> I would like to know the real legislation about spreading mp3s !!!
In the U.S. consumers are protected by "personal use" legislation that allow
consumers to copy audio and video content between media formats. The reason for
this is that what you are paying for is the right to listen/view the "art", not own
the cd/tape/lp/dvd/vhs that was used to distribute the material.
Where the law is very specific is with regards to wholesale distribution of
copyrighted material, regardless of whether it is for profit or not. If you have
not specifically been given the right to distribute the material, it is irrelavent
whether it's an mp3 or an 8-track.
The grey area is how far your personal use can extend, (i.e. making a compilation
tape for a friend).
What is disturbing about (illegal) mp3 distribution over the internet is that it is
making a strong case for record manufacturers, who have been fighting "personal
use" rights from the day they were given to us, to have them legally taken away.
I believe we will at least see some changes in the law regarding digital
reproduction. There is a fine line that manufacturers are walking when they add
copy protection to digital media. They are virtually violating our personal use
rights, and I suspect with DVD and encrypted mpX formats, either our personal use
rights will change, or there will be a lot of class action lawsuits against
manufacturers happening.

Here is a site I found concerning formal legality of MP3 ownership,
distribution and recording. More or less it is an in-depth article written by
Bob Kohn, Chairman GoodNoise Corp., and former legal counsel for several hi
profile recording, dist. companies. It is considerably wordy, but very
informative, albeit too informative.

Dear yello-digest
I am very concerned about the state of YELLO in the world. Have they
ever been less popular? The people at their record company need shooting
for the complete lack of effort that went into promoting PU. This should
have put them right back where they belonged, it is a superb album.
Maybe our heroes couldn't be bothered promoting it either? There were
some very good reviews in British dance magazines but I don't think
anyone else knew about it. Now there is this new album and I haven't
even seen it anywhere. I know I can order it but that isn't the point -
I shouldn't need to! This isn't some brilliant but obscure band (like
The Residents) this is a goddamn internationally known, influencial,
brilliant duo we're talking about. There was an expensive video made for
"To The Sea" wasn't there? I never got to see it once. Yello - that band
in the 80s who did The Race. That's the current stupid thinking on them
here. It's tragic! Where are Yello?!!

Sounds yukky. Did anyone like "Ice Machine" which Dieter sang on The
Grid's first album.

No. Doesn't really matter HOW good an artist is -
Yello had superb talent - but didn't let the world know!

Yo, Yo, Yello...
I have never head anything about "fan club products" of Yello. I think
that Yello above that business, because they simply do their music and
that is what they want to offer to Yello fans. They don't have to do any
t-shirts and so on because they are so _COOL_, you know? :-)
If one wanted some t-shirts, why wouldn't one just do like my wife
does... make them oneselves with scanner and conmputer... and gives it
to her housdand.
I am glad that Yello is doing nothing fan stuff, better way is that they
put all they power to their music, let Backsreetboyz and Boysones do
those fan stuffs... ;-)

That's funny... I got my copy of "Powertrancefer" in December last =
year from CyberCD
<http://www.CyberCD.de>.
It is very much a 'techno'-sounding album.
Maybe the new release is something else...?
