though the cd I have contains both the dos and win95 version and the
difference between them is quite obvious to me, one runs under win95 and
one under dos! :)

Ok, thanx guys! The reason I asked is that Chips & Bits is advertising
Pro-Pinball: Timshock
for $19.99 as a DOS CD. When I wrote to them with the same query,
they responded that
yes, indeed, it was a DOS product. Questions to Empire on the
same subject have yet
to be answered.

I think that Timeshock is reduced to budget software tomorrow.
Joysoft(www.joysoft.de) offers it for DM 29 (~$16).
This is the full version, naturally.

Both versions are now distributed as DOS/Windows versions.
This means that you have separate installations dependent on

We are in fact releasing a Pinball double pack that will contain
both of
these tiles for
about $29.95. The approximate release date will be October 15th.
Let me know if I can be of more assistance.

I have tried it :) It is ok, isn't much competition for it out there
anyway. If you manage to order it somewhere (I belive it can be quite hard
to locate some store selling it in the us or anywhere for that part) you
might be a little disapointed on the physics, functionality etc, though in
the end if you really want a pinball editor you might be quite happy with
this one since it has lots of fun tweaks and things you can try out. Belive
me, constructing a good table with this editor takes time and the result
might not be really top notch but it can turn out quite ok or so :) When I
first got the editor and played with it I thought the results of
constructing were kind of acceptable, haven't used it for quite some time
now though. The trouble is the usuability of the editor which is not
exactly userfriendly and that also includes a strange graphic editor which
is hard to use, when placing something on the table the mouse was sometimes
hard to steer preciesly by pixel exact. So many things could have been done
better, developed more, worked more on, with the editor to be short
>Actually, my main two questions are: 1) Is there an English

don't think there is an english version, the distribution for this product
was kind of lousy unless you lived in german I think. gameplay physics
aren't superb, a bit like epic pinball but not really quite as good if I
remember correctly, but then opinions differ (!) :)
I'd say the physics are ok (there is a demo for the editor where you get to
play a "professionally" constructed table with the editor if you are really
curious about the physics).

Subject: [PS] Safeguarding Balls of Steel High Scores
If they are saved in the registry, you can back them up in two ways. One is
to make a copy of your current registry (mine is stored in the file
C:\Windows\User.dat) and put it in a safe place. The second way, which I
used to transfer my high scores from the Windows Plus! version of Space
Cadet to the Full Tilt! version of Space Cadet, probably will work for Balls
of Steel, too. I hand copied all (5) high score registry keys and the
registry keys for each of the five names. But most importantly, I copied
the verification registry key, which worked as some sort of checksum to
make sure I didn't try to alter scores by modifying their values in the
registry. Attempt to duplicate scores without also duplication the
verification key resulted in a wiped-clean high score list in Space Cadet.
However, once I duplicated all 11 pertinent keys (5 scores, 5 names,
1 verification), the high score list was accepted.

BOS doesn't use any verification or checksum on its local high score
tables - we figured that if you wanted to alter the scores stored in the
registry, then you'd only be fooling yourself. If you copy all the entries
in the HKEY_LOCALMACHINE | SOFTWARE | Wildfire Studios | Balls of Steel |
High scores registry folder, you can reinstate them at any time. (You can
also edit the names and scores to suit yourself!) The WorldScores high
scores are a different matter altogether, though...

The more interesting registry key is "Kids the password is" :)
Some unwary adult might put their "kid protection" password in the game.
BOS writes it out to the registry un-encrypted and then the kid finds it.
The kid then has access to all the things protected with that the adult
might have used that same password with (net-nanny, porn pics protectors,
etc.).
Just a thought.
On a totally different note Joel - Did you guys use simple "Eulers"
integration for ball movement? Working on my own simple game and was
interested if you real developers of pinball sims used fancier methods...
Just ignore if you think I might be asking questions that violate your
non-disclosure ;)

as Baffle Ball (1932), one of the first pinball prototypes, Humpty Dumpty

Subject: [PS] Golden Logres: First Impressions
This game looks and sounds great! The ball physics have been
improved (if that is even possible) since Loony Labyrinth and give
you unparalled control.
The three tables are linked a la the 3D Ultra Pinball series and you
have to complete several "missions" to progress to the 2nd and 3rd
tables. However, finishing requirements on those tables puts you
back at the first.
Some things I noticed:
* Mission briefings are in a window that overlays the table and
temporarily freezes the action. I found this to be less intrusive
than I thought it would.
* The ball moves faster than in Crystal Caliburn and Loony Labyrinth.
While one can accustom oneself to the speed, there is another worry.
The return lanes on the first table are partially covered by a
graphic, making it very difficult to determine when the ball will
appear near the flipper. I guarantee you several lost balls until
you get this under your belt.
* You can choose to practice tables 2 & 3 (the only way to play them
without achieving them from table 1), but no high scores are saved
for them.
* This game is complex! The 58-page manual should give you some
warning that this is the most challenging pinball simulation yet.
* LittleWing must be fixated on Arthurian times because this is the
third game (after Tristan and Crystal Caliburn) they have made
using that theme.
* And finally, this game is fun, Fun, FUN! You really do feel a sense
of accomplishment with each mission you finish. It feels like
progressing through and adventure game. Hats of to LittleWing for
producing such a gem!
Peter

Boy this list is slow! Let's see if I can't rile things up a bit.
Which pinball simulations are your favorites and which do you find
the most challenging?
For me, favorites would be Addiction Pinball, and all LittleWing
releases.
Most challenging is definitely Golden Logres!

HALLOWEEN PINBALL ARCADE TRIAL VERSION AVAILABLE FRIDAY
In honor of All Hallows Eve, Microsoft today announced that the trial
version of Pinball Arcade, the Halloween themed table Haunted House, will
be available for download this Friday. Haunted House, circa 1982, has the
distinction of being the first triple-decker pinball table ever created and
is part of the seven licensed pinball tables included in the full retail
version of Pinball Arcade. To download Haunted House, visit the official
Pinball Arcade Web site at:
http://www.microsoft.com/games/pinball
Featuring authentic PC pinball game play, including a realistic physics
model and superior graphics, Haunted House offers gamers a frightfully good
time! Realistic flipper, bumper, ramps, ball and tilt physics give players
the sensation of playing on a real-life pinball table -- each bounce, bump
and flipper behave as they would in an actual pinball game.
Available in US stores starting on November 4, Microsoft Pinball Arcade
features tables from 1930 to 1990, bringing the history of arcade pinball
games to the PC. Pinball Arcade includes such famous tables as Baffle Ball
(1932), one of the first pinball prototypes, and Humpty Dumpty (1947), the
first pinball game with flippers. The game's state-of-the-art physics model
and realistic graphics make for the most authentic pinball simulation on
the PC ever. All seven pinball table games offer a quick, action-packed
break for stress relief or fun.

I found somewhere on the net that some of the pinballs
(that will be released in near future - eg BRUSA) will work in
networked mode. I wonder what does it mean - can we play
in multiplayer mode in such a way that two players play
simultanously or players play like in standard (one-computer)
multiplayer mode one after another but on different computers?
Does anyone have any idea?

i think pinball arcade is already out--you can download the demo from
microsoft's site. i thought timeshock was the best simulation out until i
checked out pinball arcade--it's unbelievably realistic (you can even hear
the ball crack on the "glass" when it bounces up!).

Purchased it --it set up well under Win98. Fun in a historic sense.
Good mechanical feel and sounds.

MS Pinball Arcade seems to be not available in Europe yet.
PP: Brusa was released 30th October here in Germany but not in the US
until now.
Well, Brusa isn't Timeshock and you should really download
a demo when it will be available and then check if you like the
table.
Cheers

In a Head-to-Head game of BRUSA, both players play at the same time, but
shots you make on your table can affect what happens on your opponents
table. There are three rounds, each is a sort of race, where you are
trying to make shots to get to the finish line first.

It nice that we have occasion to talk with someone from ProPinball development team.
I have not seen final version of BRUSA so far and I have some questions. I found
Information that you have 'motion blur' effect on the ball. Can you describe in some words
what does it mean? How many different modes do you have in the game? When BRUSA
will be available in the USA?

Motion blur is basically the "trail" you behind a fast moving object when
viewed on film/TV.
This means that fast moving balls look like a streak across the table. The
game allows you
some control over how visible this trail is.
> How many different modes do you have in the game?
There are 16 cities, each of which has it's own mode, though some of these
are simple
quickshots. Then there are loads of other features including various
frenzies, challenges,
and a race mode where you try to get back from San Francisco to New York.
> When BRUSA will be available in the USA?
Although the PC version is finished, we cannot release it in the US before
the Playstation
version. We're just finishing that now, though to be honest, the chances of
it getting
through Sony's approval system in time for a XMas release are pretty slim,
so I'd expect to
see it early next year.
