Subject: (sgclegacy) Welcome to the SGC list
Brothers,
Sorry took a little longer than I'd thought. I still have some configuration left to do, but the list is now up and running. Just send your messages
to <sgclegacy@lists.xmission.com>.
Our four brothers from Weber should be subscribed as well as a few
principals of Delta Chi that were at the meeting.
If others would like to join, have them send a message to <majordomo@xmission.com>
with "subscribe sgclegacy" in the body. No subject.
I'd say we give a week for others to subscribe before we try to do
business on this list.
Otherwise we'll have to resend everything. :)

Elgin, sorry that it took so long to respond to your message. This is Jake
McBride the current Interchapter president here in Logan. I read your message
the day that you sent it but was in a hurry and put it off til later. It is
just now that I am going through all of my old messages to see what I need to
do.
Up here at Utah State we feel that the new program is going to be a great
thing. We understand that it has been changed under the direction of the
Brethren and feel that it is something that will strengthen the future of
Sigma Gamma Chi. The organization of such a social group as Sigma Gamma Chi
or the IMA is set up to provide College age men of the church a place where
they can go to associate with others who keep and maintain their same values.
The Ideals of Sigma Gamma Chi have been the basis for how we have run our
program for many years and we have seen this program change lives as well as
provide some serious good times and fun experiences. I can't tell you of how
many young men I know who have found their way back to the strait and narrow
by joining this fraternity. I can tell you of one friend of mine from my
chapter who is now serving a mission. He is a very accomplished snowboarder.
He had decided to forego a mission to train for the 2002 olympic games. After
one year in Sigma Gamma Chi his mind was made up that he needed to serve the
Lord. We believe that the IMA is nothing more than progress along the same
lines. I am sure that you have had similar experiences. Although it is hard
to say goodbye to the way it has been we see no reason in holding onto Sigma
Gamma Chi. I understand that the church is allowing those who wish it so to
hold onto the name for a while. The way that we see it, at some time in the
future that will come to an end and we will no longer be able to use that
name. We figure that if we head full steam into the IMA right now, then in
the future when others are told that it is time to change over for good and
leave it behind we will be so much further along with developing our program.
That is what we want. I am sorry to say that I will not be too involved with
the IMA next year. I have been elected to student body office up here on the
Utah State campus and that will keep me from remaining fully active in the
program. I hope that you are seeing similar progress there at Weber. Let me
know what you are going to be doing with the program next year. I would be
interested in hearing. Next years Interchapter President is going to be Erick
Simmons. I am sure that he would also be interested in working with the other
Universities to see what it is that they are doing.
Well, Thank you for your time and I hope that all is well there in Ogden.
Jake McBride

Everything seems to be positive for the future at this time. I will contact you

From: Eric Herrmann <shpshftr@xmission.com>
Subject: (sgclegacy) Welcome to the PAF v5 for MacOS X mailing list
So you're asking what did I just get subscribed to?
The sgclegacy is an old mailing list I've had laying around XMission that
hasn't been used in a couple years. So I thought I would recycle it.
I was going to create a new list to discuss this PAF thing with but I
thought it ought to have some sort of cool/code name or something. When we
have one I'll change the name.
Just thought it would be easier this way to have a discussion.
BTW, on this list is:
Eric Herrmann <shpshftr@xmission.com>, Sorenson Media
Mel Walker <mwalker@xmission.com>, Prosoft
Barry Watts <bwatts@financialfusion.com>, Financial Fusion
Keith Lund <klund@redrocksw.com>, Red Rock
(Maybe you'd like to introduce yourselves.)
I've known Keith off-and-on for around 22 years since playing Melee and
Wizards in junior high. Mel and I worked together at Novell and Iomega for 5
years. And Barry worked with Mel and I at Iomega for 1-2 years.
If there are others you know who would like to be involved in some way have
them subscribe to this list. It will be a good place to exchange ideas until
a website is actually needed. :)
I think it will be good to have a large pool of talent involved as not
everyone will have time to always be coding.
So I'd like to get an initial group together of around a half to a full
dozen. Come up with a plan of what we'd like to do. And then make a pitch to
the Church.
I'm playing this whole thing by ear right now, so I'm very open to
suggestions.
Any questions? suggestions?

So I am curious if this project is a humanitarian (free) or is there
designs about some monetary reward in the end?
I could use the money, but the Church is probably not going to let us
look at the source code and generate a for profit produce. Old code is
over rated anyway. We could just look at the existing products and
design something better. Maybe some server-client interaction so as your
relatives do their work you can see the results on your computer.

Everyone,
Sorry for any confusion. I sent a beautiful welcome message last
night, but apparently it arrived before majordomo finished
sub_scribing everyone.
I thought a list would be a good way to communicate. Also sort of a
way to know who's in and who's out.
Why sgclegacy? It's an old mailing list I had laying around not being
used. So I'm recycling it until I know what to call the new list. Any
name suggestions?
Here on the list are:
Mel Walker, Prosoft
Keith Lund, Red Rock
Barry Watts, Financial Fusion
Eric Herrmann, Sorenson Media
I've known Keith off-and-on for 22 years. Mel and I worked at Novell
and Iomega for 5 years. And Barry worked with Mel and I at Iomega for
about 2 years.
If you know others might have an interest, let them know about the
list and I'll subscribe them.

Subject: (sgclegacy) Re: PAF
Hi Eric (and everyone else),
I got your message through Keith and thought I would tell you what I knew.
I contacted Steve Canon (the guy in charge of the project ) about
doing the same thing back in March. He gave me the same story. I told
him I would do the work as a hobby and gave him a proposal for the
first phase of the work.
One thing they wanted was a better installer. Apparently they are
paying royalties for the one they are using right now. I built a
simple one using stuffit and agreed to let them use it royalty free
if they wanted. Nothing more ever happened though. I think they are
too busy with the windows version to really care about the mac.
There are two other things they wanted in phase one, but I'd have to
look through my old emails to get the details. One was a better
GEDCOM importer, but I can't remember the other.
Tuesday I talked to a lady on the bus who works at church HQ. She
told me about the turn of events and told me to contact Steve to get
the source. I tried unsuccessfully yesterday and planned to try again
this afternoon.
So in short, I would be interested in joining the group. My mother in
law has been after me for several years to do something about PAF,
and this effort would really make her happy.
If someone else is already in contact with Steve, that's fine. If
not, I'll let him know there is a group of five of us ready to take
on the project.
Thanks,
Bill Peters

Which turn of events?
Have you looked at the source?
Do we have some place we can put the source?
Anybody have a favorite repository?

I've tried to get my mom to use Reunion, but she just doesn't like it.
PAF is the only thing for her.

I've never had contact him other than my father speaking to him.
If you want to be our point of contact with Steve, that's fine with
me.

Still there. This is just my private email.

I'm not too sure on the details. I gathered it was a budget meeting
where they they decided _not_ to allocate any money for the mac
version of PAF. The lady that I know is actually on the PAF crew and
is (I think) in charge of QA for the windows version. She has
volunteered her services to help with usability testing and QA.
Otherwise, I don't have the source. I do have an ftp site where we
could put it, though, if no one else has a better place.

I'll call him after lunch and see if I can get the source from him.
Probably some legal hoops to jump through first, though.

Well, nothing official yet. When I talked to him Thursday afternoon
he reaffirmed the church position on funding (that there wouldn't be
any) and that he needed some time to find out what we would be
allowed to do on the project. I'm supposed to call him back on Friday.
However, he did seem interested in the project and in helping us out.
I think there's a good chance of us getting going on it soon. I'll
let you know more when I talk to him this week.

Here's the latest in my dealings with my PAF contact at church HQ. As
you can see, not much has changed, and there seems to be little hope
at this point that they will change their ways. (I first contacted
this guy over two years ago.)
However, the parable of the unrighteous judge comes to mind. Perhaps
if I leak you his email address and we all weary him on a weekly
basis, something may happen.
Anyone have any other ideas?
