  41. I loved the reference in "Chicken Run" to Steve McQ being in the cooler
  42. and bouncing the baseball against the wall.

  44. BTW, the reason the prisoners were trying to escape was to cause trouble
  45. for the Germans.  For example, if they are trying to round up prisoners of
  46. war
  47. (or guard them), they cannot be on the front line, fighting the Allies.
  48.  
  49. One of the characters (the British officer) even had a bit of dialog:
  50. "...You know that it is an officers duty to try to escape, and try to cause
  51. as
  52. much trouble for the enemy as possible..."  (paraphrased)

  130. Earlier today I saw "Brazil" - 1985 for the first time ...
  131. Wow, very good film but it is so hard to describe it ... 
  132. I think it is one of the most bizarre films I have seen ...
  133. 3.5/5    Set in the future, incredible sets,  visuals.
  134.  
  135. A guy has weird dreams about being a sort of flying knight,
  136. he has to rescue a beautiful princess from some evil dudes
  137. ... Then he wakes up and one day he sees a girl that looks
  138. just like the princess, only she has shorter hair ... 
  139.  
  140. De Niro appears as a weird guy who fixes the air
  141. conditioning system, only he's acting more like the member
  142. of a SWAT team ... I know this description makes no sense
  143. ... just like the movie ! lol ! 
  144.  
  145. I still liked it a lot, very weird and bizarre though ! 
  146. Dark humor is used often. Terry Gilliam directing (12
  147. monkees)

  182. Alright, I watched this film, I thought it was very good
  183. material in general.  3.5/5   Based on a true story of
  184. course, in 1962 Russians setting up some nuclear missiles
  185. in Cuba, creating "Issues" for the US and everyone else of
  186. course.  
  187.  
  188. Great acting, story, dialogues ... Following the
  189. negotiations as they are trying to avoid WWIII.
  190. I have to substract a lil' something due to the excessive
  191. running time, a few repetitive scenes ... but in general 
  192. it was quite good.  Roger Donaldson directing ...
  193.  
  194. I was slightly annoyed by Kevin Costner in the film, not
  195. because he is a minor repellent as I think in the movie he
  196. was alright, it was mostly because of his fake accent that
  197. was coming and going all the time throughout the film.  Now
  198. I imagine it is hard to talk with an accent unless your
  199. first name is Meryl and your last name is Streep.  
  200.  
  201. Costner was doing his best but it was terrible, one scene
  202. he would have a big accent and the next one it would be
  203. gone almost completely, even sometimes at the beginning of
  204. a scene he would have it and the lose it along the way ...
  205. slightly embarassing and bizarre ... 
  206.  
  207. Why have thrown in this GIMMICK anyway ??  I don't care if
  208. the real person his character is based on had an accent or
  209. not, it's only a detail ... he could have spoken with his
  210. real voice and that would have been fine, anyway it's just
  211. something that I was thinking of while watching the film
  212. ... 
  213.  
  214. Overall it was a really good drama, lots of tension, quite
  215. talkative of course but that was expected.  This serious
  216. film should be in my Top 25 for 2000.

  242. This was a very good thriller, 3.5/5.

  244. Audrey Hepburn plays a blind woman living in NYC.  Her
  245. husband just came back from Montreal (WooHoo, not too far
  246. from here !) and he brought a doll with him along the way,
  247. a woman he met on the plane gave it to him to keep
  248. temporarely, she says she will come back later on to get it
  249. ... 
  250.  
  251. I know I know, sounds bizarre !  lol !  Well, I suppose
  252. they had to find a way for the doll to end up in that
  253. apartment or else, no movie !
  254.  
  255. Well, the husband brings back the doll but soon it
  256. disappears, no worries I won't reveal any spoilers here.
  257.  
  258. Of course this is not an ordinary doll, some kind of
  259. illicit substance (drugs ?) was hidden inside it and the
  260. woman only gave it to Hepburn's husband because she spotted
  261. some baddies who were waiting for her at the airport ...  
  262.  
  263. They then try to recover the doll from Hepburn while her
  264. husband is away thinking it must be hidden somewhere in the
  265. apartment and that she is only pretending she doesn't know
  266. where it is.
  267.  
  268. It also stars Alan Arkin and Richard Crenna ... pretty good
  269. acting in general, especially by Ms. Hepburn that is
  270. impressive as the blind woman, her handicap really
  271. increases the tension level because all the time we know
  272. that she is in the dark and that people around her are
  273. playing games and could hurt her at any time ... The ending
  274. is excellent, turning the table on the crooks in a very
  275. clever way too.

  368. it makes more sense, so far I heard of a couple of people
  369. who said they preferred that ending over the one that made
  370. it in the film ... also plenty of deleted scenes, 40-45
  371. minutes of material that should really have made it in the
  372. movie for the most part, wouldn't feel so disjointed
  373. probably.

  1099. ride, My score is 4.5/5 so it should certainly be in my top
  1100. 5 for 2000, right not it's in #2.  ;-)

  1102. I don't understand ANYTHING that happens but I still loved
  1103. it, lol !! Well, I am exaggerating but this film is highly
  1104. confusing, all sorts of twists and turns, not knowing who
  1105. is lying and who is not, great ending as well, I was often
  1106. close to going up to 5/5, it might be a case of a film that
  1107. is better on a 2nd viewing though because you understand
  1108. more of what is going on ... 
  1109.  
  1110. All those characters and the
  1111. "starting-at-the-end-and-going-back" gimmick was really
  1112. intriguing ... A man trying to solve the rape and murder of
  1113. his wife after being hit over the head, he is not able to
  1114. remember anything that happened more than 2-3 minutes ago
  1115. ... 
  1116.  
  1117. The whole time I kept thinking how it was such a quality
  1118. film and that you needed to pay attention all the time or
  1119. else you could miss something important ... Great acting by
  1120. everyone involved : Guy Pierce, Joe Pantoliano, Carrie Anne
  1121. Moss, editing, dialogues, script, sound, direction, etc. 
  1122. It's nearly perfect IMO.  
  1123.  
  1124. A neat final twist, turning the tables ... making you
  1125. wonder what has just happened, certainly intriguing !

  1243. sure what is going on, I think that is what they were going for.  I have 
  1244. looked at some of the discussion boards (including IMDb), and it is obvious 
  1245. there are as many answers to that question as there are people watching the 
  1246. movie.

  1248. As for the second viewing being crucial, I agree, but I have also heard the 
  1249. argument that this movie is similar to The Usual Suspects in that, once you 
  1250. see the ending, the innocence is over, and you can't bring back that feel 
  1251. of discovery as all is revealed.  (Unless, of course, you were able to 
  1252. forget, like Guy Pierce's character:-) ).  Then again, I have watched Usual 
  1253. Suspects three times, and find more and more to ponder each and every 
  1254. time.  I think this movie will hold up on repeated viewings, as well.

  1258. here.  There is just too much chance of ruining the beginning of the movie
