Greetings,
I've been running for almost 3 years with the same config and now I =
needed to change all the IP numbers.
I was able to use a combination of HARM and the console connection =
to the HiPer Arc to get the IP changed on the Arc and the IP pool =
changed but the problem I'm having is with the NMC. I changed the user =
interface information on the NMC in the TCM and clicked the Set button =
but after changing the IP on the NT box where I run TCM and the =
accounting stuff I can't ping the NMC and can't bring it up on TCM. If I =

information I put in there is still there. I haven't been able to =
console into the NMC either. Do you use the same cable that you console =
into the HiPer Arc with?
Thanks for anyhelp,

Do you mean you can't ping it or see it in TCM on the old address or
the new address? It sounds like you mean that you have changed the
IP on the NMC but it still answers to the old IP. Is that correct?
Does it still do this if you reboot the NMC (be sure to save the
NVRAM first, from the File menu in TCM).
> I haven't been able to console into the NMC either. Do you use the
> same cable that you console into the HiPer Arc with?
Yes, but the speed will be different. The speed on the NMC can
be anything from 9600 to 57600, selectable by the DIP switches
on the NMC NAC. Set switches 1 and 2 to off for 9600, on
for 57600. I recommend 57600; it works much better if you ever have
to flash the NMC over the console port :-)
It sounds like you are in the same location as the chassis,
so it would be worth pulling the NMC NAC out to check. The
DIP switches are very near the bottom front of the card, just
behind the face plate. If switches 1 and 2 aren't set to on,
switch them to on, then make a 57600 console connection.

Subject: (usr-tc) HyperArc Accounting problem...
Date: 06 Aug 2001 11:20:06 -0500
Friday evening all of my 3Com hubs developed problems with the accounting
function. First, the radius server came under so much load that it stopped
processing authentication packets at all. During the course of evaluation I
diabled accounting on each chassis and the problem went away. I then
reconfigured the accounting and reenabled, but I am not getting any
accoungint packets at the radius server, nor does the 'monitor radius'
command indicate the chassis is creating any. I'm lost. Any ideas?

I seem to have recovered the acounting function. In 3Com's infinite wisdom
you can have the primary accounting server enabled and show as enabled, but
overall accounting disabled and not shown anywhere. I still odn't know what
let loose and was hosing my radius server though.

We are now having problems with one of our chassis' getting an out-of-sync
accounting packet error. It leads me to believe there is a problem with time
configuration. How do I set the timezone and ntp correctly to effect the
correct local time?

The timezone only affects (or *should* only affect...haven't
double-checked this) the *display* of the time. NTP always talks in
UTC, so the timezone setting doesn't matter.
set ntp primary_server <ip address>
set ntp secondary_server <ip address>
enable ntp
Should sync your Arc time with your NTP servers chosen.

The odd thing is all the servers were showing the same time, local plus 5
hours (GMT). One of the machines was generating the error with the radius
server and the problem went away when I set it's time to the local value.
The other servers are still set to utc and are working correctly.

Greg,
Your used equipment is worth more than you are asking and it does not have HiPer
NMCs required for v.92.
CommWorks has rebate programs that can net you more cash if you purchase new
gear to replace what you are selling.
Note: $8200 for 5 HiPer DSPs or 120 ports is $68/port
If you purchase a Multi-Span Chassis (96 ports, Dual 130A, New ARC, 333MHz NMC
and a Multi-Span Card (96 ports) 192 ports total you can get the following
rebates.
$90 x first 96 ports in chassis bundle = $8640
$40 x second 96 ports = $3840
Total = $12,480 in rebates or $65/port @ 192 ports (The rebate/port slides as
you add additional blades to the same base unit)
Since you have 7 total HiPer DSPs for sale x 24 port = 168 ports
$90 x first 96 ports in chassis bundle = $8640
$40 x second 72 ports turned in = $2880
Total = $11,520 or $68.57/port
There is also a program for Quad Card Upgrades to HiPer @ $50 on Double Plays or
$75 per port on HiPer Starter Bundles and you can also move all the way to the
Multi-Span at the $40 on Multi-Span Blades and $90 on Multi-Span Chassis
See the web sites for rules/descriptions and forms.

I have a TotalControl 1000 with NetServer Card and some
analog Quad Modem Cards.
Is there a way to get a modem "CONNECT" string via SNMP or whatever?
It contains many useful info I'd like to log.
I will try to do it in a script which executes on Radius auth packets.

I have a TotalControl 1000 with NetServer Card, NMC and some
analog Quad Modem Cards.
A twisted-pair cable is connected to Netserver Card,
but NMC is not connected to a cable at all.
There is a MIB file
ftp://ftp.3com.com/pub/rapd/usr_nets.zip
However,
1.3.6.1.4.1.429.4.10.1.1.18
enterprises.usRobotics.common.usrCip.usrCipPortParamTable.usrCipPortParamEnt
ry.usrCipUserName
doesn't work when I try to use it on a NetServer Card's IP address :-(((
I found that on my NetServer Card there is no OIDs,
beginning with 1.3.6.1.4.1.429
Using a network scanner, I found something with another IP address:
3Com 17-Slot Chassis with PB clocking
Ther are some OIDs beginning with 1.3.6.1.4.1.429,
but 1.3.6.1.4.1.429.4.10.1.1.18 doesn't exist :-((((
What should I do to make this OID work?

Hi Folks,
We have two USR Total Control boxes being used for dial-in customers (we're
an ISP). When I do a shoe sessions on these boxes the Host/Inet/Dest column
shows the name of the dynamic IP the customer got when he/she logged in
(such as user14.jellico.com), not the actual IP address (shch as
65.207.131.14). Due to some royal screwups by our upstream provider on our
zone files, I believe that this is causing serious problems for us. Is
there ANY way to reconfigure these boxes so that this shows as IP address?
In other words, when one of these users goes to POP mail. I'ld like the
request to come from 65.207.131.14, not user14.jellico.com
Thanks,
Lisa Casey

It sounds like the issue leading to this question is a mail server issue
relating to the mail server doing reverse lookups? If this is the case,
nothing you do on your box will have an effect, the DNS issues must be
corrected. Alternately, contact the mail server admin and have him disable
lookups.

Well, this should not cause an problems at all, when you do a show session
all you are asking the Total
control is to display the sessions and its basically tranlating the IP to
the host nameServer
If you look at the name it basically resolves as
Address: 207.155.183.72#53
Name: user14.jellico.com
Address: 65.207.131.14
If you do not want to see this - the easy way is to remove the DNS server
name on the total control, it will not resolve the IP to that name -

Makes it hard to manage the chassis if the NMC isn't on the
network...but not terribly relevent to this situation I don't think.

The NETServer only supports basic MIB-II, which is about useless for
anything significant for Access Servers. The usrCip MIB is only
available in the HiPer Arc cards (and similar), not the NETServer.
Basically, you're not going to find anything under the enterprises tree
in the NETServer, so there's not a great deal of interest that you can
do with the SNMP agent in the NETServer.
>What should I do to make this OID work?
Replace your NETServer(s) with HiPer Arc(s), at great expense to
yourself, despite the fact that the NETServers never really worked as
advertised which essentially amounts to Bait and Switch on the part of
3Com.

Hey, nice to see "official" 3Com representation on the list again.
Perhaps upper management is finally seeing the light of reason? I don't

keep doors open...
Tom, since I can't email you directly at 3Com (someone needs to beat

large LART), can you give me a call, or possibly a different email

DNS doesn't quite work like that -- if you don't want the name to show up
at your POP3 server, take it out of DNS completely. This is a DNS issue,
not a Total Control issue.
But the big question is why is having a hostname there a problem at all?
The POP3 server shouldn't generally care whether the IP resolves to a
hostname or not -- unless there's something like TCP Wrappers configured
in Paranoid mode that's dropping connections when the forward and reverse
lookups don't match. (Which again isn't a Total Control issue, it's
misconfigured DNS.)

If not, which modem cards have this feature?
Russian Caller ID" and usual Caller ID work _very_ different.
"Russian Caller ID" is avialable for some USR Courier modems
as a firmware "AVC(Advanced Voice Courier)":
http://www.usrmodem.ru/download.shtml (sorry, Russian only)
but authors of this firmware say
that AVC cannot work with rackmount USR Courier modems,
for example QMC modems.

I am in the process of trying to flash my Hyper Arc from V4.2.32 to 5.0.9, I
am using the curent TCM software. When I start the flash everything goes
smoothly untill I hit 80% then I get an TFTP error, Access Violation and it
aborts.
Anyone know what this means exactly? Is there a way to get more info as to
what happened then just 'Access Violation'?

Could be that you don't have enough flash on the Arc to hold the
netserve.dmf file (I think I remember that right).
There are a couple of ways to get around it. If I remember correctly,
if you do a "save all" and a reboot, it'll compact the configuration
down somewhat or something like that. That might give you enough space
to get it onto the flash. Alternatively, if you do with with z-modem at
the console during bootup it might give you more to work with. I think
maybe the Arc may store some stuff in flash during normal operating, and
those files are not there during bootup so that gives you more to work
with.
I do remember that 5.0.9 was where they started running into issues
about people running out of flash on early arcs that had only 8 megs I
believe (you likely also only have 64 megs of regular RAM in that case).
Later ones had 16 megs of flash and 128 megs of main RAM, and didn't
have nearly as much problem with upgrades like this.

Weren't there two ways to flash up to 5.0.9? I think that if you have
the 64MB version of the hiper arc, it takes two steps to flash it. You
flash up to an intermediate version and then flash again to the full
version. It's been a while since I've done it, so I might be thinking
of a different version.

Subject: (usr-tc) Firmwares for Quad Modem Card features - please help me a little
Date: 22 Aug 2001 14:55:01 +0400
Where can I find information about features of new firmwares
for Quad Modem Cards ?
I found here
http://totalservice.3com.com
only filenames of firmwares!
TCM shows for my Quad Modems:
2 QMCs:
Modem Model v34FaxISDN
Hardware Revision 0.3.0
Supervisor Software Date 03/10/99
Supervisor Software Revision 6.0.6
other 2 QMCs:
Modem Model v34FaxISDN
Hardware Revision 0.3.0
Supervisor Software Date 03/18/98
Supervisor Software Revision 5.9.9
So I think it is now qf060006.zip(Quad Modem Double-Sided, TCS 3.5/3.6)
and qf050909.zip(Quad Modem Double-Sided, TCS 3.1/3.1.1/3) in them???
What does "TCS" mean ?
Please tell me about qf060086.zip and qr060186.zip,
which I have and am going to download to my QMCs.
Can I use it with my QMCs at all?
Which featutes do they have comparing with my old firmwares?

I too am thankful that 3Com dropped by the list. Tom, can you give us an
official position on the status of the following items:
V.92 and what else is required in the chassis like hipernmc's
What level of functionality for v.92
V.44
Due dates for both
The reason I am asking is another vendor with both already under the belt is
pushing real hard to buy this 3Com stuff from me and set me up. I'm still
trying to figure out if 3Com/Commworks is the horse to ride in this race and
I suspect others are as well. I'm not looking for special insight though
that would be nice, just the official line.

V.92 was posted for Beta last week (August 23, 2001). I have asked for some
official words to submit to this list. Anyone looking to be a part of the Beta
would need to fill out the Beta form on Total Service.
Min Requirements for V.92
HiPer DSP
HiPer ARC w/ 128MB
HiPer NMC
or
Multi-Span
New ARC or 56bit VPN ARC
333MHz NMC
Hardware Requirements for Multi-Span Blade (96-port card)
HiPer ARC w/ 128MB
HiPer NMC
Note: Max number of ports that these cards will handle is 450 ports. ( you could
add 4 multi-spans to a Total Control 1000 with 48 ports of HiPer DSP)
The new 333MHz NMC and New ARC will handle 672 ports.
More to follow.

Hi,
Is HiPer NMC actually necessary for v.92 to function?
I'm guessing that to force an upgrade to HiPer NMC that no mib support for
v.92 knobs will be in the next 486 NMC? That would be bad. I really have
no incentive other than this to upgrade my NMC cards. They work just fine
:)

Mr. Goodman,
Does 3com feel good about how they are going to distribute v.92? When others
are giving it away? and encouraging all the 3com ISPs to switch with some
nice incentives?
We have competitors that have v.92 and it didn't cost them a dime... 3com
needs to realize that we have paid handsomely for our equipment and if they
want ISP's to continue to support and stick with them they should be
considering upgrades for this stuff for free or relatively cheap. Oh and
please do not say "if you are under a support blah... blah... blah". You are
in the equipment business... we bought the equipment... not 3com's terrible
support... we do our own support and do a very good job of it I might add.
Oh and I am NOT alone on this one... 75% on this list feel the same way I
do. Some of which have done a lot in the past to help grow 3com with their
own support.
We have well over 2500 ports and we are NOT happy!
Also... we are STILL waiting on those 5 Palm Pilots we were promise 2 years
ago.
Thank you,

V.92 - we're still smarting over the bugs in the NETserver that were never
fixed. We were told to buy a contract to get them fixed, so we did. Then
we get told they'll never be fixed and to buy an ARC instead. *Buy*? We
paid for support to fix these things and get told the only way is to buy
another product? We didn't care if 3COM decided to remedy the problem by
*giving* us ARC's, but of course that didn't happen.
> We have competitors that have v.92 and it didn't cost them a dime...
My honest opinion is that 3COM don't want to be in the RAS business.
They charge like wounded bulls for support and then don't deliver what
they promise. Warranty support was nigh on impossible for us to get, and
even now that case is still pending. One warranty case was closed
recently without even consulting us, well before the problem was resolved
and now rather than refer to the previous case notes we're being forced to
go through the whole process from the start - again.
> Oh and I am NOT alone on this one... 75% on this list feel the same
> way I do.
No doubt. The only reason we recently bought more 3COM was because it was
too cheap to turn down (a fully populated HiPer chassis at half Cisco
prices). Needless to say we didn't buy it from 3COM, but from a reseller
who was stuck with it.
> We have well over 2500 ports and we are NOT happy!
A tad over 1000 ports here.

We got ours, but that was before USR was bought by 3COM. Back then local
support was good too.

Has anyone successfully set up a system with callback!
When I define a callback user locally on the HARC I get disconnected

add user "test" password "test" type network, callback
set user test phone_number "5555555"
When I try to do this on the SA server it seems to have no effect at

I have both PM3s and Cisco AS5248s that were purchased at the same time as
my TotalControl Hiper systems and that won't ever see v.92 loaded onto them.
Some of my Hiper equipment just turned 3 years old, and the fact that it's
even able to migrate to the latest standards is something I value. Now I'd
rather not have to pay for that, but after 3 years of use I don't think that
the replacement of 1 card to bring an entire chassis up to an entirely new
standard is such a terrible thing. Maybe 3Com would consider a trade-in
program for the NMC. It would cost considerably more to move all of my
ports to another vendor than it would to simply upgrade the NMC.

Check out Patton.
It was going to cost me considerably *less* to forklift upgrade to
Patton than to update cards and get support rapes^Wcontracts for the
Total Control gear to get V.92. I don't think we're going to go that
route...but for different reasons.

Hi,
I'm running ARC 4.2.32, and need to set up a very simple ospf setup for
static IP customers. The other end is a cisco router.
Doing a debug on the cisco shows me this:
OSPF: Hello from 216.223.208.3 with mismatched Stub/Transit area option
bit
OSPF: Send with youngest Key 2
OSPF: Hello from 216.223.208.3 with mismatched Stub/Transit area option

OSPF: Send with youngest Key 2
Eh?
Any ideas? Is OSPF broken or can I not make the USR a stub?

Hi,
OK, got that part fixed. No nssa on USR.
Now I'm lost on this "sendpolicy" command. I've added a full /24 that
holds static IP users, and tried a single host route for a test account.
Neither shows up in the cisco's ospf db. I don't think the USR is
advertising this...
Any ideas?

Charles,
This is from memory and was done a LONG time ago, but I think the command I
used was as follows:
add ospf sendpolicy xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/29 source local action advertise
This was for a small subnet, I don't believe I ever had to enter anything
for static IP customers, nor the fulll class C for dynamic dial-up. One
thing that that I recall was there were 3 options for the "source" only one
would work correctly. Incidentally this had to be done via the CLI, the
GUI just messed things up and wasn't very reliable.
The OSPF configuration for the HARC is a long convoluted mess and took me
several tries over the period of about a year to finally get it to function
correctly (which even today is suspect).

I have that, I'm unclear on what the difference is between source "local"
and "remote". Remote seems to connotate a route learned from a dialup
user's router, or a subnet routed to a dialup user. The docs don't
elablorate on that.

Yep, doing the cli here. I searched my own limited archives of this list
and found some notes regarding routing a subnet to a customer. In that
scenario, the arc must be an ASBR. I've made it one for good measure :)
But it's not even advertising HOST routes!
The cisco and the arc do see each other as neighbors, and their are some
routes hitting the arc FROM the cisco, but not vice-versa. Not a one.

It took me more than a year to decide to jump in and attack it. Now I
know why I waited... Hey, there's always RIP redistributed into OSPF on
the cisco ;)

We're in the same boat, and Ariel now has a neat deal where they will
convert IMT (Intermachine Trunks) to 24 line PRI's using their SS7
Switch... so our final PRI cost was less than $300 for 24 lines... the
catch, we must use Ariel RAS equipment. Big deal... it supports v.92 and
has a modem compatibility list a mile long... and the prices for the Ariel
equipment are fairly low.
Latest purchase of ports around here was _not_ 3Com. Damn! Now I have to
rewrite TCView... ArielView? ;-)

Hi,
I'm running ARC 4.2.32, and I'm seeing some odd things with OSPF and
sendpolicy matching.
For example, here's my current sendpolicy:
HiPer-1>> list osPF seNDPOLICY
OSPF Send Policies:
Source Address/Mask Action
LOCAL x.x.193.000/C Advertise
LOCAL x.x.195.000/C Do Not Advertise
LOCAL x.x.197.000/C Do Not Advertise
LOCAL x.x.199.000/C Advertise
If I put a test user in x.x.193.0/24 somewhere, the host route is
propogated to the neighbor (Cisco) fine. If I put the test user in
x.x.199.0/24, it is not. Looking at the database on the cisco, I do
not see the route at all.
If I remove all the sendpolicy's, the x.x.199.x user's host route does
propogate.
I also have the two class C's that I do NOT want advertised, and the arc
is spewing all the /32's at the cisco.
O E1 x.x.195.17/32 [110/11] via x.x.208.3, 00:04:07, Ethernet0
O E1 x.x.195.19/32 [110/11] via x.x.208.3, 01:44:01, Ethernet0
O E1 x.x.195.29/32 [110/11] via x.x.208.3, 00:31:21, Ethernet0
O E1 x.x.195.30/32 [110/11] via x.x.208.3, 00:28:10, Ethernet0
O E1 x.x.195.25/32 [110/11] via x.x.208.3, 00:00:14, Ethernet0

O E1 x.x.195.27/32 [110/11] via x.x.208.3, 00:12:11, Ethernet0
Is this functionality just broken? I've not been brave enough to enter
the world of 5.x arc code yet, and I don't want to go there unless I know
it fixes any serious OSPF issues besides the DR/BDR problem...
More ospf config info:
on cisco, the arc's area is a stub.

From their web page:
"In conjunction with all the above reasons to buy a RS2000, Ariel's recent
price reduction makes NOW the perfect time to purchase remote access
server equipment to help you start or expand your business. At just $2,376
for a 24-port, T1/PRI PCI card, you can't afford to pass on this
opportunity!"
But there's a guy here selling used DSP's for $1500 quite often... That's
only $62/port. And when you throw away your quads, you've got quite a bit
of room :)
Of course they'll probably EOL the T1 DSPs as they ramp up the DS3
cards...

I've got chassis with that much capacity on them, but not with DS3
ingress.
Support basically is non-existant from 3Com at this point, and many of
the active posters on this list over the years have left for greener RAS
pastures. Of those of us that are left, many of us are considering it
or are in the process.
You can check out archives of the list at http://usr-tc.1st.net
(maintained by Ed Taylor I believe, who also responded to you) and get a
feel for how things have gone with 3Com.

Overall, at this point, I would strongly urge you *not* to buy 3Com.

You know something ED, you have hit the nail right on the head with this
3COM stuff and upgrades and support. I agree with you on every you said

Mr. Goodman,
Does 3com feel good about how they are going to distribute v.92? When others
are giving it away? and encouraging all the 3com ISPs to switch with some
nice incentives?
Also... we are STILL waiting on those 5 Palm Pilots we were promise 2 years
ago.
Thank you,

V.92 was posted for Beta last week (August 23, 2001). I have asked for some
official words to submit to this list. Anyone looking to be a part of the
Beta
would need to fill out the Beta form on Total Service.
Min Requirements for V.92
HiPer DSP
HiPer ARC w/ 128MB
HiPer NMC
or
Multi-Span
New ARC or 56bit VPN ARC
333MHz NMC
Hardware Requirements for Multi-Span Blade (96-port card)
HiPer ARC w/ 128MB
HiPer NMC
Note: Max number of ports that these cards will handle is 450 ports. ( you
could
add 4 multi-spans to a Total Control 1000 with 48 ports of HiPer DSP)
The new 333MHz NMC and New ARC will handle 672 ports.
More to follow.

I don't really disagree with what being said here, but here we finally have
someone from 3Com offering to provide useful information. Tom isn't the
cause of the problem.

Tom has been absolutely *wonderful* to deal with over the years (we
dealt with him back before USR was purchased by 3Com), and has almost
always worked for the good of his customers...even taking battles very
strongly up the chain of command within 3Com. Unfortunately, the chain
of command for support issues ends at Al Huefner and Irfan Ali. These
people are the problem, not Tom.

received).
However, Tom is the one that posted the 'great deal'. So I felt he could
take our message back to 3com so they could stick it in their pipe. Or at
least do something for those of us who have stuck it out this long to show

Mr. Goodman;
I am still waiting for replies to my 3 emails to the management of 3Com before I
do any more business with your company. I worked for 30 years in the computer
industry before starting Dayton Internet, and I worked for and with all the BIG
companies in the industry, IBM, Burroughs, Intel, NCR, Honeywell, ADP, EDP,
Univac, Cisco, ADDS, etc etc
and I never ever saw a policy for preventing the distribution of repair software
to existing users as bad as the 3Com policy.

What is the price they are charging without the support contract? So far the
support has been pretty forward. Of course I haven't bought it yet. They
will come and install it. Then an engineer will come out and work with us

Patton is gonna upgrade the 200+ ports I got from them for $0... plus
support the units.
Needless to say the market will be FLOODED with 3COM gear when all the
ISP's leases come up (I have the first 96 of 312 leased ports coming up in
about 3 months... guess which RAS vendor will be getting a call from me to
replace the ports going back? Beuhler? Beuhler? )
There should be an anonymous web page where ISP's can post the number of
ports replacing, and with what vendor to show 3COM that the jig is up.

We're thinking about Cisco...a bit more expensive than the Patton
offering...but some really cool extra capabilities come with it.

Why anonymous? I'd be happy to let them know what the final decision is
here if they'd even just accept my email address. *shrug* Its clear
that 3Com doesn't want to hear from their customers.
Did any of you all read the 10K? Good grief! Claflin and company
should be indicted! I would think, based on the performance of 3Com as
a company, that they wouldn't be getting any bonus at all...I guess
that's what I get for having those pesky ethics.

One thing that got me to move on from 3COM is that most of the small mid
ISP's need RAS, not VoIP or wireless access etc etc etc..... but good,
reliable modem pools to feed the masses.

Sorry to interrupt your regularly scheduled 3Com bashing, but:
Anyone had any trouble getting logging of filtered packets to work? I've
got packet logging set to "all", size 80, but don't get anything logged
under ARC 5.1.99 code. This used to work fine... I know I have to be
missing something really really obvious here... but I haven't had to
touch my ARCs in so long I can't remember. (Not having to touch them is a
good thing, of course... it means they work...)

We had been an all-3Com shop up until this summer. When it came
time to add 40 PRIs of capacity to our Tokyo POP, we went
with two Cisco AS5400s and one AS5300 and have been very happy
with the level of support shown to us by both our vendor
and Cisco.
I would tend to agree with Jeff McAdams on this: don't go
3Com. If you want something cheap, get Patton (caveat:
nothing in a Patton RAS is field replaceable, so you might
want to consider keeping a hot spare around. But they,
they're cheap, so you can do that). If you want something
enterprise-level, give Cisco a look.
Cheers,
Jonathan

The 8MB Rom chip is onboard and from what I can tell is not replaceable,
the RAM can be upgraded with the following chip.
128MB EDO 168pin BUFFERED 3.3v
