Subject: (yello) BT and cd-rom
Date: 01 Oct 1998 15:19:02 +0200
Hoi!
Good news! My cd-rom finally pulled through. It's not working very
stable at the moment, but it's working.
I hope to be able to make a list of my Yello-mp3-tracks in a short
while now. As soon as it's finished, I'll notify the mailinglist.
Today I've put a track by "BT" called "Divinity" on my site.
It's a real good track, but if it's not your style, just skip to about 9
minutes and 30 secs. There you'll find a Yello-sample from Celsius.
Groeven,
Olaf.

Hey, what your web site address. I like BT and have a major collection if anyone
is interested. I think he ranks up there with Yello. Im still Looking for the
German release 12" of Too the Sea if anyone can find it for me?

I'm a big fan of BT too - luscious depth to the sounds and
production, just like Yello. 'Divinity' is my favourite track of
'Ima' - the building piano roll is epic stuff! Also love 'Remember'
from the 'ESCM' LP. Check him out - he's a genius!

Hi everyone!!
What do all you Yello fans think of the idea of a Yello chat room? (sorry
if one already exists, I'm still fighting jet lag!!)
I dont know a lot about the techy stuff behind setting one up, I know the
majority of chat rooms are IRC style but there is a chat room for fans of
Ultravox that is only updated when the 'chat' button is pressed, which
makes it somewhat easier to keep up with (for us slower types or those of
us who insist on chatting with a hangover ;-))
For a look at the Ultravox chat room, just go to
http://www.ultravox.org.uk/cgi-bin/nph-client.pl#anchor1
It'd be a nice way to keep in touch in between digests...
Hope everyone is well!!

Subject: (yello) Yello book: the quotes dilemma
Date: 04 Oct 1998 22:55:04 +0100
I'd like to hear your opinions on using quotes in
my (fortcoming) book on Yello. I have collected
lots and lots of quotes from various sources
and I have them all stored chronologically in
my computer. Now, shall I use them or not?
On one hand they're subject to copyright etc etc,
and it may look "cheap" and "lazy" to use them
in a commercial book, but on the other hand they
often provide and interesting insight from that time
and what good do they do in my computer?
I have interviewed Boris about all the tracks etc,
but I have yet to meet Dieter, and with his busy
and unpredictable schedule I sincerely doubt that
I will ever have a chance of interviewing him in person
(no he doesn't have email) and the point is, Dieter
is usually the one who did all their interviews.
Right now I'm working on 1981, and I have to admit
that including a few well chosen quotes here and there
from 1981 looks much better that not including them.
If anyone out there has any knowledge of using quotes
from other people's interviews - the legal copyright stuff
let me know, OK? Note that I only intend to use direct
speech quotes from Dieter and Boris, never anything
that was written by the interviewer himself. The tricky
question is who owns the rights to what Dieter and Boris
said - themselves or the interviewer who cought their
words on tape? Someone in Zurich suggested that
Yello themselves own the rights to their own words
in interviews. Is it enough to mention [in brackets] after
the quote where it's from (magazine and date) or do I
have to get a personal approval from the person who
did the interview (not an easy task!) Best, JW

No, I'm sorry - 'infantile' just won't do! I don't think we're
comparing BT to Yello. Yello aren't in the same ball park as BT (and
many others) when it comes to writing for the dancefloor. It's simply
not where they're coming from. 'Pocket Universe' is OK but it's stuck
between what Yello is good at (their established stylistic approach)
and what Yello is maybe not so good at (out-and-out dance music).
I listen Yello for different reasons from those which make me listen
to BT - there aren't too many areas where they speak the same
language, but both do what they do extremely well.
Just my two groatsworth!

Subject: (yello) RE: Yello book: the quotes dilemma
Date: 05 Oct 1998 19:14:38 +0200
Hi Jonas !
I am working myself on a final exam (but not on Yello).
Therefore I have to use lot of quotes out from different sources
s.a. film dialogues, interviews from TV&radio and also from books and
magazines.
The copyright is always on the side of the person who has expressed a thought.
Even if the thought is written in a newspaper the right belongs to the
interviewed person.
An example: If you are are not willing to have your statement written in
the newspaper
you have the right to forbid that. Even if the reporter want to have this
statement in his article he has to ask for a permisson. All the other
things written in books, biblographies or reported on TV
have the copyright of the journalist or author.
In scientific works you are allowed to use quotes, but only in the correct
sense. So you have to use complete sentences and you have to watch that you
only use qoutes that do not missinterpretate the meaning of the original
text. But most important at all is to write downt the exact source to the
quote. The best thing would be to make a list at the end of the book with
all the sources you have used. If you do these things correctly, there
might be no problem in using quotes.
Yours,
G E O R G

Hi,
do you mean a "chat", or a WebPage with Comments ?
The first would mean a real-time chat - if anybody is in there you
can talk with him. If even not, you have to wait, perhaps for hours :-)
This is possible with IRC but also on a web-site.
The second would mean something like all this e-mail on one page.
Everybody can read alle the e-mails.
For me would be an IRC-Channel enough !-)

Best thing to do is to arrange a date & time for list members to go
on-line.
Perhaps do this well in advance so there's opportunity for lots of fans to
know
about it in time.
In terms of having a free web-page to post comments - I suppose the list
already accomodates for that, -
a chat-room however, would give more immeadiate answers to urgent
questions.

Yes It is a great idea to talk to other Yello fans...
I think the best way is to use IRC Chat , its a simple but effective
way to talk. Use something like #yello , channel .. Or try Internet
Phone5 from vocal tec , we could to other in real time then using

I'm not too excited about this new ICQ-phenomena. It seems to me that the
program performs a lot of 'hidden' things on my connection.
A friend of mine talked me into trying it. But I quickly talked myself out
of it. The security seems a bit... ehm low. Quite a few hackerpages
describes how easy ICQ is to break in on.
Anyway, besides the paranoia, I just like to keep my Internet apps as
simple as possible.
So why not take advantage of one of the many web-based solutions?
Cheers,

I'm on a quest of sorts - once upon a time about 10 years ago, I was
standing in the local music store with $20 ni my pocket - Should I buy
Yello's Flag CD or The Race? I bought Flag. Later on, I came back with
more cash, but the Cd was gone. I had to put up with a cassette copy of
The Race.
Now, ten years later, I'm trying to track down a CD copy of The Race
(U.S. import). It had 3 mixes of The Race, and I think a few variations
of Oh Yeah... The fabled "After The Race" is on here as well.
Anyone who has seen it/would sell their CD/knows a good online import
store/any other valuable info/ would be most appreciated.
-Trav!
Oh, the cassette? Snapped after playing it over and over a few hundred
times.
On the fast lane of the street I'm driving
Sometimes, somewhere, I'm arriving
Every day and every night
-Yello, The Race

Subject: (yello) Yello Interview
Date: 11 Oct 1998 11:51:46 +0100
Hi all,
Jonas suggested to me that I share this submitted interview with Yello
with
the list. It's from NME (a UK music newspaper) March 1995 at the launch
night of Hands On Yello. The text's below, but if it has not wrapped
properly in your E-Mail I've included the same text as a file attachment.
Regards,
James
NME March 1995
THIS YEAR'S YODEL
"I was raving before the word was invented," boasts Yello's 50-year-old and
ridiculously rich figurehead Dieter Meier, brimming with amiable
eccentricity.
"I've always been a slave to the rhythm," our immaculately dressed host
continues, "and tonight is our way of thanking these young producers for
the wonderful things they've done to our music."
It's one of those shindigs where if the roof caved in, half of dance
music's most happening figures would go down with it. A night in Zurich's
Kaufleuten club, where a quirky twist of fate in club culture's past,
present and future is being spectacularly and vociferously celebrated.
Despite concerned efforts from DJ Westbam's neogabba patterns and Isla
Gold's nutcore live noise, the ceiling stands its ground while the likes of
Carl Craig, Carl Cox, Oliver Lieb and The Orb's Alex Paterson and Thomas
Felhmann indulge in a raucous bid to drink the town dry of champers. The
launch bash for 'Hands of Yello' - the pioneering Swiss duo's remix LP - is
in full throttle.
The sound of Dieter Meier and Boris Blank's prodigious 18-year output lent
to the best of the current club/chill-out generation, ' Hands on Yello'
bears qualities extending well beyond the usual nature of this kind of
project - compared to the mixes they've been subjected to in the past (by
Andrew Weatherall, for instance) this is far superior stuff, Dieter
enthuses.
"It felt strange messing about with something that's already perfect,"
admits Carl Cox, before delivering the evenings mightiest DJ set to a volley
of well-earned applause. "But it's great to work with
music that's got substance, feeling and emotion. Charismatic, interesting
and mad that's Yello! We're paying tribute to them. Even my mum likes them.
They've worked with Shirley Bassey, what else can you say?"
"I blame it on the elephants," adds Alex Paterson, somewhat cryptically.
Later he mixes up reggae, electro and abstract beats, confusing the
house-hungry crowd while glaring peevishly at the club's red boiler-suited
pseudo-erotic dance troupe.
"If this was a Mike Oldfield project," the Orbmeister continues, "we'd have
stripped away everything and just left one of his annoying little loops. But
this was different. Anyone who's ever dropped an LSD tab will understand me
when I say the Orb's ambience and humour is in equilibrium with Yello's - it
only ever goes up its own bottom, never anyone else's."
"There's a sexual feel to their music," Carl Craig decides. "There's
nothing mechanical about it - it's got the funk and the flavour. Derrick
May, Kevin Saunderson, Juan Watkins and myself, we're all die-hard fans of
their weird sense of comedy."
After the backslapping and adulation, there's much frenzied partying to be
done. Oliver Lieb plays live, kicking off seductively in rampant tribal
zones before descending into a dingy pit of ruthless stomping and savage
riffing. Blimey, aren't Dieter and Boris a bit old for all this?
"At least in their heads they're still party animals," reckons Craig.
"Maybe if they have a nap half way through they'll last to when I'm on."
"You're only old when you can no longer make a fool of yourself and act
like a little idiot," laughs wild-eyed Dieter in retort, "I'm proud to say
I'm still a very childish man."
Carl Craig comes on very late, a little anxious that his subtle funk sounds
will go over the audience's collective head after so much turbo charged Euro
vinyl. He needn't have worried - he spins
'French Kiss' and 'I feel Love' alongside deep disco-ish Detroit techno to a
suitably enthralled audience showing.
Poor old Dieter on the other hand is looking well weary. It's past his
bedtime and he's off. Not, however, before dishing out some advice to the
techno whippersnappers he's befriended today.
"We're bombastic sound jugglers who emerged from the splendid isolation of
Switzerland. If we can do it, anyone can" he proclaims. "Like us, these
guys have to bang against the door and gain entry to the cave of holy
creation. My advice is never stop: just keep on banging."

Hey James, you missed a 'Blah'.
A Stina fan contacted me when To The Sea came out and we tried to
transcribe it together.
She was a great help since she was used to Stina way of singing. So I guess
the transcription are as close as it can get. Feel free to check it out @

Greetings fellow yellow fans,
I've already posted to Daniell the following lyrics.
I don't know if he received them.
So I thought as a number of people are asking ......
To The Sea
Away...
Away...
You may have many problems
But I was never one
All I ask is take me to the sea
You had to take me somewhere
I realize it now
Listen now just take me to the sea
Away from flickering nights and crowded streets
Away from blinding lights and shining needs
Away from person hiding, breathing hard
Away from always paying on your card
This will be my way out
And you will be my guide
The more you take me to the sea
I'm only asking this once
Please take me for a ride
All I ask is take me to the sea
To the sea
To the sea
To the sea
To the sea
Then leave me with the seagulls
Smile your sweetest smile
'Cause you [?]
Drop silver on your forehead
And wave my last goodbye
All you do is take me to the sea
To the sea
To the sea
To the sea
To the sea
(I'm wondering if James and David are actually fans of Yello looking at their
recent postings? Or am I missing an in joke somewhere?)
Move..........Dance............Be born

To me that last line sounds something like
'Cause your laugh is salt and earth and breeze
(or 'salten earthen praise')
(other possibilities include 'love' instead of 'laugh'.)

I think you were missing the joke. I thought James' and David's posts were

I had a good laugh, which was no doubt their intention. Thanks guys.

Earlier there was a TV ad for a Norwegian light beer (Lysholmer Light)
that used 'Rubberbandman' for it's music.
There's also a weekly satire program on Norwegian radio NRK P2, "Hallo i
uken", which has been using 'La Habanera' for it's title theme for years.

There are a lot of Russia TV and radio programmes using Yello music (pieces
from Sometimes, Goldrush, How How etc etc etc). This music is used in
advertisement clips too. For example, a piece from Celsius we can hear in
the clip which is against illegal video and audio products ( this is a very
good example y'know :))

And for some years ago the sportsection on the same station used The Race

Greetings Yello fans at home and abroad!
It seems the debate about the lyrics of 'To The Sea' still rages.
Eric Schader's version differs slightly from mine and a few of you have
also made suggestions (mainly about the line highlighted below).
I'm almost sure I found the lyrics at David John's excellent
'Suite 909' site, but on visiting tonight I see that the line in question
now reads "Kiss you like the salt and earth and breeze".
David - did you update your lyric site? Or did I get the 'Cause you [?]'
line from elsewhere?
>>>"Then leave me with the seagulls
>>>Smile your sweetest smile
>>>'Cause you [?]
>>>Drop silver on your forehead
>>>And wave my last goodbye
>>>All you do is take me to the sea
>>>To the sea
>>>To the sea
>>>To the sea
>>>To the sea"
(End)
And while we're on the subject of Pocket Universe lyrics -
What are the extremely quick words in "On Track".
It's driving me mad!!! David - can you help? After all,
if you've got 'Magnetic, energetic and beautiful' on the
list you really should have "On Track"!!!!!
Byyyyyyeeeeeee!
Mike

I always thought Dieter spoke English with an unusual accent; quite
stereotipically 'un-german' for being a native German speaker. But we
recently had a Swiss designer from Zurich named Fritz Gottschalk come to
speak at my university, and he had the same unique (!) pronunciation.

Here's something everyone should know about
Yello's lyrics that are published on fan sites.
I'm quoting my own Yello FAQ here:
* Where can I find the song lyrics of Yello?
They are published on various Yello fan sites (see links on my main Yello
page), but they are not checked or verified by Yello and you can not trust
that they are correct.
(end of quote)
The line I sent out from To the Sea a copuple of days ago
is, however, correct and verified.
I hope this clears some things up. JW

OK. Now on to my subject line.
I remember quite vividly an ad for a bank in the UK (I think it was Lloyds)
and they used "Sweet Thunder" from 'Baby'.
It showed a river bank somewhere in the Sudan or similar. The amazing
image that I can't forget is that the camera panned down the river bank
showing cattle drinking and local people washing and swimming in the
river. But without the picture cutting, the same cattle and people appeared
again..... and again.... it was stunning, especially with the haunting
music of Sweet Thunder. Any other UK fans remember it!

It is "Sweet Thunder" from the album Baby.
Your wav. file is taken from the middle of the track.

This is a tricky situation for me because I was entrusted
info which was supposed to be confidential and now
someone else kind of "spilled the beans". I will inform you all
when everything has been confirmed. And generally, never
trust release dates - or even releases for that matter - until
they are officially confirmed. Records get pushed back and
cancelled more often than you think and that's the reason
why record companies usually keep details confidential
until everything's settled. JW

The closest thing I can think of is the Tokapis On Track Mix... but that
wasn't by Boris. Maybe it's a new track... or it could be a herring.

If other artists are involved, I hope they use good remixes and not some

I bought today Carl Cox "At The End Of The Clinche" there is track
"Musky" actually it is instrumental version of Yello's "Magnetic".
If we are straigt "Magnetic" is Carl Cox "Musky" with words!
In sleeve reads... all tracks _written_, produced, arranged and recorded
by Carl Cox except "Musky" written by Carl Cox, mixed and produced by
Boris Blank and Carl Cox
Next we look at Yello's "PU"
Music composed, arranged and engineered by Boris Blank, produced by
Yello except "Magnetic" produced by Boris Blank and Carl Cox
What this all means? Is it so that "PU" tracks don't are all Yello's
(written by Boris), because there no mention who is written those
tracks.
Why there no any mention that "Magnetic" ia actually "Musky" and it's
not written by Boris?
How about else 10 tracks who are written them? Just wondering why Boris
own Carl's track?

Hi there,
Yesterday a friend - also an musican like me - told me, that he could
buy an Fairlight (i think an) V2 for about 18 000 DM.
He ever dreamed of an Fairlight in his life and this is a good price...
This Fairlight was in America, with the complete original library and
some sounds from "Art of Noise"...
But someone else wants to have this one too !
Only as an sparks park depot !!!
Funny this guy and what do you believe where it is, when i am
posting this into a yello mailing list ?
Yes, it is Boris...
8-)
Now the philosopher of us can think about the contrary of
one man who ever dreamed of one thing and
another only wants to have the same as an sparks park depot.... :-\
have a nice weekend !

Magnetic/Musky was produced by Boris and Carl Cox.
Carl med Boris , when he was making the L'hotel remix for the "Hans On
Yello" CD
There they decided to produce a song together.
Boris added Dieters voice later and released the track on PU called "Magnetic".
But also Carl had the copyright on that track. He released the track in the
original instrumental version , and called it "Musky".
So both Carl and Boris own the copyright for the song...
COMPRENDE ????

Re: Musky/Magnetic
Carl created the bass line, Boris added his
ususal Yello sounds, and then they both
continued on their own, maiking two slightly
different versions in the process. To avoid
the hassles of copyright they did not write
"written by Blank/Cox".
