  7. A couple of things on a Monday morning:
  8.  
  9. 1)  I was at a "grown-up" party this last Saturday and witnessed several
  10. people G-ing out.  It was incredibly disturbing to say the least.  There
  11. is this creamy white stuff going around.  It is a lot more potent than
  12. most of the GHB that has been in SLC lately (assuming it's GHB to begin
  13. with).  If you know anyone who likes to use G, warn them to use extreme
  14. caution with this stuff.  I saw people vomiting blood, convulsing on the
  15. floor, and stuck in comatose states for hours (and of course the guy who
  16. owned the house was being a complete asshole...).  What really pissed me
  17. off was that I was in no position to call an ambulance, but there were
  18. at least 5 undercover vice cops in there.  They were so obsessed with
  19. busting drug dealers that they would have let people die in that place. 
  20.  
  21. I think what happens a lot of the time is that people take G in
  22. conjunction with a stimulant like E, crystal, or coke and they're fine. 
  23. But then they introduce another depressant in their system like K or
  24. alcohol and then they are very far from fine.  For example, one of my
  25. friends was having a great time and then she snorted probably 100mg of K
  26. and the next thing you know she was convulsing on the floor for an hour
  27. and a half.  Another guy that I saw drop on the dance floor actually had
  28. a beer in his hand.
  29.  
  30. 2)  I am accumulating a growing amount of anecdotal evidence that some
  31. of this acid going around right now that is causing bad trips is in fact
  32. PCP.  I did some research and when I realized how stupidly simple it is
  33. to make PCP from readily acquirable chemicals, I can't imagine that
  34. someone isn't doing this.  Does anyone know if there is some sort of
  35. chemical reagent that we can get our hands to test some of the stuff
  36. that is going around?  PCP is incredibly dangerous for both the
  37. potential it has to inflict psychological trauma on all but the most
  38. well-balanced souls and for the proven long term effects that it has on
  39. cognitive function.  (Incidentally, K works in much the same way as PCP,
  40. and after reading about the long term disruption in cognitive function
  41. that has been observed in animals given a steady supply of K, I don't
  42. think I'm ever going to touch the stuff again.)
  43.  
  44. 3)  Can we get some sort of info to pass out to people about SOMAs
  45. (carisoprodol)?  These things are all over the place and there are going
  46. to be a hell of a lot more of them in the near future.
  47.  
  48. 4)  Finally, there is one thing that I don't think the Dancesafe fliers
  49. adequately address:  When you acquire drugs from an illicit source,
  50. there is no way to absolutely sure of what you are getting.  Almost
  51. every truly unpleasant experience I've ever witnessed someone have on a
  52. drug (I wouldn't qualify any of my own experiences as particularly
  53. unpleasant) has involved someone mismeasuring a dosage, underestimating
  54. a drug's purity, or taking a drug that they did not intend to take. 
  55. While drugs are certainly not good for you and habitual use can
  56. sometimes lead to long term problems, I would say that 95% of the
  57. problems out there are entirely due to the illicit nature of the drug
  58. economy.  Oh well, that's just my two cents on a Monday
  59. morning...

  571. Amandas message about the anti-rave assembly
  572. tomorrow...

  574. Just so everyone knows, the Salt Lake Awareness
  575. Project WILL be represented at this meeting, but we
  576. WILL NOT be speaking or handing out literature. We
  577. will be there taking notes and observing so we can
  578. come back and make a move that will be well planned
  579. out. 
  580.  
  581. The Intermountain Harm Reduction Project (the agency
  582. that SLAP is a part of) has a big focus in drug policy
  583. reform, so we have practice in working within to
  584. change things. Although most of you can't see the work
  585. we're doing, we are building allies around harm
  586. reduction based education at raves. Last week, over 50
  587. people were trained by Theo Rosenfeld, the community
  588. organizer for dancesafe, on reality based drug
  589. education. In this audience were health care
  590. professionals, representitives from the police
  591. department, and teachers. We ARE making progress by
  592. working within the groups that oppose us, instead of
  593. fighting with them. 
  594.  
  595. Just like its easy for us to spread the word about
  596. getting to skyline to defend ourselves, it would be
  597. easy for the people speaking on Thursday to spread the
  598. word to effectively end raves, which I'm sure NO ONE,
  599. whether or not they use drugs, wants. 
  600.  
  601. My advice here is to tread with caution. A concern of
  602. mine that I'd like to put on the table is the idea of
  603. underage ravers representing us at this meeting as
  604. well. It's not that I think that you suddenly become
  605. mature and intelligent at 18 (I can name quite a few
  606. people who aren't...) but the legality of it. Part of
  607. the reason raves even happen is because we say they
  608. are 18+. How will it look if there are people underage
  609. speaking? Like I said, this is just something I'm
  610. concerned about and I want to put the issue on the
  611. table for discussion.

  757. meeting tonight.  I just found out an hour ago that I'm being sent out
  758. to Dugway on emergency assignment for the evening.  I really want to
  759. apologize for my seemingly endless ability to find ways to miss
  760. important meetings.

  762. On another front:  I attended an organizational meeting for the
  763. University of Utah chapter of Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP)
  764. on Monday night.  The SSDP's primary mission is to repeal the provision
  765. in the Higher Education Act that bans students with minor drug
  766. convictions from getting federal financial aid.  We are hoping that by
  767. next year we will be big enough to have an impact during the state
  768. legislative session as well.  We might also do some Dancesafe-style harm
  769. reduction in collegiate settings.  If any of you guys are in college and
  770. want to get involved, let me know.

  971. FYI, I've taken some concrete steps to improve my image in the rave
  972. community.  In particular, I no longer provide "referrals" for party
  973. favors, I have severely curtailed and become much more private in my own
  974. personal usage, and I am no longer willing to be seen at raves with
  975. certain entities.

  977. At the same time, I acknowledge that once one has established, even
  978. unwittingly, a certain reputation, it can be very difficult to
  979. overcome.  I would ask that you and everyone else in SLAP please try to
  980. put out a positive word for me.  I do not sell party favors at either
  981. the retail or wholesale level and this is something that I definitely
  982. want people to know.  Other than the potential for gratuitous sex (which
  983. I have a very strong disdain for), there is absolutely no positive
  984. aspect in people assuming that I am involved in this.
