Subject: (yello) Canada Flag CD
Date: 31 May 2000 22:49:46 -0700
Hello fello YELLo's
I have a little tid bit of info for those of us who collect album cd's
from various countries.
After having the Canada Flag cd for 12 years now,
I am emmbarassed to admit I have only just recently noticed
that our issue of Flag contains a tenth bonus trak...
Tied Up in Fantasia(6:40)
Vertigo 836 426-2
The cd was released in 2 variant art styles.
White CD/ gold faunts,
and a mirrored silver CD/gold faunts.
This one looks more like a minature metal record with groves and a black
border around it,
when viewed under a light.
All other country releases of Flag contain only 9 traks.
Some "Candada Flags" were released with and without the bonus track.
Up till now all the disgogs list this mix as only available on 12".
I see the 10 track at local used stores now and then.
I would be happy to pick them up as I see them,
and trade them to other Yello fans for other country releases of cd
albums.
However, the silver cd may be a lot harder to obtain, as Ive only seen
one,
in the last 4 years of surfing our local used stores.
My wanted list of other Yello cd's are....
UK Flag
UK Pocket Universe(if unique and variant)
AU Baby
AU Flag
AU Flag/Stella(double album release with slip cover packaging)
AU Rubberbandman Cardsleeve cd single
GE Claro Que Si/ special price extra sleeve
GE Essential Christmas/ slip cover packaging
??? Flag/ sticker "Contains The Speeding Hit The Race"
any JP album or single release
or any other unique country release brought to my attention:)
Thanks for your time.
Sheldon

i expect what it means is that the documentary was produced by
Scottish TV, but for those unfamiliar with TV in the UK there are 2 or
3 independent broadcast TV companies in scotland. programmes are
usually syndicated around the UK to all the independent 'channel 3' TV
companies, and some such programs have ended up on European satellite
such as MTV channels and VH1 channels (UK digital), so there is hope!
ITV have a web site at http://www.itv.co.uk/ but in all honesty i have
no idea if it will have programming information. the company who
produced it should have a link off that site, if they have a web site.
if i find out any more i'll post something here...

Orbital are the most inventive electronic outfit around at present.
Their music is less dancefloor-oriented than a lot of their
contemporaries, but they don't have the flamboyant mid-European
feel of Yello, and there are no Dieter-style vocals. However, they
are excellent and deserving of your attention. Try the In-Sides
album or the 'Brown' Album first, with last year's Middle Of
Nowhere being a good introduction.
Cabaret Voltaire are gritty, bleak and industrial, although they went
through a Chicago House phase in the late 80s. Their music is
much harder and repetitive than Yello. The LPs to go for are the
early 80s efforts Microphonies and The Covenant, The Sword And
The Arm Of The Lord. Good stuff but not in Yello's ballpark.
Hope this helps

I heard that the CD in some countries was labelled wrong, with the track order
of "Capri Calling" and "Who's Gone" being reversed from the label. However,
it could be that "Ocean Club" and "Capri Calling" are switched. Have you tried
comparing the lyrics or song description in the booklet to the LP? Perhaps
you should listen to a few more songs over the phone to be sure that it isn't a
unique song, but simply a different order than the label.

Obviously, I'm new here. Has there been any discussion on this list
lately?
As many, I'm trying to find something similar to Yello. While I'm a fan of
synth music, and like many a piece of that sort of making, nothing that I

recommendations?

Subject: (yello) [Partly off topic] Cabaret Voltaire
Date: 14 Jun 2000 09:34:53 +1000
Would a Yello fan like Cabaret Voltaire? Well, this one does! But they
would not be for everyone and are quite different to Yello. I hope people
don't mind but I'd like to take some time to give people an insight into
their music. Sorry if this seems a bit of a late response but I get the
digest version of the list...
With the possible exception of "Warm" (a track which opens with a rhythm
containing samples of two people making love) their music is, as Andy says,
quite bleak and dark and not at all light and quirky like Yello's.
However, they are widely recognised, along with the likes of Throbbing
Gristle and 23 Skidoo, as innovative pioneers of early industrial music,
although their more recent work has become fairly derivative and
uninteresting. Repetitive imagery through their music, videos and lyrics
is of repressive control, whether it be by police, religion, or even
surgery or emotional control. A long way from Yello's common themes of
driving, love, and people who love driving. (Joke!)
There are several phases of Cabaret Voltaire's music:
1974-early 80's - 'true' industrial
Albums: 1974-79; Mix-Up; Voice of America; Live at the YMCA; Drain Train:
Red Mecca; The Living Legends; Johnny Yesno; 2x45; Hai
Also: Listen Up With Cabaret Voltaire
At this stage the band comprised Richard H Kirk, Stephen Mallinder and
Chris Watson. As one of the first industrial bands, the Cabs attempted to
imitate the grinding machinery, shrill whistles and clunking rhythms of the
industry of North England. Their equipment was pretty primitive, and
sounds it. Lots of hollow, tinny and shrill sounds, radio feedback, and
sampled pieces of spoken word often used in preference to lyrics. With
2x45, they started moving to a more accessible sound, with groovier
rhythms. This album features one of my fave tracks, "Breathe Deep", with a
military rhythm overlaid by a funky bassline, fragile percussion and watery
samples with a heavily distorted vocal. 'Hai' is a live album recorded in
Japan - Chris Watson isn't around, and although the tracks played are
generally from other albums around this period you can see the beginnings
of their next period coming through with a cooler, more sophisticated feel.
'Johnny Yesno' is a soundtrack for a low-budget film about a drug addict,
and 'Listen Up With...' is a more recent release of rare tracks that mostly
come from this period plus a few from the mid-80s.
Mid 80's - Industrial funk
Albums: Crackdown; Drinking Gasoline; The Covenant, the Sword and the Arm
of the Lord; Micro-Phonies; Code
Video: Gasoline in your Eye
Also: Radiation (aka Sex, Money, Freaks); Technology.
This is the most accessible period. Chris Watson left the band, and Kirk
and Mallinder started laying down groovy rhythms overlaid by staccato
basslines, jagged guitars, sax and the CV trademark percussive handclaps.
Mallinder lays down vocals with strictly metred lyrics that complement the
music well, becoming another rhythm line in themselves. Although the music
is markedly different, there are in my view a number of parallels that
could be drawn with Yello, and Andy is right to suggest that this would be
a good starting point for Yello fans interested in sampling a bit of this
band.
In my view the best work the Cabs did is the trio of the 4-track EP
'Drinking Gasoline', the subsequent album 'The Covenant, the Sword and the
Arm of the Lord' and the hour-long video 'Gasoline in your Eye' which
features videos for the four DG tracks, some from CSAL, and some other
otherwise unavailable tracks. All feature lush industrial funk
instrumentation, syncopated rhythms and in some cases are actually
danceable, if you don't mind abruptly stopping and starting from time to
time (I challenge you to dance to 'Big Funk' - difficult but quite an
experience!). The video footage is generally pretty dark - very low budget
and experimental, but in my view far more effective than the light fluff
Yello puts out as videos. Reinforcing the images of decay and control,
they feature looped, repetitive footage of dark rooms and corridors,
derilict buildings, winding staircases, opening doors, police marches,
running feet, and even electro-shock therapy. They complement the music
very well, showcasing a world of nightmares. Pretty heavy stuff, which
gives you a different perspective on the albums. Note that the CD
rerelease of CSAL contains 2 of the 4 tracks from Drinking Gasoline.
'Code' was produced by Adrian Sherwood of On-U Sound fame, and is the most
'pop'-like of the albums. This period was revisited by the Cabs in the
early '90s, when they put out 'Technology', a series of more accessible
dancy remixes of work from this time (in my view, none as good as the
originals) and the late '90s with the release of 'Radiation' containing
some live BBC recordings from this time.
Late '80s - '90s - Bleep Music
Albums include Groovy, Laid Back and Nasty; Colours; Percussive Force; The
Conversation
For me, the wheels started falling off the Cabs wagon in this period and I
lost interest in them. Trying to embrace the growing dance scene, Kirk
(the main muso) went to a sort of light techno that he called "Bleep
Music". When the lighter, more ambient bleeps and passive synth sounds
replaced the driving rhythms of the early '80s, the passion went out of the
music for me. I think Yello fans, used to more complex rhythms and unusual
sounds, would probably find anything from this period too bland for their
tastes.
The Cabs are together no more, as Mallinder has moved to Perth, Australia
while Kirk remains in England, working on a number of generally one-man
projects under a number of different names.
Hope this is of use to some people; like Yello, CV have brought me many
happy times and if this post helps just one person discover a band they
find interesting I think it's been worth it.

See I tend to differ. In a very noisy kind of way the 80s Cabaret v did
resemble Yello just a little. Being from the same era of older Yello Probably
the equipment made things sound similar more the anything (I don't think
there was that much to choose from).
In my opinion the albums from CODE on is my favorite work. Since then Richard
H Kirk has put out tuns of work, I think I have about 15 or so albums since
then. Richard puts out at least 2 albums a year! Hard to keep up with when he

At the risk of continuing this non-Yello topic too far...
[ From: Chris Norton <chris_norton@hotmail.com>
Thanks for the summary of Cabaret Voltaire. There was a lot I didn't know
about them. I, too, find Cabaret Voltaire to be interesting music in many of
the same ways that Yello are interesting: complex layers of sounds and catchy
rhythms.
[ Late '80s - '90s - Bleep Music
[ Albums include Groovy, Laid Back and Nasty; Colours; Percussive
[ Force; The Conversation
In my opinion, you left out the top two albums from this period: Plasticity
and International Language. Actually, International Language and The
Conversation may be tied for second place, but Plasticity is certainly one of
my favorites.
[ For me, the wheels started falling off the Cabs wagon in this
[ period and I lost interest in them. Trying to embrace the growing
[ dance scene, Kirk (the main muso) went to a sort of light techno
[ that he called "Bleep Music". When the lighter, more ambient
[ bleeps and passive synth sounds replaced the driving rhythms of
[ the early '80s, the passion went out of the music for me. I think
[ Yello fans, used to more complex rhythms and unusual sounds, would
[ probably find anything from this period too bland for their
[ tastes.
I think there are plenty of interesting rhythms on Plasticity and
International Language, and there is certainly enough subsonic bass to kill
most systems that aren't techno ready. For me, both Yello and Cabaret Voltaire
have tunes which sometimes seem like they belong on a soundtrack, and
sometimes seem like they belong on the dancefloor, or both. The new stuff
probably isn't as dark as the older, but there is still a trippy, drugged out
feel to their music which isn't anything like Yello.
[ The Cabs are together no more, as Mallinder has moved to Perth,
[ Australia while Kirk remains in England, working on a number of
[ generally one-man projects under a number of different names.
Kirk has releases as Sandoz, Electronic Eye, himself, Agents with false
memories, and others (Alphaphone? .. or is that a label?).

Hi JULZMON,

While William Orbit is surely nice, it doesn't quite get at me like Yello
does. The sounds don't have that torso-touching quality, to put it
this way.
However, I was recently given a tip on Napster: Art of Noise.
After listening to some pieces, I'd say the feeling is of a similar
quality as Yello. Possibly not with the same perfection, but the effect
goes in that way.
Another great artist to check out is myth. I know of him from the game
creation system scene around MZX/ZZT (if that tells you anything) He
tracks very detailed pieces. Not at all Yello style, but rather quiet and
calm, usually. You can download several of his pieces here:

Hi all,
if anyone is interested, there's a #Yello IRC channel on Austnet. It's not
yet populated, but it'd be great if anyone came, to chat about Yello or
other random issues interesting to Yello fans ;-)

I've been a big fan of the Art Of Noise for a long time now.
In the 80's they were more of a dance, sometimes ambient style. Some very
alternative.
The unfortunately they broke up early 90's but they have got together again
and made a new album called "the Seduction of Cluade Debussy".
This album just oozes class.
If ya want a listen, e-mail me directly. ( Simon@imagingtechnology.com.au )

talked for a few hours about loads of shit, but he did
say that early yello was a major source influence in

Greetings to all.
after some discussion on the matter with a number of people, and some
poking & prodding, I would like to officially bring to the attention
of the list that I have created (some time ago) a chat channel on the
austnet IRC network devoted to Yello.
The channel is quite small at present, but with support, that
hopefully will change.=20
given the time differences around the world, with some on the list in
the US, some in europe & some in Australasia picking a time good for
everyone is hard, so whenever you can just pop in & spread the word we
all know about how good Yello is. My handle is Galron, and am often in
from 1030gmt until 1230gmt.
The Channel is #Yello
Come & spread the word.

Subject: (yello) Re: Art Of Noise, Other Recommendations
Date: 21 Jun 2000 11:56:00 -0600
This thread has inspire me to burn a compilation cd of Yello=20
recommendations. I'll post when it's finished.
=20
I must agree that Art of Noise and Yello have a very similar overall=20
feel, and strongly recommend any of their output from the 80's to a=20
Yello fan. I'm very disappointed in 'Seduction of Claude Debussy',=20
however. Not nearly so innovative as most of their stuff. I recommend=20
'In Visible Silence' (my fav), 'In No Sense? Nonsense!', or 'Daft' =
which=20
encompasses their works on ZTT label. 'The Ambient Collection'=20
remixed by the Orb and Youth is a great remix CD that is very true to=20
the original works. 'The Drum 'n Bass Collection' is also a good remix=20
CD, though fairly intrusive to the source material. 'FON Mixes' sucks.=20
I'm trying to sell my copy.=20
=20
To repeat an earlier post, I also recommend Juno Reactor's 'Bible Of=20
Dreams'. The first time I heard this CD I immediately thought, "is=20
this Yello?". They site Yello as a major influence. They use some live=20
percussion and on one track 'Swamp Thing', they have a raging guitar.
Reminds me of 'Si Senor, The Hairy Grill' and 'Domingo'.=20
=20
The Grid has track by the same name, and Dieter does some vocals=20
for the Grid on their '456' CD. It's not bad, but not one of my strong=20
recommendations.
=20
I'm on a roll so I'll spew some more recommendations.
=20
OMD: Architecture And Morality. Their early output was very=20
interesting and experimental, but they migrated to pure pop. Avoid=20
anything post '88. Their first self-title recording is very primitive, =
like=20
early DEVO. 'Organization' and 'Dazzle Ships' get a high Yello-
recommendation. 'Junk Culture', 'Crush', and 'Pacific Age' are good=20
pop CD's but not very Yello-ish.
=20
Brian Eno: Nerve Net. He's been doing experimental electronic music=20
for 3 decades now and knows a thing or two. 'Nerve Net' is my=20
recommendation for a Yello fan to start exploring Eno's huge library.
=20
Eurythmics: Sweet Dreams, Touch, and 1984, though a bit poppy,=20
they have lots of innovative synthetics.
=20
Fact 22: Biographic Hum. If you can find it give it a try.
=20
Underworld: Second toughest in the infants. An incredible CD. My=20
standing fav.
=20
Nine Inch Nails: Pretty Hate Machine. Not nearly as abrasive as NIN's
other releases, it is still angry. This cd is full of lush manipulated=20
sound environments. If you like Yello's 'Domingo', 'Si Senor, The Hairy=20
Grill', 'Tied Up In Gear'... you should give this one a try.
=20
Alphaville: Forever Young. A great synth production. A few dark=20
moody Yello-ish tracks in with the pop. Dieter did video work with=20
Alphaville.

You should also include the following group, when putting together a
collection:
Ozric Tentacles.
Any of their CD's are good, although Erpland or Pungent Effulgent are two
strong starters.
Despite their collection being described as more a sort of "hippie" music as
my less educated friends tend to refer to them, I feel that they possess THE
best synthesizer music today, performed in an interesting style which is all
their own ;-)
I was fairly skeptical when initially told about them, however, I have since
picked up almost every CD and LP they have released. As with Yello, there is
a considerable amount of material, also going back quite a long time. Hope
you enjoy it as much as I have.

Long time no type!
Thanks Larry for your recommendations for us Yello fans.
I quite agree with you about Art of Noise. 'In Visible Silence'
and 'In No Sense? Nonsense!' are my favourites too.
And I've been looking for other Eno material ever since I
found 'Life in the Bush of Ghosts' - a collaboration with David
Byrne from Talking Heads - this is also a great favourite of mine,
although a very old tape now.
A good Feat friend of mine has just finished recording his CD under
the name 'Otis P Spunkmeyer' (weird or what?) and on first listen
there's a lot of Yello influence. I mentioned this to him and he said
he'd heard of them, but only old stuff like The Race.
Sooooooo..... here's a good opportunity for me to turn him on to
the more recent stuff. A sample tape will be winging its way to him!

Hi all!
As Jonas already pointed out a couple of weeks ago, Dieter Meier made a
collaboration with the two German DJs 'Blank & Jones' [it is 'Piet'
Blank not 'Boris' this time].
For those of you who are interested here are the lyrics of Dieter's
intro speech:
DJ CULTURE
are you ready?
are you ready now?
in the world of machines
- virtual machines -
dominated by software
everything is cold
cold as ice.
the quintessential synthesis of silence
a vibrating galaxy
an invisible spectrum of waves
and hidden behind a gigantic shadow of alpha centauris
signs of galertic light
and life
figures finding form
culture
dance culture
a manifesto of cult
dj cult
blank and jones
the druids of rave
warm - suddenly warm
dancing molecular structures creating human bodies
awakening human minds
silent suns turning purple
orange
red
blank and jones
a pulsating universe beyond time and space
the perception of sound - human forms
and then
rhythm
eyes wide open drinking from the light of rave
a new culture is born
dj culture
move your body
find yourself
And here you can find the intro as mp3 [for limited time only!]:
http://www.schmauch.de/ANewCultureIsBorn.mp3 [2.3MB]
If you wanna find out more about 'Blank & Jones' buy their latest CD 'DJ
Culture' and visit their website at:
http://www.blankandjones.de
If you wanna find out more about me ;-)), visit:
http://www.schmauch.de
In my opinion 'A New Culture Is Born' is far from being as good as the
intro and outro on Yello's 'Pocket Universe', but give it a try and find
out for yourself!

Matthias Egerland

No this is only one of those lousy bootlegs going arount in the net.
They only contain some tracks also available in every CD-store
Some are also made up with mp3 files.
The only "real bootleg" I know is the cut of the Madyday-Event in

Subject: (yello) Yello Fan Recommendation
Date: 30 Jun 2000 09:26:03 -0500
Rarely do I ever make recommendations on other artists for Yello fans. But,
in the off months while Yello isn't brewing new material, I have to turn to
other sources.
I've come to the belief that most of the folks who enjoy Yello do so because
of the artistic side of their music (which, IMO, sort of took a back seat
with Motion Picture -- Pocket Universe and Zebra are my two favorite albums
of artistic merit) as well as the sound. Nonetheless, I think we can all
appreciate true musicians and true artists when we find them.
Rarely do I feel strongly about and artist and their merits and when I do, I
feel the need to share their work with others. That's why I'm bringing up
this recommendation.
I think you all need to check out this fantastic group from Amsterdam known
to the masses as "Arling & Cameron". For those of you in Europe or Japan,
you may have already heard of them. They are, many times, credited as the
founders of the "easy tune" movement.
I would be willing to venture that these two are the next generation Yello.
Musically, they are slightly different, but their music shares the same
sense of humor and appeal that Yello does (for me).
The two "retail" albums they have are their best work (they even agree to
this). I am more partial to the first album "All-In" but their second work,
"Music for Imaginary Films", is extremely creative.
Be sure to give them a listen. I'll share a couple of MP3s on the FTP server
is anybody wants to post the URL.
