  6. 'Stella' is the name of a charachter from the
  7. (still unreleased) 'Snowball' movie (the poor guy
  8. who was a prisoner in the stalactite cave).
  9. The scream you can hear in Stalakdrama is his.
  10.  
  11. 'One Second' is after the one second samples
  12. fatured *within* the songs (not between). This
  13. album was their first to be recorded with the
  14. legendary Fairlight CMS Series III (50,000 ú)
  15. sampler.

  17. 'Flag' is a bit more complicated than "because
  18. of the song 'The Race' ". It's actually so complicated
  19. that I can't remember it now, but it had something to
  20. do with an achievement.

  22. 'Baby' is simply because the finished album was sort
  23. of their 'baby' - something they'd created.
  24.  
  25. The glassharp on Stella is heard on Vicious Games
  26. (if you listen carefully).

  28. There is no piano on Stella, only on Blue Nabou,
  29. first featured in a commercial in 1984, then as
  30. the B-side of Vicious Games. Blue Nabou was
  31. probably intended to be included on the album.

  115. So that's what that sound was! I assumed that it wasn't as it isn't
  116. credited on the single or the album "Essential" - which reminds me, I
  117. forgot about Essential before. It's presumably called Essential not because
  118. it's essential that you buy it (though the new mix of The Rhythm Divine is
  119. definitely essential), but because it contains the 'essence' of Yello -
  120. 'this is what Yello is all about' (or something like that). Does this sound
  121. right?

  126. Talking about pianos, on One Second a "piano and accordian" is credited. Is
  127. this supposed to be "piano-accordian" or do both instruments appear on the
  128. album? (Accordian appears in Le Secret Farida.)

  161. But in LP version plenty of people are credited.

  182. The emphasis here is on the word *samples*, not *one second*.
  183. The Fairlight CMS Series III was a novelty in 1986 and Boris
  184. created Goldrush and One Second in a way that was totally
  185. different from all his earlier albums: by using samples to build
  186. up a song. If the samples are exactly one second or not is
  187. of less importance - I mean what should he call the album?
  188. "0.34 Second"? :-)

  231. Yesterday while I was walking downtown, I passed a guy who was wearing
  232. what appeared to be a Yello t-shirt.  It was a black shirt, with dull grey 
  233. text, in no recognizable "Yello" font.

  235. The front had the words:

  240. There was a symbol underneath, which I recall looked like a "mitten", or a
  241. paw-print, in a circle, perhaps something like a "y": Oo

  243. The back had a few lines of lyrics:

  249. I'm not sure if those were the exact lines, but they were definately from 
  250. the song.

  252. I wish I had asked the guy about the shirt, as I doubt I will ever see it 
  253. again!  Has anyone else ever seen/heard of this?

  255. Coincidentally, later that night, "Sweet Thunder" was used as
  256. accompanying music for a fireworks competition (Spain's finale), which I
  257. remember was used exactly 2 years ago in the same fireworks show.  :)

  298. Yesterday was supposed to be one of the happiest days of my life.
  299. Instead, it turned into a complete embarrasment.

  301. Yesterday was the day when I finally bought the long-expected LP - POCKET
  302. UNIVERSE.
  303. The first impression was: TERRIBLE! (It remained the same after I listened
  304. to it 3 more times).
  305. It seems, that YELLO have completely changed direction into techno music.
  306. There are so few songs that remind us of the old YELLO that we love so much -
  307. (On track, To the sea, and Beyond mirrors) although Beyond mirrors feels
  308. like more of a lecture than
  309. a song (There's some nice background music in it but it's still not the same).
  310.  
  311. On track reminds me of ZEBRA's Night train with it's nice "rail&road" samples.
  312. And To the sea reminds of course of Rhythm divine (But no-one can really
  313. compare Shirley bassey's
  314. voice to the voice of Stina Nordestam).
  315.  
  316. But what about songs like Magnetic, Monolith, Celsius, Resistor?
  317. What happened?
  318. It's just painful to hear those songs, much too painful.
  319. They sound just like a random collection of sounds instead of a song with a
  320. meaning.
  321. Where are the emotions?
  322.  
  323. I'm beginning to think that if this was the first YELLO album I ever heard,
  324. I would have never
  325. become the group's fan, and the thought scares the hell out of me.

  368. Magnetic is quite the same than Musky in Carl Cox's own album. It is
  369. not pure Yello.

  371. Monolith is actually quite good. Celsius is a dark tuned song and
  372. sounds okay. Resistor is good but somehow it disturbs me a bit; is it
  373. lacking of the softness?

  413. artists all mention what an influence Yello has had on their work.

  455.  I agree with you about Zebra, i think it my least favorite yello album. i
  456. hardly ever play it. 
  457.  Unfortunately my local record stores still don't have a copy of the new cd
  458. yet, i can't wait to pick it up.
  459.  I really love the 'Hands On Yello' cd, it is really interesting to hear
  460. their songs done by other artists. It was great to see how many really good
  461. artists had been influenced by yello.

  482. Don't know about the Excess shirt but I can vouch for the existence of a Solid
  483.  Pleasure shirt. I have one that is that yellow/orange color used on (some)
  484. of the LP art with the being centered. Odd thing about it is it is a child's
  485. size-maybe one that a 10 year old would fit into.

  502. Usually I have to listen to Yello tracks a few times before I start 
  503. to fully appreciate them. Maybe it's because I have certain 
  504. expectations (based on the previous albums) wich are mostly quite 
  505. different from the new release, so I have to 'adjust'.
  506. That was not the case with 'Pocket Universe' though (except for 
  507. 'Resistor'). I thought it was pretty good from the start. Maybe also 
  508. my techno history has something to do with it.
  509. They chose a new path, they evolved together with the evolution of 
  510. music in general, without losing their own particular Yello-sound.
  511. The samples and the way the samples are used are very much Yello as I 
  512. experience it. Same goes for the way the songs are build up. 
  513. Some great new sounds and good pieces of ambient a.o.
  514. Another masterpiece I would say.

  521. Especially 'Dr. Van Steiner' (Cosmic Baby), 'Ciel Ouvert' (Jens) and 
  522. 'L'Hotel' (Carl Cox).
  523. I'm not so fond of the way Plutone did 'Oh Yeah' (too little 
  524. connections with the original) and Ilsa Gold's version of 'Live at 
  525. the Roxy'. But the rest's great.

  619. I agree with Andre - it depends on which direction you come to 
  620. Yello  from, I think. If you have a background of Electropop, PU will 
  621. sound  pretty hard and techno-oriented. If you are more of a 
  622. 'hard-faced techno spook', as John Peel puts it, you won't find 
  623. anything out of the ordinary in the newer style.
  624.  
  625. If, like me, you come from both directions you'll probably regard  
  626. this as Yello claiming the Intelligent, Artistic Techno crown which  
  627. is rightfully theirs. PU is a landmark and a turning point. It's  
  628. better than Baby, and different to anything that's gone before. It's 
  629. a different kind of Yello, but between the rhythms you can hear the 
  630. beauty and quirkiness of Boris's older style in equal measure. I 
  631. love it both on its own and as part of the Yello canon of work.

  633. They couldn't just keep remaking Stella ad infinitum. Well done 
  634. for keeping an open ear to what's around now, lads. Vive la  
  635. difference!

  811.      All I know is that in '93 "The Art Of Noise" stopped breathing

  813.      went writing software. As if he wasn't doing something a lot better.

  821.      YELLO came and they are still ahead. They use the synth in a different
  822.      way entirely. I can defenately hear an Art of Noise influence in some
  823.      songs and even some Tomita (but they won't know that). But what is
  824.      very weird: At the end, they suddenly go "once upon a time in the
  825.      west" on us. Boris has an Enio Moricone in the shelf and that
  826.      man never did techno, believe me.

  1007. I just played thru the One Second cd and noticed how familiar the song 
  1008. "L'Hotel" sounds to an instrumental track on a live David Bowie
  1009. record-"Stage."

  1012. The track is titled "Warzania" and is co-written by Bowie and Brian Eno. The 
  1013. droning march tempo is what I believe ties them together. Both being
  1014. instrumentals,
  1015. I've found you can basically mix one atop the other to get a compoiste song.
  1016. I don't have a mixer but i played one in the cd drive & the other on the
  1017. turntable in the other room.

  1165. Pocket Universe. In a word: Wow!

  1167. SOLAR DRIFTWOOD
  1168. What a wonderful start to the album! The music was anticipatory, expectant,
  1169. and some other words which mean the same thing...
  1170.  
  1171. CELSIUS
  1172. Highlights: the vocal "Ah"s which are a semitone above the bass, the
  1173. 'African' lyrics, spooky motif at c.3:00.
  1174. And now for the big question: are the words real words or are they nonsense
  1175. words? (I suspect it's the latter.)
  1176.  
  1177. MORE
  1178. Now where have I heard this before - oh, I know - it was on Jam & Spoon's
  1179. Great Mission (Haus Mix). Did J&S get the music from Boris, or the other
  1180. way around? On first listening, this song seemed to be a bit long, not
  1181. going anywhere, but I'm getting used to it.

  1184. Highlight: the 'train rattling' samples. Oh I liked the rest of the piece too.

  1202. Liquid Mountain makes good film music. These are growing on me...

  1205. In a word "relentless" - relentlessly heading towards the end of the - um -
  1206. album. It could have been faster, though... :)
  1207. Highlights: "Aaaaaaaaah" (that's a scream), "go!" (especially following the
  1208. "We're all here on this planet" section), "faster, faster, faster, faster"
  1209. Cringe: Why were those arpeggio 'blips' so badly out of tune?
  1210. For a minute I thought that the "African" singing in this song was taken
  1211. from Celsius, but it wasn't. Oh well...
  1212. One song which didn't appear in Resistor was "Magneto", but that's okay,
  1213. because that song did appear on...:

  1215. BEYOND MIRRORS
  1216. Nice music, but shame about the words...
  1217. Maybe it's just me, but I find it strange to be told that "there is no such
  1218. thing as a definite fact in science", then to be told that "mass is a
  1219. physical interpretation of energy" (definite fact), and "Galileo Galilei
  1220. was in fact correct".
  1221. If "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic",
  1222. it doesn't follow that the technology is magic, or that magic exists at all.
  1223. But maybe I just live in the universe next door...

  1226. Overall I enjoyed PU. Now I'll have to decide which song I like the most,

  1258. understand what is meant by the word "fact". A fact is defined as a "thing
  1259. certainly known to have occurred or be true". The statement "mass is a
  1260. physical interpretation of energy" is just that, a statement about the nature
  1261. of energy and is no more a fact than stating that it is impossible to be
  1262. absolutely certain of anything. Which is in effect what Dieter Meier is
  1263. saying. "Beyond Mirrors" is about the idea that the universe is infinitely
  1264. complex and is therefore by definition incapable of being fully comprehended.
  1265. No matter how far we advance, there will always remain a part that will
  1266. remain unknowable. Magic is magic, precisely because we do not know how "A"
  1267. and "B" resulted in "C". To a "primitive" tribe, a shotgun will appear to be
  1268. magical since they have no understanding of how it functions.

  1270. To be confronted by magic is to look at things anew and realise that
  1271. everything is not what you thought it to be, it is to be filled with a sense
  1272. of wonder and awe. A child views the world in precisely this way: in
  1273. adulthood we can all to easily begin to stagnate because we start to take to
  1274. many things as given. Dieter Meier has stated that Yello treat the studio as
  1275. a child would and therefore view each new endeavour as a voyage of discovery.
  1276. This is why Yello have have always retained the ability to re-invent
  1277. themselves and stay fresh. Of course they have their influences - Dieter
  1278. listed Mahler's Ninth Symphony as a favourite piece in an article in "The
  1279. Face" some years ago, so merely looking for clues in the world of Techno is
  1280. more than a little limiting. Yello can sound like everything and everybody
  1281. while still remaining Yello, its why they're so unique. So when back in
  1282. April, on a trip to Budapest, I spied a copy of "Pocket Universe" in a record
  1283. store window the feelings of anticipation and excitment that filled me had
  1284. that same magical quality that I felt when my mother and I went to buy my
  1285. first racing bicycle all those years ago. Yello are fun, yet most of the
  1286. postings I've read since I've been on this list seem to be oblivious to this
  1287. "fact".

  1669. direction (from 'Classical' music), and knew virtually nothing about the
  1670. top 10, much to the disappointment of my school friends at the time! I've
  1671. always liked how they don't write things to a formula - they're free to
  1672. experiment with sound and write REAL music, rather than ephemeral music for
  1673. the masses. And, I agree, Yello is also fun.

  1780.    auffallend zurueck. Er, der frueher mit dadaistischen Parolen die
  1781.    rhythmisch vertrackten Yello-Hits anpeitschte, ist auf der CD nur noch
  1782.    vereinzelt zu hoeren - mit philosophischen Kurzbetrachtungen ueber
  1783.    Rhythmus und Magie, Gott und die Welt.

  1785.    Verabschiedet sich Dieter Meier mit bald 52 Jahren aus dem
  1786.    Popbusiness?
  1787.    
  1788.    Der einstige Golf-Nationalspieler zieht die Brauen noch ein wenig
  1789.    hoeher und senkt den stechenden Blick zu Boden. "Rein quantitativ habe
  1790.    ich als Texter und Regisseur seit jeher weniger Zeit mit Yello
  1791.    verbracht, als es Boris tut", sagt er. "Aber ich stamme aus einer
  1792.    Familie von Geschaeftsleuten, und ich moechte mich meines klaren
  1793.    Beduerfnisses, mich geschaeftlich zu betaetigen, nicht mehr laenger
  1794.    enthalten. Ich will immer noch Neues
  1795.    lernen."
  1796.    
  1797.    Bereits hat der Bentleyfahrer schmerzhaft lernen muessen, dass es im
  1798.    Geschaeftsleben auch ein Profi-Pokerspieler, wie er einst einer war,
  1799.    nicht leicht hat. In einem ersten Versuch, sich als Industrieller zu
  1800.    beweisen, hatte Meier die Uhrenmarke Crash uebernommen, eine
  1801.    Recyclinguhr. Die Gehaeuse sind aus zusammengepresstem Aluminiumabfall
  1802.    gefertigt, Cola- und Bierdosen, die Lederarmbaender teils aus
  1803.    ausgedienten Mercedes-Ledersitzen. Die Uhr soll ausser der Zeit
  1804.    zeigen, sagt Meier, "dass wir in einer Wegwerfgesellschaft leben".
  1805.    
  1806.    Doch das Geschaeft mit der Uhr tickte von Anfang an nicht richtig.
  1807.    Gleich nachdem Meier die Crash-Aktienmehrheit uebernommen hatte,
  1808.    stellten sich die Probleme ein. Meier musste 100 000 Franken Kapital
  1809.    einschiessen und mit dem mondaenen Uhrenhersteller Cartier einen
  1810.    Rechtsstreit wegen Patentrechten ausfechten. Insgesamt duerfte er mit
  1811.    seinem Einstieg ins Uhrenbusiness eine Million Franken verloren haben;
  1812.    genaue Zahlen mag er nicht nennen, der juristische Kleinkrieg mit
  1813.    Cartier laeuft noch.
  1814.    
  1815.    "Mein groesster Fehler war", bekennt er, "dass ich statt einen klaren
  1816.    Schlussstrich zu ziehen die Firma viel zu lange weitergezogen habe.
  1817.    Ein schoener Teil der Investitionen ist in dieser Uebergangsphase
  1818.    verloren gegangen." Am Rechtshaendel aergert ihn weniger der Geldverlust
  1819.    als die Zeitverschwendung. "Als ich 50 wurde", sinniert er, "habe ich
  1820.    gelernt, dass man mit der Zeit, die man auf dieser Welt hat, sehr
  1821.    sorgfaeltig umgehen muss." Haette Meier nicht eine Uhr zu verkaufen, man
  1822.    wuerde ihm diese Altersweisheit gern abnehmen.
  1823.    
  1824.    Der Crash mit Crash war nicht das erste Mal, dass Meiers Ideen in der
  1825.    Umsetzung haperten. So kuendigt der eloquente Parleur seit 1990 seinen
  1826.    Kunstfilm "Snowball" an. Obwohl die Dreharbeiten schon seit Jahren
  1827.    abgeschlossen sind, hat noch niemand den Streifen gesehen. "25 Prozent
  1828.    der Negative wurden durch einen Unfall beschaedigt", gibt Meier an. Mit
  1829.    ein Grund fuer die mehrjaehrige Verspaetung duerfte aber sein, dass Meier,
  1830.    Regisseur und Kapitalgeber des ambitioesen Projekts, 160 Stunden
  1831.    Filmmaterial im Kasten hat und sich auf keine endgueltige Kinofassung
  1832.    festlegen kann. Dabei waere der Film enorm wichtig fuer sein
  1833.    unternehmerisches Weiterkommen, besonders fuer die Zukunft seiner
  1834.    amerikanischen Filmproduktionsgesellschaft. "Mein kommerzielles
  1835.    Ueberleben haengt davon ab, wie der Film in den USA ankommen wird."
  1836.    Hollywood, hat er gelernt, "ist ein gewaltiges Kasino mit gewaltigen
  1837.    Einsaetzen".
  1838.    
  1839.    Doch so schnell gibt der Filmemacher, Musiker und Dandy, der gerne
  1840.    auch Industrieller waere, nicht auf. Seinen Vater Walter, den heute
  1841.    83-jaehrigen Exdirektor der Privatbank Hoffmann, und seinen Bruder
  1842.    Balthasar, Besitzer der Luxusstrumpf-Marke Fogal, hatte er jahrelang
  1843.    am Familientisch mit wohlfeilen Ratschlaegen genervt, wie Business zu
  1844.    machen waere. Jetzt moechte Meier beweisen, dass er nicht nur wie ein
  1845.    Entrepreneur reden, sondern auch geschaeften kann - koste es, was es
  1846.    wolle. Das uebrigens kann es auch, da Meier ueber ein stattliches
  1847.    Vermoegen verfuegt.
  1848.    
  1849.    Nach der Bruchlandung mit der Crash-Uhr hat sich Dieter Meier fuers
  1850.    Produkt einen neuen Namen ausgedacht, der keine rechtlichen
  1851.    Schwierigkeiten mit der Konkurrenz provoziert: ReWatch. Nun freuen den
  1852.    Unternehmer in spe, der auch das tschechische Pilsnerbier Lobkov in
  1853.    die Schweiz importiert, schon bescheidene Anfangserfolge. Er redet
  1854.    nicht mehr davon, zehn Millionen Uhren absetzen zu wollen, sondern bis
  1855.    Mitte Jahr 50 000; bereits habe er 2500 Stueck verkauft, "was sehr
  1856.    beachtlich ist". Und gerne erzaehlt er, dass die renommierte "New York
  1857.    Times" und CNN ausfuehrlich ueber ReWatch berichteten. "Es besteht ein
  1858.    sehr grosses Interesse an dieser Uhr, und ich behaupte, dass wir in
  1859.    diesem Jahr auf die Beine kommen werden. Alle Anzeichen sind bestens."
  1860.    Dass es sein Produkt nur in 14 Laeden in New York zu kaufen gibt und
  1861.    die Oeko-Uhr mit einer Siliziumbatterie laeuft, haengt er nicht an die
  1862.    grosse Glocke.
  1863.    
  1864.    Da meldet sich aus dem Hintergrund ploetzlich die dazugestossene
  1865.    Yello-Haelfte Boris Blank zu Wort, dem Meiers Eigenpromotion in Sachen
  1866.    ReWatch etwas ungeheuer wird: "Unsere Band ist kein
  1867.    Gemischtwarenladen. Mit unserer Musik hat die Uhr nichts zu tun."
  1868.    
  1869.    Dieter Meier prueft ungeruehrt seine Frisur und reckt sein Pokerface in
  1870.    die Kamera. Denn was hat der Millionenerbe von seinem Vater gelernt?

  1872.    Zweifel, Kritik und Spott ertragen lernt."

  1967. Basically "Bananas to the Beat" and "Bostich" are the only tracks from "Solid
  1968. Pleasure" on "New Mix" and these are somewhat different from the original
  1969. versions. "Daily Disco", "The Evening's Young" and "Pinball Cha Cha" are the
  1970. "Claro Que Si" tracks and have also be changed substantially (for instance,
  1971. the spoken introduction to the "New Mix" version of "Daily Disco" is not on

  1974. I would say "Claro Que Si" is the better album personally but this is just
  1975. because it has one of my all-time favourite Yello tracks "She's Got a Gun".
  1976. However, in the UK both are available on mid-price: so I wouldn't imagine you
  1977. would break the bank by buying both.

  1979. "Solid Pleasure" is (not suprisingly) more like "Claro Que Si" than any other
  1980. Yello album (which isn't of much help to you !). Up until and including "You
  1981. Gotta Say Yes...", Yello had a third member: Carlos Peron and sounds that are
  1982. now produced by samplers were achieved by splicing together tapes. The early
  1983. albums therefore sound less "polished" than their successors. However, unlike
  1984. many groups Yello established their own distinctive sound very early on and
  1985. there is nothing like the gulf that say you get with Kraftwerk when comparing
  1986. "Ralf and Florian" to say "Trans Europe Express". It is not difficult to
  1987. recognise in "Solid Pleasure" the same group that would go onto make "Pocket
  1988. Universe" 17 years later. Only perhaps the guitar in "Blue Green" bears an
  1989. obvious debt to Pink Floyd (though this could also be said of "Desire").

  2014. The electronics are certainly rawer, but the sound is unmistakably 
  2015. Yello. The album's highpoint (and indeed, Yello's) is a track called 
  2016. 'Night Flanger' which is unlike anything else they have ever done - 
  2017. it's a low-slung, funky pop song which should have sold millions 
  2018. when released as a single. It has handclaps, backbeat electric piano 
  2019. chords and a Chico Hablas guitar break which is perfection on a 
  2020. six-string - piss off Clapton, Knopfler, Hendrix!

  2022. Despite everything else they've done - all that followed, all the 
  2023. classic tracks that get talked about on this group - I think this is

  2314. interesting for me because it's full of (good) news about Yello.

  2316. First, I thought I was the only heavy fan of YELLO (because of non adds
  2317. in France!) and then I was happy to know that it was wrong !

  2319. I can personnaly listen to Yello all days (that I do!) without to be sick
  2320. of it. Boris and Dieter are the best in their category. I love their work
  2321. and I hope that they will do long and long way in music yet.

  2323. I made some finals subjects with 06-25 in the biginning - it is the date I
  2324. planed to send them to XMISSION but because of my fast departure to the M.S.
  2325. I'd never could to send it !

  2419. Georg Plank's MP3 files are somehow mac-enveloped and will not play
  2420. generally.

  2552. Amiga-users on the net. Even for our computer there is a very good
  2553. mp3-decoding-utility available, which is CLI-based, but I think there als=
  2554. o
  2555. exists a graphical user-interface for it. I even heard rumours, that you =
  2556. can
  2557. download a plugin for "DeliTracker". All these freeware, shareware or pub=
  2558. lic
  2559. domain software can easily be found at an Aminet mirror. For example one =
  2560. is at
  2561. "ftp.uni-paderborn.de/aminet". The program I use to play mp3-samples with=
  2562. , is
  2563. located at "mus/play" and is called "mpeg3play". Other players can be fou=

  2635. being one of the best songs in the world: it's pumping in a very hard
