Subject: Ondes Martenot?
Date: 03 Apr 1996 15:54:53 -0800
I originally sent this 4/3/96 but not sure if it got lost. Sorry if this
shows up twice.
(pardon the liberal plagiarism)
In the March 31 L.A. Times Calendar section there is an article by
Stuart Cohn on the ondes martenot, an early electronic keyboard which was
invented in 1928 by Frenchman, Maurice Martenot. The article sez that its
"greatest feature is its ethereal approximation of the human voice, albeit
a voice capable of superhuman strength and power." The instrument is
decribed as similar to a theremin but "much more versatile and precisely
controlled." Apparently, this device had been used for generating sound
effects in addition as an orchestra piece.
The story is also on interview with Cynthia Millar who is the
featured ondiste for a performance of the Turangalila Symphony by Olivier
Messiaen at the Dorothy Chandler (4/4-6.) She states that it has been used
in the soundtracks to many movies. These include Heavy Metal(!),
Ghostbusters, The Age of Innocence, and The Grifters, all of which I've seen
but I don't recall anything about them, except Heavy Metal. I have the
soundtrack to Heavy Metal but it consists of the full length versions of
the hard rock songs which are featured in the movie and not the score (I
don't remember a score, it's been a long time since I've seen it--guess I
have to catch the rerelease.)
The upshot is that the ondes martenot sounds like a fascinating
noisemaker and I wanted to fish for recommended and easy to find recordings
that feature it. I don't know if I just have to look under the "Ondes
martenot" section of the nearest Tower but since I just read this, have
never heard of it, and am lazy as hell, I'd like to get some comments from
youse. Lastly, is the Turangalila Symphony worth checking out? The
article states that Pierre Boulez has called it "bordello music." Is that
a recommendation? TIA, b----

Boulez is an asshole. The Turangalila Symphony is a marvelous work, and
runs the gamut of Messiaen's expression: thunderous, crashing chords in
the brass, woodwind parts reminiscent of birdsong, odd harmony, and
stunning coloristic effects. Boulez should be such an orchestrator!

Does anyone have any idea how to get in telephone contact with Tilbury,
Prevost & Rowe? I'm trying to bully an editor at one of the Los Angeles area
alternative newsweeklies into running a preview of their upcoming
performances, and would like, if possible, to get in some kind of short
interview. Any help would be much appreciated.
