit cd and I think that it is pretty cool.  But
  579. I was curious about this myself.  I've had the opportunity to buy the
  580. Tokyo Operations 94 (84?) disc a coupla times, but I've been unsure as to
  581. my enjoyment.  And after Nani Nani and Filmworks VII, I've been even more
  582. cautious.

  631. Yes, at an amazing Dave Douglas/Han Bennink- gig last friday, 
  632. Douglas was singing and screaming in his microphone, using a table full of
  633. effect devices. He also played his trumpet through these effects: sounding
  634. sometimes like Jon Hassel, sometimes like the seventies Miles and 
  635. sometimes like a plane-crash. He also used tapes and CD-players.
  636. This was a yet an other, very unusual side of this great artist 
  637. (much to the surprise of the audience that was expecting Masada-tunes)
