Subject: (TrekChat) Computer Diagnostics
Date: 01 Mar 2000 20:32:47 +0000
Hello
Rather than buying a ST computer programme to customise windows, I
downloaded one from the net. Unfortunately installing it is proving to be
a bit difficult. Can anyone help? What does the following mean:
- create a directory Star Trek in <drive>:\%windir\%media
In very simple terms, what do I have to do?
Thanks, Arif

Subject: (TrekChat) Phone cards
Date: 03 Mar 2000 13:06:22 -0500
Phone cards-the black sheep of the card collecting world.
With the help of a friend, I decided to define my eclectic collection of
cards this way....
If it's flat (sort of) and square (sort of) and cardboard (sort of), then
it's a card!
I took to this definition, gladly, since I tend to enjoy my oddball cards
the best! A friend of mine (hi Chip) tried to convert me to phone cards
along time ago, but I resisted. Another friend out and out NAGGED me (Hi
JMH) and I resisted. In fact, when I DID start collecting them, I was
embarrassed to admit it to him...;)
Phone cards LOOK like trading cards, except for rounded tips (gaming cards
are rounded) and they are pretty glossy (but then the UV coating on some
SkyBox cards makes them shinny!). They are a wee bit smaller then trading
cards (but as we welcome Rittenhouse Archives into the collecting family, we
gotta expand that definition anyway)
One big issue that people have with phone cards is your paying for phone
time you aren't using. (like that stopped us from buying Trek lottery
tickets :snicker:) Raise your hands if you bought a toy for the card, a
video for the card.....shall I go on...;)
One other issue is the cards have images on front, but no real text or
images on back like our trading cards do..can't argue this one too much, it
doesn't bother me though. I guess I'm just easy...;)
What's cool about phone cards?? Many of the images on phone cards are new
and unique and the colors are vivid. What I REALLY like about phone cards is
that many countries have phone cards. I have cards from Russia, Chili,
Portugal and on and on, it's a total kick. Countries can't make trading
cards easily, but they seem to be able to pull over phone cards and the hunt
for them worldwide has been a blast. For the most part, there are no inserts
to chase (a few binder only phone cards and such things)
Phone cards are really big in the UK, William Shatner has ownership (or did)
in Future Call to bring phone cards to the US, but it didn't seem to catch
on over here very well. ATT does them in conjunction with Future Call now
and has released some sets.
Check out the phone card section..consider giving some phone cards a
looksie. For a limited time (based on availability), you can email me and I
will send you a free phone card for a SASE.

I'm collecting these Star Trek Universe cards also. I found the above
website interesting and a good point of reference. However, from the info on
the website, it seems that there are a few cards which he does not have. And
probably most everyone else who has been getting these from the start
(mid-1997) is missing also. Please read on.
In early January 2000, I received a shipment of corrected cards. Atlas
Editions is replacing certain cards that contained mistakes originally.
Depending upon where you are in the delivery program, you may or may not have
received this shipment. I really don't know how there are delivering the
replacements. Anyway, among these 28 replacement cards was a ST II-The Wrath
of Khan film synopsis card. [This card *IS* listed on the above website, so
he must have received the replacement package also.] Then as I was replacing
the cards, I realized that I had never received the original three Wrath of
Khan cards. How could I replace a card if I never got it in the first place?
I noticed that in the corner where the card number is located, there was a
little sticker placed over the number printed on the card itself. I could
see the printed number underneath, and it was 5199-02-04. This made me think
that I had somehow missed receiving these three film synopsis cards, since I
had already received the -02- package of cards. So, I emailed Atlas through
their website: www.atlascs.com
I inquired about the missing cards and asked them to please send me the three
Wrath of Khan film synopsis cards, which I seem to have not received. Then,
a few weeks later, I received a package from them containing the first three
ten packs (-01-, -02- and -03-), and among the -02- group were the ST II-TWOK
film synopsis cards, *plus* two other cards which were new to me. All the
other 25 cards were the same as I already had. It seems they changed the
cards included in the -02- package to now include five different cards.
Here are the five cards I received back in 1997 from the original -02-
package:
5205-02-02 Character - Nomad
5205-02-04 Character - Minuet
5205-02-05 Culture - Vulcan Mind Meld
5205-02-06 Race - The Ferengi (TNG)
5205-02-10 Technology - Medical Tricorder
Here are the five "new" cards I just received:
5199-02-02 Crew - Lt. Ilia
5199-02-04 Film Synopsis - Star Trek II:The Wrath of Khan
5199-02-05 Film Synopsis - Star Trek II:The Wrath of Khan
5199-02-06 Film Synopsis - Star Trek II:The Wrath of Khan
5199-02-10 Character - The Borg Queen
As you can see, the numbers of the old and the new cards match up, with just
the exception of 5199 in lieu of 5205. If you only have the five "old"
cards, I know that you can get the five "new" cards. Just contact them and
inquire and they will send the new ones. But I don't know about the other
way around.
I scanned Bob's website, and it did contain the five "old" cards, but not the
five "new" cards (with the exception of that replacement Wrath of Khan card).
Just FYI: I'm current up to the -79- package of 10 cards. Somewhere along
the way, I've also received five cards numbered -0B-. I don't know when I
received these, so you may or may not be up to that point in the shipments.
I have a total of 800 cards, 10 cards from 79 packs of ten plus 5 "new" -02-
cards plus the five -0B- cards.
So, if you are missing the above "new" 5199-02-## cards, call or email Atlas
to get them sent to you.
Just trying to be helpful. 'bye

Hate to say it, but I am growing very disappointed in CyberAction. Several
weeks ago I paid for all the newer sets and then tried downloading 28 new
cards. After hours, not one card had been downloaded. Their interface stinks,
taking over your entire computer, and looking like it is working regardless of
whether you stay connected. But even when I stayed connected, I did not receive
anything. I tried again a few days later with similar results. I emailed
customer support 2 weeks ago and never received a response. I called
cross-country and got a receptionist who said both customer support people were
out that day, but she would give them my message. She said the average time to
respond to email is 10 days!! I told her it had been 2 weeks. Now it is 3 weeks
and still no response to email or phone, and one more attempt to download has
resulted in nothing.
Has anybody successfully downloaded in recent weeks? I managed to download the
original cards about a year ago, but cannot get anywhere recently.

I have had fits with their CS..well, so far I have only dealt with one
person. I had the same issue a few months ago, pitched a fit and threatened
to pull all word of them from my site and discourage people from buying
it..THAT worked..(shame on me)and I heard from them after a bit and they
added the files I needed into a downloadable directory and then I installed
'em myself. Never could figure out why it wouldn't work and when the next
batch showed up they downloaded like a charm ?! What I experienced sounds
exactly like what you experienced. I couldn't even tell (by their system)
that I wasn't downloading anything. They need more people working there,
they really do.

It Doesn't mean anything to me. Before eBay came into existence I dealt
with several hundred people. Doesn't that count for anything? If so how
do you prove it?
And another thing, I have left feedback for %99.9 of the people I have
delt with on eBay. If they all had done the same for me I,d be way over
a 500 eBay rateing by now.

Well, I must be doing something wrong. I d/l'd the player twice and
when I tried to install it, I got a message saying that it wasn't a
valid win32 application. Any ideas?

What do you think of the new feedback system on ebay?
Today I went to leave feedback for someone...it wants the item number(which
you then have to go digging for) and after typing it all up, it wouldn't let
me submit it, I guess cause I waited too long and the ID number for the item
wasn't in their database anymore.
I find it hard enough to make myself sit down and do feedback(lazy little
girl) but these extra steps is more likely to make me NOT leave any at all.

I agree; they've "over-administrated" it. I can appreciate their need
to drop items after 30 days. With over 11,000 items just in the Trek
category, their total item inventory must be beyond massive. And I
can also see why they'd think that the item number is a good thing to
include in feedback, but a missing item shouldn't prevent you from
leaving feedback. And it didn't used to do that. The only thing that
used to prevent feedback (assuming no typos) was if the person you
were referencing was no longer registered. Could this have been what
happened to you?

They are requiring the item number now? It's been an option for a long
time. I usually find it easiest when leaving feedback to go back to the
original item listing and just click on the links for leaving feedback.

Actually what I've found a worse problem is the new search system. Before
everything was on the same page. Now you have to keep swopping to all
different pages for various types of searches.

Is anyone able to explain the high value of certain ST plates. I presume
they are Hamilton. Things like Engineers Tribute etc. Is the entire
tribute series quite rare or just certain ones, and why?
My favourite plate is the orginal series 25th anniversary one with all the

I was under the impression that you can leave feedback with or without the
item number. But anyway, I find the best way is to access the page of the
item and simply click on leave feedback to seller. That way the item
number is automatically in place.

I just found out about this and thought it was really cool and fit in
perfect with someone who loves Star Trek.
If you decide to help out on this project then join the group I created
once you have signed up and let's see how much computer time we can harness
together.
Group: Star Trek Collectors and Card Geeks

------------------
You can use your home computer and the Internet to help search for
intelligent life in the universe. SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial
Intelligence) has developed SETI@Home to harness the power of hundreds of
thousands of Internet-connected personal computers. You can download a
screen saver that allows your computer to analyze data from the Arecibo
radio telescope in Puerto Rico.
There is so much data that it would take a huge supercomputer to analyze it
all. But giving little packets of data to LOTS of small computers
accomplishes the same thing.
How does it work? You just download the SETI@Home screen saver program.
When you're not working on your computer, it will get data, analyze it, and
send it back to the people working on the SETI project. When you click your
mouse or keyboard, the screen saver gets out of your way, and will continue
its analysis when you're done.
If extraterrestrial life is found using the data that your Mac or PC helped
process, you'll be listed as a co-discoverer!

Wow, ya got me beat by a ton! But then I just started. I am going to do a
little catch-up this weekend though as I currently have 4 computers working

Oh, I solved that by creating a bookmark for each type of search I
use. I also have bookmarks for the different items I want to look
for, such as "star trek prop"s and "star trek holo"s. This way, I can
look thru a short list when I don't have time to look at "star Trek",
which would take about 3 weeks<G>!! My favorite search is:
star trek -(calendar,CCG,prop,uniform,costume,chess,holo)
because I'm not interested in CCG or calendars and I search for all
the others as separate items. This way I only get about 11,000
hits<G>!!

Your name got at the bottom of that page because he is
a current member of my Star Trek Collectables page thing. While
the banners have changed (long ago) he has not updated it on his
page. He's a great guy and really knows his stuff about plates. :)

I saw that. He has almost 1/2 a year of computing time done. He must be
on a very slow machine for it to take an average of 39+ hours per unit done.
I just found out that the link I put up to the groups web page had a format

I think if we can get at least one more person to join the group, we can
have a fighting chance to overtake the top 1000 (in one of the
catagorys) sometime this year. :O
Other than the newsgroups, I,v run out of people to email.

Yea, I'm kind of disappointed that members of trektrade/trekchat didn't get
on board. Personally I don't think we are going to find anything but I
think it's kinda fun helping them out.. Especially with my unused computer
time.
With how we are going it shouldn't be long before we break the 1 year mark
in total CPU time as a group.

It shouldn't be that hard. Just download the install program and run
it. Once done it should prompt you for a username and some preferences and
then you're going. Once you've done that you can come to the group web

Star Trek TNG Dealers ONLY Goodbye Show Card
this was given out to comic book shop owners (which I was) in 1994 to say
goodbye from paramount to the cast and crew of star trek the next
generation. front of card has the trek logo and it says "all good
things..."1987-1994. back has "in may of 1994 paramount pictures will air
the last origional television episode of star trek the next generation. "All
Goof Things..." skybox imnternationl salutes the achievments of the cast and
crew of this landmark series and looks forward to the future of the star
trek universe"...what more can I say??? a SERIOUS piece of HARD to find TNG
memeorabilia...buyer pays $3.55 shipping. reserve is low.
*****
From an EBay Auctionne...first of all, I am ever so tired of $3 to ship one
card...ACK Patooey...
Secondly, the AGT card may have been given out to dealers, but it was also a
box toppers, loose in every box of Epiosde One. Buyers beware, know what
you are looking for. I dunno if some sellers intenionally mislead, or if
they truley believe what they are saying, but it pays to research!

I've been burned more than once by shipping charges that are way too high, or by
people that won't combine shipping. I've definitely learned to read the
description closely before bidding. When you have to pay more for the shipping
than the item, usually a card, it's getting ridiculous!

Me as well, I messed up on Amazon.com the other day. I DID read their
fees...$1.25 per item, I ordered 12 packs of trading cards (Pokemon for the
girls)
It was a variety of 4 packs of 3 different kinds...$3 a pack. I assumed I
would get hit with 3 fees, one for each type, but NO, it was PER PACK....My
great deal turned into only a so-so deal. Even though with the fee it was
still almost reasonable, but I canceled the order anyway, I felt I was being
taken advantage of.

I believe you can go in and edit an item if no one has bid on it yet. I
know you can at least modify the description, and I'm not talking about
adding more on.

Hubba Hubba, I like the August too.
This magazine is in excellent condition and features an article on Star
Trek's sexiest women, some of which include Chase Masterson, Julie
Newmar, Sally Kellerman, Roxann Dawson, Barbara Luna, Lee Meriwether,
Denise Crosby, Vanessa Williams, Ashley Judd, Olivia D'Abo and Jennifer
Lien.

Kewel!
Now you must tweak the machine. I was able to use 3 out of these 10
helpful hints to make your windows work better or faster.
http://www.winmag.com/library/1999/0701/fea0047.htm
To make SETI@home ScreenSaver run considerably faster choose the option
under screen saver settings "Go to blank screen in X minuets. Currently
I have mine set on 6 minutes. This way the program doesn't have to write
the graphics to screen all day or night. Nobody is going to see it any
ways when there's nobody home..

After some frustrating months, I FINALLY got my two Pewter cards from
Franklin Mint...these are some DARN nice cards and it is a shame the full
set isn't planned as before.
Interestingly, my pewter card came in a plastic holder and a nice box. My
colored pewter (the more expensive of the two) came wrapped in a piece of
torn tissue paper.....I contacted them to see if they would send me the
plastic case to keep it safe!

what you got??

I got the Enterprise-D in both colored and non-colored. I pitched a royal
fit two weeks ago, I got both versions AND a $10 off coupon, sometimes it
pays to be a witch...;)

Just thought I'd share this with the group.
At first I could not believe that she took the time to actually email me.

First of all, somebody should be fussing at HER for releasing the product
before the release day. I have on occasion gotten a product prior to the
release date, by maybe a day, but since my product gets shipped out again,
no retail customers get it and I won't list or sell before the proper date,
that's protocol in not just cards, but for movies, books, games...
Even if the distributor messed up, they shouldn't have been listed.
Having said THAT, though it's a pretty interesting email and I'm surprised
she wrote as well

Subject: (TrekChat) Updated Star Trek Universe List
Date: 31 Mar 2000 21:33:57 -0500
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
I've updated my Atlas Editions Star Trek Universe card list:
http://www.ncinter.net/~rewilson/ST/ST_Universe.html
It now includes the first 82 sets (820 cards) plus the 5 card bonus
set and the 5 cards from the "modified" initial shipment that I had
been missing (830 total).
For those of you that were unaware, those who signed up at the
beginning of the series, received one set of 30 cards with their
initial shipment. At some point, Atlas replaced 5 of those cards
with different ones. Therefore, people who started the set early
are missing the 5 new ones, while those that started later are
missing the original 5. When I learned of this, I emailed Atlas
Editions, and they sent me a new set which included the new 5 cards
(no charge).
