So I went to Area One yesterday and I gotta say Paul Okenfold is a pretty
decent DJ.  The reality is that he is just a DJ and nothing more.  Nothing
more than mixing the beats.  Quite boring when you really think about it.

The Orb, on the other hand, were amazing as always.  Lots and lots of
layers, all kinds of things going on all the time.  LX even had is little
doll set up on his deck.  The set was short, about an hour, and included
LFC, Perpetual Dawn, A Huge..., all the old favs. but very little of the
newer stuff, which was fine.  He ended with Mr. Sandman again which I
thought was kinda cool.

Yup.  On all above counts.  My point is, a DJ CAN just mix beats, and be
good, and interesting.  It comes down to (a) whether they play
interesting music and (b) whether they program it well - take you on a
journey.  Point (a) is almost impossible to find, especially with all
the excrement that's being churned out these days, and point (b) - well,
when most DJs insist on playing one style, and their whole set sounds
like the same song....

Example - I am sure many on the list have heard LX just mix beats - and
(at least in the case where I heard him), both (a) and (b) were
fulfilled admirably.  The set I heard him do - two decks and a mixer, no
samples, etc. - he played jungle/drum and bass and it was amazing.
Normally I don't even LIKE jungle, and I assure you there was no "hero
worship factor" going on - it was good and that was that - he actually
played good material, programmed the set well, etc.

A story from that show - after set, he was signing autographs, and some
dude actually asked him who the guy in the floating pagoda chair thing
is in the Ultraworld booklet.  LX was pleasant about it, at least.  "Oh,
that's me!"  I would have been inclined to sign it, "Dear dumb dumb,
read the credits, Love, LX" or something like that.  At any rate, this
should dispel the stories that LX is always a crank with fans!

I have all their stuff.  First album is AMAZING, LEGENDARY in fact - it's
called "Are You Shpongled?"  Very psychedelic, very good - down beat psy
trance/dubbed out bliss.  Excellent production, etc.  Highly recommended.
Their second album which just came out however, was a bit disappointing -
mainly on the level that there is an extreme Latin flavor on this album.
There are still some GREAT tracks on there, but there are some salsa ones
too.  This one's called "Tales Of The Inexpressible"

If anyone wants to check them out, I'd be down for trading copies of
either...

i gotta agree, although his sound is awesome and inspiring, i lost alot of
respect when i was flipping through the channels the other day. i wound up
on MTV, and they were giving this 'Planet of the Apes' special.
He's done a dance mix based on Danny Elfman's scores.

Except he had some other guy there, going through Elfman's sample beds in
Pro-Tools, while he sat there and said..yes....no....nah....nope...next
one....

i guess there comes a point where your too big to do your own sample
searching.

and the final mix wasn't all that. "mr. elfman, please let ME take a crack
at it" hehehe!

I saw that special, and I got the feeling that he probably had no clue how
to use pro-tools.  On the other hand I have been in those types of of videos
before, and the person in charge will often orchestrate scenarios which
would never happen in a real work situation.  It might have seemed more
interesting to have Oakenfold barking orders to his lacky rather than have
him doing it himself.

Oh god...that "remix" was so terribly terribly not anything close to being
enjoyable. and it wasn't even trancy...Oakenfold trying to do planet of the
Apes drum n Bass? NO! I was just really dissapointed after watching that
crap. oakenfold looks like such a tool, by the way, with his bleached tips
and such.

the actual movie better not suck, because the original is one of my
favorites.... hmmmm

I take it you went to the Saturday Pine Knob, er, DTE Energy Music
Theater? I'm going tomorrow. So did you skip Moby and watch Oakie for two
hours? How was the overall show? I'll be going alone for the first time,
and I haven't been to Pine Knob for years so I'm sure things have changed
considerably? Were you there all 8 hours? Was it difficult skipping back
and forth between the main stage pavilion and the tent? Are you allowed
to take backpacks, food, etc, into the festival? Have they solved the
traffic problems into and out of the area? Any input you can provide will
be greatly appreciated.

been edited together...the video itself was so bad that it took my mind off

On this (off-) topic I cannot remain silent: Family Guy sucks ass. The most
derivative, unoriginal, unfunny and poorly designed/animated 22 minutes of
tripe I've ever had the displeasure of watching, I had hoped it was
cancelled forever, never to be rerun again.

Just my opinion, of course; your mileage may vary. No offense intended,
either, Ben-jammin', but I've just really got it in for that "show."

great music. recommendations will be followed.

maybe a good place to start is stuff that the orb sample: scratch, mikey
dread, mad prof, pablo/tubby, johnny osborne, the techniques, prince far

a nice place to get a taste of scratch perry is on the Arkology 3cd set.
I've gotten a bunch of albums of his that are where the songs from
arkology originally showed up, & you would think they would be semi-weak
except for the tracks showcased but they're total quality...most of
these are from the early 70s I would guess, but here's whats in the pile
in front of me

scratch perry - arkology
scratch - scratch attack (this has the songs heavily sampled by
orb...blackboard jungle dub)
upsetters - super ape & return of super ape
max romeo & upsetters - war ina babylon
junior murvin - police & thieves
congoes - heart of congoes
(anyone else know of any GREAT perry albums? let me know)

here's some good ones to begin w/ that I wish someone had told me about:

augustus pablo - king tubby meets the rockers uptown
mikey dread - african anthem (also heavily sampled by the orb)
scratch - arkology 3cd box
    (get 'upsetters - super ape' next if you like arkology)
keith hudson - pick a dub (I'm alright was recently remixed by orb

wow...this is some amazing music. POSITIVE...to hear it on a nice
system, wow. changes your state of mind, no pharmaceuticals req.

As mentioned in my rant, I was as impressed with Oakie as I had hoped I
would have been. He was good just not great.  Certainly not a great as he
seemed to think he was...

Getting between the two stages was an absolute nightmare and if I had not
had the foresight to get to the second stage (It was inside...air
conditioning) when I did it would have taken forever.  There was no freely
flowing traffic between the two, we were made to line up to get there (45
mins) so we stayed for LX and most of Oakie then went outside again to see
Moby who got on stage late anyway so we saw most of him too.  Bags were
allowed but they were searching everyone with a bag quite thoroughly.  Food
and drink was okay, booze obviously not.

    I can't really say he's Orb-like, but Augustus Pablo produced some
of the sickest dubs ever created and introduced the melodica to reggae
music.  A good place to start is his collaboration with King Tubby (the
true dub heavyweight champion) called King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown.
Alex seems to be quite fond of Lee Scratch Perry samples so if you search
out some early (late sixties, early seventies) stuff by him and the
Upsetters you should be able to spot some Orb samples.  Finally The
Scientist vs. The Vampires (or the blood sucking vampires or something to
that effect) is one sick ass slab of dub (alex sampled it on the title
track of U.f.Orb), other recordings by the
Scientist are also worth checking out once you really get rolling.

As for off topic rants:  I laughed my ass off at last week's Family Guy,
and I too was very pleased to see it return.  Sure it may be derivative,
but come on its a cartoon, if you want depth go read a book.  Now that the
Simpsons are running out of steam I'm stoked to see someone else carrying
the torch. "You know what I haven't had in a while? . . . Big League Chew"

Paul Oakenfold is the king of all hacks in an industry filled with them,
as if being able to mix ten boring trance records that all sound the same
is some big accomplishment.  I just can't believe someone who has been
spinning that long has grown so little, except for his ego that is.

licensing and royalties go out to the labels that pressed up the records
used in the mix.
hence the proliferation of "For Promo Use Only" mix-tapes and CD-r's at your
local record shops... those guys aren't paying royalties.

Subject: (orb) Orb dub connection

    The Scientist record I was talking about yesterday is actually
called "The Scientist Rids the World of the Curse of the Evil Vampires"
Also I remembered the name of the Lee Scratch album with a lot of Orb
samples on it: The Upsetters "Blackboard Jungle Dub"  as in "Welcome to
blackboard jungle, now don't you fumble just be humble".
