Subject: Rpl: (yello) German TV ad for new album??
Date: 01 Dec 1996 22:54:47 -0800 (PST)
Hi,
Jonas asked the German Yello fans about a tv ad for the new album.
No, I did not see one. Maybe on German MTV. But this is now pay-tv and MTV
does not play Yello at all, I think.
I also asked several cd stores around in Munich. No new album, no new single.
So my kids and I enjoy now jingle bells again, they like the techno version most.
Greetings to all Yello fans from snow white Munich
franz

Thanks for the info, Georg, but I didn't mean you when I wrote
that. I meant some other person who wrote that the album
would be released in a matter of weeks, and yet another
who mentioned a coming single "Wheels". I would still like
to know where you got this info from....
Another thing: I may sound cynical, but when Yello say "soon",
you should not take it too seriously. Remember what they wrote
in the Baby booklet? That the Snowball movie "will be out next
season". That was 1991.... 8-)

Jonas Warstad

It could be Yello, but there's no way to know just from listening to it --
there are oodles of commercials out there that have stolen their sound.
(Which this ad does very well. :-)

It could not be Yello at all. I don't hear any stolen samples there
and it doesn't sound Yello that much.
But, I do recall hearing and seeing this song on MTV Europe; the video is
some computer graphics flying thing. Perhaps we should watch the

Last night I went to see "the english patient" which was excellent ..I
went to see it in a Star movie theater which is in the Us only and for the
Star jingle they had a weird "oh yeah" type of song with all the right
samples. When I first heard it I was shocked to what a rip off that was
until I heard some real Yello samples in the back ground. So people that
live in the Us go to a Star if there is one around and see what you think??

Ye !
Yesterday I=B4ve got the new ON TRACK triple 12".
And for all of you, who want to know what exactly is this 3x12" package,
just go on reading:
The box is flashy-yellow on the outside with a giant black "Y" on the front=
.
You can open it like a book, and then you have to open it on each side again=
.
(Hope you can follow my descriptions. Now you have room for three 12" made
with yellow vinyl (what else) and on the lefthand side you can read the titl=
es.
A: ON TRACK - original version (5:33)
B: ON TRACK - Topkapis On Track Mix (5:43)
C: ON TRACK - by Awex (6:38)
C: ON TRACK - Doug Laurent=B4s First Journey (7:31)
D: ON TRACK - Doug Laurent=B4s Second Journey (7:17)
D: ON TRACK - by Timewriter (7:12)
E: ON TRACK - Hard Express Rhythm Masters (6:13)
=46: ON TRACK - Doug Laurent=B4s First Journey (6:57)
The numbers of the 12" are as followed: 578 629-1 / 578 631-1 /578 633-1
I=B4m not shure about the Doug Laurent mixes, they could be mixes made by
Boris. - Who knows ?
I=B4m not shure if they are promos, but I don=B4t think so. Maybe they are v=
ery
rare because of the Vinyl.
So go to your lokal vinyl-dealer to get the newest Yello stuff. It should be
available in Germany as well as in the UK.

Does the box (or set or whatever you call it) have a number?
From which record company does it come? (Urban, Mercury, Motor, etc)

Hi again!
Well, I think I brought some action to the yello-group.
So first of all I will answer all the questions you sent

> Please tell me what On Track sounds like!!!
If you mix "Do It !" with "Jungle Bill" it is very close
to the new "On Track" but in the beginning Dieter
speaks in a pathetic way to a ambient like groove.
In the middle part Dieter has a "Bostich"-like voice.
The main theme is very techno-like but with
lot of melody (yello-typical). Just imagine a high
speed train rushing around in the night...
I think I like it !!!

Well, I have not weared a t-shirt for many years. I don't know if it was

because I have used good shirts with studs since before I were in high
school (before 1984). (Makes me just a nerd, not a cool person, right? :-)
Now that it is winter and cold, I have a wool shirt (but still good
shirt under it). No jeans, by the way.
I like Dieter's and Boris's dressing style. It is only a matter of

At times when I'm fresh out of the shower, listening to one of my Yello
CD's, and my hair is slicked back, I get a certain expression on my face
which makes me look like Dieter. Wishful thinking, I guess, even though
my fiancee thinks I do, and she's not as much into Yello as I am.

elsewhere? If so, maybe I can persuade the record store to order it for
me...
One other question: Does anyone know why, on the Mercury/PolyGram CD of
_You Gotta Say Yes to Another Excess_, the song "I Love You" was
replaced with a re-mix? This CD version was released in 1988 and says
"Digital Version" on the cover. However, in that same year (before I
had a CD player) I bought _You Gotta Say Yes_ on cassette, and it was
put out by Elektra, not Mercury, and it had the original version of "I
Love You."
Any insight would be well appreciated, as would any recent news about
Yello (the official[?] website is 2 years old).

Subject: (yello) X-mas NEWS !!!
Date: 17 Dec 1996 14:05:34 +0100
Hello again....
Here are my Merry X-mas news:
A Swiss friend of me told me yesterday that the new Yello CD
will be definitely released in February =B497.
Yello will release a single in January with the title
"To The Sea" featuring a Swedish underground singer (female) to
promote the following "Pocket Universe" CD.
The CD itself is ready since November. (There might be some pre-releases
out for music-critics). Boris and Dieter made a promotion-show in
a Munich planetary. My friend is not sure, but he thinks that
the planetary is already playing some unofficial tracks of the new CD as
a sort of soundtrack to one of their space-films.
This would be a reason for the "Beyond Mirrors" words of Dieter.
But if somebody has the opportunity to check the planetary in Munich,
please take a audio-recorder with you - maybe you will hear specially
adapted versions of the new tracks.
I think most of this information is true because he got the information
from Peter Vitzthum.
He is the Yello-Manager for all the promotion-stuff. But he has nothing
to do with the music. He wrote the book for "Jetzt und Alles" an old Film
made by Dieter; and he also wrote the book for "Snowball".
(I am not able to say when the film will be released, even he does not want =
to
speak about this topic !).
Sorry, but that is all I
So I hope this information will give you more sleepless nights.
And with these lines I have to finish my internet and e-mail access for
this year at my university. I will be back next year after the winter
holidays in the mid of January.
So I wish you all a Jingle x-mas and happy new year from snowy-Austria.
Yours,
GEORG

I live here in the US as well, and have seen all the albums for sale
recently in larger CD places like Best Buy, including _Claro Que Si_.

I have no clue about that.
Glad to hear that the new album is moving along at a nice pace and
should be in our grubby little hands within months.
Finally, I have one question of my own to add to the discussion. In
"S.A.X." off of "Zebra", does anyone know why they decide to
describe "nightlife in Chicago"? I live in the Chicago area, and just
kinda curious. Did they visit the city once and really like. Any
chance they'll come back? 8-)

Chicago is known for its blues music - a big part of the nightlife there.
There are also alot of street corner musicians and I'd say the majority of
them are sax players.

Someone mentioned the anniversary of the sax: I believe this took place in
Belgium this or last year. I think this was in the news when Clinton
(Bill-not George) was in attendance.
Just so we cover all bases on this matter: Chicago had a baseball player
named Steve Sax.

It seems to me that the song is sort of a nod to the jungle genre, and so
chicago would be the natural "setting" for that. They have always dropped
city names in their songs, I don't suppose this is any different. But I
dunno.

"Deleted" means only that an album is no longer manufactured.
A certain amount of copies may still be around, unsold as of yet.
I have a spare copy each of Solid Pleasure and Claro Que Si,
if anyone have any problems getting hold of a copy. They're both
"original" German CDs, only played once. In that case, I'm interested
in trading with some forthcoming US CD-Maxis.

Please give me catalogue number and country (US?). It could be the
New Mix in One Go version from 1986, or even the 1983 single remix.
Tell me the duration (exactly, in minutes and seconds measured straight
off the CD clock). The single remix is the same as the LP in terms of
lyrics, but sounds somewhat "rougher" and has a fast-paced drum solo
where the famous "gong" is on the LP version. The 1986 version is very
different when it comes to lyrics, & re-edited. You should be able to tell
what version it is. If not, please mail me. (Do mail me in any case!! I'm
interested in what version it is!!)

Sorry Marty, it's "Tobago", not "Chicago". Boris sings of both places,
but never nightlife together with Chicago. They never played in Chicago,
only in Zurich (1979), London (1983), New York (1983), New York again
(1985), and most recently at a rave party in Germany (1995 I think).

Hello Thank you for translating I dont know what happened to my message
before the German page that I found on the Internet.
I was very curious about that but why doesn't Yello have a club? I
would like to start one but know nothing of how when why. What do you
people think? We should start one!!!
Happy New Year Julian

Subject: (yello) genre question
Date: 30 Dec 1996 12:37:51 -0800
One of the things that amazes me about yello is their ability to integrate
such a wide variety of dance music. You find everything from ska to mambo
to techno in the same song, and it all sounds natural together.
Recently I have been really getting into one particular thread in Yello's
music that I don't really know how to define. Fat brass sounds, catchy
trombone riffs... sort of big-band meets salsa, I guess. In particular,
the cuts that come to mind are "The Race" and "La Habanera" although there
are lots more. My question is this: from which sources do Yello borrow to
create this particular hybrid? I know it all kind of runs together, but I
am interested in finding a more "distilled" source of that sound. Is this
too vague?
Along those lines (but a little less Yello-related), is there anyone out
there who can recommend some good rock/pop/punk bands that really use brass
instruments well? Right now the things that come to mind are the Clash, Les
Negresses Vertes and the New Bad Things... a pretty disparate group but I
love that sound...
Thx,

i thought it was just a general latin american style rhythm, with a lot
of mambo thrown in for good measure... and it sounds great! i love 'On
The Run', especially loud when driving fast.
through most of ther albums there has been a south american motif be it
in the song titles or the musical style (eg Pinball Cha Cha - a
combination of the two). to me its a very particular, stylish rhythm; i
like it & hope they continue with it.
cheers all

I _love_ this style! Flag and Baby had plenty of it, and I'm dying for
more...

Oingo Boingo used to have a great brass section, up until their last album
(where there was virtually none). They're about the only rock group I've
ever heard that used brass in 99% of their songs, and it added some nice
"flavoring"...or something. :)

Anyone recall an article in the late '80's that referred to Yello as the
"Swiss Devo" ?
Also, there was a short run series about two years ago on FOX that was called
"The Edge" . A SNL/ Mad TV sort of thing that featured Julie Brown
("Homecoming Queen"-not "downtown").
The theme song was a variation of "Si Senor The Hairy Grill" (guitar only). I
wrote FOX to 1. Applaud them for having a trace of good taste 2. Ask if the
proper royalties were being paid.
A week or so later I saw the show with a different theme song???
Good to see so much activity coming from this newsgroup. Keep it up!

I wonder why? I happen to have this Total Devo CD which is far from
good. For example, drum sounds are way too hard and monotonous for
my taste. Yello instead mostly does have very ''kick ass'' drum sounds
which are powerful but not ever annoying as the traditional hard snare
Devo is using all of the time.
But, it was a small disappointment to hear such standard drum on Yello's
Tremendeous Pain song of Zebra. Though, that drum is not as hard as
Devo's.
If you like banging your head to wall, you like Devo. Would anyone
like to get the Total Devo CD I have?

Actually, that's probably Devo's worst album! Yeck. :) Their sounds have
changed several times from the 70's to the early 90's, like most
bands...not always for the better, but sometimes. Not sure why someone
would compare them to Yello though...I might see some vague similarities in
their innovation and quirkiness...

I do. Why? Do you have some kind of "Yello Theme" or something for
Descent2? Just Curious.

Hi!
First, A Happy New Yello Year 1997!!!
Secondly, I would like to give you a preview
of my updated Yello Page, at:
<http://www.algonet.se/~jonwar/yello.html>
It does not only consist of my famous (?)
non-LP tracks list anymore, but I have now
started on a complete discography. I've got
some good cards up my sleeve for this page,
and I won't tell you what they are, but I can
assure you some surprises later on.
I know that there are alrady some Yello discogs
on the net, but mine will be a little different...
Finally, a comment on a "Yello Club". We already
have one: the mailing list. What else do we need?
We're the true Yello fans, aren't we? The only thing
missing is an *alive* official Yello page, to inform
us about coming releases - this is our real problem!
Regards,
Jonas Warstad

Yeah, I feel compelled to speak up in Devo's defense here... Even though
they put out a few terrible albums their classic stuff is incomparable to
anything else. I wouldn't necessarily connect them with Yello, although
Devo did a lot of pretty cool video stuff too...

Well, last night I played one of my housemates some Yello and asked him my
"genre question," and he said it was Cuban music that I'm after... He
recommended a few bandleaders (Prima, Prado, Cachao, Machito--not sure if
I've got the spelling right). Anyone knowledgable?
Thnx,

First, there are Yello fans who are not in the network.
Second, we don't have connections to record companies in order
to get rare promo material to real Yello fans. We could maintain
Yello pages for free if they will offer us the needed contacts.
Third, we have to rely on poor record shops in order to get our
Yello material.
We could try to improve the activities of this mailing list.
I suggest we try to get direct contacts to Yello and in return
maintain their web-page for free. I think Jonas is perfect contact
person. Please make an offer for them.
I think maintaining their web-page is a good start. If they are
cooperative, we might start a real Yello Club someday. How about
a Yello Newsletter in the first place?
Ok, everybody are making discographies these days: Lazlo, a person in
Finland, Jonas, and even I have Yello Songs listing based on Lazlo's
official discography. Perhaps we could make just one discography
which satisfies all of us?

There's a record store around here that carries the "Tremendous Pain" CD
single and one or two of the "How How" remix 12"s. I remember reading
somewhere here about how one or the other of these is not very good, or that
they were not remixed by Yello, or something. I generally prefer their own
remixes to those of others (I think "Hands on Yello" is kind of boring,
actually)... Should I check out either of these?
thx,

Actually..both of those CD's have non-Yellow remixes on them, but I've
heard that Tremendous Pain is the worse of the 2.

I guess I'll add my two cents worth on this issue. First, you ought to buy
both so you're not disappointed.
I have two of the How How (#2 & #3) and prefer the Fluke mixes over the
Plutones. Sort of has an AmerIndian feel to it and would come in handy at any
year-end peyote ceremony one might be attending. As far as the plutone mixes
go- they seem to be far less accessible or listener friendly when compared to
the other. Possibly of greater benefit sometime late in the aforementioned
ceremony.
As far as the Tremendous mixes go: I only have a few that someone sent me on
tape, the details are unknown as far as who mixed them, etc. I would have
called them "auctioneer mixes" based on the vocal loop that dominates the
tracks. There's a cheesier "old school" sounding mix on it as well. If any
U.S. fans are familiar with a sports talk show host named Furrel, it would be
an ideal theme song or bumper track as he also does a run-on verbally that
sounds a lot like this.
I wouldn't mind someday opening up my annual Golmine fan club edition and
seeing a Yello entry. Why not?
Happy New Year,
Fred
