If anyone has guesses as to the cause, let me know.
BACKGROUND: HiPer DSP was handling a full call load from a PRI circuit
causing approxmately 10 minutes of severely errored seconds per 24 hour
window. I should mention all the other PRIs at the POP are having local
loop problems. Card was maintained under 75 degrees.
PROBLEM: Remotely booted TC by placing DSPs in local-out, disconnecting
DSP calls, taking DSPs out of service, taking ARC out of service, issued
soft reset on NMC. The card in question did not come back up then or
after reseating the card. Reseating the card results in the "rainbow"
test pattern, then later stops with a red Run/ail light, an orange 40%
light, and the below console output with no keyboard response:
SDL2 for the PPC403
Flash image has valid CRC, Loading Image
Dignostic Power-Up Failure
Manufacturing Info -> 1AAA13M0
Mode/Env -> 1/0
Fault Code -> 0-8-25-1
Expected Data -> f01c1f28
Received Data -> e01c1f28
Text Message -> Address Equals Data Test Failure
Info Message -> Second read failed. Hard error indicated.
Reality probablely is that the card is hosed. I'm more interested in the
why. Since it is not even limping along, I'm up for any exotic ideas.

Looks like a bad rom chip? A bit in the fist byte seems to be off (e =
1110 wheres f = 1111 ).
If the diags are telling the truth.
If you have a VERY small soldering iron you might fix it.. :)

Yesterday we moved our TC chassis into our new offices. Aside from the
different scenery it's now exposed to, the only change is that our new
location is fiber fed. Today we've gotten a rash of phone calls from users
experiencing problems connecting. Usually a good cleaning of network
settings(deleting multiple adaptors, etc) takes care of it, but these are
all customers who rarely had problems up until now. We're coming off of the
same switch as before, but is there anything different in fiber feeds that
I might need to account for in my chassis setup?

Hi, we think that we have a bad modem or two in our USR chassis. How
do I go about checking for it? I am more used to PortMasters and I am
used to checking with show modem and looking at the number of calls on
each modem.
Any ideas?

I have a perl script that will run a check and list modem failure rates.
The package also contains documentation on soft-busying modems through TCM.

Hmm. Like something is fused or polerized wrong in the ROM? Since the
schematics and new ROMs are probablely kept under 3COM lock and key, not
likely to be fixed. :)

One of my DSP recently developed that problem, however issuing a Hard Reset
will bring it back to an operational state. I'm still watching to see if
there are any issues with it's operation, but haven't seen any so far.

What type of TC program are you looking for? As far TC working with Ascend
and using the same current user database, any radius server talking to the
same database should be fine.

I am looking for the radius program, along with the manager program.
On the Ascend aspect, I have been working on making the Ascend talk
correctly with the TC Radius, but I keep getting errors. I have changed
any/all parameters on the Ascend box to see if there would be any effect on
the authentication process, but either I am missing something or they just
will not work together nicely.
The Ascend does request authentication but get's an 185 Error Code back
(according to Ascend means invalid credentials from the users) but this
happens to all of the users when they are dialing into the Ascend, but when
they dial into other USR boxes they authenticate fine, so I am a bit stumped.
I have added the Ascend box into the Radius Clients area of the Security
and Accounting Database Manager with both an Ascend Radius Client and
Generic Radius Client as the description, with no favorable results.
Any ideas/thoughts?

I am not sure what manager program you are looking for. Basically to manage
TC there is not a
real good GUI, HARM is a product that Commworks make which is good, other
than that, CLI on the ARC or using TCM for the entire chassis is your only
option.

it? Is it 3com Security and Accounting radius server or is it SBR or is it
some generic radius server?

There is a lot of attributes that can be sent out when a user authenticates
from a radius server.
Some are vendor specific and some are standard radius attributes. From what
you say here, it looks like
the Ascend does not seem like one or a set of attributes that is sent out by
the radius.
One of the ways you can see what your radius sends is do a 'monitor radius'
on the TC ARC and see what the radius server sends back. If you send that
access accept packet back, I can tell you what are the attributes that
may have ascend confused.
Typically Ascends convention of VSA is kinda unique, it uses standard
numbers for VSA.

Well the problem is with the access accept packet returned by the Radius
server, unless we get a capture of
what is being sent out by the radius server, its only a guess, so do a
capture on the TC of the access accept packet and send it over.

Hi,
We just had our Cisco 3620, which handled all of our ISDN calls, go up in
smoke. I have a number of free DSP cards, so I decided I'd take our one
PRI for ISDN and plug it into one of those. The good part is that I've
got the trunk settings correct, as the telco sees everything OK, as do I.
Calls are answered.
My problem is forcing it to not answer with modem tones. All of our users
are home users dialing "DOVBS" or basically placing a data call that looks
(and most importantly is billed like) a voice call.
Anyone have any hints on making ISDN go? The trunk is good, and I can do
what I need in radius to get the routing going, it's just getting the
thing to answer ISDN...

Last Friday I posted a message to the list (it never showed up though)
about a problem we saw with the TCH.
Turns out the "Chassis Awareness" for the NMC was disabled. This happened
Thursday night at 10:00pm. I took me a while to figure out what was wrong
since everything else checked out OK.
I did have a 2nd HARC installed, but not active. I was looking at the
'show nmc settings' command and noticed that the Chassis Awareness was
disabled and remembered from my notes that it should be enabled. Issuing
the command, 'enable nmc chassis_awareness' did nothing, but once I pulled
the 2nd HARC out and issued the command again it accepted it and suddenly
the system started taking calls again.
What would cause the NMC to loose or have this setting disabled? Other
than a malicious person changing it, but the system is protected with a
good password and there was nothing in the logs to indicate that happened.

Chassis awarness is enabled by default. You would have to disable it else
its always on.
Once you enable "Chassis Awarness" it does not do anything immediately, it
waits for the next NMC
update, once that update is got, depending of if you have DSA and
Rebalancing enabled, you will have some type of changes in the arc
ownership.
Once you pull out a card from the chassis, the NMC takes notice and sends
the chassis awarness message, thus cauing the other arc to own the DSP
currently owned by the ARC that was removed.
Most likely you had the NMC chassis awarness disabled to start with.

Hi,
Just a quick follow-on... Dug through what archives of the list I could
find, but most of the info dealt with PRI card and quads.
What I've found in digging around in TCM is:
-general card settings->card level->call routing, offers up "call routing
phone" and "call routing type". I've set type to digital, but still get
modem tones when dialing. What should this be set to on a span that
should only answer ISDN calls?
-modem settings->ISDN Modem call control options->set data mode of modem,
offers "autodetect, v.120, v.110, modem or fax only, aysyncsync PPP
conv, and v.75". Any ideas on which one of these matches the typical home
user dialing in with a router @ 56K?
Again, ANY help or suggestions are appreciated!

Hi,
We just had our Cisco 3620, which handled all of our ISDN calls, go up in
smoke. I have a number of free DSP cards, so I decided I'd take our one
PRI for ISDN and plug it into one of those. The good part is that I've
got the trunk settings correct, as the telco sees everything OK, as do I.
Calls are answered.
My problem is forcing it to not answer with modem tones. All of our users
are home users dialing "DOVBS" or basically placing a data call that looks
(and most importantly is billed like) a voice call.
Anyone have any hints on making ISDN go? The trunk is good, and I can do
what I need in radius to get the routing going, it's just getting the
thing to answer ISDN...

That wasn't the case though, a while back I was emailing with Jeff McAdams
about setting up the 2nd ARC and I did a screen shot of the settings and
included that in my email, it was enabled at that time and I had not made
any configuration changes since then either.
Sounds like a glitch or something, I never did finish setting up the 2nd
ARC so I just pulled it out for now.

OK, this is probably going to sound *really* silly to all of you seasoned
USR/3Com veterans out there, but it's a question about NetServers vs. Hiper
ARC.
As I understand it, and appear to have witnessed first hand, probably one
of the wider known flaws of the NetServer's (even in the last official code
release) was the UDP lag issues, and that a HiperARC doesn't exhibit this
issue at all. I'm currently using Quad Digital Modem cards (mix of both
single and double sided), latest firmware in them, PPP in modem, and v.90
enabled, in a 45A chassis
So, I'm just verifying this before I go on a quest to find a reasonably
priced Hiper ARC. Will the Hiper ARC will work with Quads? Do I need to
have a Hiper NMC as well? Any special firmware/chassis
requirements? What's the latest firmware revision of the Hiper ARC?
I've got a few other questions as well, but I'll save those for separate
threads later!

I'm running a mixed setup, both quads and dsps in the same chassis talking
to Arcs. The only problem that doesn't go away with upgrades is that the
quad modems get "stuck" quite often. If I put them in an old Netserver
chassis, they are fine. A sof reset on the affected ports will clear
it up for a few days.
I think I've even put a DSP in my old 45A test chassis and had the
netserver see it, but that was long ago...
Perhaps someone else could lend some info about putting an ARC in the old
45A chassis. Never done that myself...

We're still running some Netservers with quad cards without issue. You can
run a Hiper arc with quads too. You don't need a Hiper nmc with that
combo. It probably will get rid of some latency but again, we don't get
complaints on our remaining ones.

Yeah, that works. We did that a few weeks ago during the transition from
Quad/Netserver to DSP/ARC. We put the modems in first to see what, if
any, connection issues arose so that we could be sure that issues were
modem conpatability and what was ARC related.
Only thing that came up was the infamous Motorola SM56.

Yes, you can run Arcs against quads, NETServers against DSPs, any of the
four card sets will go in a 45A chassis (or even in a 35A chassis if you
have any of those old power supplies left still around...same chassis as
the 45, but lower rated power supply). You don't need a HiPer NMC to do
any of this. Putting a HiPer NMC will not (I guess I should say should
not since I don't actually *have* any HiPer NMC's) affect latency of
data transfers as the NMCs are not ever involved in the actual transfer
of customer data. I'd believe it if someone said that the HiPer NMCs
will lower "latency" on SNMP queries to the box, but not the infamous
"Quake Lag" type of issue.
Oh...and on running DSPs against a NETServer, you can do it with the
later code revisions on the NETServer...they added commands that let you
set the number of ports per card, so you could set it to 24 ports on
cards 14 and 15 for example, so you could tell the NETServer about the
extra ports on the DSP cards. I don't remember the commands offhand for
this, but do remember that you had to manually configure it.

We've had two of the new Apple IBooks in here this past week and
both had the same connection problems. They may connect but then
drop shortly afterward or never authenticate. It looks like the PC-Tel

Although I'm getting most of the kinks worked out of my USR gear, I'm now
working on the second chassis, which has a dual PRI card installed.
The other chassis in this POP had a dual T1 card installed, and seems to be

So, by that I assume that you want to use it as a pure channelized T1,
not as a PRI...

Actually, it requires a different firmware on the dual-pri card, not
just a certain level. Force a flash of a channelized T1 version of the
firmware to the card and you'll be all set.
The dual-pri code won't do plain channelized T1 at all, the card is
perfectly capable of it, but the firmware needs to be swapped out with
dual-t1 code to do it.

by the HiPerARC? If so, what versions? Both Cisco and Nortel CVX claim
to support this VSA.
From the definitions I've seen, Ascend-IP-Direct is used in an Access-Accept
and tells the RAS to direct this user's packets to the provided gateway
IP. We would be using this to provide transparent content filtering
to select customers based on their RADIUS/LDAP entry.
Otherwise, is there a way to do policy routing on the ARC via RADIUS?
I've looked at filters, but they don't seem to give the ability to
redirect, only accept or reject. (I am running ARC V4.2.32).

Re-flash it with the regular T1 code on your other card, then it will work
in channelized mode.
By default, the PRI code has no support for channelized T1, so you have to give
it new code.
If you ever need to go back, you'll have to reflash it with the dp (dual PRI)
code.

Look in the manuals for Internet Equal Access...often TLA'ed to IEA.
This will do the equivalent and can be set via a VSA in RADIUS.

In a pickle here.
Telco was sending me 4 digits that I was matching under DNIS Access Codes
/ DNIS Group, for the purpose of setting up modems on the fly on alternate
access numbers. Now the telco is sending me mostly 10 digits (but
sometimes 7), and my 4 digit pattern won't match. Unless I fall back to
an undesirable telco service, they can't control the variable 7/10 digits.
Putting 10 digits in my DNIS Group fields sounds obvious, except that I
have more target numbers than Group fields (limit of 3). Really need
suffix matching.
I've been sifting extensively through the documentation, but have not
found a regex type pattern match. Anyone have leads or answers on my
dilemma?

The instructions from 3Com are shown below, but seem to be very
unspecific in a few places.
The vague part is the VPN side...here's a situation.
Remote-POP-TC-Box Remote-POP-Cisco Local-Router
Local-Content-Filter-R2000
Normal User gets IP Routes to Local To the world
Filter User Gets IP and needs to be pushed to the tunnel
IP/IP Tunnel From
10.10.10.1/255.255.255.252
10.10.10.2/255.255.255.252
So what would I need to do to get this user to be pushed thru the
tunnel? The tunnel is uni-directional.
Right now, we have a special pool of Ips for filtered customers and on
the Cisco we policy route those Ips thru the tunnel.
I would love to be able to avoid setting up a pool of Ips just for
filtered users. This sounds like a possible solution but I need some
more info.

Configuring Host-based IEA Routing
Follow these steps:
1 . Add an IP network on an Ethernet interface through which the VPN
gateway can be reached:
add ip network <name> address <ip_address> interface <interface_name>
For example, to add an IP network called Lancer with an IP address of
200.0.0.2 to the eth:1 LAN interface:
add ip network lancer address 200.0.0.2 interface eth:1
2 . Set the routing protocol for this network:
set ip network <name> routing_protocol [none | ripv1 | ripv2 | ospf]
For example, to set the routing protocol to RIPv2:
set ip network lancer routing_protocol ripv2
3 . Configure RIP to send routing information, but to not listen for
updates. Since RIPv1 and RIPv2 are configured to send routing
information by default, you only need to configure the listening action:
set ip network lancer rip_policies_update no_ripv1_receive
set ip network lancer rip_policies_update no_ripv2_receive
4 . Configure a user either locally or in the RADIUS server that
specifies the next hop gateway.
Local configuration - Create a network user. Also, use the following
command specify a next hop gateway:
set network user <username> ip next_hop_gateway <ip address>
RADIUS configuration - Configure a framed PPP user, also defining the
VPN-Neighbor (or IEA-Next-Hop-Router) attribute. (This is USR Vendor
Specific attribute which has an ID of 0x9008.The value of this attribute
is an IP Address.)

They can normally "pad" your 7 digit numbers to make it 10 - if you're

Indeed...always set a password for adm...
Also...might want to be careful with the fix there. Early versions of
Arc code (if I remember correctly) would re-add the adm account at a
reboot with a blank password! The more correct fix is to disable the
account, not delete it. I think the command to do that is just "disable
user adm". Since 4.2.x versions of code, I think, deleted adm accounts
stayed deleted though, so anything recent should be ok for you.

This is an old vulnerability. The docs note that a password should be
set, or the user deleted.
I found this snippet in a log of our original config from '99:
add user "!root" password "password" type login,manage
delete user adm
In other words, adding the old "!root" user from the old netserver days
and nuking the adm user.
If there were still searchable archives for this list, it would pop up,
but usr-tc.datasys.net just mocks us, as the owner has apparently moved to
another RAS :)

usr-tc.1st.net still seems to be actively archiving and is searchable.
I think Ed has moved on to other RAS units as well, though could be
wrong on that...but the archive and search still worked the last time I
checked it (about the time that 3Com decided to try to squelch me).

Not all in same area code. Padding isn't an option because they have me
on something called "super group", and it doesn't process the DNIS digits

A user is having a problem staying connected when she dials our pool
using her AT&T Corporate Calling Card. She gets a connection, but is
dropped after less than a minute. She is able to connect using a
*personal* AT&T Calling Card. She is also able to make a voice call
using the Corporate Card. Is it possible that corporate calls are
routed differently, perhaps through noisy lines, than personal calls?
I am at a loss on this one. She's calling from Minneapolis, MN, to
Ithaca, NY. Thanks for any clues you can send my way!

o Is there any specific maintenance that I need to do on these to quiet
them down?
o Are they near failure if they're making lots of noise?
o Can I purchase a replacement fan tray from someone on this list?

PCSDL via the console serial port (assuming a 486 based NMC)...newer
versions like the HiPer NMC and HiPer2 NMC would have their own
equivalent (I believe ZModem via the console serial port).

Is anybody successfully using a Palm III to connect to the
serial port of a TC? I can get a display from it on my
TRG Pro (Palm III compatible) with various terminal
programs, but any attempt at input gets just junk
characters that look much like a speed mismatch.
It works fine with Cisco routers, but no joy so
far on TC.
