After talking to Skybox today, I was unalbe to determine much more where
short runs are concerned then I had before.
The newgroups posting of 400 for Shatner Barret, Doohan and Kelly is not
backed up by Skybox. He feels he has never quoted specific numbers, only
approximates(not sure why exactly, but whatever) I have gotten the
impression that Doohan is a little more common then Shatner and Kelly.
(not a quote, but close). BArrett is more comon then she was last time.
Basically, people will have to decide what an auto costs. We aren't
going to be able to emphaticaly say, there is thus and so many and the
value is this.

Collect Trek cards of course. Actually, buying as many boxes as you can
find is the only way to collect the TOS series. Boxes bought early in
qualtity go for $50 each. Each bax is guarabteed at least 1 autograph. The
non-bridge commons sell for $40, the bridge commons and a couple others
sell for $75-100, and the 4 uncommons sell for $250-$500. Plus each box
has an average of 3 gold plaques, which go for $8 each. That alrwady puts
you ahead, eavn if you only get common autos (and out of 23 boxes, you get
some non-commons. I pulled 3 Shatners!) Then there is always the chance of
a Mirror card or even a V card (none for me, but I did get an I card in
Season 1). Then there are the dozens of leftover sets and lesser chase
cards. Bottiom line - the boxes are easily worth more than they cost
(which is why they all disappear immediately), so consider it an
investment.

Nope, but I can answer your question. I didn't write down the first A37
but I think it closed between $40-45. The other A37 went for $40 and the
A43 for $46. Both of these sold on 5/8.

So what is the title for Star Trek IX? We don't know. Paramount is trying to
cloak the title in secrecy and has registered several names, so we have
"narrowed" it to the following: Prime Directive, Mutiny, Revolution,
Rebellion, Betrayal, Defiance, Insurrection, or whatever else they make up.
OK, we give, tell us already!
Piller Speaks
Michael Piller spoke about Star Trek IX: The Still Unnamed, and without
revealing too much (meaning anything, we want to know), though he did let a
few things out. Trio, Riker and La Forge all have major subplots and Data is
returning to his Pinnocchio-like roots, which is good, since an android with
emotions plays a lot like everyone else.
Hold my Trailer
Our friend at Planet Riker tells us that the trailer for Star Trek IX:
Whatever the Bloody Name Is, will be delayed as Jonathan Frakes apparently was
unhappy with it. So don't expect to see it after the Truman Show. It also
means they won't be telling us the name yet either. Grrrr...
<A HREF="http://www.ozemail.com.au/~pinglis/trek9.htm">Planet Riker</A>
To boldly go where no SFX has gone before.
Star Trek IX is breaking new ground on special effects. The movie will use no
models - none, nada, zero, zip, zilch. All of the ship scenes will be
computer-generated images (CGI). This is the first time such a thing has been
done on the big screen. Even the innovative George Lucas will still rely on
some models for the Star Wars prequel. (Though Babylon 5 has used largely CGI
for some time). Read more effects news at
<A HREF="http://www.vfxhq.com/spotlight98/9805b.html">VFX HQ: May 1998</A>.
Enterprise goes Postal?
In the competition to select 15 postal stamps to represent the 60's, Star Trek
is barely holding ground. A stamp commemorating the 60's sci-fi series has
received enough votes to place in the top fifteen, but may fall out of
contention. People suprised by the lukewarm support for the Trek stamp have no
clue that e-mail has been invented.
Someone Call a Plummer
Award-winning actor Christopher Plummer will reprise his role as the
Shakespeare-spouting General Chang from Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
in the upcoming computer game Star Trek: Klingon Academy. Plummer will play
Chang as the commandant of the Klingon Defense Forces' Elite Command Academy.
The role will apparently mimic William Shatner's part in the previously
released Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Everyone knows Shakespeare is best
understood in its original Klingon.

Archive and Unsubscribe information can be found at the bottom of this
message.

Well, gang, I need some advice. I called Skybox (Collector Support Dept. at
1-800-343-6816) regarding my box problems (no autographs, damaged card, no
basic set in one box, and poor collation overall), and here's what they
told me:
1. If an autograph is missing from a box, send the flattened box and your
receipt showing proof of purchase to them, and they'll replace it quickly.
HOWEVER, I asked them whether my chances of getting a rare card were the
same as if I had gotten one in a box, and I was told that ONLY TWO
different autographs are provided by mail:
A41 Charles Macaulay (Jaris)
A54 Barbara Bouchet (Kelinda)
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think these are both "common" cards
as autographs go--probably the most common of all 32 if they had extras
signed for replacement purposes.
(It seems like they're probably getting a lot of sig card complaints; when
I called and said I had a problem with my TOS2 box, they immediately said
"didn't get an autograph?" suggesting that that's the most common TOS2
complaint.)
2. To get singles to complete the guaranteed basic sets, or to get
replacements for damaged cards, send the request to them along with the
damaged card (if applicable), and they will replace the card. This takes
several weeks, because it's done from "the warehouse" rather than from the
Collector Support Dept. directly.
3. I was told that if a box is "over 50% miscollated", they would replace
the whole box. (Apparently they have a reserve supply of boxes for this
purpose.) When I told the rep that every other pack in one box had
duplicate cards, she informed me that this qualifies for whole-box
replacement.
To get a whole replacement box, send the whole thing (box, complete
contents, receipt and all) to Skybox and they will replace it ONCE. In
other words, if you get a replacement, and it is worse than the first one,
you're stuck with it. (They did say, however, that if the replacement box
has no autograph, they would provide one of the two they have extras of.)
NOW, HERE'S MY DILEMMA:
I'm definitely going to have my miscollated box replaced. This will solve
both my damaged card and collation problems for that box, AND it will give
me a shot at getting a rarer autograph. Or maybe even 4. (Just kidding,
Lynne.)
However, I'm also considering sending BOTH boxes, due to the common
replacement autographs that they are providing. (Given the choice of buying
a box off the shelf, would you buy one that you KNOW has only one of two
common autographs, or would you buy the other one which is guaranteed of
having something AT LEAST that valuable, but maybe more so?)
What does everyone think? Should I get one replacement box and one
autograph, or should I ask for two replacement boxes?
I'd like to know what people think.
P.S. For those interested, here's the address they said to send
complaints/boxes/damaged cards to:

I am not sure if I am repeating myself but.....
A valid supposition, but from my point of view (as one who got no
autographs), it seems more likely that the phenomenon of
multiple-autograph
boxes is the result of bad distribution; if my theory is right, for
every
2-autograph box, there should be one autograph-free box out there
somewhere.
The odds of getting an autograph may very well have been 1:36 over the
entire run, but with an abundance of reports of 0, 2 (over half of
Lynne's
boxes?!!), 3, and 4 autographs per box, it makes me wonder.
I must sound like I'm really harping on this, but if TOS1 is any
indication, the autograph is about 80% of the value of the box, even if
it's one of the cheaper autographs. Given that fact, it seems like
Skybox
REALLY messed this one up, regardless of their good intentions (which I
don't question).
I asked Skybox and they said it should have worked out such that over a
case, one would find 25-26 autos...In some cases, as you said, there is
likely a poor sould robbed of autos when I get 4....
from what i am hearing one guy got a case full of nothing but BTS 99 and
109...
:SNICKER: :SNORT: heheheh...now, THERE'S a collation problem for ya!!!!

that when most people are living pay check to pay check..
it must be hard to afford such things.. most people cant afford a box..

it would be...
i know u happen to spend a lot on trek and trek cards.. and other

i really have no clue how much u spend on trek.. and related merch..

I don't think you can do more than one box. When they say they'll replace
it once I think they mean they'll only replace ONE box... Period.
I talked to them last week as I have a box that had no game cards at all
and each pack only had 8 cards in it. And I had a second box that had the
normal commons, logs, game, but there was only 3 Behind Scenes, NO
Profiles, NO Gold, NO Autograph, and out of a 20 box case there was NO
Mirror/Mirror which really pissed me off. I was told they would only do
one full box replacement per customer so I should pick which box to send in
(obviously the one with no chase in it).

Ditto, I Dont drink and i dont smoke. I work on cars. Most of the time
each box you buy is better than playing the lottery or playin the stock
market. I think it's more fun too. :-)

Slybox doesn't do their own printing..they farm it out....need to farm it out
somewhere else...;)
My husband and I rolled when hearing that one. I had gotten NONE of 99 BTS,
which is why I had investigated...imagine, if noone else had the card....he'd
have a monopoly!!!!

I think he means he has two boxes at his house, one damaged, one short an
auto...should he send both back for replacements rahter then one back and one
he would just get an auto....

Well, that answers HIS question...;)I imagine they did that cause they don't
have enough to go around....

Perhaps, but although I can understand the shortage issue, I think they
should make some attempt at appeasing a customer who not only buys boxes by
the CASE, but resells to many others. People like J!m are Skybox's bread
and butter, and they treat him like *&^%$.
As I commented to J!m off-list, it seems to me that Decipher has WAY
superior customer service--they respond to inquiries VERY quickly (Jason/Q
at Decipher answers everything I send him within about half a day), but
I've sent e-mail to Skybox on several occasions, and they never replied at
all. My and J!m's experience with returns shows that Skybox really doesn't
seem interested in us, now that they have our money.
Granted, I've never tried to return anything to Decipher, but they've never
sold me boxes of crap, either. (Any other comments on the whole Skybox vs.
Decipher in the customer service area?)
Oh well, I'll keep shelling out my money, and eventually I'll get a box
full of inserts due to thier stupidity. (And to be honest, if I did, I
probably wouldn't advertise it to the whole world, like I do when I have a
complaint! I'd probably keep my mouth shut and sell the extras on Ebay for
a fortune.) What comes around, goes around. I'll get my box of
Mirror-mirror equivalents sooner or later!

So, IOW, they can screw up the distribution all they want, then cry about
not having printed enough to correct the mistake, and we're expected to
just keep on buying into TOS III? Boy, am I glad I decided to get out of
cards after the 30th Anniversary set!

Decipher has a decidedly better product support online then Skybox, no doubt. They
are not online in any way. Pity, too.Decipher, though, has it's own problems, for
example, the sealed decks...they come 12 to a case...distributoors ordered (for
example) 24 cases and got 24 boxes instead. A MONTH later, this has not been
resolved. From what i hear, almost all distributos were affected in such a way and
yet, Decipher is not rushing anything to fill the distributors orders, so that
they can then turn around and fill MY orders.
Skybox is better then Decipher as far as the small retail customers. Skybox has a
hobby sales dept, where you can buy as little as 6 boxes of a product. This is
perfect for a lot of dealers. Prices are better then going through a sdistributor
and they have always been generous in providing me with promotional material and
promo cards for my customers. They have a credit type orgram that lets me pay cash
prices...
I purchased a case of Episode VI(a 6 box case) last month, two had NO inserts.
They replaced both, even though it was technically past the deadline and I was
grateful. I imagine they had no choice but to limit the number of boxes that could
be replaced, since they may not have held back enough boxes and you can't provide
what you haven't got, regardless of who your bread and butter is!
Skybox has made some ooop's in how they handled the allotment problem, in what
they think we as collector's can bear..Season II may have been a sell out, but
autographs' are holding the same 'value' as TOS I, which is fine, at least more
people have a chance to collect them!

Nope, you do exactly what you did, stop collecting when the things Skybox does
that are frustrating overshoadow the fun collecting is....I am not gonna say that
I am not having fun colecting cards, I still am and therefore I will not get too
terribly bent about some stuff. THey limited the product, so it stands to reason
that there WON'T be enough to remedy the situation, but Iimagine if one squaks
load enough, there can be some resolution, even if it isn't a new box.

Ok, on this line of conversation, lay it out for me, I believe Skybox
needs to develop a web presence. They have a web page, but they never
give out the info we as collectors WANT. Lordy, when the first CCG set
came out, they posted a cardlist WITHOUT rarities!!! That freaked me
out, I mean we need to know if it is common or rare!!!! As was pointed
out, Decipher had people to email who RESPONDED. Jason was available and
provided good feedback, Skybox doesn't have anything close to that.
What would you want from a net rep, what do you want in a Skybox
presence? This can't include damaged cards and lack of inserts, since
that is a customer service department and though ther are issues there
(as we have been discussing) we are looking at making a job description
here...what we as customers want.

That was quick! And they didn't give out any of the short runs as
replacements in Season 1 either. Also, the incentive auto's hobby dealers
received do not include short runs.

I don't believe it either. They flat out said in Season 1 that the
incentive auto's would not include any of the three short prints. I didn't
hear them say that for Season 2, but I'll bet it's the same. On season one
I did get a bridge crew member (Scotty I think) but that's not a short
print.

To paraphrase a line from TOY STORY, Skybox has a sad, sorry little web
page, compared to Decipher.
Amok Times blows them away. Pretty sad--when I need a card list for SKYBOX
cards, where do I go? A FAN SITE. Sheesh.

What do I want? Jason@skybox.com. Someone who will answer all questions
about rarities, card lists, upcoming releases, PROMOS PROMOS PROMOS, and
most importantly, give specific answers. (Uh, gee, how many Takei autograph
cards are there? Doohan?)

The Nine-Inch Warp Factor 4 figures have just begun to trickle into
Wal-Marts. This assortment includes, Captain Benjamin Sisko and Lt. Cmdr
Jadzia Dax from "Trials and Tribble-ations" and the long-awaited Seven
of Nine. Stay tuned as these new figures begin to show up at other
retail outlets.
Before you rush out to finance a scalper or auctioneer's next meal,
beware that Seven of Nine is the heavy-packed figure in the latest
assortment of Nine-Inch Figures. Seven of Nine is packed 3 per
case, T&T Sisko is packed 2 per case, and T&T Dax is the
under-represented figure at 1 per case.

Well, I actually thought of it before I called to find out about
autograph/box replacement, but the person on the phone was (a) not real
friendly, and (b) sounded like she was reading off a cue card, so I felt
like it would have been a hassle to get someone with the authority to make
an actual decision.

Hello,
I got 2 bits of info.
What happened to the "P" on P41. I have 3 cards that are just numbered
"41".
Also, I'm not into RPG's but here a bit of info:
Last Unicorn gets licence for Star Trek RPG.
http://www.mania.com/games/aps/aps122697.html
The First paragraph reads:
It was six months of negotiations, but Last Unicorn has just signed the
contract and handed over the check to Paramount and Simon & Schuster
that grants them the license to do a role playing game based on Star
Trek. It should also be noted that they didn't get a contract for just
one of the four major properties from the series, but all four (Classic,
Next Generation, Deep Space 9 and Voyager).
(Snip)
Looks like MORE STuff to Buy. :)

Obviously someone missed that little typo as every P41 is numbered 41. At
least I haven't seen one with a P on it out of 20+ of them.

Although I collect only Trek cards, I've been very impressed with the
Inkworks promos I've gathered up (007 Tomorrow Never Dies, Godzilla, etc.).
The best 2 things about them (IMHO), is that (1) they produce sets that are
attainable (2 or three levels of chase cards that have decent insertion
rates), and (2) they seem to have good customer service.
Given the fact that I'll never own a "Mirror Mirror" card (I've never even
seen one), much less a full set, its nice to know that at least ONE high
quality company out there knows what collectors want. Heck, if I ever get a
Mirror Mirror card, I'll probably just sell it to make a house payment,
since I have absolutely no hope whatsoever of ever having a full set.
Listen to this quote from NSU's article on Inkworks in the current issue:
"Prior to releasing 'Goldeneye', its first set ever, the company created
the "Inkworks Guarantee," which assures collectors that they will receive
at least one full basic set in every box, no duplicates in individual
packs, and no-hassle replacement of damaged products." Given my recent
problems with Skybox, that sounds pretty good.
Anyone else share my opinion that an Inkworks Trek set would be nice?
(Probably never happen, unless Skybox REALLY screws up and loses the
license.)

Release date is July..that's all they have listed right now!!
The Facts About Deep Space Nine Expansion
These 276 cards -- 100 rare, 80 uncommon and 96 common --
are completely playable
on their own (without requiring cards from other sets), yet
fully integrated into the Star
Trek Customizable Card Game. In fact, many of the new cards
work hand-in-glove with
your existing cards to offer new strategic possibilities.
Just like the premiere starters, Deep Space Nine starter
decks will contain 60 cards: 2
rares, 13 uncommons and 45 commons. And just like premiere
starters, they will be
randomized. However, thanks to an innovative sorting
process, these starter decks will
also be "playable."
Our process will ensure that almost every starter deck,
while randomly assorted, is
playable right out of the box. So what does this mean? It
means every deck, statistically
speaking, will have enough missions, outposts, ships and
personnel to build and play a
legal deck. Just the ticket for those friends of yours who
want to stick their toe in the
water before jumping in feet-first with the rest of us.
So this means you're going to end up with tons of common
missions, right? Not at all.
We've greatly reduced the occurrence of duplicate common
missions by creating
sixteen "bonus" commons to take their place in the
expansion packs and in a portion of
each starter deck. (This is why the set size was increased
from 260 to 276). From a
collecting standpoint, this means that not only do those
common missions keep from
becoming "binder fodder," but the set also includes 16
additional cards basically "for
free." In other words, you're collecting 276 cards for the
price of 260.

Thanx for the details, Jeff. Not having the cards makes it a little
tougher to know their numbers (yeah, I know, the checklists. But, then
there's no joke<G>).

What is the significance of the little silver mylar dot on the lower left

Remember the Starlog set? There was an advertizement they sent out at te
time saying for $10 you could get an uncut sheet of the holograms,
limited to 1,000. Did anyone get this and if so, do you know if it was a
sheet of the gold or silver holos?

Ahh yes. Okay. The official Title of the Star Trek IX movie is
Star Trek: Insurrection... I wonder what kind of card set they'll
make from it? *Snicker*
I think that's on topic ;)

Star Trek Customizable Card Game News
<<BACK TO
NEWSFLASH
Slogan Contest: "I Love Decipher's CCG
Because..."
You're pretty clever. Good with words, able to sum things up
in just a few of them.
Okay, let's see how you respond to this challenge. Decipher
is looking for slogans,
from players and collectors like you, that say exactly
what's so great about our
Customizable Card Games. We want you to tell us in your own
fresh words. Keep
it short and snappy.
All you have to do is send your slogan to Decipher by 8am,
Friday, July 11, 1998.
For the purposes of this contest, your slogan may tell why
you love Star Trek
CCG, Star Wars CCG, or both.
The slogans will be compiled by our marketing staff, and
selected ones will be
noted, along with our answers, in a Web article that will
publish by July 18, 1998.
Prizes will be awarded to all those that are selected for
publication on the Web,
with a special Grand Prize (we'll fill you in on the details
next week) and prizes for
runners-up. Unlike many of our contests, we're not
committing to a limited number
of prizes. As many prizes will be awarded as there are
publishable entries.
Judging is entirely subjective .
So that we can give the proper attention to every slogan
submitted, please follow
these directions.
Prepare your email as directed:
1. In the subject area, type SLOGAN. It's that simple.
2. In the mail message area, type your slogan.
3. Also in the mail message area, type your name, followed
by mailing address and
email address. All information must be complete and correct.
4. Mail your slogan entry to ccgquestions@decipher.com.
Please, only one slogan per person per household per email
address. Simply send
your best one.
All slogans submitted become property of Decipher, Inc., and
may be used or
reproduced in any fashion without further compensation to
the entrant.

Well, Skybox has had my defective box for about 10 days now, and although I
didn't expect to get a reply for at least a couple of weeks, I'm wondering
if anyone has an idea of how long it typically takes to replace them.
As anyone gotten replacement boxes from them for TOS2 yet? If so, how long
did it take?

It's beginning to sound like MI has given up on tin sets.....anyone who
is interested in trying to 'encourage' them to make more, email me for
their address. Perhaps if we all write letters saying we like their
product, where is it???? we can get them to continue the line! I will
offer a TOS III or Voyager Profiles promo (when released and as supplies
hold out) to anyone who sends them a letter and ME a SASE in exchagne
for your letters!

I sent in my box that was missing all the chase cards
(BS/Profile/Gold/Auto) as well as three empty boxes that were missing
auto's on June 4th. Both my replacement box and my three replacement
auto's came last week via UPS.
I'm more worried about the "I" card from Season 1 that I sent in the same
day. I haven't received my full Autograph set back yet.

Yep.......there were tons planned, but never came out. I suspect it was a
cause of overproduction and then poor sales, they need to be more limited in
quanity..I know I sold tons within my own little circle.CUI
