I'm going to be interviewing Philip Glass in a week; any
questions/topics any nm-listers might want to hear about? I'm short
on points of interest.
I'll post the transcript if anyone is interested.

If it is the case, why do you interview him?

Why interview him even though I'm not the world's biggest Philip Glass
fan? Because he's available and has offered to come to the station;
among other things, to publicize the Bowie symphony.
Truth be told, I'm sure I could do a respectable interview just
winging it, but I thought there might be people out here who follow
Glass more closely than I do, and have some interesting questions.
The result will be available via WWW, so hopefully, what goes around
will come around.

[First, sorry about the large cross-post]
I've posted some artifacts from my shady past on
rec.music.industrial and rec.music.marketplace.cd for sale. It
contains stuff like old Cabaret Voltaire, Coil, Monte Cazzaza,
Chris Carter (of CHris and Cosey), and various other ambient
industrial/noise artists. Check it out. The list runs the
letters A-E - I'll post the rest when this lot has moved to
make the logistics more manageable.
I will also respond to email requests for the list, but
turnaround time will be s-l-o-w as I am absolutely swamped
with work these days and as I will give priority to emails
from interested buyers, so I recommend you try usenet first.
Thanks for your indulgence - Ashok

Just a brief note for anyone in the Bay Area who can listen
to KFJC (89.7FM)... Tonight from 10pm-2am I'll be taking over
the noise show from Mr Hate and playing four hours of rare
noise and experimental stuff. Lots of old cassettes and LPs,
probably nothing from CD at all this time. Check it out if
you can.

Date: 06 Mar 1997 23:51:40 +0000
Terry Riley, pioneer of minimalism [infused with strong Indian,
Persian, Asian and Just-Intonation elements] from the '60s to date,
organ/piano/sax player extraordinaire, and one-time John Cale
collaborator, will be performing [solo piano] at nyc's Merkin Concert
Hall (West 67th Street) on Wednesday, 19 March 1997.
Just picked up my tickets tonight, and discovered that ticket sales
have been shamefully slow for the performance.
Everyone in the area should really get their respective yayas over to
the M'Hall and check the show out.
Tiny excerpt from the The Terry Riley Archive Conservation Project
Home Page [http://www.cortical.org/Riley.html]:
Terry Riley, credited as one of the pioneers of Minimalism in the
mid sixties, explored the use of tape loops, developed the time
lag accumulator, performed All Night Concerts (10pm-6am). His
early compositions were performed, for example, by Toru
Takemitsu, and by the experimental music community in England,
including the Scratch Orchestra. While in Paris he worked with
happening director Ken Dewey and composed the music for his play
"The Gift". "Music for the Gift" comprises the Time Lag
Accumulator and the Chet Baker Quartet that recorded for Terry at
Radio France. These tapes circulated to friends of Terry,
including Daevid Allen and Robert Wyatt, who regarded this work
as an important break through at the time.
His solo piano discs are engaging, repetitive, complex, and hypnotic.
I think that this is his first solo performance in over a decade. It
should be most rewarding. Now you know.

I would second this recommendation. I saw Riley perform at a Mortuary (!)
last year on piano accompanied by a sax player (who I could have done
without). They improvised together but really shined when Riley tinkled
the ivories solo. I don't know what you should expect, but what I saw
was pretty different from what I expected...he was mainly doing a sort of
ragtime piano/drone fusion and the piano was in a standard (i.e. not just
intonation) tuning. Being most familiar with his mid-70's releases
("Persian Surgery Dervishes", etc.) and the later "Shri Camel" it was
definitely a different animal for me to hear him in a standard tuning
sans loops and multitracking. The "drone" element wasn't much in evidence,
but his playing was superb. Little bits of past sounds floated through.

Well, too late for y'all now, but you might take note that anyone with
a 28.8 modem and a Java-capable browser can tune into KFJC! Go to
www.kfjc.org and you'll find the link. The interesting thing is that
they're testing a Java-oriented audio streamer -- i.e., this is not with
RealAudio. Unfortunately, the sound cuts out a little more than with
RealAudio, but the quality's generally pretty good. They have a program
schedule on the page too, so you can see when Mr. Hate can be heard (and
other interesting shows, if you can guess them from the titles).
I think it would be a decent idea for people to share any finds of
interesting broadcasting going on over the web. There are a _lot_ of
stations that are now simulcasting in RealAudio, and with RealAudio v.3 and
a 28.8 modem the sound quality is actually pretty decent. One thing I'm
happy to finally be able to hear is Brave New Waves, the venerable Canadian
new music show. It's on every weeknight from midnight to 4am EST. Go to:
http://www.radio.cbc.ca and choose mono/lo-bandwidth or stereo
(high-bandwidth, but still 28.8 capable).
CRUX sometimes has some good stuff, but in more of the
punk/less-experimental alternative stuff: http://www.crux.org/index.htm
IMusic mainly focuses on techno and dialects thereof, but occasionally
has an interesting track or two. Good site and broadcasting format and
layout though. Go to: http://club.imusic.com/
SDF Community NetRadio is sadly out of date and probably dead, but
still has shows online and in a variety of formats. Go to:
http://sdf-radio.colossus.net/
Finally, don't forget TimeCast, the RealAudio directory if you want to
poke around and look for others: http://www.timecast.com/
The great thing is that web-only broadcasters don't have to worry about
the FCC fining them for saying fuck! Finally, uncensored international
broadcasting... as long as you have a $1,500 radio.

Subject: Review: His Masters Voice, "Singing the Boundaries"
Date: 13 Mar 1997 12:11:35 +0000
Just picked up this disc, on a whim, and it is so good that I gotta
pass the word along about it, for fear that it will go unnoticed.
His Masters Voice is a mail-based collaboration between Randy Grief,
Jeph Jerman (Hands To, Blowhole) and R. Kitch (IAM Umbrella). Jerman
supplied a tape containing "14 minutes of material utilizing contact
microphones on wire fencing, overtone singing and bass drum with
rattles."
From the liner notes:
"Jeph's original source material was combined with Randy Greif's
tape material through a series of digital processing treatments
in which common frequencies were emphasized and other
spectral material became audible. The four pieces represented
here are virtual replications of the original source material
combined through diverse non-linear processing, including fast
fourier resynthesis, spectral/mutant crossfades, phase vocoding
of pitch and time and drastic equalization techniques."
The result is a phenomenal melange of sounds that create a constantly
evolving, always engaging, this-worldly-yet-otherworldly sonic
environment.
Yeah, but wot's it _sound_ like? Electronic sounds,
acoustic/modified acoustic percussive sounds, tape splices, musique
concrete. Slowly shifting soundscapes. Imagine yrself lying back in
a rowboat, slowly drifting through the light sequence at the end of
"2001: A Space Odyssey." That's how this disc starts out.
Reminds me, in places, of Lull circa "Journey Through Underworlds,"
albeit more musically "involved." Other reference points: O Yuki
Conjugate, Voice of Eye, K. Leimer, Stephen Stapleton (in terms of
both sound selection and production), Hands To, "Final 2," etc.
Soon, subtle polyrhythms surface, offering a gentle "tribal" feel to
the piece (in fact, the creators' motivations behind the disc have an
(American) Indian theme running throughout them, as explained in the
liner notes). Various related and unrelated sounds are spliced,
cross-faded and interwoven to create the rhythms, which grow in
strength over time. Bright pulses shine momentarily over dark, muted,
brooding percussive backgrounds.
What appear to be (American) Indian chants are infused throughout the
second track, which is highligthed by a Justin Broadrick-like cluster
of clangy notes that sound at once percussive and guitar-like. Again,
layer upon layer of sounds - both percussive and drony - create a
warm, compelling, sonic soundtrack -- the perfect backdrop for
wandering alone forever throughout yr own dark, personal "Old West."
Don't Just Take _My_ Word For It Dept.:
Staalplaat's "Vital Weekly" Number 72 liked it too, calling it "an
amazing collage of ethno-ish rhythms combined with odd sounds that
swirl in and out of the mix."

Date: 13 Mar 1997 18:53:50 +0000
In a surprise initiative, Stirling Council are presenting Death Ambient
at the Tolbooth on Tuesday March 25th at 8pm. From their leaflet:
"Never before seen in Scotland, Death Ambient bring together 3 of the
world's finest and most radical improvisors. Exemplifying the cutting
edge of New York and Tokyo's underground music scenes (having worked
with artists as diverse and eclectic as The Young Gods, Napalm Death,
John Zorn, Fred Frith and Derek Bailey), the trio consists of Ikue Mori
(el. percussion), Kato Hideki (bass) and Jim Plotkin (gtr). Plotkin
conjures up hypnotic and intense industrial soundscapes, Hideki's bass
is dark and visceral, whilst Mori's percussion starts at the point where
the wilder end of drums'n'bass meets serious chaos. Prepare for a night
of inventive and wild new music."

I hope anyone who can come along does. This is the sort of initiative
that central Scotland has been lacking for many years and needs support.

years ago, also in the Tolbooth.)

It also appears on the Maya Beiser cd of cello music by Gubaidulina
and Ustvolskaya (Koch, 1194,3-7258-2 H1). The cd has _In Croce_ plus
ten Gubaidulina preludes (excellent) and Ustvolskaya's _Grand duet
for cello and piano_. Truthfully, I think _In Croce_ is the weakest
piece on the cd, but I highly recommend it.
Can anyone reccomend a good Suskin cd? I have not heard anything

Well, now that you mention it, KZSU (90.1 FM at Stanford)
has been broadcasting on the web for years, and recently
we've even started using the more or less standard RealAudio
format. Previously we were just using the somewhat odd but
free (in the GNU sense) Cyber Radio, which I keep meaning to
play with some time just to tune into WREK.
Anyway, the details are available at:

Welcome aboard, KFJC.
Oh, and by the way... if I were going to recommend just one
show on KZSU that might be of some interest to "New Music"
people, the first thing I would think of is Strick's show
"Different Trains", on Fridays, 11 AM to 2PM (Pacific
Standard Time).
And the second thing I would think of would be to recommend
tuning in any time at all on Thursday, April 3rd, for the
"Day of Noise": twenty-four hours of improvised sound. But
more about that later.

hi nm-lers! this is forwarded from the
Mostly Improv Coffee Clatch mailing list from miles.engr.sgi.com
Originator: micc@miles.engr.sgi.com
Precedence: bulk
Probably most record companies have given up, but I like to bring up this
subject and see what we can do about it by joining forces in the improvised
music world.
In november 1994 IMPETUS has ordered for around $700 of cd's from us on a
30 days payment invoice. After 3 months I started sending them friendly
faxes, asking them to pay that invoice, or, if they had problems doing so,
they could contact us, so we could talk about a solution. No reaction. When
I called up to talk with them I allways get their answering machine, so I
get the impression that they never pick up that phone, to avoid
confrontations with record companies asking for their money. Over the year
my faxes became more angry, and after we told them we will inform other
people in the improvised music world about it, the owner Paul Accott
Stephens finally reacted with a fax that they were very sorry, and would
pay the first half now and send a cheque for the other half the next month.
We got the first half of the money and then the whole thing continued, they
didn't answered faxes anymore. Two weeks ago I have sent them a last
warning, that we will take action if they don't pay.
After having patience for 2 1/2 years we have enough of it.
The whole thing makes me very angry, not so much about the money we are
loosing, but in the first place because they misuse the trust and good will
people have in this friendly scene. If IMPETUS behaves like that, and make
no step to change their attitute, I think we should fight against them.
I know many other record companies have the same problems with them.
Lets join forces!
Since there is only a small amount of money going on in this music we are
not going to sue them, and they know that. But we can do other things:
1. Maybe record collectors can sent them a fax : 441 851810809, telling
them that they will stop ordering cd's from them and will get them somewere
else (even if you have never ordered from them that could be a good idea to
scare them).
2. Maybe we can arrange an unanounced visit at Paul Accott's adress, to
collect the money and/or demant the unsold cd's back. I am even willing to
come to England for that...
3. Can anyone get Paul Accots privat number, so I (we) can phone him and
talk directly with him? They seem to have moved to an other adress. Does
anybody has their adress.
Does anybody else have any other idea what to do with them?
Sorry that I have to be MEAN! It's not about money, it's about trust!
Please send this email around.
