be readable the files would be pretty large and not sure if it is worth it

I don't think it's necessary to include all the variations since most of
the differences are minor (like logo size and copyright date.)  However,
there were two very different lists and it would probably be good to
include one of each of them and then note the minor variations on them.

I haven't looked at the copies I have, but is one variation of the
checklist more correct content-wise, accurately reflecting the card set?
If so, I would include that list and note the others.  Otherwise I would
include only the most colorful version and note the others.

So, the book is almost ready to be sent to the printers (or CD copiers,
whatever you call it) I am trying to make a decision on how many to print,
if you are interested in one, can you LMK so I can decided approx. how many
to print. for those who entered the contest, I thank you for your responses,
I ended up going with a suggestion James made (won't tell yet, but soon!)
But, the ideas were great and I enjoyed all of them!

I am getting lots of requests about the lentcular cards. It's a bit early
yet, but if anyone wants to place a preorder for them, contact me!

completely out last night, this morning it's working just fine, I think the

Not fully sure, I am calling the guy to get stats today. (packs per box,
etc) so I can let people know exaclty what they will need. Remind me to tell

Frankly, I was fascinated.  From the part of the conversation I saw, it
looks like you and Audrey (who I keep bumping into on eBay like it's goin'
out of style!) both have them.  Should the rest of us on Trek chat/Trek
trade be considering them?  I know Lynne probably can't answer that, yet,
but I'd like to hear opinions from anyone with one.

So, now I know what Lynne and Jim's place looks like, I've seen the girls
and I know they have trading cards ALL OVER THE PLACE, as well as cable. =20

Do I know too much about their lives?  NAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!<G>!

Welcome from Cable Modem Land! Can you read this or did I send it tooooo
fast...;)
Actually, I am looking for a few good beta testers. I need someone to admit
he has the slowest processor, least memory and smallest monitor. If you
think you meet any or all of those requirements, please contact me so I can
send you a copy of the CD book. I will also need a windows 3.1 volunteer. (I
already know of a MAC and Wins victims)
As soon as I get reports back from these people and tweak anything
necessary, then it's off to the printers!

OK, if you haven't got someone, I have a voice mail system behind me that
has a 486/25SX with 8meg, 14" monitor, 1meg SVGA running Windows 3.1 that I
would love to test it on.  Of course I'll also test it on my P3/450
w/128meg, 17" monitor, 4meg SVGA running Win98.

That might be me!! Windows 3.1 that I use everyday. 486-66. I also have
a 40 MHz I can use. with 32 meg ram. But I can pull that out and but in
4 meg for minimum requirements. 2 hard drives totaling 1.5 gig. with a
2x CD ROM that sometimes works. I can install my 8x CD ROM if needed.
1meg video card, And a brand new 17" monitor. Now that's ancient stuff
hu? But  I think J!m's got me beet by a few MHz.

i have a pentium 100 with 32 meg ram and im on win3.1
using aol4.0
lost two drives recently so im barely getting by on one
with no room on it..
oh..  its a 2.1 gig and im on at 28.8 now..
but i dont think my area can get cable modems yet..
i think one of my roomates asked.. but that could have
changed by now..
i do have a digital cable box and two normal cable boxes..
and i have a cable in the room i am in now. but its not connected to anything
at all   i never use it..  seems the more cables used the lower the
signal so i just use the other three...  sigh..

Boy, have you hit on my favorite pet peeve!!  What's wrong with most of the
guides already out there?  They're one person's opinion of what the stuff
should cost.

Compare the way Trek price guides have been done with the way coin price
guides were done years ago.  Today, a guy with a large collection decides
what he's willing to sell his stuf for and that's what he claims is the
value.  When they vuilt the coin price guides, they actually called and/or
wrote to coin dealers around the US and asked what they pay for a specific
coin (in various conditions from Fair to Uncirculated)and what they sell it
for.  After getting a representative sampling of responses (I don't know
how many were polleed or what percent resonded) they averaged the figures
and p[rinted both a "red book" and a "blue book" to make collectors aware
of what  they could expect to get for a coin as well as what they should
expect to pay for it.

Seems to me with the Internet now available, this process would be a lot
cheaper and somewhat faster; the toughest part would be making people aware
of the need for their responses.  You could ask people to go out in their
local areas and get prices on specific items (at retailers, conventions and
flea markets) and report back to a website with a form that collected item
name, description, condition, price and type of seller.

With a forward describing how the information was gathered and calculated,
there are an awful lot of people out there who would pay good money for
such a book.  With Trek, specifically, it might be better to dedicate
separate books for each category of collectible (or separate volumes for
each of an overall "cyclopedia" of Trek collectibles).  This would both
allow the author to focus on each area for precision as well as allowing
time to "get a life" and would also allow collectors to purchase only those
volumes they're interested in.  Personally, I'd much rather have an
extremely thorough book on, for example, Action Figures (that included
photos, prices, a detailed analysis of the definitions of MINT, FAIR, etc.
and any other related info - history, etc.) than a poorly researched,
inaccurate and incomplete volume on "collecting Trek", like the last one
that came out.  What a piece of crap that was!!

Just my 2 credits-worth.

guides are never one persons opinion...  if u read the preamble
to most of the guides out there .. u will see that they explain
how they come up with those prices...
usually from what i gather its a combination of ads found in
several places.. there are three main magazines..   also.. fan
conventions..  and stores from around the country...
then theres ebay and other online auctions.. and so on...
most say that they are tallying up the various sources for info
and coming up with what they feel is the most accurate medium.
sometimes they are right on.. sometimes a bit off..  very rarely
are they that far off tho...
its a lot like autographs.. not the kind pulled from packs of
cards mind u.. but regular signatures on 8x10s..  or whatever
they are on...   its not really an opinion..but what the market
will bear...  last i saw a shatner from tos1 is going for $510..
or is that sitting for that amount??  one never knows.. but
i saw that ad in the last issue of the wrapper if anyone cares.

My rules of thumb is usually 1/2 of any guide price is my max for an
item. These stores that get polled for prices want to get the most out
of their cards.  They are not going to give a low price. There is
definately a conflict of interest in this method. Another favorite
method is to look at ebay and take off the top and bottom 10%. That
usually works farily well, unless a card is new or does not have much
history - older cards.

Of course, but if you poll enough stores (and that's where I have a problem
with the recent Trek guides), you get a more reasonable average.  Also, I
should have mentioned that I've always found guide prices (for anything) to
be high, compared to where I live; you mileage may differ.

It could be my imagination, but eBay seems considerably lower (most of the
time) - at least for Trek items.

Absolutely, it always bothers me when a collector asks me a guide price and
I say, well, this is the cost, but then these people sell them and i think
it's to their advantage to price high, how objective can they be? How
objective would I be, I man, I sell the stuff, too!

I wonder how successful either would be, the guide person calling around
(the sheer time and cost involved) or relying on soemthing that requires
aloto f participation of others. I mean even NSU complained last issue that
their asking for adive on their guides got little if any responses.

Well, in this specific case, I am talking cards,  have pretty much quit al

What I will see if I read the preamble is what they SAY they do, that's not
the same as what they DO, Now, don't get me wrong, I like NSU, i ike the
people who work there and all, and it is the only one I subscribe to, but it
seems like alot of guides aren't as reflective of the market.

NSU has the SAME card listed twice under two different sets, on is for $7
and the eother for $30, which would you rather pay?
Cards get listed and priced when they first come out, but don't always get
adjusted to reflect changes. And what about prices for things that don't
exist?? Who told them the price for MS one binder was $20 (or whatever). I
mean, if they  DID poll several dealers or whatever then why did independent
dealers say they sold it at that price (when it isn't real??!!) Have ya seen
the Ep 2 2- card promo cards in the auctionne lately? Have you seen what
they guide for??? What about beckeett? THey had COllins listed at $20! (from
TOS one)

I am sorry to report that the ISP that hosts our server is down, reallllly =
down. Though our server is up and running it can not get hit until they =
get themselves back up. I am unsure of how long this will take. This means =
the web pages, auctionne and mail is down. No one can hit the site so the =
auctionne is down for everyone. It is possible that it will continue to =
advance and go sold and such, but we will address that when access is =
restored.

Howdy!
I see a mid-august release date for Blazes of Glory is expected.
Interesting issue with SkyBox and redemption cards. A friend sent in three
certified mail and they were lost apparently before getting to SkyBox.
Certified mail offers no insurance loss (though it cam be bought extra) and
SkyBox won't get involved either since they never received it. I assumed if
you could prove you mailed it someone had to be accountable somewhere, but
neither one is.....

Your friend is allowing the PO to walk all over him/her.  They paid an
extra fee for a Certified letter.  The implication is that greater caqre
will be taken to deliver the item to the addressee.  Your friend doesn't
need insurance, he needs to file a claim in small claims court for the
dollar value of the merchandie s/he lost, the cost of the certified letter,
curt costs and aggravation.  In PA, the limit in small claims court is
$5,000.00.  It costs $35.00 to file for a trial, which the defendant pays
if they lose.  Guess what?  The Post Office is NO LONGER a department of
the government, so are suable and they gotta hire a lawyer to represent
them; your friend has a constitutional right to represent themselves.  At a
couple of hundred dollars an hour, dontcha think the PO will probably
settle with your friend?

I quit using Certified mail years ago just because of that.  If you are
sending anything of value you should always use Insured mail.  The receiver
has to sign for it like certified but your covered in case the post office
loses it.  You can also pay the extra for return receipt but I never waste
my money on it.

OK, I admit, this note doesn't belong on Trekchat, but I wanna whine, but
consider yourself warned and if you don't contiune reading it, your life
will carry forward with no noticiable loss...;)
BUT I GOTTA VENT.

Firstly, I was annoyed at SKyBox for refusing to change the address my
shipment for TNG 7 went to. Because they wouldnt, I made the decision to
leave my vacation at 1:30 AM, pack and ship and return to my vacation (2
hours away) Cool enough, I can deal with sleep deprevation.
What shocked the heck out of me was a company called mail boxes etc. There
was no direct UPS place in the city so we went there. I shipped out 2 full
cases, one half case and one quarter case at the cost of almost $100!!!!!!!!
For comparison, I was SENT 3 cases with a 4th case sent elsewhere, but
billed to me for $42. I wonder if this place charges more cause they are a
tourist attraction, bilk the tourists???
Granted my customers won't be charged extra, I had billed according to UPS
rates, but I was truly stunned it cost that much differently.
At about the same time, we noted problems with access to the server and
mail. We now know the ISP who hosts us has had all phone service cut off for
non-payment and a peek in their office shows it to be cleaned out. Lost to
us one computer system with an 8 gig drive, a back up power supply and a
$300 'power pal' (neat toy that turns off power to one outlet when we needed
to remotely reboot the server when it got stuck) I looooved my little power
pal  :( Had James not been able to access the server right before they
pulled the plug (we were about this time realizing there was SOMETHING going
on) and download some files form the server, we would have lost the
Auctionne files the program, ATN, all my images, oooodles of stuff, most
irreplaceable, Thank goodness for that!
I understand form the cable modem place they are picking up alot of this
ISP's castoffs. ONE MORE WEEK and our new server would have been
there....and we could have avoided all of this. After a big struggle(James),
lots of tears(mine) and antacids(both), James got the server back up, though
its horribly slow, but soon, !! I keep thinking life will go on without my
little server, but it's MINE and I don't like other people messing with
it...;)
In the midst of this my Season 7 boxes didn't arrive until Monday to
distract me and now that they are here, I have to say I am considering
leaving the SkyBox bandwagon.
I have tried really hard to be supportive and encouraging and such, but of
late that seems harder. They are noncommunicative and don't respond to my
emails (I will say though their PR people remain delightful to deal with) I
have more damaged singles then usable singles, most of my holos have dings
and of what I have already opened, I dupe on the same 4 or 5 autos BIG TIME.
I think most everybody knows I had a 'better time' when Steve C was there, I
always felt I was able to get most of what I wanted to know for the webiste
from him and he was always good for a contest prize right before the
releases. But, after he left, I was ready to give the new guys a shot and
try to work through them, but I feel less sure that will happen. I like to
be able to offer news and walls annoy the heck out me (though not near as
bad as ISP who run away with my power pal)
I love card collecting and I suppose this is a momentary lull, but :harumph:
OK, I'm done now.....

1. What is everyone's opinions/thoughts on the new ST in motion set due out
in Sept? Excited, uninterested, gotta have it cause it's trek, but that's
all.....everyone likely knows I'm biased cause  like lenticulars and have
wanted sound chip cards for years now and I like the idea of working with
Steve/someone other then SkyBox. What do you guys think.
The box price is a bit intimidating. And I am curious to know what the price
of the sound chip cards will be.
2. Are there any other sci fi shows out there that would make good card
sets? seems like Sci Fi channel is doing a bunch of new ones. Me, if it
isn't trek......

Interested, Got to have it, yet unafordable. Like everything else these
days, I,d like to collect them, but i think there going to be too damn
expensive to do right now. There's not enough recovery time between
products for one person to collect everything all at once. I myself am
currently 30-35 autograph cards behind in collecting. So, It's not like
ya have to get eveything as it comes out. It's just going to take a
little longer and a bit more expensive as time goes by to obtain these
cards. Oh Well! I think the days of bein a collector are numbered. Like
J. Mark Harris, And what ever happened to Dave Meyer?

Till today i,v been scifi channel deprived. Our cable company finally
picked it up. I guess my bitching finally paid off. :)
I think a good card set would be somethin like Blakes 7, Earth 2,
Forbidden Planet, Star Trek Cartoon series?

Lynne's recent contest to suggest an idea for a movie soundchip moment got
me thinking about one of Star Trek's little mysteries.  Have I completely
imagined this or is there a rational explanation?

When I watched ST4 The Voyage Home in the cinema I remember this dialogue:

McCoy:  ...I sure wouldn't want to fill your shoes.
Spock:  Starfleet provides adequate footwear for all personnel.

But every other time I've watched the film Spock says: My shoes?

Does anyone have an explanation.  By the way, if the first one did happen
(and not just in a rapidly contracting alternative universe) then that
will be my entry for Lynne's competition.
