I really HATED this teen comedy. 1/5 !! It would make it
on my list of most awful films in any year basically.
Drew Barrymore plays a so-called journalist who goes
undercover in a high school to write articles about the
student life. We hardly get to see any of her articles and
I was wondering why the paper would send her there in the
first place ... weeks and months of undercover "work", all
sorts of people involved simply to write only one REAL
article ?? Get real !! This is ludicrous !!
Plus she dresses like a FREAK on her first day and acts
totally inadequate as well, she would be spotted in 2
seconds if this wasn't HOLLYWOOD !! White jeans and a long
white BOA around her neck ?? Please ... only CHER would
dress like that !
The film contains basically every clichΘs in the book and
the teens in that high school are all annoying lil' brats.
Intelligent people are few and far between and they are
seen as "boring" and/or "uncool", big surprise ... it's
cool when you know NOTHING apparently, "image" is
everything there and if you don't know who is Gordie Howe
you are a typical student apparently ... dumb jocks, pretty
girls mistreating her, bla-bla.
David Arquette is so annoying as Drew's brother, he's
supposed to be the lousy brother who comes back to high
school to make people think Drew is REALLY cool ... it's
not even mentioned that he looks like he's 32 years old !
I didn't buy Drew as a nerdy girl either, she was doing her
best though, nice effort in the so-called romance dept.
too, but I just didn't care for her and her character, not
her fault as even if it had starred an actress I liked more
it wouldn't have made any difference. I was cringing often
watching this seriously flawed movie ...
Ebert gave 3/4 to that one ?? Gimme a break, Roger !! He
seems to have a thing for High school comedies, didn't he
also like the recent "Sugar and spice" ?? Also a 3/4 for
"Final destination" ... Roger is losing it ??!! ...
1/5 seems more appropriate !!
I was reminded of the awful "Home fries" also with Drew,
but I think "Never been kissed" is even worse if that is
even possible !!
Next up tomorrow : The faculty - 1998.
Marc ;-)

Apparently "Along came a spider" the new film starring
Morgan Freeman is DOOMED !!
It's a prequel to "Kiss the girls" if I am not mistaken ...
Here are some comments made by the people involved, imagine
people talking like that at a press junket ... You have to
appreciate their honesty !!
Morgan Freeman : "I did it for the money ..."
James Patterson (The story is based on his book !) : "They
really messed up the adaptation ..."
Lee Tamahori (Director) : "I was considering pulling out of
the project since the producers were on my case all the
time and I couldn't work in peace ..."

Ok, this movie wasn't so bad, but it wasn't so good either,
2.5/5 ... It was on a downhill in the 2nd half though and
near the end I was hesitating between 2 and 2.5/5 but
decided I should be generous, especially since the teens in
that film were actually smarter than in most movies (Like
"Never been kissed" I just saw recently for example !)
The guys and girls in this movie were geniuses in
comparison !
The movie is set in a high school and students are
worried that their teachers are now ALIENS, having been
contaminated by an organism from outer space that makes
its way to the brains of the victims through their ears,
gross ! They try to deal with this "situation" in the
usual way ... hehe ! Yeah, right ! ;-)
Elijah Wood plays the geeky kid and you know that he'll
turn out to be the hero if you have seen a few of those
teen horror films ! Robert Patrick is also good as the
nasty football coach who is the first alien "victim" !
One of the first things I noticed was how LOUD the movie
was, music blasting in the speakers often, kind of annoying
! At one point they even use "Another brick in the wall"
from Pink Floyd, shame on them ! ... People popping up
behind one of the characters and a LOUD noise is heard to
scare you, etc. It wasn't really frightening anyway
because it was so over-the-top I was laughing in part ...
;-)
Some scenes are pulled right out of other movies, "Aliens",
"The thing", "The hidden" ... only not as effective of
course ... I was kind of shocked at the drug use in this
movie as well. They make it seem cool to take drugs
actually, bizarre ... Supposidely the aliens who take this
particular drug die instantly, some kind of powder that is
sniffed ... so at one point all the members of the group
have to take that drug to prove they are not aliens ... a
bit ridiculous !
The special effects were good though, I liked it when that
alien jumped in the swimming pool, nice work ... but why
was it so DARK all the time near the end ? Bad lighting,
so I couldn't distinguish very well all the details,
reminded me of those strip clubs where the lights are so
dimmed you can't really *see* anything, you can only
*sense* it ... oops .. I mean .. from what I have HEARD !
;-)
Leonard Maltin says : 2.5/4
James Berardinelli says : 1.5/4
I say : 2.5/5, I wouldn't watch it again but it wasn't so
terrible either !
Marc ;-)

Hi !
I saw that film last night, not a whole lot to say about it
either, 2.5/5 ... It's virtually a remake of the original
film and the 1976 film is superior in nearly every aspect
actually.
Unpopular girl with telekynesic (spelling !?) powers is
"tricked" into attending a party by the "pretty people" ...
and then is the victim of a cruel prank, then all hell
breaks lose ... fire, explosions, harpoons, etc.
A bizarre "contest" in the middle of this, football players
getting points when they sleep with underaged girls ?? Oh
please ! Of course they act like jerks ! Those jocks were
getting on my nerves !
I liked the love story with that boy though, just like in
the original "Carrie", how that boy was nice to Sissy
Spacek !
The girl (Emilie Bergl, not sure !) in the lead was ok
though, the other characters kept saying she was ugly, but
I thought she was actually pretty cute myself ! ;-) Her
mom is in an insane asylum and the high school guidance
person (played by Amy Irving !) is doing her best to help
her out ... all of this is very predictable anyway ...
So so special effects, low budget material, loud noise used
to scare us ... t'wasn't really working !
Roger Ebert : 2/4
James Berardinelli : 2/4

We just watched the movie "About Sarah" on Lifetime. It was a wonderful
little movie and everyone in it was great but Mary Steenburgen was an
absolute delight. One of the most charming performances I have ever seen by
an actress. She was nominated for a few awards for this role.
A must see if you can.

Subject: [MV] Armageddon - (Slicin' and Dicin')
**minor spoilers**
Alright, I saw this film last night and thought it was
simply terrible ... 1 out of 5 seems appropriate.
It is hard to find anything positive to say about this film
actually except maybe the special effects and the Aerosmith
music sometimes that were ok ... besides that it was indeed
a disaster.
Awful dialogues, silly characters, sappy la-la story in
part, all the way to the pathetic ending ... ludicrous
story with 101 plot holes and things that don't make sense,
they should have been killed 67 times at least IMO so as
you can imagine I was rolling my eyes back big time, in
fact if I had not been sitting I might have fallen ... hehe
! You stop caring for the characters because it's so "out
there" all the time ... not to mention extremely L_O_U_D !!
Simple story, a huge asteroid will collide with Earth and
destroy everything in 3 weeks or so ... can the americans
save the world ?? hehe !! Everyone on the entire planet
is helpless of course and the best guys to do the job are a
bunch of Yahoos from Hickville, USA ... The relief !! They
need to drill a hole in the bugger, drop the nuke inside
and blow it to kingdom come .. or whatever ...
After the first 30 painful minutes I actually said that I
wish I could use a CATTLE PROD on most of these characters
to SHOCK them back into reality ... getting drunk,
misbehavin' ... ewwwwwwwwwwk !! Who wrote those dialogues
anyway ?? A 10 year old ??
This is totally unfunny for the most part, which is a shame
actually ... why go for the funny bits like that, the film
is supposed to be SERIOUS, hellllllllllo !! Guys, the Earth
is about to be pulverized, I mean come on !!
I think it could actually be good if you chopped off about
65% of the script, mostly the unamusing scenes, and
replaced all that with a good, solid, serious script ...
Food for thoughts ... ;-)
All the actors are at their worst basically ... Michael
Clarke Duncan, Steve Buscemi (somebody unplug that guy !),
the guy who stabbed him last week was probably retaliating
for this mess (Dark humor !) Bruce Willis trying to look
like he cares, Ben Affleck bouncing off the walls, Liv
Tyler showing off her impressive female charms but
certainly not her acting skills, Billy Bob Thornton what
were you thinking ??
Peter Stormare as the crazy russian lunatic ... Shame on
you !! I admit I was cracking up seeing him wearing that
"fargo" hat though in the space station ... I'd like to
have a hat just like that actually ... ;-) I was laughing
cos' the guy had survived for 18 months in this space
station and 10 minutes after the americans arrived it was
completely destroyed ... oops !!
A lil' bit of R.P.P. with those crackers and that car in
the so-called Affleck-Tyler love scene of course but it
wasn't a major concern ...
1 out of 5, at least it didn't cost me a cent to see it and
I even munched on some pop corn ... yum !! ;-) that was
the best part of course ...
Marc ;-)

Subject: [MV] Nurse betty - 2000
Hello !
I watched Nurse Betty last night and thought it was a very
good film. 3.5/5
Story of a soap opera addict (Renee Zelweeger, spelling !)
who is traumatized after seeing her husband killed and
develops this fixation on a "Doctor" in her favorite soap.
She decides to take off and go meet him thinking it's all
REAL ... The killers are in hot pursuit because she left
with a car that contained something they needed to recover.
I thought this was a fairly amusing film for the most part
... Good acting by everyone involved too : Renee Zelweeger,
Morgan Freeman, Greg Kinnear, Aaron Eckardt as the creepy
husband ... I even liked Chris Rock in this part and he
usually is a REPELLENT. Funny one liners ...
The film only loses it a bit in the last 15 minutes or so
... I was hesitating often between 3.5 and 4/5 but with
that ending that is a bit too much on the slapstick side I
have to remain at 3.5
I thought they were pushing it a bit there with Freeman and
his infatuation for the lovely lass. (Why was that twist
necessary ?? Sometimes less is more IMO !)
Marc ;-)

****** Mmmmmmmmm ... I think this movie is very good
myself, I was hesitating often between 3.5 and 4/5 ...
The ending is especially powerful, the last 15 minutes ...
It's a favorite of a friend of mine because she has a lil'
bit of indian blood in her veins and could identify with
some of the things that were happening on the screen ...
intense.
Good acting for the most part, plus you have to feel for
those characters and what they are going through.
You are quite harsh in your comments below, Ms. Barbara, I
recall Siskel and Ebert raving about it on their TV show
too ...
A strange mix of amusing moments and others that are quite
dramatic ... Quite effective overall but this film is
really hard to find anywhere, I couldn't find it for 2-3
years at least and then this girl has a copy of it on her
shelf and says she loves it ... She was surprised I had
heard of it before actually !

- - The party - 1968 (?) with Peter Sellers ...
That film was very watchable but the terrible ending (last
20 minutes or so) make me give it a 2/5 ... it just runs
out of steam IMHO. For the most part I was thinking it had
a shot at a 3/5.
Sellers is funny and memorable as an awful indian actor who
is invited to a party at a big kahuna's house from the
studio ...
Of course nothing goes well and he keeps getting into
trouble ... Directed by Blake Edwards.
Too bad it really takes a nose dive in the last reel
because some parts are quite funny : The "toilet" scene
... Sellers sitting on that miniature chair at the table,
waiter getting drunk ... etc.
Some people say it's one of the best comedies ever but I
guess I am not such a fan of this type of slapstick
material.

I recently watched Some Like It Hot. Not a bad movie at all, I found it

The other night I watched "Out of Africa" (1985) and I
think it's a classic case of a movie that may be of high
quality in terms of acting, dialogues, sets, costumes,
music, visuals ... etc. but that is rather boring anyway
... just because the story is highly uninteresting.
After all the story is the most important part of a movie
so even if all the other aspects are appropriate if the
story doesn't appeal to me it won't make a big difference
...
My rating : 1.5/5, cos' I was just too bored most of the
times despite the movie's obvious qualities as I mentioned
above. If the other aspects of the movie had not been so
impressive I might have given a lower rating of course.
Quite a performance by Meryl Streep though ... Robert
Redford usually annoys me, in this one he was more
endurable.

Hi there !
I watched this comedy again, I had seen it about 10-12
years ago probably ... so-so material IMO but it has sort
of a cult following ... 2.5/5
It wasn't boring at least, well, besides an oh-so obvious
s*b plot about a so-called romance between John Candy's
teenage son and a lil' girlie he meets while on vacation
... (Rolling my eyes back !)
In fact every time the movie was focusing on that "couple"
the same silly elevator music could be heard on the
soundtrack ... after the 3rd time or so I was actually
rocking from side-to-side gently, pretending I was enjoying
the music (The girl watching it with me was laughing so I
guess she was agreeing it was a rather ludicrous twist !)
;-)
Good work in general by the actors involved : Dan Aykroyd,
John Candy, Supporting cast ...
Some jokes are funny like when Candy is waterskiing, those
naughty raccoons hogging food or when Bart-The-Bear jumps
on him near the end ... while others are just unbelievable
or silly so it's a hit-and-miss movie ...
Side note I REALLY enjoyed the ending credits with the song
"Land of a 1,000 dances" and Aykroyd going wild, dancing
and having fun with other cast members ... that was a
highlight ... I mean I was LOVING IT !! ;-)
Unfortunately, I can't recommend the film overall even if
it wasn't awful, cutting a few silly scenes and especially
the "romantic" subplot would have helped ...
2.5/5
Marc ;-)

Alright, here are the films I have seen with him in the
cast. The rating represents my personal enjoyment of the
movie, not what I thought of his performance although I
think he is good in most cases ... ;-)
Chronological order :
- - What's eating Gilbert Grape : 4/5
- - This boy's life : 4/5
- - The quick and the dead : 4/5
(I know this will bring me some "Heat" but I think this
film is excellent and very entertaining !)
- - The basketball diaries : 4.5/5
- - Romeo and Juliet : 1/5 (I couldn't finish it !)
- - Marvin's room : 4/5
- - Titanic : 5/5
- - The man in the iron mask : 2.5/5
- - Celebrity : 2/5
- - The beach : 3/5
Excellent ratings overall except for "Romeo and Juliet" of
course ...
Have a fine day !

Hi !
Today I watched "Scarred city" (1998). 3/5
Low budget film about a cop who is a bit too trigger happy
(Shot 3 bad guys in less than a year !) so he is asked to
become part of a special unit of the police force that
"takes care" of career criminals without worrying too much
about the law ... a-la Dirty Harry basically ... wasting
bad guys and not doing any paperwork, you know the drill
...
I thought it was entertaining for the most part even if the
plot is quite unoriginal since it's the oooooooooooold
lady-in-trouble-rescued-by-an-outlaw-cop trick ... Only
contains material that I had seen before in other films and
or TV shows like "Miami vice" ...
Nice stunts, action sequences, shoot outs, scenes in strip
clubs, etc. So it's definitely a "guy flick" ...
Stephen Baldwin, Chazz Palminteri, Tia Carrere ... the
acting is not so great or memorable ... so-so dialogues and
plot twists but you can't be too picky with such a film !
Marc ;-)

Yeah, it's from 1974. I don't think it's Italian but no doubt we are talking
about the same flick.

****** Why do you say that ?? ;-) Don't you consider
Roger Ebert as one of the top critics out there ?? I
don';t always agree with him but he is not a "hack" in
general !
Out of morbid curiosity, I looked for Rog's

****** Oh good, time to lock horns ! I don;t see why so
many people are saying the Psycho remake was awful, bla-bla
... it was a very good movie overall, 3.5/5 ... I mean
with a nasty story like that how can you make a bad film ?
If you had not seen the original Psycho you would probably
have loooooooooooved this "new" one, no ?? The fact you
had seen the original film influenced you in a negative way
which is not right IMO, each movie stands on its own ...
The 1960 film is a better film but that doesn;t mean the
remake is awful in comparison ! I think you should rent it
and see for yourself ... I saw the new Psycho at the
theater and then the very next day I saw the original one
on video, both are worth watching ! Vince Vaughn, Anne
Heche, Julianne Moore, Gus Van Sant, etc.
I haven't

***** hehe ! ;-) Well, if a movie is good, I don;t
really care if it's a remake, an adaptation, or whatever
... the main thing to consider is : Did you have a good
time while watching that movie ? That should be the only
REAL criteria anyway.

******** Well, as Hollywood runs out of stories and ideas,
you're going to see more and more of those remakes, booooy
!
;-)
but with new vs. old movies

****** Yes, as you know I think it is easier to make a good
film these days due to the technology that is a lot better
than in the good ol' days ... so a lot of these very old
"classic" films would really be more "watchable" if they
were remade today (Ducking !) Good stories + Better
technology would make a lot of them more enjoyable.

***** Well, technology is here to stay so I think it is
futile to think about the good ol' days, bla-bla ... things
will never go back to the way they used to be ... which is
alright for movies anyway, just look at the improvements in
movies over the past 50-60 years ...
Is

****** You;re comparing apples and oranges ... why did you
pick Britney Spears and not a more "respectable" artist ??
It's easy to pick on her due to her limited singing
abilities.

Hi !
I saw this film today ... 3/5. It's nasty though and if
you don't care for movies showing drug use you should stay
away from this !!
Ben Stiller plays Jerry Stahl, a writer who made a lot of
money in the 80's writing stories for the Alf sit com if I
am not mistaken !! Anyway they changed the name of the
program in the movie ...
The problem is that he was spending all the money on drugs
of all kinds basically ...At least he EXERCISED, running
5 milles daily before shooting up in the bathroom at work
!! ...
"Hey I was a junkie but a L.A. junkie so I had to keep in
shape ..."
Character development tale as we follow the guy and how he
slowly but surely gets into more and more trouble due to
his drug addictions. Not for the squimmish in part as when
he injects himself in the neck directly cos' he can't find
a decent vein in his shot up arms ... all this while his
baby daughter is in the car seat next to him ... phew !
Good supporting cast as well : Peter Greene, Elizabeth
Hurley, Janeane Garofalo, Fred Willard (sp. ?) ...
I was thinking 3.5/5 for the most part but the ending is
really on automatic pilot ... it's like they didn't really
know how to end the film so it just *stops* basically ...
interviews on talk shows ??
Bye !
Marc ;-)
