That's because the nm-list hasn't been
using Majordomo as list server software
for at least a year or more.

As far as I know, it is still Mssr. Murphy
and xmission.com is owned by Pete Ashdown
who is/was an active member of nm-list.

Subject: Stuff
Date: 01 Aug 1997 17:12:27
Well, fine, I must admit that I'm a little burned-out at the moment and
I'm not up to doing any detailed reviews, but what the hell, I can at least
mention some of the interesting things I've procured recently:
Nels Cline & Thurston Moore
"Pillow Wand" CD
Little Brother Records, PO Box 3224, Eugene, OR 97403
Aside from the overly-cute credits (Cline on "electric wind-burn guitar/
psyche flurry girl sting" and Moore on "electric fly-hair gtr/switch action
grease"), what you've got here is pretty straight-forward atmospheric
guitar work. The five tracks are all over nine minutes long, recorded on
12/30/96. Must've been a THC-drenched recording session, or at least it
makes a good simulation. Laid-back even at its scrapey-ist moments, and
I like this one a lot. The cardboard-sleeve packaging makes it really easy for
the CD to fall out, though.
Dome CD
Cursor Club, PO Box 3327, Hollywood, CA 90078
This kinda confused me at first because it came in the mail with no info
at all and has nothing but song titles on it. Apparently it's some slightly
dub-ish ambience from people who have never heard of the original Dome
or else they wouldn't have stolen the name. Dumbasses. But nonetheless
this actually seems pretty cool. It's about 20 minutes long and though I've
only checked it out once so far it didn't annoy me.
Demi Semi Quaver
"3" CD
(Dohb Discs/Sony Japan)
The third one from DSQ, which I only just got. For those of you not in
the know about 'em, the group's first two CDs were on the God Mountain
label from Tokyo. The group, led by singer/chanter/channeler Emi Eleonola,
have now jumped to a major-label division, but it hasn't made any difference
to them. This CD features a strong presence from Yuji Katsui, a Tokyo
violinist who's behind the Maboroshi no Sekai label, the group Bazooka Joe,
and others. He's amazing. Emi, as always, makes me not so sorry that Nina
Hagen went downhill so badly, because she's an awesome replacement.
Great stuff, again.
Pugs
"Pugs Bite the Red Knee" CD
Casual Tonalities, 1258 North Highland Ave, Hollywood, CA 90038
Hoppy Kamiyama of the God Mountain label's involved with a number
of groups, the Pugs being the one with the highest profile over here. Hard
to believe, but they're actually playing second stage for half of
Lollapalooza.
Not sufficient reason to consider paying for that travesty, but cool anyhow.
I only just got this and have checked it out once, but it impressed me
greatly.
Hell, they even do a revved-up cover of "Tequila" that didn't annoy me.
Generally high-energy, high-speed avant-collage-punk-something. Hard to
classify, and that's a good thing.
Also got stuff from Buffalo Daughter, Spiritualized, Spectrum, and
Amon Duul II, all of which I'm enjoying. How about you?

It is on SmartList. Mail to nm-list-owner for status, and if you don't get

as an addendum to Mason Jones' review of Nels Cline and Thurston Moore's
Pillow Wand, there's also a Thurston and Nels "In-Store" performed on the
same day as the recording of pillow Wand at Rhino in LA.
It's available on Father Yod records, and I find it to be pretty
amazing. One track, 45 minutes long, ranging from atmospheric to
scratchy and loud. Definitely worth checking out.

death. About 200 folks have dropping in and offreed comments and memories.

Burroughs died saturday at age 83, in case you didn't know.
Also, Nigerian bandleader Fela Kuti died this weekend.

Hello. I've got this Jon Rose CD, "Pulled Muscles" on Immigrant Records. I
don't want it anymore, so I'll cheerfully trade it for interesting
noise. I am particularly interested in works by Asmus Tietchens, Achim
Wollschied/SBOTHI, Kapotte Muziek, Bee Queen, Hanatarash, Violent Onsen
Geisha, Incapacitants, Esplendor Geometrico, Masonna, Brume, Small Cruel
Party, Daniel Mensche or any vaguely similar thing.

Hello, I am starting a little mailing list/ezine which will list upcomming
experimental/art/jazz/difficult/other music shows happening in and around
Austin, Texas. Yes, not much of that goes on here, but when it does, it's a
shame that not everybody who's interested hears about the shows. The list
will come out sporatically, whenever there are shows happening and should
be free of junk. I plan this to be as useful as the Texas Shows List, but
devoted just to the above kind of music.
Next show on list: the Sound the Alarm! show at the Hyde Park Theater on
September 2nd, 8pm. More deatils if you join.
Email me if you are interested, or have any shows that would fit in.
Thanks,

improvising artists in berlin have a venue - the anorak.
the anorak is a poor and small non-profit underground club in berlin
which is organised by artists. they have about 2 concerts each week
which are always crowded. this is exspecially interesting for
unknown artists.
the conditions are the same for everyone:
the artists who play get the entrance money. the entrance fee is normally
DM 7.-, ($4 ?), and you can expect enough paying people to raise DM 300.-
($ 170?), even if you nobody knows you but your mother.
a crowded house can fill your pockets with up to DM 700.- ($400?)
many stuff members and artist and so on have free admission.
many popular berlin resident artists like tony buck, lenoid soybelman or
conrad bauer e.g. can be found on or before the stage on those
evenings.
there are two different evenings:
* thursday for performances and lectures,
* and sunday for improvised concerts. there may be exceptions.
if you want to stay for more than one day in berlin
the anorak crew can pass you on to other
clubs in and around berlin (e.g. potsdam) for about the same conditions.
if you are interested in performing at the anorak please contact
felix buebl at buebl@cs.tu-berlin.de

Date: 18 Aug 1997 20:43:03 -0500
JOHN CAGE CELEBRATION TO BE HELD IN MARYLAND SEPTEMBER 5TH
"AtlantiCage Ninety-seven^85: A Birthday Circus for John Cage" will be
presented on September 5th, 1997 at 8 PM at the Tawes Fine Arts
building on the campus of the University of Maryland at College Park.
The event is free and open to the public.
The celebration, organized by members of "Silence: The John Cage
Internet Mailing List", will include performances and reading of
works by Cage, as well as performances inspired by his work and life.
In keeping with his principles of peaceful anarchism, the event will
include simultaneous performances of different works, as well as
related visual and sound events. It is presented as part of the
worldwide "Freedom Summer" series in conjunction with the Pauline
Oliveros Foundation.
The event will begin on the brick stage on the north side of Tawes

For the official map, see the University web page at

the Southwest Quadrant.
For alternate directions, see

By Car:
The University of Maryland sits right in the corner of the
intersection of 193 (University Blvd.) and Adelphi Rd.
From either direction on 495, take the College Park exit
(Rt. 1 south) and head south on Rt. 1 through several traffic lights.
After a few miles, you will see signs for 193 west, which will be a
right exit down a ramp. Take this exit, continue west through one
traffic light. The next traffic light will be Campus Drive, on which
you will turn left and enter the campus. Stay to your right, going
through the traffic circle and keeping to your right. You will go
between the construction for the Maryland Center for the Performing
Arts on your right, and a huge parking garage (behind which is the
stadium) on your left. Soon, you'll reach a second traffic circle,
through which you pass, still staying to the right and going straight.
A soccer field will be on your right, and the next stop sign you get
to, turn left.
The large parking lot that is now to your right is Lot 1,
and Tawes Theatre looks west across it. Park in Lot 1 (it's open to
visitors without a permit after 4 PM on weekdays), and walk
towards the theatre, and you should see us gathering out on a brick
stage in a small courtyard next to the theatre entrance. The main
building entrance is actually on the opposite side of the building,
and the room for the performance (2102) is on the second floor.
By Public Transportation:
The College Park Metro is not really within walking distance of
Tawes; there are shuttles that run from the station to campus, or
you can take a cab. Tawes is at least a mile or two from the
Metro station.
