I can help with a little info about this...
Perez Prado (trumpet/bandleader) is an excellent place to start. Fun, fun stuff!
Some of the most enjoyable music in the entire world. Of course, he is very
famous for the classic "Cherry Pink (and Apple Blossom White)" (aka "Cerezo
Rosa"), but it is the mambos which will really get you scooting around the floor.
"10 Grandes Exitos Para PEREZ PRADO y su Orquesta" (RCA/Bertelsmann de Mexico
#9741-2-RL) is a good introduction. Some of these recordings might date back
fifty years or more! I received this as a gift, but I believe it's fairly cheap
(around $7.00, US). It should be readily available in the United States, in the
"Latin Music" section of a good, large store.
Another good C.D. I have is "Sabroso!" (Fantasy/Original Jazz Classics #OJCCD
- -281-2) by percussionist/bandleader Mongo Santamaria. This was recorded in the
early 1960s. It isn't as "pop"-sounding as, say, Perez Prado, and may be of more
interest to jazz fans. Some of the songs here are examples of the "charanga"
style, which I've read was enormously influential on disco groups like Chic. I
couldn't notice that immediately, but this is still a very energetic and enjoyable
C.D. Santamaria has many other albums available on C.D. Check the "Jazz" section
of your music store.
Another excellent starting point is Tito Puente. And there are many others...

Subject: (yello) introduction
Hi all,
Just recently joined the list, and have been a Yello fan ever since I
first heard "Heavy Whispers" on college radio in SE Minnesota in 1984.
A couple of questions someone may know the answers to:
Why is Ernst Gamper no longer doing cover art for Yello? I always loved
his work and miss it (I think the _Zebra_ cover is pretty boring.)
On the liner notes of _One Second_ it credits "produced and engineered
by Boris Blank with the occasional presence of Dieter Meier." Why the
"occasional presence" of Dieter Meier? Was something going on with the
band at the time?
I think I had another question, but can't remember it now...
Thanks

Dieter is only allowed into the studio after Boris is finished, he only
does the vocals. On One Second Dieter actually participated by
helping out with the samples that Boris needed - mainly the practical
work like throwing a snowball against a wall. No complicated things.

No, they're not joking. As we all know, Boris does the studio work,
and then he "truly invites" Dieter into the studio to do the lyrics and
vocals, usually in a week or two. That's how they work. Obviously
during the recording of One Second, Dieter was "occasionally present"
during the producing and engineering process, but I doubt that he did
more than giving his point of view. Boris does the "knob work".

Count Fontclaire asked the "genre question" to which jcastle@eden.com
responded with source information about Perez Prado, Tito Puente and Mongo
Santamaria. I'd like to add to this.
Boris may indeed have been influenced by these standards but a few
others
worthy of noting here are August Darnell and Coati Mundi. They too no doubt
were influenced by the aforementioned masters but throughout their recording
careers have managed to build collages based on fusing sounds of Afro-Cuban,
Salsa, Mambo and other latin standards with modern dance (disco at times) to
arrive at their own unique signature.
Together they basically *are* Kid Creole & the Coconuts and Dr.
Buzzards Original Savannah Band. Their reach goes well beyond that in having
penned the disco standard "There But For The Grace of God (Go I)" and
providing the orchestration for Christina's cover of the Beatles "Drive My
Car." (this rendition seems to have a loose tie to "I Love You"??) Their
"moment in the sun" may have been an on stage appearance in the movie
"Against All Odds" (club scene).
I would suggest the SIRE releases of the mid '80's for starters.
While at the podium, I think it is woth mentioning here that the
creators of Ace Ventura-Pet Detective missed a golden opportunity to use
Yello's music in the Cuban Pete sequence.

Most folks might find it a little easier to track down Prez's US compilation
CD "Mondo Mambo! The Best Of Perez Prado And His Orchestra" (Rhino R2-71889).
Those of you in Europe have quite a few more Prado reissues to choose from, so
take advantage of it!

(jcastle@eden.com) gave direction to the "source" of some of this music that
was sought.
I feel it is also important to point out some artists that were
influenced by these classics and may have helped fuel Boris' fire as well.
August Darnell and Coati Mundi
for the most part *are* Kid Creole & the Coconuts and Dr. Buzzards Original
Savannah Band. Thoughout their individual and collective recording careers
they have melded together Afro-Cuban, Mambo, Salsa and modern dance pop
(disco at times).
That "sound" can also be heard in some of their productions and/or
songs they've penned. Machine did "There But For The Grace of God (Go I)" and
Christina sang the Beatles "Drive My Car" in a M.Monroesque style with the
guys providing the orchestration-classic. (appeared on a ZE Records
compilation that also introduced Was(Not Was) ). Hindsight shows she would've
made a great chioce as vocalist for "Vicious Games."

At least I can say that the Multimediashow in Munich is
kind if pre-viewing the Yello album Pocket Universe in
their multimedia way, and, most importantly, the new

Hi again !
Well, You are right my homepage is
http://unet.univie.ac.at/~a9103394
I used the long break in the winter holidays to
clean my homepage up:
So will only get the Yello pages, because I
had not enough time to finish the others.
(Yes, I have also other things to do...studying...girlfriend...work...)
I added the Yello-news. Where I will update all
the info I get from my record store, friends
and also from this Yello list - Hope this is no problem for you.
You will find most of the words of yellosongs
(including the Arab Quad El Habib, Beyond Mirrors
in English and German)
I tried to make soundfiles of On Track and Beyond Mirrors,
but I failed to convert them from Mac to WAVE data.
Hope somebody has an idea how to solve this problem.
The discography in my site is not complete, but I
can say that I own most of the vinyl's you see.
So it is primarily to show my collection to others.
I am planning to add links with pictures and text
to most of the files.
Jonas and Lazlo have a different opinion about disccogs,
but I think we live in the age of multimedia, and
the internet is the right media to publish such things
with picture and sounds links. A standard discography
is a thing you can send via e-mail or by fax.
Yes and the last thing I want to say is:
I've got a second ON TRACK box.
Somebody interested.
Yours

I definitely would agree with ya. I don't know how well Jim would have
sounded with a Yello "twang", but it would have been interesting.

Nothing happened so far, except for big plans. :-)
Now it's retitled Once upon a Dream, by the way.
It's basically a finished film and also a finished

"Pocket Universe", the brand-new album of the Swiss music group YELLO,
began on 06 December 1996 as a multi-media musical show in the
Planetarium of the Technical Forum. Similar to (? anllich) this
premiere, the cuts of the new CD "Pocket Universe" by YELLO were
presented, which will be offered worldwide first in February 1997. So
visitors to the Planetarium already have the opportunity to hear and see
the multi-media musical extravaganza by Dieter Meier and Boris Blank.
The show was assembled from an idea by Dieter Meier, where "Pocket
Universe", the pocket universe of the (Klnge, no idea) on the
Planetarium, the Pocket Universe of Lights, was found. Dieter Meier
about the YELLO project in the Technical Forum: "In the Planetarium,
the place-charm (no colloquial translation I can think of) of YELLO
found its true home and is, after years of desperate search from towns

lights. In its dome is condensed the illusion of the Universe, which
men call God and a child at the same time, will be astonished at the
endless and lost (or left -- lt ?) between (betren) moving points of

The stylized Kobold found on the CD jacket (? Hlle) of "Pocket Universe"

(Translator's note: That last paragraph doesn't mean a great deal to
me; maybe it will make more sense to those familiar with the group's
work.)

To subscribe to yello Digest, send the command:
subscribe yello-digest
in the body of a message to "majordomo@xmission.com". If you want to
subscribe something other than the account the mail is coming from, such
as a local redistribution list, then append that address to the
"subscribe" command; for example, to subscribe "local-yello":
subscribe yello-digest local-yello@your.domain.net
A non-digest (direct mail) version of this list is also available; to
subscribe to that instead, replace all instances of "yello-digest"
in the commands above with "yello".
Back issues are available for anonymous FTP from ftp.xmission.com, in
pub/lists/yello/archive. These are organized by date.
