Has anyone seen a A19 Rick Berman autograph card.

I,m wondering if it never made it to production and that the Chase
Masterson autograph card should be numbered A19 Since the Chase
Masterson redemption card isnt actually numbered A20. There's no number
on it at all so how does one know if it's gona be numbered A20?

Got any ideas?

This is the first time I have bought a case in the hope of doing a bit of
trading.  So far all my autographs (6) have been Ferengi - Quark and Nog.
 I hope it's not the same with the rest of the case.  But the good news
was that one box had two autos in (both Quark).

Anyway just a few questions which might help me:

1.  What sort of prices will the various sub-sets be going for?

2.  Is the clear paper which sets are usually wrapped-in available at
specialist card dealers or is this just a normal thing available in
ordinary shops?

3.  Some strange Skybox redemption sets also arrived which featured the
core crew and a cast shot.  Are these cards from some previous set and
what are they worth?

Sounds like you're talking about shrink wrap.  I just recently purchased a
used shrink wrapper with a huge roll of wrap and a couple heat guns.  Wraps
up a set really nicely.

You do have to be careful opening sets wrapped this way as it's very easy
to damage a card trying to get it off.

They arrived as part of the case or something else you bought? Sounds like
the redemption set from the first DS( set..sort of embossed?

These "new" figures are the first 1999 4.5" figures, available only at
Target stores.  They are Worf and Picard in Movie uniforms.  They came out
a month or two ago and retailed for $9.99.
Due out this month is the second release of 4.5" target exclusives:
Data in Movie Uniform, and 7 of 9.  Also due out this month is the next
ToyFare magazine w/ coupon to order their exclusive 4.5" figure:

British Scanlens set? What is that? I am aware of the UK version of the 1979
Topps The Motion Picture set, but I had not heard of a UK version of the 1976
Scanlens set. I thought there was an Australian version and a New Zealand
version, which were the same except for the wrappers. (Although I have also
herad that the coloring on the backs of the cards differs very slightly between
the Australian and New Zealand cards. I have the set and some backs are
slightly
different in coloring than others, but I have never been sure whether that is
just due to some cards being more faded, or whether there is any consistent
difference between Australian and New Zealand cards.)

In any event, I have extra singles of 60 of the 72 cards - with no certainty of
which are Australian or which are New Zealand, or perhaps UK. They are for sale
for $2 per card, with better pricing for larger quantities.

I think the way it works is the New Zeland the same as the UK one, or it
gets used interchangably...so there is a UK/Regina and Allens/New Zeland
set, an Australian set and a US set.
I have never had any cards that were from the UK set, but it was my
understanding there is no difference in the two overseas one, but I can't
confirm from experience.

if i run an auction and someone wins.. i contact them since
we will both get a letter telling us to contact one another..
if i win an auction.. i expect the seller to contact me if he
wants to sell the item...  i may contact them if i get the
announcement and i havent heard from them yet... but i
will give them time to contact me...
i expect them to tell me exact address and so on for the
items if they wish to make the sale...
if they are too busy.. they obviously dont need the sale..

I think that's a lazy and lousy attitude.  They should contact me at least
once with their address.  Heck I contact people, then notify them when
payment it received, again when I ship and again to make sure they received
it if I don't hear from them.

As several of you may have noticed the Rick Berman card seems to be
EXTREMELY hard to find. I have reports of 10 cases being opened without any.
I have heard several stories from people on the reason for this. I did speak
today with Steve Dubin, who is one of the two people taking over for Steve
C. when he left. He has told me this:

Unfortunately, this card IS truly short printed.  At the last minute, Mr
Berman decided that he did not wish to sign as many cards as originally
agreed to.  There are redemption cards packed in the product.

I'm nowhere near that organized, but it would never occur to me to say,
gimmie your money, but I don't want to talk to you..

No doubt making some $$ is nice, but the contact and interaction is
important to me and I can't imagine doing that and I find myself not wanting
to bid on auctionnes with 'attitudes'

Yes, you're right, this has been confirmed by Jeff Jacob.  Other dealers
also got a few free sets of these in their cases.

In case anyone's interested I got nothing but Quarks and Nogs in my entire
case, oh! apart from one Koloth.  Bit of a disaster really.  Even worse is
that the prices for this set are extremely low, at least on eBay.  I'm not
sure if it's due to the smaller popularity of DS9 or the poorer quality of
the set.  And by the way I don't know of anyone in the UK who has opened a
box and found a single Rick Berman.

That's also the type of person who would be the first to leave negative
feedback if you failed to contact them.  I certainly wouldn't want to bid
on anything they were selling.

This is a series of excepts of an Email conversation I had over the last
week or so with Brian Bowers.  Brian is a fellow who sells on eBay and on
Lynne's auction.  I've done business with him in the past.  He recently
contacted me to see if I'd be interested in a few Trek items he wanted to
sell and here's the way the conversation went:

He said he had a set of Australian Scanlens cards but didn't know what they
were worth, so I should make an offer.  I said I, too, had no feel for
their value, so I put a posting up on TrekChat to see if anyone had the=
 info.

I got back a response from Lynne, saying they ranged from $150 to 300 for a
Mint set.

Brian then wrote me, saying he also got the same info and asked what I'd be
willing to offer.  Here's some excerpts from there on:

Not interested for a couple of reasons:

1) I won't bid against Lynne.  I've bid on eBay a couple of times against
friends and it made me uncomfortable.  This is a hobby, not a career.  I
don't need the stress.

2) I thought we had a deal and don't feel I should have to "reaquire" what
we had already agreed on.  Of course, there's nothing stopping you from
selling them elsewhere, but I already did all my homework and financial
planning in order to earn these cards, so I'm just not prepared to do
anything else.

that effect.  No reply to my question about how it was that Lynne would

pretty well and I doubt VERY MUCH that she would have tried to make him
kill a deal already in progress.

I guess wehat I'm trying to say, here, is that, in any future dealings you
might have with Brian Bowers, don't assume you bought merchandise from him
until it's in your hands.

Well, as I told Vince in a private email, I suppose I am guilty of offering a
bid on an item I knew someone else was interested in (though I didn't know
who), but I also assumed the item was still in the 'offering phase' and that it
would be ok to make a counteroffer. Obvioulsy, at some point, an item is not
still supposed to be 'on the table' and I would say at the point you two were
in your covnersations, you were right to feel the item was sold to you. I
assumed from our chat, he was looking at offers, and wanted to best possible
deal for his item, and I encouraged him to auctionne it so he could get the
most for his money, since he had expressed a need for cash.
It takes me back to one reader's suggestion that what I add to 'the book' is
trading and selling ettiqutte to encourage joy and happiness to the net
experience rather the nfrustration and hurt feelings.
I don't even want the set, I wanted it for a customer, who can easily wait for
the next set, so it was pretty unnecessary...

It sounds ike a rip-off. How can you know you made the winning bid if they
don't inform you? How can they expect everyone to send payments when only
ONE bid is the winner? Or am I reading it wrong?? I'm totally confused.
Jeez, I was going to bid on some rare KRAFTWERK records at Ebay a while
back -(as IF I have money)-. I'm glad I didn't. Good luck collecting STAR
TREK cards and stuff!

that is obvious when reading the posted items description...
as i have not seen this..
i have been looking on ebay a bit lately.. to see if such a thing
is common.. but as yet.. i havent found anyone who offers this info
that they wouldnt have the time or desire to contact the buyer.. to
let them know the specifics of sending in payment..  so im hoping
that its not as common as one would have me believe..

u know whats worse??   i bid on an item.. and havent gotten
it since i sent in payment.. but thats only about a month ago..
and ebay wont let me see the posted item to contact the seller..
and i have no way to find him.. as my mail is no longer accessable
longer ago than the 4th of may..  thankfully it was only a buck or
so..  and it was a mistake to bid on the item in the first place..
since i didnt realize what it was til after i confirmed my bid..
but atleast i honored it..  pity that i had to be ripped off and i cant
even find out by whom..

i agree that u had a deal and he should have felt bound to it.
but.. since no money had yet been sent and or traded hands..
he had the right at any time to refuse the deal. even if he had

Sounds like my 9-year old, if they haven't seen it, it isn't real? I've noticed
it twice this week and only mentioned it after the second time cause I think
it's a squirrely way to do business, though we are free to bid or not bid, so
it's our choice/

that i havent..  i dont doubt that its real..  i just mentioned that
i looked and so far i havent encountered it..   not that it doesnt
exist just cuz i havent seen it..   im sure it does exist or u wouldnt
have introduced this topic.. to the list..    im just glad so far
that i havent experience it.. thats all..

i just hope that if this was the case.. that this method would

as soon as i can afford a set of the leaf 67s.. ill consider buying
a printer and hooking it up so i can do that..
note.. there was no transaction agreement.. i won i knew i won
i sent the buck to him for a 79 cent card that was worth about
25-50 cents   a common card..  i was naive enuff to think that
the card was a chase.. since it was offered among many
other chases from the same series ..   but i did send him payment
he just chose not to send my card..  thankfully it was only a buck.

I'm sure I don't see what buying a Leaf set has to do with protecting your
transactions by keeping records? A simple black and white dot matrix printer
is hardly a big investment. And we won't mention pen and paper...I know too
barbaric to think about.
 Besides, if you don't do what you can to maintain your own
records/investmerns, you can hardly complain when it does go astray.
We'd all like perfect transactions, it's always a bummer when one bad apple
shows up.

If you have the item number, you can look it up for 30 days after the
auction's end.  If you remember the seller's ID, you can look that up on
eBay as well.  Go to the Site Map on eBay and look over all the "Buyers'
Services".  You should find something to help you.

I am familiar with this sort of thing happening in a trade situation, but I
still think it's wrong to agree to sell, then change your mind.  I mean I
THINK IT IS WRONG, not just not nice.  I mean, you seem to be saying that
if I mail him $150 on Monday and it doesn't arrive until Thursday, that he
can contact me on Wednesday, saying he's selling it elsewhere?  Or that he
wants another $50?  That can't be OK!

i dont have the info.. at all.. all i know is that it was a single card..
not even a chase card.. and it was about 4 weeks ago...
i dont even know the sellers name as i didnt expect to be blocked
from finding this info after only 4 weeks...

no it not ok.. but legally he doesnt have to sell it to u.. til he
gets his money.. in fact.. even after he gets ur money.. he can

he can return ur check to u.. or he can say sorry and make up
any excuse..   just to patronize or placate u..
he could say sorry... and say that the cards fell into some
coffee or something.. haha..   these are excuses i have gotten..

money and ur agreement is only via email and he isnt interested
in keeping ur patronage  there is no real binding contract..
and if u went to court.. the court would ask u what was ur loss
or expense in this case.. u would have to say none since u are
not out any money... and the case would be dismissed..
the guy who didnt sell u the cards is a jerk.. but theres nothing
more than u can do...  just move on.. and learn a lesson...
dont deal with him again.. and keep looking for that set..

Actually, speaking as a lawyer, once there is an offer and an acceptance, there
is a contract that is legally binding. Of course that does not necessarily mean
it is worth your time and trouble to try to enforce it, but once an offer is made
and accepted, both sides are legally obligated to follow through. At that point,
the buyer may be passing up other opportunities to buy the item and the seller
may be (is supposed to be) passing up other opportunities to sell the item. That
is the concept of detrimental reliance. If you rely on a contract to your
detriment and the other party reneges, that party is liable to make good on the
loss.

Of course, if the item is readily available elsewhere at the same price, the loss
may be meaningless. In this particular case, that may not be so. If the buyer has
to pay more to get the item elsewhere, the seller is responsible for the
difference. Of course, if the difference is $50 or $100, then a lawsuit is not
practical. But let's get past the idea that it is legally okay to make a deal and
then change your mind.

Interesting that we have heard nothing from the person who offered to sell the
item, then backed out. If he has a different version of what happened, it would
be nice to hear it. Otherwise, it would be nice if he did what he agreed to do,
even if he has to spend some money to make someone else whole.

Actually, you would be legally entitled to the replacement cost. One who does
you harm is responsible to make you whole - that means put you back where you
were.

Where do you get the notion that the original purchase price controls? Suppose I
bought a house 20 years ago for $40,000. You burn it down. It would cost
$150,000 to rebuild. You think you would only be responsible for the original
$40,000 purchase price?

The deal is finalized when there is an offer and an acceptance. Suppose United
Air Lines signs a contract to buy an airplane from Boeing for $3 million. Boeing
builds the plane and delivers it to United. United says sorry, wo don't need it
any more, and we had not given you any money yet so no deal. You think that
would be the end of it?

and yes he would have the choice of either one... he can return
the item and not pay..   its how things work.. he can say he
doesnt like the item or he isnt happy about its condition..
or he thought it was something else..  or he doesnt have the

but if the plane had been accepted in shipping.. then they
would either have to pay up for it.. or return it.. and probably
lose a lot of business with boeing..
delivery was never made..  payment was never sent..
and with mail order and collectible items such as cards..
they are always open to interpretation as to condition and

now i dont agree that this jerk should have done what he did..
but he has the right to do it..  legally...  its wrong to do it..
morally and ethically.. but he does have the right to do it...

Well, I guess I went a very long time without having any problems.  Now,
the odds are catching up to me.  I want to alert everyone to another
possible fraudulent seller of TREK items.

His name is Kevin Kuenkler and he has had items on Lynne's auction in the
past.  Let me be clear about this: this is the first such instance of such
a thing on Lynne's auction; it has simply never happened before.

I'm gonna repeat that for those who only skim-read their emails:

I bid on and won several items from Kevin Kuenkler on Lynne's auction (2
different groups of items on different dates).  I mailed out payment and,
after approx 6 weeks (2 months on the first group), I had received nothing,
so I eMailed him, asking when they went out.  No Reply!  I repeated the
eMail once or twice and eventually eMailed Lynne, asking if she could
contact him.  She did and he replied that the stuff went out.  Apparently,
he made the same claim about stuff won by 2 other bidders who also had not
received their items.  Lynne gave him my contact info and asked him to
contact me.  He said he would.  He has not done so.  I wrote him one more
time and haven't heard back to this date.

Vince, I would, of course, back out of the deal for the Scanlens, as I
mentioned before, it wasn't for me, but for a customer and that's hardly a
good enough reason for a bloodletting. Poor VInce, between this and Kevin,

Interestingly, James and I bicker about the issue of friends and
collectibles and bidding all the time. He feels this stepping back and
letting the other person take a coveted item is for the birds and we
squabble about this alot.
Some items aren't worth it, another will come again, what about, say, the
Rick Berman auto, those of us (well not me, I don't do DS9), but for
example, I have all the other autos, and would need this one, as would
several other friends who collect all, dread holes. How do we all deal with
needing this card (and there only being 2 on Ebay right now???!!!)

I should clarify: I don't think there's anything wrong with friends bidding
against one another, it's just a personal distaste of mine.  Nothing wrong
with anyone who likes to do it.  My competitive spirit just doesn't run in
that particular direction.

thats how u know..
however.. the mail says that the buyer and seller need to contact

I have been in discussion with the seller of the scanlens set and he brings
up a point, my husband flaps about all the time...if we don't outbid each
other when we are friends, the seller loses because he is not getting fair
market prices for his items.
I would think it would be pretty annoying to any potential sellers to listen
to us say we avoid overbidding each other.

Personally I wouldn't be the slightest bit offended if anyone I knew
outbid me on an item.  I want to pay a certain amount, if someone else
wishes to pay higher then that's tough on me.  It's not as if they're
forcing me to dig further into my wallet.

What's funny to me personally is that I don't collect DS9, but wanted to get
this auto to complement my TNG sets, I had decided not to get the Majel or
Delancie or whatever, but I did want to get him to go with the Solow and
justman...I thought it would be nice and am a little disappointed to find

It is an unsolvable probelm. Maybe competitive bidding works when there is a
reasonable supply and a reasonable idea of what is market price, but when good
friends are after the same item in absurdly short supply, then everything
breaks
down. What happens when one friend, who knows the point at which another friend
will stop bidding, goes just beyond that? What happens when one friend just has
more money to spend on cards? I think it is very hard for friends to remain
friends if they keep trying to outbid each other on hard-to-find items. I like
having a few friends with whom I can discuss auction strategies. I like helping
a friend find something, and then later the friend helps me find something. How
can we engage in cutthroat outbidding and remain friends??

But Lynne's points are also quite legitimate. My gripe is not with buyers or
sellers, but with Skybox, for getting us addicted to these cards and then
artificially restricting the supply. That has nothing to do with the Scanlens
set, of course. But at least that is one that pops up regularly for a
reasonable
price. Whoever misses out on the one that started this dispute can certainly
find another for $150 if he follows the auctions closely enough. I have seen
them go for less.

i got a box of insurrection cards and there was no autograph in it..
so i wrote to skybox and sent the 36 damaged cards mostly
dupes of the same cards damaged on the ends for some reason
in the machines that cut them i would guess  and they did replace
them about 3 weeks or so later.. maybe 4.. not too long a wait..
and i got an autograph replacement which was nice.. however..
it was my 5th box of these cards.. and i had already gotten 4
of the same autograph.. the blue faced guy..  grrr..
anyway..  so that is up for trade if anyone cares...
and i have extras of some of the other chases as well.. if
anyone is interested.. but the point i wish to make here.. is..
they didnt send back the same cards that i sent them..
and i have over 300 cards that i can not make a set with...
i have 5 incomplete sets that i am currently working on..
from this particular series..  the insurrection set... and each
one is missing the same cards...
sigh.. i guess ill just have to pull all the cards that i have
12 extras of.. and send them back to skybox and see if
they will send me some of the ones i need to complete
my sets.. since i sent them cards that they didnt replace..

if anyone can help... before i do this... please let me know.

the # in parenthesis is how many of that particular # i need..
so i need 3 of #57... ok??

Playing diffucult person here (after all I am supposed to represent noth
seller and bidder), then if the item weren't in short supply, it wouldnt
hurt to pass it by....I mean, take the Scanlens, I can feel comfortable in
letting it go without bloodshed because it is likely something I can gt
again, what to do with something tha'ts fairly one of a kind....the seller
hopes to make a mint, but the people who are into the rare stuff...and
likely have the moeny to spend...are not competing, sue to friendships...but
thenm a bloodshed based on only two peole is hardly fair market value, it's
deel pockets value, the general value of the item is gonna be lower once the
'nuts' get theirs...;)

makers.....it seems to be working of late
I think the company would say they are offering us the high end collectibles
we crave!
I loves ya, Mark, you know I do, but I think we mustn't make our collecting
choices based on what the big bad company is doing, we have to decide within
ourselves where we draw the line and collect and consider our lifestyle in
doing it. Skybox will eventually adjust themselves to US if we turn away,
but we don't, we continue to buy, sell out their products and the circle
continues. The secondary market is hot and heavy because of us, the anal
retentive, of which I am one, that can't say no and my gripe in that case is
only with me!
But, then I'm the one who says if there's a cure, dont' tell me about
it...;)
All that said, in the case of the Berman auto, they screwed up, they should
have not released the Berman auto, he is not worth the cost his card will
require to acquire it,

I was at a Charity auction a couple of years ago (raising money for the
Sci-Fi writers Medical Insurance Fund) and an item came up for bid that I
really wanted.  Bidding started at $1 for an item that was easily worth $50
and was going up in $1 increments and taking 'way too long.  If it
continued, some other items wouldn't have had a chance to be sold.  I took
the initiative to start bumping the bids quicker.  When it got to $10, I
bid $20.  Someone bid $21.  I bid $30; somebody bid $31.  I bid $40; the
same idiot bid $41.  This is a CHARITY auction, remember.  This continued
until I bid (I think it was) $70 and the same clown bid $71 (I should
mention at this point that the auctioneer should have had the sense to
force the other bidder to go up in $10 or at least $5 increments, but he
just didn't know any better), so I just gave up.  I then turned around to
see a friend of mine was bidding against me that whole time.  Obviously,
she was a cheap S.O.B. and really wanted to prevent me from having the
item.  Well, she got her wish and I don't talk to her anymore (we see each
other monthly).

Am I wrong to say she was being petty during the auction?  Would you all
like to be on either end of that situation?  Especially with a friend?

Well, it depends on intent, I suppose, if they wanted to prevent you from
having the
item, then how good a friend can they be? The presumption here would have to
be two good friends, who honestly want the same item, both know the item is
rare and likely not seen again or at the very least not too darn often,
otherwise waiting would be cool.  For the sake of this argument, we would
assume most everyone's hearts are in the right place.
One other thing...dealers Vs collectors.  I admit, I have bid against
friends in the past, as a collector, though I try to resist my evil
impulses, but if I am buying solely for the intent to resell, I don't bid
against friends, . I am not going to add items to my inventory at a friend's
expense. (there are exceptions, I suppose, no rule is pure black and white,
I have one customer (scanlens set) who directs me to bid for him) As a
collector, I tend to be a bit more competitive/

I had a situation last year where I'd bid on a way cool and rare ST card
set on Auctionuniverse.  I was the only bidder on the item and would have
gotten it for the cheap opening bid.  My maximum bid was quite a bit
higher, but I was outbid on the last day by a fellow trader w/whom I'd
traded before, and was currently in negotiations with.  I was upset, and
got more so after they emailed me; I couldn't tell if they were gloating
or apologizing.  Well, I may have replied w/ something sarcastic but I'm
glad I didn't really blast them and write them off, because they really
did apologize by mailing me "peace offering," one of the items I had
mentioned in our trade negotiations.  This gesture made all the difference
to me, and I was able to chalk it up - all the emotions - as a life
experience.  I would have been hurt otherwise and held a grudge, but now
I would happily trade w/them again.
I hope that trader has read this and realizes how much I appreciated their
gesture.  And maybe the person who outbid you will read this and realize
how much they hurt you.=20

I am in the process of seeing what can be done for a seller who takes money
and doesn't send the items. I found the Internet fraud Watch and was
discouraged to read there is little protection for private individuals who
sell items on auctionnes....
Online Auction Tips

 Understand how the auction works. Many online auctions simply list items
that people want to sell. They don't verify if the merchandise actually
exists or is described accurately.

 Check out the seller. For company information, contact the state or local
consumer protection agency and Better Business Bureau where you live and
also where the company is located. Look at the auction site's feedback
section for comments about the seller. Be aware that glowing reports could
be "planted" by the seller, and that a clean complaint record doesn't
guaranty that someone is legitimate.

 Be especially careful if the seller is a private individual. Most consumer
protection laws and government agencies that enforce them don't deal with
private sales, so if you have a problem, it could be impossible to resolve.

 Get a physical address and other identifying information. You'll need the
seller's name, street address and telephone number to check them out or
follow up if there is a problem. Don't do business with sellers who won't
provide that information.

 Ask about delivery, returns, warranties and service. Get a definite
delivery time and insist that the shipment is insured. Ask about the return
policy. If you're buying electronic goods or appliances, find out if there
is a warranty and how to get service.

 Be wary of claims about collectibles. Since you can't examine the item or
have it appraised until after the sale, you can't assume that claims made
about it are valid. Insist on getting a written statement describing the
item and its value before you pay.

 Use common sense to guide you. Ask yourself: Is what the seller promises
realistic? Is this the best way to buy this item? What is the most I am
willing to bid for it?

 Pay the safest way. Requesting cash is a clear sign of fraud. If possible,
pay by credit card because you can dispute the charges if the goods are
misrepresented or never arrive. Or use an escrow agent, who acts as a
go-between to receive the merchandise and forward your payment to the
seller. Another option is cash on delivery (COD). Pay by check made out to
the seller, not the post office, so you can stop payment if necessary.
 Let the auction site know if you have a problem. Some sites investigate
problems like "shills"e; being used to bid prices up or other abuses of the
auction system. They may also want to know about sellers who don't deliver
or misrepresent their wares. A bad record may result in a seller being
barred from using the site again.

So ,it's not the bidding against, it's the style of bidding.
Really, to make this conversation rounded, some sellers really need to speak
up and give their opinions, what does it say to you if we aren't bidding as
we would like for the sake of friendship?

For those of you who don't know I am writing a ST cards book, it is nearing
completion, well, I hope anyway, and it needs a NAME! I will be sponsoring a
contest for the name the book contest. the winner will receive a free copy
of the book before anyone else!!! ( I know....oooooooo) and get your name in

James wants to call it BiblioTREK.
The book has scans of most Trek cards not commons much), details,
checklists, whatever I can stick in it. In fact, the web site has suffered
since so much of my time is into the book.  It answers the questions..was
there a MS I book. How did the silver spectra cards from the DS9 uncut sheet
come to be, what does Phase I and the Willy Wanka chocolate factory have in

But there is no "market value" for a one of a kind item. In that situation, the
seller gets a windfall no matter what (unless the sell was unfortunate enough to
pay a fortune ofr it), but I see the value of friendship as more important than
increasing the windfall for the seller of a unique item. After all, the seller
can protect him/herself by setting a minimum or reserve price that assures the
seller of at least getting enough to make the sale worthwhile. So the seller is
not totally at the mercy of friends who do not want to outbid each other.

Good point and one of the reasons I defend higher MB's on my auctionne is
that there is no resave, so to protect yourself, one must start higher.

Here's one for ya..let's say I bid on an item at the beginning and later
lose the high bid, before I can go back and place another bid (my husband
who does alot of the bidding for me can wait until the last SECONDS of an
auctionne, nerves me straight to an alcoholic beverage) only to now find a
friend is the high bidder, I bid first, so can I go ahead and bid again?
(I looooooove this devil's advocate stuff...wahahahahahahaha) It's nice to
see the group yakking some....

That is a bit tougher. Consistent with my preference for not bidding against
friends, I would say whoever finds it first should maintain priority among
friends, even if they are temporarily outbid. I also find it advantageous to
wait until the last minute to bid in some cases. If you know a friend found it
forst and is waiting for a lst minute bid, I would respect that. If you have a
good faith belief the friend has dropped out of the bidding, then go for it.
Better yet, contact the friend and ask!

And then there is always one person I know who occasionally calls me to say he
needs me to bid against a friend of his, so he can then outbid me and get on top
without having to outbid the friend while the friend is on top!!

But if we are getting this far into auction etiquette, then we have to start
defining "friend." In some ways, everybody I talk to on the net, or buy from, or
sell to, or trade with, is a "friend." But if I never bid against any of them, I
would not add much to my collection!! So when I vote against bidding against
friends, I mean a fairly small group of good friends, not a large circle of
collecting associates.

I have poked through their site a little bit (having gotten lost on all

Hey I like this.  All I have to do from now on is send messages to everyone
I know saying that I'm bidding on an item and if they are "my friend" they
won't bid against me! <grin>  But then after I do this a few times maybe
they won't be my friend anymore.  Oh well, win some, loose some!

Actually I would never expect a friend to not bid on something they needed
that I'm bidding on just because they know me. I might be a little upset if
I don't win an item I wanted (but not at the other bidder.)  If it's a
friend that wins then I'm happy that they were able to get another item for
their collection and I'll just wait for another one to come along
(hopefully at a lower price.)

After over two years of running the Auctionne site, we have had our first
bad seller.
Kevin Kuenkler  [e-mail]
 I urge caution in dealing with this individual.
He auctionned off items and took payment from 5 people and none of them
received their items. I sent a letter requesting he respond to these
individuals and when that received no response, called him. He replied that
all items had been shipped out. I am not a skeptic at heart, but I do not
believe 5 packages could get lost. I told him I would send him the email
addresses of all affected parties and he needed to contact them and resolve
the issue which he said he would. (and did not) A week later, one of the
buyers called him to find out what was going on and he claimed not to have
gotten my email with all the details (you know...the one sent 5 minutes
after O hung up the phone from him)
He told one customer he was having family problems and didn't have access to
the items and offered to send another collectors the items he won free after
the customer complained about being charged $7 for shipping on 10 cards
worth $3.
The amount he took was small, the principle large. People need to appreciate
the responsibility that goes along with accepting people's money. Once you
have their money, it becomes your priority to get their items to them
promptly and safely. People like him need to grow up and join the adult
world.
I believe that occasionally life can interfere with our hobbies, but there
are ways to address even that so that buyers are not left standing out in
the cold.

Well, sure, it is nice to see a friend get something, but I don't think it is
quite as simple and friendly as you make it sound. The problem is when you
still
get what you were after, but spend an extra $100 just because your friend bid
against you. Then your friend gets nothing and you spent way more than you
would
have otherwise. How would that leave you feeling?

This weekend we will be making some changes to the consignors section of the
site.
First, we will be adding 'blessings' to the consignor's name. If I have done
business with the consignor,then a small image of a cross will appear next
to their name. A white cross means we have done at least one transaction, a
silver cross means we have done several deals, a gold means the highest
'blessing' meaning I have implicit trust. New consignors will be required to
offer references and can't add items until I hear back from the references.
For those people I already know well, I may not require this, but if I do,
dont' get your feelings hurt, I want to offer bidders assurances if they
need it.
The blessings will be my personal 'stamp of approval' I still encourage
people to leave feedback as needed, I will be working on making the feedback
listing easier to use as well.
As an auctionne service, I can't be responsible for the transactions I don't
personally deal with, but I try to help out with problems as I am able, this
is the first one we have hit such a wall with.

I know a dealer who pulled four (4) Berman's out of one case, and did not
get a Captain Sisko out of four cases.  Being a redemption who knows how
many could be out there, certainly not anyone at SkyBox.

Well, did you see the article in NSU about Season VII? Nice images for the
autos. I gotta get some sell sheets and am trying to get promos as before,
hope hope!

Release date is 7/21 and I am not yet taking preorders for it, but soon, I
suppose. :groan: I haven't recovered from DS9 yet and I didn't even collect
that one.  I know they are doing Voyager after this one, but that's all I
know, i need a new mole :(
Did everyone get their orders in for the DS9 gold cards, limited to 999 is
not too many, so dont' dwadle!

PARAMOUNT Classic releases the STAR TREK fan documentary
TREKKIES into 330 theaters nationwide this week. It's a wonderfully
entertaining and hilarious look at TREK culture, with profiles
