  62. didn't do that ... ;-)

  74. uniform in the movie ... apparently he is competing in the
  75. costumed pets category ... I think that was the same cat we
  76. see at the end, maybe he died during filming, scared to
  77. death by those people dressed as KLINGONS !!  Do you
  78. remember the Klingon people going to that fast food
  79. restaurant in costumes ?? and then they question the
  80. employee and he says it's not the first time he served
  81. Klingons !!! lol !! I couldn't believe it !!

  294. makes people think of the captain in the Giligan's island
  295. TV show, giggling, etc. ... It works only if the film is a
  296. wacky comedy, not a serious drama ...  also .. Captain
  297. Crunch, not a good thing to think of cereals when you read
  298. a title.

  301. clearly an italian name ... now you know that Joe six-Pack
  302. moviegoer sees the word Corelli and thinks ... "Oh no, not
  303. another Godawful foreign film, I couldn't even sit through
  304. Life is beautiful and that was supposed to be good, damn it
  305. !! ... one "foreign film" in 2 years that's my limit, 
  306. I have to put my foot down now !! " ... Remember I am
  307. pretending I am a regular Joe Six-Pack moviegoer here, so
  308. it means I hate anything "Foreign" and "Artsy-Fancy", I
  309. only like very simple films that require very little
  310. *thinking*, who wants to think at the movies !!

  312. And then ... to top it off ... you have "Mandolin" ...
  313. clearly an ARTSY-FANCY musical instrument ... now no real
  314. Joe Six-Pack american moviegoer would play a mandolin, Joe
  315. Six-Pack doesn't even know what a mandolin is ... 
  316. He thinks it's used to shovel dirt or sumthin' .. .you know
  317. "Look at Joe shoveling using that mandolin, wow, he's sure
  318. working hard ... slow down !!"

  320. So this is why "Captain Corelli's mandolin" is one of the
  321. worst movie title of the year.

  428. This was a pretty good film noir about a young man who is
  429. an architect.  He has the perfect life when the film
  430. begins, works with a partner in his own small company,
  431. pretty wife, wee daughter, nice house, drives a Jaguar ...
  432. The only thing missing is a dog and a fence with white
  433. pickets around his property.  
  434.  
  435. This doesn't last long of course as within minutes he
  436. learns that his partner has been giving money to city
  437. officials under the table to get some contracts for the
  438. company.  The problem is the partner is a goof-ball (hehe
  439. !) and he did a sloppy job ...
  440.  
  441. It seems way too many people know about these bribes and
  442. this brings a lot of people to try and black mail him or
  443. else they'll reveal everything to the cops, not to mention
  444. the fact a cop is murdered and he could be held accountable
  445. for it due to some weird circumstances ... Talk about a bad
  446. week !  (This is not really a spoiler since it happens in
  447. the first 15 minutes by the way !)
  448.  
  449. Good lil' film, low budget, I thought it was intriguing all
  450. the way through, some nice twists and turns  ... I like it
  451. mainly because of the story, the acting is sub par by
  452. everyone except maybe Donald Sutherland who is amusing as
  453. one of the black mailers !  Playing games !
  454.  
  455. Some comic relief as he always tries to get the architect
  456. to go to restaurants with him even if he's trying to get a
  457. huge chunk of money with his schemes ... I guess he wants
  458. to remain friends with him when they are done doing
  459. "business" together .. ;-)

  488. Oh man ... is that an addiction film .. or what ??  
  489.  
  490. Top quality material for the most part ... 4/5 ... Jack
  491. Lemmon is a-m-a-z-i-n-g in this film as a young man who has
  492. a major drinking problem ... When the film begins he is
  493. working in "Public relations" for a company.  It basically
  494. means he goes from party to party entertaining clients and
  495. making sure they are happy, good way to get free drinks and
  496. he takes full advantage of it.  
  497.  
  498. One day he meets a nice wee lass (Lee Remick) and they get
  499. together even if she treats him like dirt for a little
  500. while.  That was also another incredible performance.  She
  501. was totally believable and I was impressed by her acting
  502. skills as well.  She also reminded me of a girl I used to
  503. know, only Lee was a bit older in the movie, still the
  504. physical similarities were there ...
  505.  
  506. Soon after they meet, she develops a similar drinking
  507. problem, only worse !  From then on we see how Lemmon deals
  508. with all this ... His own drinking problem, his wife's
  509. (Yes, they get married !) How it affects his life and the
  510. lives of the people around him ... 
  511.  
  512. Top notch acting, dialogues, believable situations ... wow,
  513. it is a very strong 4/5 for me, I was even starting to lean
  514. towards 4.5/5 by the end.  
  515.  
  516. Lemmon is such an ACTOR with a capital "A" ... one scene he
  517. can make you laugh out loud and the next you almost cry
  518. seeing him degenerate into a drunken fool.  
  519.  
  520. One scene where he exits a motel and falls down is totally
  521. believable, it looked "real" ... I'm not even sure he
  522. didn't really fall there and kept in character .... either
  523. way it was something else ... just before that as he is
  524. sitting on the bed looking at yet another empty bottle, 
  525. you can really *see* the pain in his eyes ...

  527. Highly recommended for all SERIOUS movie fans.

  559. This was an excellent documentary about 3 young men accused
  560. of having killed 3 young 8 year old boys in Arkansas in
  561. 1993.  It sure portrays the people living there in a bad
  562. way though, this is not the kind of stuff you see in travel
  563. brochures.
  564.  
  565. The problem is the evidence against this trio is rather
  566. weak ... the BIG piece of evidence is the confession of one
  567. of the accused who is midly retarded and was pushed into
  568. confessing by the police officers, unreliable witnesses, no
  569. blood at the crime scene, coppers losing evidence they
  570. collected, etc.  There is almost no evidence that they did
  571. it yet they are convicted anyway.  
  572.  
  573. One of the accused is mentally retarded and could be
  574. coerced into confessing to just about anything as long as
  575. they leave him alone afterwards ... The other one is very
  576. small for his age, hardly talks and looks like he wouldn't
  577. harm a fly and the 3rd one is a GOTH type, pretty boy that
  578. jokes around even while he's waiting for the jurors to make
  579. up their mind saying he was day dreaming while he was on
  580. the stand when he testified.  
  581.  
  582. Quite intense and gripping as we follow the court
  583. proceedings, get to meet the parents, the families, the
  584. accused and their relatives and friends ... It is all
  585. incredibly detailled too.  
  586.  
  587. The running time is 150 minutes so the filmmakers have
  588. plenty of time to get the "dirt" on everybody, making fun
  589. of some people along the way (Judge chewing gum during the
  590. trial scenes, parents of the victims shooting at pumpkins
  591. that they pretend are the heads of the defendants...
  592. accused combing his hair endlessly and admiring himself in
  593. a mirror etc.)  ... They were digging up evidence and
  594. getting statements from nearly everybody inluding the judge
  595.  : "I wasn't surprised they were convicted ... there was
  596. plenty of evidence ..." ... Yeah ... right !
  597.  
  598. The film is very graphic at times showing scenes from
  599. actual police videos taken at the crime scene for example,
  600. I was thinking it wasn't really necessary actually, all
  601. this while we hear loud Metallica music over the soundtrack
  602. ??  It seemed inappropriate.  The accused were into the
  603. occult and hard rock music so apparently this 
  604. made them prime suspects in that tiny "hick" town ...
  605.  
  606. There is more evidence pointing towards the father of one
  607. of the victims actually ... a rather bizarre fellow who
  608. sure looked suspicious to me and to Joe Berlinger the
  609. director as well.  Hard to believe Berlinger later made the
  610. very disappointing "Blair witch 2 : Hoo Hoo" ... This film
  611. is a lot better and probably cost 5 times less, top quality
  612. documentary.   I believe Mr. Ebert gave this 4/4.

  662. of having killed 3 young 8 year old boys in Arkansas in
  663. 1993.  It sure portrays the people living there in a bad
  664. way though, this is not the kind of stuff you see in travel
  665. brochures.

  668. weak ... the BIG piece of evidence is the confession of one
  669. of the accused who is midly retarded and was pushed into
  670. confessing by the police officers, unreliable witnesses, no
  671. blood at the crime scene, coppers losing evidence they
  672. collected, etc.  There is almost no evidence that they did
  673. it yet they are convicted anyway.  
  674.  
  675. One of the accused is mentally retarded and could be
  676. coerced into confessing to just about anything as long as
  677. they leave him alone afterwards ... The other one is very
  678. small for his age, hardly talks and looks like he wouldn't
  679. harm a fly and the 3rd one is a GOTH type, pretty boy that
  680. jokes around even while he's waiting for the jurors to make
  681. up their mind saying he was day dreaming while he was on
  682. the stand when he testified.  
  683.  
  684. Quite intense and gripping as we follow the court
  685. proceedings, get to meet the parents, the families, the
  686. accused and their relatives and friends ... It is all
  687. incredibly detailled too.  
  688.  
  689. The running time is 150 minutes so the filmmakers have
  690. plenty of time to get the "dirt" on everybody, making fun
  691. of some people along the way (Judge chewing gum during the
  692. trial scenes, parents of the victims shooting at pumpkins
  693. that they pretend are the heads of the defendants...
  694. accused combing his hair endlessly and admiring himself in
  695. a mirror etc.)  ... They were digging up evidence and
  696. getting statements from nearly everybody inluding the judge
  697.  : "I wasn't surprised they were convicted ... there was
  698. plenty of evidence ..." ... Yeah ... right !

  700. The film is very graphic at times showing scenes from
  701. actual police videos taken at the crime scene for example,
  702. I was thinking it wasn't really necessary actually, all
  703. this while we hear loud Metallica music over the soundtrack
  704. ??  It seemed inappropriate.  The accused were into the
  705. occult and hard rock music so apparently this 
  706. made them prime suspects in that tiny "hick" town ...
  707.

  709. of the victims actually ... a rather bizarre fellow who
  710. sure looked suspicious to me and to Joe Berlinger the
  711. director as well.  Hard to believe Berlinger later made the
  712. very disappointing "Blair witch 2 : Hoo Hoo" ... This film
  713. is a lot better and probably cost 5 times less, top quality
  714. documentary.   I believe Mr. Ebert gave this 4/4.

  749. I firmly believe that people commit crimes because they are predisposed to,
  750. not because they are brainwashed to.  The thing some people do not understand
  751. and continue not understanding is they continually blame things other than
  752. themselves for their mistakes.

  754. If you banned heavy metal, violent videogames, violent movies, and the like,
  755. those who are predisposed to commit crimes will find other inspirations to
  756. commit, and you go ban that, that will be inspired by something else.  It is
  757. akin to a cat chasing its own tail.  You will never catch it.  It's an
  758. utterly pointless attempt to bring order into something that has none.  Some
  759. people are just more evil than others, lets accept that fact and more on.

  960. is really scary because the plaintiffs are not seeking censorship, but they
  961. are seeking compensatory damages based on the marketting of "adult material"
  962. to children... if they win, the consequences could be far-reaching....

  964. There are some great interviews with the stepfather of one of the victims...
  965. and some interesting revelations about him and his wife....

  1280. Wow, this movie is amazing, 5/5 ... and I haven't given
  1281. that score to any movie since "American beauty" in 1999 ...
  1282. around 2 years.
  1283.  
  1284. I thought it was incredible, very scary, well, it's a "5"
  1285. so I think it is perfect basically ... What an ending too,
  1286. so powerful and appropriate.  
  1287.  
  1288. Two amazing horror films were made in 1980, "The shining"
  1289. and "The changeling" ... both are 5/5 films for me, both
  1290. are extremely effective, both are in my Top 20 favorite
  1291. films of all times.
  1292.  
  1293. "The changeling" tells the story of a man, George C. Scott,
  1294. he recently lost his wife and daughter (Wife ?? At first I
  1295. would have thought she was his daughter, she looks 25-30
  1296. years younger, anyone agrees ?!)  and then moves away to
  1297. try to get his life back on track.  
  1298.  
  1299. He is a music teacher and must find a home to live in. 
  1300. There is this big abandoned mansion that is nearby and 
  1301. he decides it's a good idea to move there, especially
  1302. considering there is a nice piano in the living room
  1303. included so he can practice and compose his music in peace.
  1304.  
  1305. The problem is the house is haunted by a ghost. Wow, I
  1306. won't give too much away but there are numerous CREEPY
  1307. moments, and they are not flashy ones for the most part ..
  1308. Very subtle, no artsy fancy special effects either ...
  1309.  
  1310. This is the type of horror films that is a lot more
  1311. effective than others filled with CGI stuff that is
  1312. impressive but not as DISTURBING because you know those 
  1313. are *only* special effects after all ... 
  1314.  
  1315. I couldn't take it almost in part, there's a scene where 
  1316. we see a ball rolling down the stairs (the house is huge
  1317. and there is a long staircase) and that is the moment I
  1318. actually thought for the first time ... wow ... "This is
  1319. such a "5" !  It was creeping me out just like when I watch
  1320. "The Exorcist. Part. 1" ...
  1321.  
  1322. There are some similarities with "Stir of echoes"  (Kevin
  1323. Bacon) as well, but this one is a lot more effective and
  1324. powerful not to mention the ending that is a lot more
  1325. satisfying here ... George C. Scott is always a pleasure to
  1326. watch of course and is quite good here as usual.
  1327.  
  1328. Plenty of disturbing scenes, objects moving by themselves,
  1329. weird noises, ghostly encounters, doors banging, psychic
  1330. session that gives you the "willies" (Is that a word ?) 
  1331. ;-) ... all that plus a great murder-mystery to solve as
  1332. well ... Loved it.

  1334. A "must see" if you like SCARY MOVIES.

  1363. Oh man, I don't see a new 5/5 film for 2 years and now 
  1364. I have just seen a 2nd one in just a few days ... "The
  1365. Changeling" and now "Insomnia" ...
  1366.  
  1367. This is an incredibly good film, I was reminded of 
  1368. "A simple plan" in part, but I think this one is just
  1369. slightly better (Even if I also gave 5/5 to "A simple plan"
  1370. ... Small budget film, in Swedish with english subtitles
  1371. ...
  1372.  
  1373. Stellan Skarsgard plays a Swedish detective who is asked to
  1374. go to Norway to investigate the murder of a 16 or 17 year
  1375. old girl ... She was found at a dumping site ... Really
  1376. good material there handling the police investigation,
  1377. clues, etc.   
  1378.  
  1379. Soon Stellan finds the girl's back pack and this leads him
  1380. to think of setting a TRAP for the killer, broadcasting on
  1381. TV that they have found the girl's body and that her
  1382. backpack is missing, saying it contained some important
  1383. information and that if anyone knows where it is they
  1384. should contact the police immediately ... 
  1385.  
  1386. The trick is he doesn't want the killer to know that he
  1387. found the back pack already, he wants the killer to go and
  1388. look for it near where he picked up the girl possibly
  1389. thinking there is evidence in it he has overlooked ... and
  1390. then they only have to wait quietly in the background
  1391. waiting for the murderer to go back and get it ...

  1402. This set up actually works but then a horrible accident
  1403. happens and Skarsgrad accidentally ends up shooting his

  1407. This leads him to lie and lie and lie again to cover his
  1408. tracks, all this while trying to continue the ivestigation
  1409. ... and the worst part (or best !) is the killer knows he
  1410. is responsible for his partner's death, 
  1411. so this is like a chess game, they both have something on
  1412. each other so Stellan is kind of a double agent there ..
  1413. *Pretending* he is doing his investigation but he's really
  1414. trying to pin the murder on someone else to avoid the real
  1415. killer's threat to reveal everything he knows and ruining
  1416. his career ... Wow ...

  1429. is my kind of movie, dark, twisted, clever ... etc.  The
  1430. americans bought the rights and will remake it, will be
  1431. released in 2002 apparently.
