What are the chances of us losing Corey Hirsch to a call up or another =
trade by the Predators ? Will we be in the same boat again as with the =
Rich Parent situation? =20

Good to know. :)

Thank you for your comments Ian.
I liked Rob Bonneau. He was a good player but we have guys who are
better (Skalde, Park). We needed a goaltender. Everyone needs to
remember this is a business. You can't get something for nothing. Who
would you've rather traded?
Personally, I am jumping up and down that we have Archie. He was one
of my favorite players last year. He's a smart player, he's a great
special teams guy, he doesn't draw a lot of penalties, and he creates
scoring opportunities. If I had to choose between him and Bonneau,
Archie'd get my vote.
I also liked what I heard from Corey Hirsch in the interview on Sunday
and from Ian's play-by-play. He's a keeper and he's with us for the
season.
Trades happen. We all have our fan faves and it sucks when they leave
but it's all part of the business.
Now, another question for Ian - what do you think about the 2-ref
system in the IHL?
>>> IFurness@e-center-wvc.com 02/07/2000 9:29:28 AM >>>
Lets everyone sit back, take a deep breath, and relax for a moment
this
morning....ok, once again, count to ten, take one more deep breath, sit
up
straight and listen!
As Matthew said rather succinctly, the deal with Milwaukee/Nashville
WAS NOT A
THREE FOR ONE DEAL!
First, Stewart Malgunas' NHL rights were traded by Washington to
Nashville in
exchange for a conditional draft pick. Bob was not going to prevent
Stew from
signing an NHL deal, although he could have due to the IHL contract he
had
signed. Nashville was willing to make a deal where Utah got Hirsch for
the
rights to Rob Bonneau and Malgunas going to Milwaukee. This was fouled
up by the
claiming of Malgunas by Calgary. It ended up being a deal to loan
Bonneau to
Milwaukee in exchange Nashville ended up loaning Corey Hirsch to Utah.
Malgunas
was going to be gone anyway to the NHL, a risk that everyone knew
existed since
he was signed in October.
So.....what ends up happening is the Grizzlies receive a player that
was the
IHL Goalie of the Month in December, was on the NHL All-Rookie Team,
won a
Memorial Cup and was named the outstanding goalie in that Tournament
beating out
two other guys by the name of Osgood and Hodson, and he led Canada to a
silver
medal in the 94 Olympics. He also has four career shutouts in the NHL
(three
more than Rich Parent).
In exchange for the above mentioned goaltender, ALL the Grizzlies give
up a
young player who has scored 11 goals in 37 games played.
Now, with all due respect to Rob Bonneau, when you can acquire a
goaltender
like Corey Hirsch, who many would argue is better than Rich Parent, in
exchange
for a third or fourth line center, that not only isn't a bad deal, it
is a GREAT
DEAL!
This team needed a goaltender. Again, with all due respect to Ian
Gordon and
Mike Buzak, the Grizzlies had given up 3.22 goals per game and Buzak
and Gordon
had a combined save percentage of .884 since the departure of Parent.
Are those
numbers that will win a title?
In addition, the team was able to sign Dave Archibald. Now while that
may not
cause you to jump up and down, consider that Rob Bonneau was on pace
for just 20
goals this season. Archie scored 23 last year, and is a better penalty
killer,
faceoff man, and is a player who will be on the ice when the game is on
the line
in the final minutes.
Hopefully most of you heard the comments from Bob during the first
intermission
yesterday explaining his moves, and more importantly the comments from
Hirsch
about how excited he is to come here. Three days ago this Grizzlies
team was
just another IHL club hoping to scrape through a few rounds of the
Playoffs.
Now, as was proven yesterday before 12,000 in Chicago, against a Wolves
team
that is the best money can buy (Ferraro, Maltais, Larouche, Marinucci,
et al.)
this Grizzlies team is one that the rest of the IHL will once again
fear and
look at as one of the favorites, if not theeeee favorite to play into
June!
That is all for now. Thank you and goodbye,
Ian

Speaking of Salo....Did anyone watch the NHL all-star game yesterday? Salo
played the second period and in my opinion was THE star of the game. He was
making some great saves. It brought back a lot of memories.

*Surprise* I pretty much agree with you Frank S. It's nice to have your
colorful opinions back.

Like that family secret no one likes to talk about...I
am back. I have managed to hold my tongue for much of
the season....but this is just too much...
" I'm sure I'm going to get chastised and chewed out
for this but I have to speak my piece."
Piece of what? (the word you are looking for is peace)
Damn straight you are going to get chewed out here...
"Just found out off the wire that among other things
we have loaned Rob Bonneau to the Milwaukee Admirals."
Hey genius, what are the "other things"? COREY
HIRSCH!!!!!!!! Are you kidding me? You are bitching
about getting Corey Hirsch for Bonneau?? Bob should be
arrested for larceny after pulling this deal off. I
like Rob as much as the next fan, BUT COME ON!! Corey
Hirsch is a better goalie than Richie is, in my
opinon. Hirsch has won a Memorial Cup, was on the NHL
All-Rookie Team, was the AHL Rookie of the Year, was
the goaltender for Canada in the 1994 Olympics. Who
was the goaltender for the gold winning team? TOMMY
SALO. Everybody in this town still has a jones for
that guy. Hirsch is just as good. (Remember Sweden won
that game in shootout)
" Are we that strong of a team and that far up in the
standings that we don't need someone with the
speed, desire and just sheer raw talent as a Rob
Bonneau."
I read the press release on the team website, I
listened to Bob yesterday during the game...when did
he ever say that. He said to get something, you had to
give up something...and Milwaukee wanted Bonneau. What
would you rather have.. a young speedy forward and
Gordon/Buzak who gave up 28 goals in eight games...or
Dave Archibald and Corey Hirsch, who won that game
yesterday...hhmmmmm....easy choice
"I know the philosophy behind trying to get older
more experienced veterans, but as everyone surly
remembers the past two years we have done
this exact same strategy and all we have ended up with
is our older more experienced veterans watching the
playoffs from their easy chairs."
Two years? The Grizz have made the playoffs every
season except last year. Two years ago, they had 102
points, but got upset in the first round...but I guess
why you wouldn't want that team...they only had Kip
Miller, Chris Taylor, Pavlikosky, Orzagh...yeah they
were all old guys....
"I'm sorry coach, I think you have pulled a major
blunder on this one. In this fans meager opinion you
are upsetting the delicate balance between experienced
veterans and youthful enthusiasm."
Well I guess that is why Bob is the Coach of the team
with the best winning percentage in the Western
Conference, is only three points out of first (with 7
games in hand), was the coach of the All-Star team,
and has to be the front runner for the GM of the Year,
and you are ....oh can you supersize that for me C.
Champ...and make that a Sprite...and yes, thanks...fry
sauce. Let's leave the professional decisions to the
(oh my ) professionals
"Hope we can hang on,"
Just do us a favor...when Corey Hirsch is lofting the
Turner Cup high above his head in June...just remember
