Does anyone know what the "musky" MP3 song in the Rare Yello Uploads folder
from the FTP site is? I can't seem to find it mentioned in the Yello
disographies I've looked through. Please e-mail me directly as I only get
the digest version of the list. Thanks

Question 5: In the sleeve you find DM and BB in front of a car. Which?
Answer 5: 80-85 The new mix in 1 go.

Question 7: Not so catholic lyrics?
Answer 7: Domingo
Question 8: Tape PU and die?
Answer 8: Haven't done it yet. Will do this evening.

So, after the contest I can look back and say that not many people have
joined the contest but those who did, were enthousiastic about it. Next
time I will tell you who was the winner and so on.This way some mail is
still sent to the group because I feel a dead smell on the list. I put PU
on a tape yesterday and based on the Maxell XLII tape, I can tell you that
the last thing that was recorded on side 1 was the first 10 seconds of
resistor. Still, those who ansered Pan Blue or who said that real yello
lovers wouldn't put half a song on 1 side are also partially right. IS
THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE? or is my mail being reduced to dust somewhere?
Anyway, I haven't had any April fools jokes so that was an improvement.
Last year they made me call up a certain phone number and ask for John
Bear. The answer was that they only had a Yogi Bear and he was behind bars.
Real fun when they make you call the Antwerp zoo.

Subject: (yello) About Random Tox(y) and recording PU
Date: 02 Apr 1998 16:04:38 CEST
Good day y'all!
Yes, I'm the one who used to call myself Random Toxy, when I had a
special email address for the mailinglists I'm on. Speaking about that,
I guess we all know of mister Random Tox and his Turnex, but have you
guys missed the Random Toxy who is mentioned in one of the songs on "You
gotta say yes..."? I don't remember the name of the song, probably
"Heavy whispers" or "Smile on you", but I think you know wich one I mean
if I tell you that it's the one where Dieter sings about quite a lot of
persons, all of them with peculiar names, like Random Toxy, Sloopy
Slunder, Sandy Hooker, Rosita Delicious, etc. Now you know why I called
myself Random Toxy and not Random Tox...
When it comes to recording PU on a C90 tape, won't there be a difference
between theory and practical recording. I mean, most C90 tapes are
between 46-48 minutes long on one side, so I guess it comes down to
which cassette type you use...
Btw, this contest was a worst case scenario to me: I can only use my
email account at work and the day before the contest began they had to
shut down the server and I haven't been able to see the questions until
today - AAAARGH!
Best wishes to you all - 'cause we are more than two, aren't we?!?
- Hank B (a.k.a. Random Toxy...)

Musky is the name of a track from Carl Cox's album, released 1996 called
"At the end of the cliche". It does not have Dieter's vocals on it, which
is the only difference from "Magnetic" on Pocket Universe.

Hi,
I've been dormant here most of the winter. Reading but replying to
individiauals rather than the entire group.
I noticed I wound up with 2 copies of the full length CD Zebra. Both say "for
promotional use only" on the back insert, the track times vary the regular
release
on paper only. To clarify-a track listed on the promo is 3:43 while on the
commercial release it is 3:41 but it is essentially the same.
I'd like to offer this for trade of whatever some of you may have doubles of.
Send offer to me (not the list)
Thanks,

I am just listening to the "electric glide in blue" album by apollo 440.
And there is this voice again...yes that is Billy MacKenzie.
Apollo 440 features Billy in the song "Pain In Any Language".
This song is in the typical mackenzie-style like Yello's "Moon On Ice" or
"The Rhythm Divine"
It might be one of the last songs before he died.
This album made me think about the roots Boris Blank lost with his last two
albums - it shows the way Boris did not go. And I hope that the new album
will contain less "techno-beats" but more "grooves"...

Try ESPRIT (http://eil.com/)
As far as I know they have about three different european
"To The Sea" versions in stock. Take the german maxi-CD.
They also have an office in the States:

Subject: (yello) It's a draw
Date: 07 Apr 1998 16:23:00 +0100
I had 6 people who really entered the contest and 6 who apologised
afterwords.
This should have been a warning because:
IT'S A DRAW.
Yes, 2 people actually got 6 of them right.
It doesn't really need mentioning that nobody even got close to answer No.
2.
On first place are: GEORG being: a9103394@unet.univie.ac.at from
AUSTRIA (I hope)
and : Contrix being: contrix@club-internet.fr from FRANCE
(again I presume)
I hope they enjoy sharing the first place as they both had 6 correct
answers. However, GEORG had Q4 right, Contrix was better on Q3.
On second place is Jeroen Broekhuizen who had to let them pass because he
only knew half of the movie question. Still, this gives him a score of 5+.
The strange thing is, he would have won if he didn't answer "Monolith" on
Q8. After "Monolith", only 26 min and 23 sec have passed. Maybe I should
have made clear that in most countries (except for Holland) a 90min tape
contains at least 90min :-)
Third but most responsive on the list was Chris Norton with 5. Thanks for
all replies.
The fastest starter of them all only gave me 1 answer, and it was right. 1
point for Q1 to Victor@soros. Cheers and beers.
Last but not least is Jakob88 who didn't really answer any questions but
who did reply, so I'll count him anyway just to even up the score.
Setteling back to my usual speed I am still thinking if I should continue
the contest. I have some ideas about this with WAV files and so on but this
is a future dream. At this time, it's been fun.

Hi, Bonzo here,
I have not posted anything for a while so I thought I`d have a chat. 3
things:-
Billy Mackenzie is a man?? I would have never believed it after listening to
his excellent voice on `Moon On Ice`. And he`s dead?? Sad news indeed.
Musky is the same as Magnetic?? F**king hell! I had both Carl Cox`s and
Yello`s CD`s sitting on my shelf for ages and I never realised. Just played
them both. Guess which one I like best (I am loyal)!
Does anyone know where I can get some really rhythmic percussion-based music
from, like the stuff out of `On The Run` and numerous other Yello classics?
I`m talking about all those conga`s, slaps and bongo`s bouncing off each
other in a latino frenzy. I think that style of music may originally have
come from Brazil but I`m not sure.
Bye now, Bonzo@wbvm.demon.co.uk

Sorry for getting off-topic, but I thought since the activity on the list was so low

Does anyone know about any recordings of 'Scenes de Ballet' by 'Berioz' (note,
not Berlioz!!!). It's a classical piece of which I'm told it's never been released on
any sound medium.
Catalog numbers or just the mere mentioning of it's existence would be a great

Yo!
A few weeks ago I saw a brilliant movie called "Underground". A funny
and dramatic Slovenian film. So what's that got to do with Yello?
Well, one of the two friends who the film's about (Unfortunately I don't
remeber his name, but you will know who I mean) looks quite a lot like
Dieter Meier, if you don't take is hair into account! Take a look for
yourself and see if you agree with me. It is most easy to see the
similarities in the latter part of the film.

Hi Tomote !
This is not completly true.
Dieter Meier (the songwriter) used to play profeesional
poker a few years ago.
But he does not need to make money with the music, because he
comes from a rich family (swiss banker).
All the things he does, he is doing as an artist.
Perhaps gambling is not an art, but Dieter liked to play.
Boris Blank (the musician) has nothing to do with gambling.
He lives in a world of sounds and mixes.
Boris is working everyday in his own studio creating new sounds
and arrangements. And there is nobody allowed to disturb him.

Hello!! Yello!!
My name's Mike and I live in Harrow, London, UK.
I'm a Graphic Designer / Typesetter in my late forties (an oldie but
goodie!!)
I've been a Yello fan ever since being knocked out by 'The Race' many years
ago.
They definitely produce the best driving music in the universe (pocket or
otherwise!)
Even my 20 year old daughter thinks I'm a "cool dude" when I yank the volume
up.
I logged onto the net last month and its great finding all this info about
Yello.
But there are two questions I need answers to.
Will they ever tour the UK? And is there a video available somewhere?
Move...... Dance......... Be Born!!!!!!
Best Wishes

I was watching the very first episode of Lost In Space yesterday (don't
laugh) when I heard the announcer in the control tower say "Zero minus
one hour and fifteen minutes and holding". Sound familiar, anyone? I
thought so, so I got out Night Train and Suite 904, and I'm sure it's
the same sample (the sampled version is slightly slower and lower in
pitch, but I'm sure it's the same). Anyone agree?

If somebody could sample the voice in the series, we could compare.
But hey, we should also stare at sample CD and sound effects CD collections
having Lost In Space material.
Jonas, have you already asked Boris what CD collections he has used?
What other samples are used in Yello songs? There is an arabic female
vocal in Santiago. What else? Suite 904 has some female voice too
used as rhythm instrument.

Dear Mike,
as far as I am aware, Yello have only done one concert, and that was at the
Roxy in New York over ten years ago, so no chance of seeing them here. If they
ever do turn up you'll have ot be second in the queue for tickets behind me!
As for videos, there are a couple of videos of the singles. Your best bet
would be to try your local HMV or whatever, and if they are deleted there are
a series of second hand record shops in Notting Hill Gate near the tube
station that may well have them. Well worth a visit if you have nothing better
to do.
Seeing as we aren't a million miles apart, it might be interesting to get
together some time.

Subject: (yello) Propellerheads + Coldcut + Madonna
Date: 25 Apr 1998 13:50:09 +0100
Some time ago I invested in three CDs - "Decksdrumsandrockandroll" by =
Propellerheads, "Let us play!" by Coldcut and the "Ray of light" by =
Madonna. I was going to buy Propellerheads and Madonna, and stumbled =
across the Coldcut one really cheap, so I got that one too.
"Decksdrums..." by Propellerheads is really an excellent record, and I =
can understand why lots of people compare them to Yello - they make =
really good electronic music, a bit out of the ordinary. However, one of =
Yello's trademarks are the sounds and samples of Boris, while =
Propellerheads' sounds are a bit more of the ordinary kind (but when =
they make this good music, who cares?) :) Recommend tracks 1, 7, 10 and =
12... =20
On the other hand, Coldcut, which I haven't really been that familiar =
with, use (if possible) even more strange noises and samples for their =
music than Yello. Listen to e.g. "More Beats + Pieces" or "Timber" - the =
last one actually uses sounds from a mill (ehm, not sure about that =
word, but anyways, somewhere they cut wood...) I really recommend this =
record for all Yello fans on this list. Yeah, and it comes with a "free" =
CDROM full of "coldcut games, toys & videos for mac & pc", which =
actually includes QuickTime versions of 5-6 of their music videos.=20
Just have to mention the track that's playing in the background now, too =
- "Every home a prison"... interesting lyrics (about the only one with, =
I think) and original sounding beats.
Well, now I forgot what I was going to say about the Madonna record, =
besides I like most of it a lot - mostly because of this William Orbit's =
sound, but, well, this is something new from a person like Madonna. I =
could never imagine that I was going to buy a Madonna record after =
"Erotica" or "Sex" or what the heck she called it.
Propellerheads you just _have_ to get as a devoted Yello fan, and I =
strongly recommend the Coldcut record too - for some really good =
original electronic music. The Madonna one is a safe one, but I guess =
not everybody's that keen on this artist.

Per-Stian

We will go through all tracks one by one, and I'm sure he will
reveal a few "secrets" here and there. Having said all this,
the fact remains that he creates (all but) 100% of his sounds
himself. *Very* few sounds are taken from other sources than
those he tapes himself indoors or ourdoors. For one song
(I won't reveal what song yet) he used a lion's roaring from
a "nature's sounds" record, but he of course changed it
around in his Fairlight quite a bit.
Btw, I got a hefty 6 greetings to forward. Come on!
And two of them asked for myself from persons outside
of this list! (One of them is actually from Warren Cann
from Ultravox) (no, he's not on this list) JW

Given you rule out Hector Berlioz, the only composer of note with a name
similar to the one you give is the Italian - Luciano Berio, however he has not
to my knowledge ever written a piece with a French title let alone any ballet
music as such. Knowing what century your "Berioz" lived in might help matters,
but to be frank you might be onto a bit of a wild goose chase.
Hector Berlioz did however write a "symphony" called "Romeo et Juliette", it's
a spectacular piece of music that breaks with every formal convention of the
time and no subsequent composer has stretched the concept of the symphony
quite to the same extent. The movement called "Scene d'amour" in particular,
is quite wonderful and a pretty definitive recording of the piece has recently
come out on Philips by the Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique conducted
by John Eliot Gardiner. I'm quite sure this would meet with your girlfriend's
approval just as well.

Sorry, This is my last contribution - as obviously this subject has nothing to
do with Yello and I don't want to come across as some kind of classical music
trainspotter.
Shortly after I made my last posting I remember that there is a dance piece by
Stravinsky with the exact same name as your "Berioz" piece. There is I suppose
a distant possibility that by whatever means you heard of this music you were
given the name of the conductor and not the composer. Pierre Boulez (the "z"
is pronounced) has often conducted Stravinsky's music, however no recording of
him exists to my knowledge of him conducting this particular piece. There are
however many other fine recordings including one conducted by the composer
himself. The one to go for however goes under the title of "Stravinsky in
America" and is on RCA and the artistes concerned are the London Symphony
Orchestra under Michael Tilson Thomas. This CD also includes the full score of
the ballet "Agon", one of Stravinsky's finest and rarely recorded.
Hope this is of help and sorry if I've bored everyone else senseless, but in
someways the Berlioz piece I mentioned in my earlier note is not unlike some
twice-removed version of what Yello are trying occasionally to achieve some
150 years later.

My friend constantly points out how this and that sound is a preset
sound of some synth. Perhaps those sounds just pops up. The weird vocal
sounds in S.A.X. and start of the Suite 909 are from Kurzweil 2000, for
example.

I have not yet listen to the songs but one sound which popped up

I'm interested in cataloging sounds from Yello albums. The sounds need not
be alone in the audiofiles but there could be (certainly will be)
background too. However, the length of the audiofile would be exactly the
length of the sound.
Maybe melodies and rhythm patterns could be cataloged similarly.

This is madness! How can you *catalogue* Yello (or any music, for
that matter) except by when it was written and who by? I'm a
Librarian by profession but I wouldn't dream of trying to 'catalogue'
an artist!
Let's not get too anal retentive about cataloguing creativity - music
is to enjoy as a whole, not to disassemble into its constituent
parts, surely?
