Subject: (yello) Thoughts ...

Just some thoughts in response to somethings that somebody said at sometime
during the past couple of lists ... I think that covers everything.
Firstly, I too would also like to see a whole album of instrumentals like
L'Hotel or Tool in Rose (great one for annoying the neighbours and blowing
your headphones/earphones/pet squirrel ... ). The cinematic feel really
comes together when there are/is no vocals ... sometimes.
Secondly many years ago (ten, I think), I heard an interview on Forth FM
(Scottish indie radio station) with the late, sadly missed Billy Mackenzie,
and one of the projects in his pipeline at that time was to do an album with
Boris producing. Nothing came of this, and probably they only did a few
tracks together on his next album ... stop me if I'm babbling wildly ... But
(wishfull thinking, hindsight and all that ...) Wouldn't it have been a nice
thought to have gotten a Mr Boris Blank to finish off the posthumous last
Billy Mackenzie album considering that they did some really great stuff
together?
Ah, the babblings of a romantic. In another universe there is a Yello
group: Boris Blank, Dieter Mieier, Carlos Peron, Billy Mackenzie, Beat Ash,
and the great Chico Hablas ... What a group!!!
Right time for my pill ...
Best wishes
Schtick

How long ago was this ? How many albums did he release ?
I would greatly apreciate more info on this.

Billy died in 1997 - he committed suicide at home on his whippet
farm in Auchterhouse, just north of Dundee (where I live and work).
Since his death his last LP 'Beyond The Sun' was released to great
critical acclaim, and a further LP with Paul Haig was released
earlier this year. It is planned to release a whole pile of previously
unheard material over the next few years.
The last LP released before his death 'Outernational' contains
about 4 tracks produced by Boris Blank and is a great LP,
although fairly scarce these days.
There is a great book entitled 'The Glamour Chase' which
chronicles the life and music of this extraordinary talent...I can
recommend it heartily.
I hope this helps, although it gives me no pleasure to provide the
detail on such a sad event in recent music history.

Hi folks !
Could you imagine an ad for a european car constructor (Seat)
presenting its new model and earing the "Squeeze Please" in
background ?
Yes of course. We all know that television and others use a lot of
Yello material.
BUT have you ever imagine that the spot itself write at its begening
that "the song you're earing is from Yello" !!??
Yes. That's reality. Never seen that before. Great.
Could it be some masked advertising for Yello ?

Chico and Beat used to be such a great addition to sound of Yello. I'm sad =
that they=20
have been completly phased out. Anyone have any insight about why this was =
and=20
what happened to them? I'd love for them to record with Yello again.
This reminded me of something I've been wondering for some time. On =
'Baby', Ernst=20
Gamper is credited for guitar on 'Capri Calling'. Wasn't he the artist for =
all the album=20
covers from '...Excess' through 'Baby'? I often wondered if the guitar =
credit was an error.
I also miss his work as a very distinct part of Yello products. (Though =
Zebra is my fav=20
Yello cover, which he did not do.)
Thanks for the responses to my post about who compares to Yello. Yea to =
the Art Of Noise response. Creative equals at least. I'd suggest Brian Eno =
is a pioneer of this 'cinimatic' music, though his spectrum of styles is =
very wide, so only a portion of his recordings are 'cinematic'. (Apollo, =
Nerve Net, others.) Peter Gabriel's soundtracks, Passion (Last Temptation =
of Christ), and Birdy are both very emmersive and compare/contrast well =
with Yello. I was recently introduced to Juno Reactor. I almost mistook =
'Bible of Dreams' for a Yello production. I found an interview noting =
Yello as one of their influences.

Subject: (yello) The Adventures of Ford Fairlane
Date: 26 Mar 2000 16:46:19 +0300
Hello, Yello fans!
It's been a long time since my last post, but hopefully you didn't forget me
:-)
Well, yesterday I saw a movie on the TV. It was "The Adventures of Ford
Fairlane". Probably it's a well-known fact, but for me it was a surprise to
hear lots of Yello music in the movie. Unfortunately I didn't catch the
titles to be sure, but seems to me the soundtrack is almost completely made
by Yello. Though, there are some songs from other artists, e.g. Billy Idol.
First of all, one of my favorites "Unbelievable" comes directly from this
movie, its lyrics is compiled from the movie's cues. Then, what was
surprising, there is lots of tracks from "Baby" that's released in 1991, and
the movie itself is released in 1990.
This movie is a comedy with lots of action. Ford "Mr. Rock n' Roll
Detective" Fairlane is experiencing problems, and it's not with the opposite
sex. One of them is that all the rock stars pay him with drum sticks, koala
bears, food processors and bicycle shorts. Another one of them is that all
his employers that want him to find a girl named Zuzu Petals get killed. Why
didn't he become a fisherman's detective instead? It's a fun movie!
Did someone else see this? I'd like to know your opinions.
Best regards, Serge.

I saw it & classified it as "Not that bad" when it came out.
I wanted to see it do well so Yello could bask in the limelight for a bit
but unfortunately Mr. Dice Clay was out of political correctness with the
media at precisely that moment.
The storyline appears to be a template for the Ace Ventura-Pet Dectective
which would come out a few years afterward to huge box office acclaim.

Ford Fairlane is one of my all time favorite movies. It still cracks me up
to this day.
And yes, the soundtrack was done by Yello.
You'll see in the beginning credits that it says Soundtrack by Yello.
Funny thing is, the soundtrack to the movie only has I think, from memory,
one Yello song on it. (and it's a remix)
Almost all the song in the movie are on "Baby".
I think that is one of their best albums.

I like the Ford Fairlane movie too, so I was disappointed when I listened
to the soundtrack album, and realized, as Simon wrote that only
"Unbelievable" by Yello was on it. And unfortunately, it's filled with cuts
from the movie, which are - imho - quite badly put into the music...
But it still sounds well in the movie!

Boris Blank produced (+wrote music for?) "Snowball", and "Because You
Love" has a definite Yello feel to it so I guess he produced that one
too. Maybe this is all Boris meant by his "archive of unreleased Billy

Here's hoping... maybe someone on the Yello mailing list could shed some
light?
I must vote for Country Boy too - I think it's lovely, a real 20's sound
to it and lyrics that can make you cry.
It's just (another) guess, but maybe the documentary will be timed to
coincide with the Sulk re-release? If so, that'd put it around June.
And English TV is mostly the same as Scottish TV, except for the
Beechgrove Garden (think "Ground Force" but without the glamour). So
even if it's an STV production, it could still be shown at the same time
in Angleland.

Very silly stupid. I like it. But I like silly stupid things :)
Not much Yello in it. Mostly sounds like Pocket Univerce intrumentals. Very
techno 4/4 only lasts for a short while through the movie.
