I find it hard to believe that having two deaf, dumb and blind guys out
there is going to be better than having only one. It's not like the current
single referee doesn't see the infractions, it's more like they are just
guessing that it's time to make a call or not. Sometimes they seem to have a
quota that once it's filled they can stop calling anything. More often than
not when they DO make a call it is something off the wall that nobody else
saw. Having two of these guys out there would only complicate the
incompetence. If, however, the IHL had some competent officials to begin
with, the two ref system might work.

I'm sure I'm going to get chastised and chewed out for this but I have
to speak my piece. Just found out off the wire that among other things we
have loaned Rob Bonneau to the Milwaukee Admirals. Are we that strong of a
team and that far up in the standings that we don't need someone with the
speed, desire and just sheer raw talent as a Rob Bonneau.
I know the philosophy behind trying to get older more experienced
veterans, but as everyone surly remembers the past two years we have done
this exact same strategy and all we have ended up with is our older more
experienced veterans watching the playoffs from their easy chairs.
I'm sorry coach, I think you have pulled a major blunder on this one. In
this fans meager opinion you are upsetting the delicate balance between
experienced veterans and youthful enthusiasm.
Hope we can hang on,

I can see were you are coming from. Because I to, was very excited this year
to hear that Rob was coming back. But I think we are in more of a need for a
goaltender to replace Rich then we are for a centerman. If you remember Joe
Fredrick and Rob switch of as to who is going to get scratched. Joe is fast
enough to play full time. But I like this move. I think that Mike just
needed time to know our team and understand them.
P.S. why must pretty much all home games be on TV why not show the ones we
can't go to.

Predators lose defenseman Malgunas
By Jeff Legwold / Sports Writer
The Tennessean
TORONTO -- Well, it was a good idea at the time.
The Predators lost defenseman Stewart Malgunas yesterday -- just two days
after trading for him -- when the Calgary Flames claimed him off waivers.
In what is usually a clerical move that goes without a hitch, Malgunas had to
clear waivers before the Predators could send him to their International
Hockey League affiliate in Milwaukee.
But Calgary, which is trying to hold off the Predators in the race for a
Western Conference playoff spot, claimed the 29-year-old, so he is now headed
to the Flames. Poile had acquired Malgunas Thursday by trading a conditional
pick in the 2001 entry draft to the Washington Capitals.
However, since the Flames claimed Malgunas, the Capitals don't get the
Predators' conditional pick now.
"We'll have to look at what else we can do," Poile said. "In the end,
Washington doesn't get anything for its player."
Malgunas has played 125 NHL games over six seasons in his career and had
previously played for Predators Coach Barry Trotz with the Portland Pirates
in the American Hockey League.

It seems the only parties that didn't get bent over in this deal are the
Flames and Malgunas. As near as I can tell, the net result for the Grizzlies
is giving up Malgunas, Buzak, and Bonneau to receive Corey Hirsch. I do
believe that Hirsch is a much better goalie than Buzak, but I'm sure this is
not the way Bob would have preferred to acquire him.

Way to go Grizz! 5-3 over Chicago.
What an effort the Grizz put out. It was great to hear Vukota take the puck
end to end after a pass from Hirsch and score. Hirsch had an outstanding
game with at least 32 saves in addition to the assist. Plus there were
several Grizzlies with multiple points. Sounded like a well played game,
keep it up!

THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE
There is a point during the hockey season, usually just after the
all star
game, when teams hit a wall. A time when players realize they have
only
played half of an 82-game season.
Players on some teams high in the standings, believing they have
already secured a spot in the playoffs, start conserving themselves.
Rookies are not used to playing so many games and veterans start to
feel
that nagging injury all the more.
Coaches call it the midseason hump, and many believe the only way
to
get over it is by stocking a team with veterans who realize the
importance
of every point earned in the standings.
Before Friday, the Utah Grizzlies had won just once in the six
games
since the all-star break. Mick Vukota, in his 13th professional
season, is
exactly the kind of player who can pull a team over the hump and out
of a
slump.
The all-time penalty-minutes leader for the Grizzlies and the New
York
Islandersof the NHL is a major reason why Utah broke the lull with a
5-3
win in Chicago on Sunday and a 4-3 victory over Grand Rapids at home
Friday.
"I told Mick after Friday's game that it was his best of the
season,"
Utah Coach Bob Bourne said. "I have to tell him that again."
Vukota had a goal and two assists against the Wolves Sunday. Other
unlikely contributors included Neil Brady and newly acquired goalie
Corey Hirsch. In his first game with Utah, Hirsch earned an assist on
Vukota's game-clinching goal with less than three minutes left in the
game.
The Grizzlies (27-13-7) put some distance between themselves and
the Wolves in the Western Conference standings with the win. Utah is
in
second, five points ahead of third-place Chicago. More important, the
Grizzlies are four points behind Manitoba and have played eight games
less than the Moose.
Hirsch made an impressive 32 saves in his Grizzlies debut, showing
up
the best goalie in the IHL. Utah made Chicago's Andrei Trefilov look
normal, beating him five times on 20 shots.
Bourne told Hirsch he would be getting the majority of starts when
he
joined the team from Milwaukee on Saturday. It is something Hirsch has
been looking forward to. As a player assigned to the Admirals by the
Nashville Predators of the NHL, Hirsch had been splitting net time
with
Chris Mason.
"I knew that is why the Grizzlies wanted me, and that is why I
tried to
get them to send me here," Hirsch said. "I'm looking forward to
playing
the bulk of the games. This team has a good shot at the championship."
Bourne called Hirsch's 32-save performance "unbelievable. Without
Corey, we probably would not have won."
Grizzlies fans may get their first look at Hirsch Wednesday when
the
defending Turner Cup champion Houston Aeros visit the E Center.

THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE
While losing one player belonging to a National Hockey League team, Utah
Grizzlies Coach Bob Bourne grabbed another.
The multiple transactions sent goalie Corey Hirsch to Utah from
Nashville
of the NHL.
The Grizzlies lost defenseman Stewart Malgunas on Thursday when
Nashville
acquired his rights from the Washington Capitals. Malgunas had been playing
in Utah during a contract dispute with the Capitals.
While talking with Predators General Manager David Poile about Malgunas,
Bourne expressed displeasure about losing his second player in a month to an
NHL move. He also pointed out that the Predators should not plan to send
Malgunas to Milwaukee, their affiliate in the International Hockey League.
A clause in Malgunas' contract stipulates that if he is sent to the
minor
leagues, it has to be to the Grizzlies. Poile asked what Bourne wanted for
waiving that clause.
Bourne wanted a goalie to replace Rich Parent, whom the Grizzlies had
lost to an NHL trade. After a couple of games with Tampa Bay, Parent was
assigned by the Lightning to last-place Detroit of the IHL.
Poile agreed to help by loaning Hirsch to Utah. The Grizzlies then

Milwaukee.
Nashville actually lost Malgunas when the Calgary Flames claimed him
during the 48-hour waiver period. If the Flames want to send the defenseman
down before he spends 30 days with the team, he must clear waivers again.
The
Predators probably would then pick him up again.
Hirsch is tied for eighth among IHL goalies with a 2.69 goals-against
average. He has a 9-8-1 record and a .891 save percentage with Milwaukee
while splitting starts with Chris Mason, another Nashville-property player.
Hirsch has played in 105 NHL games, primarily with the Vancouver
Canucks.
He was named to the NHL all-rookie team in 1996 after posting 17 wins and a
2.93 goals-against average with the Canucks.
He was named the IHL's goalie of the month in December with a 5-1
record,
1.67 goals-against average and a .945 save percentage.
Part of the agreement between the Grizzlies and Nashville is that Hirsch
cannot be sent to another minor-league team. Hirsch may play this afternoon
when the Grizzlies visit Chicago.

Subject: [UG] Explanation
Lets everyone sit back, take a deep breath, and relax for a moment this
morning....ok, once again, count to ten, take one more deep breath, sit up
straight and listen!
As Matthew said rather succinctly, the deal with Milwaukee/Nashville WAS NOT A
THREE FOR ONE DEAL!
First, Stewart Malgunas' NHL rights were traded by Washington to Nashville in
exchange for a conditional draft pick. Bob was not going to prevent Stew from
signing an NHL deal, although he could have due to the IHL contract he had
signed. Nashville was willing to make a deal where Utah got Hirsch for the
rights to Rob Bonneau and Malgunas going to Milwaukee. This was fouled up by the
claiming of Malgunas by Calgary. It ended up being a deal to loan Bonneau to
Milwaukee in exchange Nashville ended up loaning Corey Hirsch to Utah. Malgunas
was going to be gone anyway to the NHL, a risk that everyone knew existed since
he was signed in October.
So.....what ends up happening is the Grizzlies receive a player that was the
IHL Goalie of the Month in December, was on the NHL All-Rookie Team, won a
Memorial Cup and was named the outstanding goalie in that Tournament beating out
two other guys by the name of Osgood and Hodson, and he led Canada to a silver
medal in the 94 Olympics. He also has four career shutouts in the NHL (three
more than Rich Parent).
In exchange for the above mentioned goaltender, ALL the Grizzlies give up a
young player who has scored 11 goals in 37 games played.
Now, with all due respect to Rob Bonneau, when you can acquire a goaltender
like Corey Hirsch, who many would argue is better than Rich Parent, in exchange
for a third or fourth line center, that not only isn't a bad deal, it is a GREAT
DEAL!
This team needed a goaltender. Again, with all due respect to Ian Gordon and
Mike Buzak, the Grizzlies had given up 3.22 goals per game and Buzak and Gordon
had a combined save percentage of .884 since the departure of Parent. Are those
numbers that will win a title?
In addition, the team was able to sign Dave Archibald. Now while that may not
cause you to jump up and down, consider that Rob Bonneau was on pace for just 20
goals this season. Archie scored 23 last year, and is a better penalty killer,
faceoff man, and is a player who will be on the ice when the game is on the line
in the final minutes.
Hopefully most of you heard the comments from Bob during the first intermission
yesterday explaining his moves, and more importantly the comments from Hirsch
about how excited he is to come here. Three days ago this Grizzlies team was
just another IHL club hoping to scrape through a few rounds of the Playoffs.
Now, as was proven yesterday before 12,000 in Chicago, against a Wolves team
that is the best money can buy (Ferraro, Maltais, Larouche, Marinucci, et al.)
this Grizzlies team is one that the rest of the IHL will once again fear and
look at as one of the favorites, if not theeeee favorite to play into June!
That is all for now. Thank you and goodbye,
Ian
