Gina :) =20 =20 Hey Guys,=20 As you all know, what I love the most about Roswell is its brilliant = writing. However, one aspect that I feel really needs to be fleshed out = more are the friendships, or lack thereof, on the show between the = humans and the aliens. We all know that Max and Liz are soulmates and = Maria and Michael, especially after "Independence Day" have bonded, but = generally there is no interaction between the aliens and humans except = in a romantic capacity.=20 Though Max and Liz have taken a "step back" and Maria and Michael's = tempestuous relationship has been up and down from the beginning, surely = we could still see them interacting as people and friends. Prior to the = break-up of Max and Liz, it looked as though Isabel and Liz may have = been making inroads to a frienship. Maria and Isabel also seemed to = reaching an understanding(in regards to their mutual caring for = Michael)and yet we've barely seen them communicate since.=20 Conversely, the human-human and alien-alien frienships have been written = extremely well. It is quite refreshing to see Liz, Maria and Alex link = arms and talk like the life long friends that they are. You can tell = that they all genuinely love each other as only best friends can. = Max,Michael and Isabel have also formed a wonderful bond/family and are = literally each others' support systems. However, I really think that = these two distinct groups have to get together in more platonic pairings = every so often so that we can get a sense of a real connection being = formed between the 6 people.=20 This inconsistency has bothered me a little these last few episodes. Why = did Liz not go to Michael after she hesitated during "The Balance" and = attempt to explain to him her actions? Did they not come to a = semi-understanding at the end of "Missing?" Why hasn't Isabel tried to = maintain a friendship with Maria and Liz? She didn't break up with them. = Why hasn't Max tried reaching out to Maria in any way? During the = hallway scene in "Independence Day" Max waved at Maria and she ignored = him. This is the best friend of the girl he's in love with and yet he's = made no overture to try and befriend her. Why hasn't there been any = dialogue between Michael and Alex since "The Balance?" Alex risked his = life(without pause I might add) for Michael, a virtual stranger, and yet = they have not spoken at all since then. For that matter, why hasn't Max = extended his hand in friendship to Alex more too since he did swith = blood samples with him in "Blood Brothers." You get the idea.=20 I would just like to see a little more interaction/interplay between the = aliens and humans. These are the only 6 people(with the exception of = Nasedo) that know the big "alien secret" and yet there is no real = cohesiveness in the group. I think there's tons of possibilities for = some great platonic relationships to form if given the chance. The friendships are definitely lacking here. This is where I have a difficult time with the storyline too. I really enjoy the books for the fact that they do have their friendships within their relationships. Very rich ones at that. The writers here seem so concerned with the guy/girl romances that even the idea of the opposite sex being friends is now as "alien" as the idea of Max, Iz and Michael being from another planet. I agree that the alien relationships are becoming stronger and more defined. But I think that Iz need to be explored more. We know what drives Michael and a little about Max but nothing about Iz other than we think she likes Alex but doesn't want any contact with him for the same reason she thinks M/L and M/M shouldn't be together. At this point she has pushed Alex away so many times I am curious to see if he turns on her in the future, and decides to put his own wall up. The writers have left a lot of the friendships up in the air. I think they come up with ideas at each meeting and forget about the previous discussion about this or that. Not unlike farts in a skillet! I wonder what their story arcs look like...jutting off every which way and giving us only a little each time of this and that. Needless to say I hate it!! I am not looking for closure, but some continuity and path (direction) to where each is going to go. The characters need to grow not only within themselves but with each other. They have started on a little of this but time to see more. I would also like to see the "friend" talk to the guy or girl about the relationship...I would love to see Maria chew Max out for what he is doing to Liz...a friend would most certainly to that! Same with Liz ...I can see her rail Michael up one side and down the other for what he is doing. But Liz and Maria seem afraid to confront the aliens about anything...almost walking on egg shells around them. What is up with that? They won't break for pete's sake! Oh and don't even get me started with Alex! He has such a fantasitic way of easing himself into the scene and making it much richer. Granted up until now he has been the comic relief but I think Colin has a lot to add to the dynamic of the group. I like him so much better in the books~!! Kyle is great but they have left no where for him to go? It almost would have been better to see him stay with Liz and then all would have to try like the devil to keep the secret from him. Would have made a much more interesting storyline I think. Especially with Max in the near distance. A more powerful dynamic Remember Liz didn't really like Max until he saved her...ah the case of falling in love with your caregiver!!! Hear it all the time. I know the writers are trying to make it as "realistic" as possible but they have left a lot out in the process, such as richness of character interaction has been horribly left out. The whole Nasedo thing has got to move along. The interaction and conflict that could arise out of that could be great. If the whole group of 6 had a great dynamic it would make the interaction with the 4th much better because more would be gained or lost depending on what and who Nasedo is. Well enough of my rant...does anyone have anything to say? Seem like only a few are interested in this type of conversation. They've recently recovered them with the cast pics. If you read them the characters don't look anything like the ones we've come to know and love despite their appearance on the covers. Also I believe the author's name is Melinda Metz. She posts answers to her fans questions every now and then on the fan forum bulletin board. ps... don't be ashamed to shop at Kmart, girlfriend!! My cousin worked for a couple of shows doing wardrobe and you wouldn't believe the amount of stuff you see on the stars in your fave shows that came from places like Kmart. They usually just buy some cheap shirt and pants and add a few touches to it. The show is based off of the series. There are five that have been released, but they have different people on the covers. They are republishing them (so far the first four are out) with the cast on the covers. Book 5(The Intruder) will be out in March, Book 6 (The Stowaway) in April and one a month and so on. There are 10 that are planned to be released and last I heard from Melinda (great lady, I've talked with her on Fan Forum), they're not sure how many more there will be...if any. but they are VERY good (so they're a young adult series and I'm in college, but have been addicted since the first one was originaly published) but are so different from the show that sometimes its hard to compare the two. The main characters are all there (a few changed nationalities and last names), but Kyle and Valenti are nothing like how they are on the show. Valenti is pure evil in the books. They come out with the new covers one every month. They are the same books, however, the backs are slightly altered to fit the more recent ones. For instance, the original back of the first book said Max had blond hair and blue eyes, the new one just says he's mysterious. Max & Liz (of course I thought of them first) -- Not enough (of course, NOTHING is enough for me:)) but I'm glad they didn't forget their plotline from the week before. I'm glad Max hasn't totally shunned Liz, which I was afraid would happen. I'm also glad that Liz is STILL attached to him, regardless of how he acted. I think she knows how he truly feels, even though he was drunk, and the FACT that he was drunk makes her forgive him, at least a little bit. *****I agree with you in a way here but I definetly thought Liz should have been a little hurt that Max toyed with her emotions, even if it was under the influence of alcohol. I'm glad Max didn't shun Liz either but it still drives me crazy that Max can walk in and out of Liz's life without any real repercussions. Max needs to know that he has to make a decision to either try and work it out with Liz or let her move on (which we know she can't do) > >3.) The relationships between parents and their children on this show are so much more realistic than the ones on dumb shows like Dawson's Creek. Anyway, I liked the Amy and Valenti thing -- it was cute. And I like Amy and Maria's relationship. I can see myself getting angry at my mom like that. **** I definetly love the relationships between the kids and parents on Roswell as well. Many teenagers feel "alienated" from their parents in one way or another just like the kids of Roswell do and it is so much more realistic than the typical high school television depiction. Amy and Jim were hysterical but even more telling was how Maria is forced to be the adult with her mom sometimes. It definetly adds a new dynamic and layer, previously not touched upon. > >4.) He was just beaten by his foster father again and had to basically "hide out" at the Evans home. I could understand Michael not having the energy for dinner table etiquette. I also think he started lashing out because of the anger he felt at getting a glimpse of Max and Isabel's everyday life. I got the feeling that Michael spends a lot of nights hiding out from Hank in Max's bedroom but not much time socializing with the Evan's as a whole. This might have been his first chance to see them doing something mundane like playing a board game together, making him feel even more uncomfortable. >5.) The parallels of Maria and Liz -- Maria isn't all the Teflon she thinks she is. I love how she was making Liz take the animal calmer-down thingie, and downed it herself when she so much as took a GLANCE at Michael. They both need their alien love. I know it sounds twisted, but it's just twisted enough to work. I mean, can you imagine what would happen if Nasedo did that? He would totally be misusing thier trust. It certainly is a possible plotline for upcoming episodes, and considering that this is a WB show, I can see it happening.... ****Emma, I never even thought about that possibility. It sounds like a good one to me but I suspect that it was really just poor editing. I do like the idea of Nasedo being able to shapeshift into one of the aliens though and wreaking havoc on their lives. If he/she does do that, it will be a giant test of the friendship and trust that has been built between Max and Liz and Michael and Maria. I like the idea that Nasedo could be anyone though. This is straight out of the X-Files. As we now know, it seems to take a tremendous amount of effort for these aliens to shape-shift, unlike those aliens on the X-Files. If Max, Isabel, and Michael have the same ability, but have yet to uncover it, how did they appear as young children in human form upon discovery? As we see the alien trio now, they either have twins or there are three dead individuals out there. Could Nacedo have killed those humans that look like Max, Isabel, and Michael, protecting there identities? Remember many episodes ago, when Maria was commenting on Isabel's looks? She basically said that Isabel always looks perfect(which is true!). Maybe she is manipulating her looks, erasing those facial imperfections most teens go through daily. That's a really interesting theory and one I hadn't thought about. What if the three aliens literally did "take" human form when they got out from their pods? Max, Isabel and Michael are still relatively "young" and have yet to realize their full alien or human potential, one of which may be the ability to shape shift. I suspect though that if any of them would be able to, it would probably be Max, whose own powers seem to be growing ( as witnessed during the final scene of "The Convention" when he was able to move Hubble's gun away without touching it) I do think though that there is a difference between shape shifting and the healing that Max did to Michael. Like when Max saved Liz in the pilot, I think what Max did to Michael was "manipulate the molecular and I assume biological structure" of his face, not shape shift, which I assume would take much more effort and skill. However, I really think that the shape shifting is a trait of a different alien species and that Max, Isabel and Michael are not the same as Nasedo. In the X-Files, not all of the aliens have the shape shifting capability and I get the feeling that the same thing is true of the Roswellian aliens. I have nothing to back that up really except that Nasedo seems to be so different than the other three aliens, in temperament(he is a "killer") and ability, which I believe makes them inherently different. Really interesting idea though. Anyone else have any comments?
