Subject: (yello) Yello Fanaticism
I've been reading some posts lately and I want to know if anyone has had
similar experiences with exposing new people to Yello...
I've tried a number of people at my office, a number of friends, and my
(former) girlfriends. None of them got into it. The closest I came was my
last ex-girlfriend liking Suite 909 a little - but not enough to want a copy
or to buy the CD. I can't understand why no one else can see what I do in
Yello...
I don't think Yello really has to do with gender either. I see their music
as icons of internationalism. It is true "world" music. There is pretty much
something for everyone, 'cept the country music fans really.
I also don't understand the recent survey results that had Zebra as one of
the worst albums. Zebra, Pocket Universe, and Baby are my favourite albums -
in that order. I absolutely love the Brazillian feel of Baby, the funky
quasi-Latin feel of Zebra, and the bleeding edge audiophile quality of
Pocket Universe (which is now my favourite stereo benchmarking CD).
I'd also be interested to see how many Yello fans are audiophiles...

Hear Hear.
This is exactly right. It must be the decision of the artist.
But when are we going to ask them?
By the way, what are you doing on this list. There's a list with smarter

Just beware of what you're doing. I heard a discussion on the swedish
national radio yesterday where people from a couple of record companies
and representatives from the musicians organisation (those who make sure
that the musicians get their money when their songs are played) and they
talked about the problem with music beeing spread on the Internet.
These people seem to work pretty hard to hunt down those who without OK
from the composers expose their music on the net. People have actually
been draged into court and convicted for it. And there was also talk
about makeing those who own the servers responsible. It seems that they
have a staff of people who constantly are scanning the net. So when you
do this, remember that it is illegal, and before it's done I think that
Dieter and Boris should have their saying.
If we like them, we should also respect them.

Eric

I've had the experience that people who have heard bits of YELLO in the
background (and we all have), know it's YELLO if they liked it.
Maybe your quest to expand the Yello crowd explains why you have so many
ex-girlfriends.
My soon-to-be wife hates yello and I'm not gonna swing her vote.
By the way if anybody ever wants to talk about what is wrong with men or
women, i'll set up a list large enough to keep you all hiding for months.
There is, was and always will be a difference between ALL people, all
gender, all rases and all musiclovers. Live with it.

Yes. No matter what the circumstances, it would only
be fair if Yello had the final word on whether their music
should be previewed this way.
However, the frustrating thing for us Yello fans; is that we
*want* as many people as possible to enjoy Yello's music.
I would much rather Yello ploughed money into marketing
themselves, just to get the recognition that they so surely deserve.
C'est la vie.

Yello-pieces? Of course! I've got 18 (if the CD singles collection

From my point of view, a hi-fi enthusiast is a person who usually pays more
attention to technical issues related to recording and reproduction of music
than to the music itself. Anyway, I may be wrong...

Subject: (yello) Audiophile
The dictionary discribes the topic as I answered it.
The age of mono recording has passed. The age of surround recording might
never come.
Why? Because stereo is here to stay.
The tube amplifier has left but, for some of us came back.
Why is that? Maybe it is because only a violin sounds like a violin.
We have to face the fact we are dealing with recordings. If the quality of
recording wouldn't matter, we'd all be using tape.
We also have to face the possibilities of an amplifier and the wide
varieties in sounds.
Generally, if you never heard or thought about things as white noise,
reverb, oscillation... you might never hear them but the moment you do, you
know this is not a part of the original sound and want to clear it as good
as possible.
Signs of audiophiles:
- - expensive CD player
- - either very good speakers or a very good headset
- - doesn't like stuff on tape.
Please say you don't agree.
Lets give new meaning to the word.

I'm lucky to say that altohugh I'm a fan of country music I'm dead
serious fan of Yello aswell!
Regarding your question about whether Yello-fans are audiophiles, I'd
like to put it this way: I've never met a Yello-fan who turned into an
audiophile, but I know many audiophiles who have started digging Yello
in a serious way after being introduced to their music. The conclusion
is that it only seems to work in one way.

Current mp3 collection contains songs from recent CDs still sold at

I'd love to, since most audiophiles are very boring when it comes to
listening to music and loving it!
The word audiophile suggests that its meaning should be "friend of
sound" and that, I guess, could very well be a description of Boris,
couldn't it!
That meaning of the word suggests a person who loves hearing things,
listening to new sounds and who's amazed by the differencies between
voices. With this meaning of the word I think many more would like to
call them selves audiophiles and I definitely think that it would be
good.
Unfortunately I don't think it's easy to make that change...
Take care!

My first contribution is up there for you all to enjoy - a live version of

Over the next days I'll put up Haunted House - just because you've all

Also - If anybody is interested, I'll put up "The Yello Metropolitan Mixdown

different than the version on Pocket Universe.
You can snag the video clip from MTV's web site by going to www.mtv.com,
Tubescan, select the show "AMP", then click on the appropriate letter.
Notice their mis-spelling of "Yello" as "Yellow" - shows how much they know.

Hello again,
This is the last 24hrs of our top ten survey so if anybody else feels like posting me their favourite ten Yello tracks I will
add them to the list to create a definitive top ten. Thanks to the 24 people who have so far contributed. I will calculate the
results very soon.

Subject: Re: (yello) New Meaning
I've read in a recent newspaper article
that an audiophile is someone who instead of listening to
the music gets up every 5 minutes, goes to the sound system
and adjusts all the knobs and the buttons to insure
that the sound is as close to the original as possible.
I also read that a true audiophile ( The most obsessed one )
doesn't even use CD's. They say it makes the sound too
"mechanical" and use something called "Heavy Vinyl" -
it looks just like the regular Vinyl but it is up to
4 times as heavy - and provides much better sound
quality.
Oh and another definition to the word "audiophile":
Someone who moves the Furniture AROUND the sound system
to ensure that the sound doesn't distort or change.
Yuri.

It's been interresting to follow this thread, and I feel like joining the
discussion.
I guess the general thing about audiophiles is that they say they want the
best equipment, with the intention to get more from the music they hear.
But a thing that often shines through is their obesseion of the technique,
not the music. -Ask an audiophile what he (they're mostly male) thinks
about a certain song, and he gives you a long story about the equipment,
and finishes off with a short remark on the song.
I think most audiophiles should be labelled technophiles instead. For
example, a true audiophile would never fall for MD (ATRAC) or DVD (MPEG)
(or MP3 for that matter) since a certain percentage of the data has been
removed to get a better compression. Nevertheless most 'audiophiles' speaks
very highly about those new standards.
For me an audiophile is a true fan of a group which makes 'quality'
recordings. Like Yello, Boris' perfectionsim sounds very clear, even on my
cheap audio equipment, and that's part of why I like Yello so much.

Fred's Dictionary defines audiophiles as : stereo types
Enough on that please.
BTW: the additional 3 survey questions posted were those I'd like to see-
not to be mistaken for actual questions; how many pieces to your Yello
collection to clrify that BTW2: "what's your sign?" is referring to
astrological
sign, in which case there would be 12 correct answers ("audiophile" not one
of them-ooh, sorry)
Any future snappy retorts regarding astrology should be directed to me and not
the list.
Best, Fred

There have been a few postings recently about 'Si Senor the Hairy
Grill'.
I have two questions:
1. What, if anything, is the title meant to mean??!
2. Does anyone else note a close resemblance to the work of seminal
1970s British heavy metal band Deep Purple (especially the organ and
screaming)? Is the song meant as a tribute to/parody of Purple?
If nothing else, these might be interesting questions for Jonas to ask
Boris if he sees him again!
Cheers,
Chris

Thanks. I don't want that the very new songs are illegally available, but
I think it is okay if some rarities are illegally available among the
fans only.
I have four songs available at "ftp://ftp.funet.fi/pub/culture/music/western/
Yello/songs/". This place is mentioned at Yello homebase as "Yello FTP site"
or such. Below is the README file --- look at discographies of Lazlo and
Jonas for more.
gluehead.mp3
- ------------
According to Jonas's discography, this is "Gluehead 2:37 [last 8 seconds
missing]" but it also could be "I.T. Splash 2:37" as in Lazlo's discography.
However, lyrics in the song has "Splash". I would trust in Jonas and his
sources anyway.
ily.mp3
- -------
This is "I Love You 3:11", the single version (similar to video version).
rubbwest.mp3
- ------------
This is "Rubber West 3:30".
vicgames.mp3
- ------------
This is "Vicious Games (Remix) 3.11 [remix engineer Nick Launay; remix
producer Ian Tregoning]". It is similar to Vicious Remix by the same guys
even they are quite different. Both starts with Haunted House laughing.
I have better sounding copies (from different vinyls) for those "I Love You"
and "Vicious Games". *But* in the better ILY the "I Love You" lyrics is
missing at the beginning where there is no music on the background.
Shall I upload them?
Jonas, have you noticed this minor difference? The songs otherwise are
exactly the same. Must be some editing problem when those different vinyls
were released.

Sorry Beekie,
but the real audiophiles don't have a CD player only Vinyl ( Notthingham
Acoustic Hyperspace with the Wilson Benisch ACT 2 and Ortofon Vero )

An interview may help to answer those questions:
Seconds Out
By Paul Mathur
Melody Maker, June 1987
"... You mean something like "Si Senor, The Hairy Grill"? "That one was
inspired by 'Spinal Tap', my favourite film ever. A hairy grill seemed to
be exactly the sort of thing they'd want. One DJ in Germany played it but
misread the title
and called it 'Si Senor, The Hairy Girl'. I don't know what he thought it
was about. Come to think of it, that's an even better title."

Subject: (yello) Top Ten Survey Results.
Here`s the Top Ten favourite Yello tracks - as voted for by 27 people on this mailing list.
(All mixes and remixes are counted as one song here).
1st - Tied Up - 46pts
2nd - Sweet Thunder - 41pts
2= - Pinball Cha Cha - 41pts
4th - The Race - 37pts
5th - Haunted House - 35pts

5= - Jungle Bill - 35pts
8th - Night Train - 34pts
8= - On Track - 34pts
10th - Live At The Roxy - 29pts
So `Tied Up` makes it as the overall favourite, even though only one person, Eric Schader, voted it as his outright no.1.
Perhaps `Tied Up` won because of all those remixes it has, which may suit many different tastes?
No-one voted `Pinball Cha Cha` or `Sweet Thunder` as their no. 1 but they were mentioned high up on seven or eight peoples` lists.
Nigel Allen and Oleg Yanshin voted `The Race` as their favourite track and it racked up a few points with other people as well.
Julzmon and Dan Mastous rated the infamous `Haunted House` their no.1.
`Desire` scored a large amount of 5`s and 6`s.
Daniel and Joroen Broekhuizen put `Jungle Bill` at the top of their lists.
`Night Train` scored consistantly well, as did `Live At The Roxy` (various mixes).
