  80. Sorry to hear about the frustration going on trying to get a copy of M.P.=

  82. got real lucky and found a copy in a secondhand CD shop in Manchester (a
  83. discarded review copy?) for a mere =A37.99!! I've also seen a copy going =

  85. =A314.99 in my home town of Hull.
  86. I've had time to get used to this album and I now reckon it's as good if =

  88. better than P.U. (and that one was to my mind the best since Flag). It's
  89. nice to put on tracks like Distant Mirror in front of my club-going frien=

  91. who accept it totally as high quality contemporary chilling electronic mu=

  93. before being told, well, this is Yello. "Really?" they say in surprise, "=

  95. it off then".. but you get the idea. Point Blank is a fabulous piece of
  96. music, Cyclops is like Massive Attack meets Wagner in Switzerland. I thou=

  100. hedge around the fact that that is indeed part of the intent behind it
  101. (despite Dieter saying that the Millenium thing is a load of old cobblers=

  128. A Highway Patrolman waited outside a popular local
  129. bar, hoping for a bust.  At  closing time, as everyone came out, he spotted
  130. his potential quarry. The man was so obviously inebriated that he could
  131. barely walk.

  133. He stumbled around the  parking lot for a few minutes, looking for his car.
  134. After trying his keys  on  five others, he finally found his own vehicle. He
  135. sat in the car a good ten minutes, as the other patrons left. He turned his
  136. lights on,  then off, wipers on, then off.  He started to pull forward into
  137. the grass,  then stopped.

  139. Finally when he was the last car, he pulled out onto the road and started to
  140. drive away. The Patrolman, waiting
  141. for this, turned on his lights and pulled the man over. He administered the
  142. breathalyzer test, and to his great surprise, the man blew  a  0.00!

  181. My copy only arrived in the post this morning from Hotstuff in Sweden.
  182. So far I've only had chance to listen to it partly before breakfast, and
  183. on the way to work, but first impressions are very good. Very good
  184. indeed. Well worth the wait, I'd say. Worked out around =A314 including
  185. P&P.

  258. with question marks i am not sure of, all the rest i am reasonably
  259. certain about unless you strongly believe differently. the words
  260. should be in context so where the words make "yello-sense" will fit
  261. best. i've put some repeats in, but not all.

  264. can be clearly understood, there are snatches or words but i've not
  265. put them in (yet).

  842. good time because there were new releases by three of my favorite artists:
  843. Motion Picture by Yello, Night Life by Pet Shop Boys, and Quiet Revolution
  844. by Chris De Burgh, and also "Anthology" a new compilation by Oingo Boingo.

  846. Naturally I will only comment on Yello's Motion Picture, because after all
  847. this is the Yello mailing list. Well, very briefly let me express that I'm
  848. quite satisfied with this new album. It is done in the classic Yello style
  849. with a sound similar to the 80's albums, and I really dig the 80's stuff:)

  986. Over the past months/years I've tried to describe how tough it is to be a
  987. Yello fan in Colorado, I think there are about 5 of us in the state!  Here's
  988. my story of woe to finding Motion Picture:

  990. I first noticed that MP was listed on Amazon.com for the outrageous price of
  991. $29.95 plus shipping and handling, wanting the disk very badly I decided to
  992. go ahead and order it.  It was immediately backordered.  Ok I thought most
  993. Amazon backorders are only a few days.  Days turned into weeks, nothing.
  994. Then in this very group I saw someone say CD Universe has MP, so I go to CD
  995. Universe and yes they do have it, and it says "In Stock" it was also about
  996. $5.00 cheaper, great I thought as I ordered it. Then returned to Amazon and
  997. cancel my previous order.  When I get my confirmation my heart sank as I saw
  998. those dreaded words ON BACKORDER.  Again a few days turned into a couple of
  999. weeks, as I was cruzing on CDNow to my surprise they now list MP (this was a
  1000. surprise because CDNow have not carried the past couple of releases).  Again
  1001. I check availability and they list In Stock.  So once again I order MP and
  1002. go to CD Universe and cancel my order.  Sure enough patient reader CDNow
  1003. also backordered the disk but within two days I got a confirmation on
  1004. shipment.
  1005.  
  1006. So after three tries I finally get MP.  My thoughts on it?  It's a good
  1007. album, equal to but not better than PU, in fact I really think I like PU a
  1008. little better (with the exception of the dreadful To The Sea).  But now I
  1009. was in CD Now this morning and saw they are now listing Squeeze Please, of
  1010. course I ordered it and of course it's backordered.
  1011.  
  1012. So after all this and carefully listening to the album several times a
  1013. question to the group, and an observation.
  1014.  
  1015. Question;  Which comes first the music or the lyrics?
  1016.  
  1017. Observation:  This is going to rub some people the wrong way, and if so I
  1018. apologise in advance, it would appear to me that Dieter is writing the
  1019. lyrics before Boris is writing the music.  This would IMHO explain the
  1020. blandness of the last couple of albums.  Dieter appears to be stuck in his
  1021. mini-movie mode, Boris is doing the best he can with what little Dieter is
  1022. offering.  I'll state this after reading the song notes in the CD booklet.
  1023. Dieter has been doing basically the same thing since Flag.  I believe Dieter
  1024. should sit down and write a novel and really flush out his thoughts, or
  1025. perhaps a screenplay, something and clear this current line of thought out
  1026. of his mind.  Boris is obviously ready to move on to more challenging music.
  1027.  
  1028. I dearly love Yello and have been a devoted fan for more than 20 years,
  1029. however it seems that Yello has gone lower and lower on Dieters priority
  1030. list.  MP sounds like parts of the last 5 Yello albums all rolled into one.
  1031. It sounds like he spent maybe a day working on these lyrics.

  1072. I remember reading an article many years ago where Dieter states
  1073. that generally, he meets with Boris, listens to the music he's been
  1074. working on, and if he sees a movie in his head, he'll write lyrics for
  1075. that movie. The songs that don't 'inspire' a cerebral cinematic event
  1076. wind up as the instrumentals. I think this does explain how many
  1077. of their lyrical elements carry over album to album. Deiter and Boris
  1078. have a wonderful way of working together, and if it's a formula, my
  1079. own opinion is that they shouldn't change it.
  1080. I do agree with you that Dieter should write a novel. That would be
  1081. very cool!

  1236. the thing about lyrics is that they form part of the music, more 
  1237. particularly the rhythm, rather than give 'meaning' to a song.
  1238.  
  1239. think of nursery rhymes, they are a rhythm, and it is far more complex 
  1240. that beating out any drum.
  1241.  
  1242. so for that reason, i think artistic licence is used to write lyrics 
  1243. which may not make much sense, but the words sound better, that is why 
  1244. often lyrics do not make proper syntax in whatever language they are 
  1245. written, and why we have difficulty understanding them.
  1246.  
  1247. i think their rhythmic qualities are as important as the words 
  1248. themselves, i always think to the record 'the lone ranger' by 'quantum 
  1249. jump' in the early 80's with the 'taumatawangy...' in it !
  1250.  
  1251. as to yello, they have story songs, which more often are spoken, they 
  1252. create a real atmosphere, a scene in the minds eye with the music and 
  1253. the words. the songs with lyrics are more open to interpretation, 
  1254. which in many ways is better, because it means you can make the song 
  1255. important to you, it says what the listener wants it to, so the lyric 
  1256. can be deliberately ambiguous just for that reason.
  1257.  
  1258. and finally i've not forgotten the MP lyric transcription, i had a few 
  1259. reply with corrections and thoughts on what i'd originally sent out, 
  1260. and when i've  had some time with the CD on A/B to review, i'll 
  1261. reissue...

  1286. I found a copy of the "Live at the Roxy" CDS last night.  I must warn you=

  1288. it is a bit scratched, and the cover has been bent (as if a previous owne=

  1290. shoved it into a normal jewel-box).  Aside from that, it is fine, and not
  1291. easy to find these days.

  1293. Rather than trying to sell it on EBay, I'd like to trade for some Yello
  1294. items I may not have.  I can think of:

  1296. the 7" or 12" with "I.T. Splash"
  1297.  
  1298. "Squeeze Please" CDS
  1299.  
  1300. "On Track" DJ-pack (this is probably not an even trade; let's work
  1301. something out)

  1303. other oddities that may be of interest

  1305. Lastly, I found _Motion Picture_ as well locally (Chicago) after all this
  1306. time.  However I got home too late to be able to listen yet.

  1334. I recall reading an interview with Dieter in which he talks about '3rd of 
  1335. June'. If I recall, Dieter first came up with the drum rhythm heard in 
  1336. the opening, and the music came after that.
