I loved the reference in "Chicken Run" to Steve McQ being in the cooler
and bouncing the baseball against the wall.
BTW, the reason the prisoners were trying to escape was to cause trouble
for the Germans. For example, if they are trying to round up prisoners of
war
(or guard them), they cannot be on the front line, fighting the Allies.
One of the characters (the British officer) even had a bit of dialog:
"...You know that it is an officers duty to try to escape, and try to cause
as
much trouble for the enemy as possible..." (paraphrased)

Subject: [MV] Weird films !!
Earlier today I saw "Brazil" - 1985 for the first time ...
Wow, very good film but it is so hard to describe it ...
I think it is one of the most bizarre films I have seen ...
3.5/5 Set in the future, incredible sets, visuals.
A guy has weird dreams about being a sort of flying knight,
he has to rescue a beautiful princess from some evil dudes
... Then he wakes up and one day he sees a girl that looks
just like the princess, only she has shorter hair ...
De Niro appears as a weird guy who fixes the air
conditioning system, only he's acting more like the member
of a SWAT team ... I know this description makes no sense
... just like the movie ! lol !
I still liked it a lot, very weird and bizarre though !
Dark humor is used often. Terry Gilliam directing (12
monkees)
Here's my list of bizarre movies !! Top 5, off the top of
my head !!
- - Blue velvet 3.5/5
- - Lost highway 3.5/5
- - Twin peaks : Fire walk with me 3.5/5
- - The Rocky horror picture show 3.5/5
- - Brazil 3.5/5
Bye !

Subject: [MV] Thirtheen days - 2000
Alright, I watched this film, I thought it was very good
material in general. 3.5/5 Based on a true story of
course, in 1962 Russians setting up some nuclear missiles
in Cuba, creating "Issues" for the US and everyone else of
course.
Great acting, story, dialogues ... Following the
negotiations as they are trying to avoid WWIII.
I have to substract a lil' something due to the excessive
running time, a few repetitive scenes ... but in general
it was quite good. Roger Donaldson directing ...
I was slightly annoyed by Kevin Costner in the film, not
because he is a minor repellent as I think in the movie he
was alright, it was mostly because of his fake accent that
was coming and going all the time throughout the film. Now
I imagine it is hard to talk with an accent unless your
first name is Meryl and your last name is Streep.
Costner was doing his best but it was terrible, one scene
he would have a big accent and the next one it would be
gone almost completely, even sometimes at the beginning of
a scene he would have it and the lose it along the way ...
slightly embarassing and bizarre ...
Why have thrown in this GIMMICK anyway ?? I don't care if
the real person his character is based on had an accent or
not, it's only a detail ... he could have spoken with his
real voice and that would have been fine, anyway it's just
something that I was thinking of while watching the film
...
Overall it was a really good drama, lots of tension, quite
talkative of course but that was expected. This serious
film should be in my Top 25 for 2000.
bye !

Subject: [MV] Wait until dark - 1967
This was a very good thriller, 3.5/5.
Audrey Hepburn plays a blind woman living in NYC. Her
husband just came back from Montreal (WooHoo, not too far
from here !) and he brought a doll with him along the way,
a woman he met on the plane gave it to him to keep
temporarely, she says she will come back later on to get it
...
I know I know, sounds bizarre ! lol ! Well, I suppose
they had to find a way for the doll to end up in that
apartment or else, no movie !
Well, the husband brings back the doll but soon it
disappears, no worries I won't reveal any spoilers here.
Of course this is not an ordinary doll, some kind of
illicit substance (drugs ?) was hidden inside it and the
woman only gave it to Hepburn's husband because she spotted
some baddies who were waiting for her at the airport ...
They then try to recover the doll from Hepburn while her
husband is away thinking it must be hidden somewhere in the
apartment and that she is only pretending she doesn't know
where it is.
It also stars Alan Arkin and Richard Crenna ... pretty good
acting in general, especially by Ms. Hepburn that is
impressive as the blind woman, her handicap really
increases the tension level because all the time we know
that she is in the dark and that people around her are
playing games and could hurt her at any time ... The ending
is excellent, turning the table on the crooks in a very
clever way too.
3.5/5

I think it was an excellent movie but nowhere near as good as the role
played by Lee Remick on Broadway.

.. something we had not seen previously so much in the
other films.

was maybe a lil' bit too much of "Julianne Moore listening
to audio tapes" scenes ...

**** Apparently there is an alternate ending on the DVD and
it makes more sense, so far I heard of a couple of people
who said they preferred that ending over the one that made
it in the film ... also plenty of deleted scenes, 40-45
minutes of material that should really have made it in the
movie for the most part, wouldn't feel so disjointed
probably.

**** Yes, Moore is also a great actress and she does her
best here but that character was a lot more intriguing in
"Silence..."

**** Good point there, yes, that is true ! I guess the
scenes where he gets Moore all mixed up and confused witha
mix of drugs and suggestions ended up on the cutting room
floor ... bummer !

**** hehe !! Well, sometimes they release a director's cut
at the same time as the "butchered" movie "Requiem for a
dream" for example ... I would like the longer version of
this film more probably.

**** Yes, and Hopkins says he can't wait another 10 years,
I mean, he's not exactly a Spring Chicken ... ;-) Moore
should be in the remake of Manhunter as well apparently.

do that fairly soon, I have high expectations since
everyone likes it basically ... lol !

I just saw this film last night and it was a really wild
ride, My score is 4.5/5 so it should certainly be in my top
5 for 2000, right not it's in #2. ;-)
I don't understand ANYTHING that happens but I still loved
it, lol !! Well, I am exaggerating but this film is highly
confusing, all sorts of twists and turns, not knowing who
is lying and who is not, great ending as well, I was often
close to going up to 5/5, it might be a case of a film that
is better on a 2nd viewing though because you understand
more of what is going on ...
All those characters and the
"starting-at-the-end-and-going-back" gimmick was really
intriguing ... A man trying to solve the rape and murder of
his wife after being hit over the head, he is not able to
remember anything that happened more than 2-3 minutes ago
...
The whole time I kept thinking how it was such a quality
film and that you needed to pay attention all the time or
else you could miss something important ... Great acting by
everyone involved : Guy Pierce, Joe Pantoliano, Carrie Anne
Moss, editing, dialogues, script, sound, direction, etc.
It's nearly perfect IMO.
A neat final twist, turning the tables ... making you
wonder what has just happened, certainly intriguing !
Check it out ! Highly recommended !
Bye !

Oh, Marc, I knew you would love this movie. And as for still not being
sure what is going on, I think that is what they were going for. I have
looked at some of the discussion boards (including IMDb), and it is obvious
there are as many answers to that question as there are people watching the
movie.
As for the second viewing being crucial, I agree, but I have also heard the
argument that this movie is similar to The Usual Suspects in that, once you
see the ending, the innocence is over, and you can't bring back that feel
of discovery as all is revealed. (Unless, of course, you were able to
forget, like Guy Pierce's character:-) ). Then again, I have watched Usual
Suspects three times, and find more and more to ponder each and every
time. I think this movie will hold up on repeated viewings, as well.
I have some things to watch for (mostly gotten from those discussion boards
I mentioned), but am loathe to even think of putting SPOILERS in
here. There is just too much chance of ruining the beginning of the movie
(which is where the real mystery is here, in how it begins, not in how it
ends) for someone.
Marc, if you want to know a few of the things that might have escaped you
(I caught one, but just downplayed it to faulty memory - which is what the
director wanted - or a simple mistake, but some of the others escaped me),
contact me off-list. Same for anyone else that saw this. (If you have not
seen it yet - then what are you waiting for???:-)

Requiem for a dream ... Memento could be even better the
2nd itme around though, so maybe I should watch both of
those again to determine which one is the best film for me
! ;-)

whole time I was highly intrigued of course ... You can see
right from the get go that this will be a really great
film.

forgetting what happened ... or before ... not sure ! ;-)

***** Yes, The usual suspects, good example ... and I liked
that film more the 2nd time I saw it actually ...

interested in seeing it, someone dissecting the Memento
script really precisely ... I read it and it made me want
to see the film again, I probably will within a week or two
! ;-)

***** Sure, I am curious to know what you found out ... It
is a film that is complicated to discuss though as I am not
even sure what is going on in part, lol !

***** I thought this film was excellent ... 4/5 ... I agree
it goes over the top near the end though, even if I don't
like the ending so much it's still a great thriller ...
Scorsese & De Niro teaming up .. how can you go wrong ??
Jessica Lange, even that lil' Juliette Lewis ... I know a
lot of people hate her but I think she picks some
intriguing roles in general ... Strange days, What's eating
Gilbert Grape come to mind ...
All of this

**** Oh yeah ... Bowden !! Remember the SPOOF on THE
SIMPSONS ?? Wow, that was a CLASSIC !! ;-) Also, "The
shinning" episode.
He becomes increasingly uneasy when Cady begins

**** Loved it how De Niro was toying with him ... hehe ...
he was quite scary in that one, like the scne where he
beats up the three thugs and then screams at Bowden hiding
behind a trash can ... ;-)

***** Yes, I appreciate Nolte's performance as well ...
This is a STAR POWERED film, and you have an excellent
story, director, etc.

***** Yeah, Illeana Douglas ... always good supporting
roles .. To die for, Alive ... and company ...
Turning to the law, Bowden is stunned to

***** I agree technically it is quite impressive ... and
Scorsese made 3 of my top 5 films of all times ...
Goodfellas, Taxi driver and Casino ... plus several other
great films as well ...

***** I didn't really buy that part, the sexual tension
between De Niro and Lewis ... but anyway ... she was also
acting more like a 12 year old sometimes ... how old was
she in the script ?? Int he original film from the 60's it
was a lil' girl playing that part, about 12 years old ...
but Lewis was at least 16 back then ?

would have been more appropriate perhaps ...
