Hi !

I thought this film was good overall even if it was quite
uneven ... For example there would be a scene that would
make me go "wow" and then a minute later another one that
would perplex me ... 3/5 !

It's the story of a young woman played by Monica Keena. She
is playing a girl around 17-18 years old who is finishing
high school.  She wass quite sexy and dressed in
provocative outfits (In fact I thoguht they were pushing it
a lil' with the cleavage shots as no girl would dress like
that IN REAL LIFE, or maybe they would, I haven't been to
high school in a while !)

She has a boyfriend who is a "jock", a football player, and
she is a cheerleader as well.  Her mother (Ellen Barkin)
and stepfather (Michael Ironside) are separating because
Barkin was having an affair with a local merchant.

This creates all sorts of issues in her life of course
because when her mother moves out she remains there and
her stepfather is quite abusive towards her so finally she
decides to kill him with the help of her boyfriend,
scheming, etc.

A young lass is also infatuated with Monica due to her
great beauty and he keeps following her around, acting like
a FREAK, taking pictures of her, sometimes I thought the
movie would have been better without him !

It's a rather smart teen film, quite rare ... I was
reminded of "Election" "Best laid plans" "To die for" and
of course "American beauty" that deals with a somewhat
similar subject matter.

This one is not as good as those other films but if you
liked those I have a feeling you would appreciate "Crime
and punishment in suburbia" as well ... ;-)

The acting was so-so by everyone ... I read a couple of
reviews saying Ironside was "ace" but I thought he was
exaggerating a bit in part, overacting ... The film seemed
also a bit too long even if it lasted only 1 hour 38
minutes.

Hi there !

I just finished watching this film : 2/5

Jamie Foxx plays a small time crooks who gets arrested for
stealing SHRIMPS, that's right ... then when he is being
held in jail he meets this fellow who ripped off a bad guy
after they stole 40M$ in gold in the opening scene ...
(They could have settled for 2-3-4 M$ ?? No ??)

The problem is the fellow is arrested after he made his
getaway and he later dies in jail of a heart attack ...
of course before he "goes" he tells Foxx some priviledged
information about the location of the stolen loot, which he
had time to hide in a very secret location  (When you'll
learn where you'll roll your eyes back big time, let me
tell ya !)

David Morse is an FBI agent who gets the brilliant idea of
implanting a tracking device on Foxx without him knowing
about it.  Morse thinks the bad guy will try to contact
Foxx because he was the last one who had the chance to talk
to his partner before he passed away.  He is using him as a
"bait", hence the title of the film !

So-so material all the way through, funny bits mixed with
action scenes ... I was reminded of "Lethal Weapon"
sometimes .. "Enemy of the State" with Will Smith because
of all the technical mumbo-jumbo and the "visuals",
computer graphics and also "Virtuosity" with Denzel
Washington ! (Same type of artsy-fancy technical stuff
that is not really so effective !)

Nothing really new in there, I was thinking 2.5/5 for the
most part but it kind of loses it in the last third,
turning into predictable and formulaic material that we
have seen on numerous occasions !!

Also at one point a bomb is supposed to go off and the
digital read out is all messed up ... the timer ... For
example we see the timer and it reads "7 minutes 30
seconds", then they cut to the characters in a fist fight
that lasts at least one minute and when they cut back to
the timer on the bomb it says "7 minutes 12 seconds" ...
ruins all the suspense because we know the characters are
all perfectly safe, no way is it ever going off and killing
people, Hollywood is in charge !!  (Remember that happened
in "Goldfinger" as well, haven't they learned anything in
the past 35 years ?!)

The film is also extremely loud in part, music, action,
etc.  and because of this some of the dialogues simply
can't be heard ...

Subject: [MV] The Gift (2000) - Keep the receipt and take it back.

I'll start off by saying that Director Sam Raimi is one of my favourite
directors. He has never been afraid of trying something different,
something diverse and something ingenious. However, The Gift has to be,
along with his previous For The Love Of The Game, one of the most
unnecessary films to grace the screen.

The story follows deep south psychic, Annie Wilson (Cate Blanchett), who
does tarot readings for the backwater folk. However, when she visits her
sons headteacher, Wayne(Greg Kinnear), to discuss problems at the
school, a chance meeting with his fiance Jessica (Katie Holmes), gives
Annie a vision of the future - that of a drowning Jessica - begins a
downward spiral in Annies life. You see, one of the "local people" she
has been reading for is Valerie Barksdale (Hilary Swank) who suffers at
the hand of her bigotted redneck husband Donnie (Keanue Reeves). Death
threats, an attempted human burning and numerous visions try to pep up
the plot - but to be honest with you, you can guess who did the murder
from almost the beginning of the film, and it doesn't even try to hide
it. It's all too obvious by far.

Now I'm sure that writers Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Epperson thought
that they had something really special here, and the annoying thing is
that somewhere hidden deep inside this convoluted dreary tale, there is
the scope for something good. Too many plot devices are thrown in and
thrown away, and ultimately the story does not have enough bite to keep
you gripped for its almost 2 hour running time.

To say it lacks pace is an understatement, almost nothing happens for
the first half hour, and then once the murder has taken place, nothing
of note happens for a long, long time.

The performances are o.k., but nothing out of the ordinary. Blanchett
has very little to work with, and makes the most of it, Reeves is o.k.,
but nothing ground breaking. By far the best performances come from
Giovanni Ribisi as the near psychotic Buddy and Katie Holmes as the
slutty fiance.

Raimi has a lot to answer for, as the director is responsible for
keeping the pace of the movie moving along. He has proved that he can
work outside the fantasy genre with films like A Simple Plan, but this
film just drags and you feel every minute of its running time.

Not recommended, save your money.

Oh, and the twist (not the murderer, but a final twist), was so obvious
most of the cinema groaned when it was revealed.

If you gave 'em to your lil' brother and he cut out half
the images and/or articles, they might not be so
interesting for me !

Please contact me off list if you have a stack of those and
you would want to make a few bucks possibly !

I would prefer to get those from a fellow Canadian citizen
though over someone from ZIMBABWE in order to cut down on
the mailing costs as you can imagine !

I know I could get them directly from the magazine itself
but those capitalist fat cats are jacking up the prices
over there and a lot of the older editions are not
available !!

Subject: [MV] Blair Witch 2 : Hoo Hoo !!

Hi !

I watched this film last night ... my verdict : 2/5 !!

Yes, it was indeed a major disappointment because I thought
the first film was a 4.5/5 and really great.  This one is
just a standard horror film with a few good scary moments
here and there but everything is sub par compared to the
first one, well, besides the budget of course !!

Forget the money, you could have had 100M$ for this one and
it wouldn't make it better anyway, cos' the script is
RE-DI-CU-LOUS !! It's all style and no substance ... good
visuals, editing, sound, etc.  But if the story is highly
uninteresting, then what's the point ?? It's good only on a
technical level, special effects, sound ... as soon as the
characters appear and talk it's a disaster ...

Plus I noticed a bit of R.P.P. as well ... remember that
scene with the take out chicken ... oh yeah, they just
*had* to show that famous box, not once, but twice ... I
found it odd that this GOTH girl didn't throw up actually
!!  I would have liked the footage better than the movie !!


This is what happens when a good independant film makes a
ton of money, Hollywood takes over and ruins it !  This
movie is just like 15 or 20 other so-so horror films that
come out each year, the only twist is that it has Blair
witch sequel written all over it, which is a shame actually
! This material is not one fifth of what the original film
was in terms of intensity for example !

In the original the actors were actually good, especially
Heather, in the sequel they are all awful basically,
overacting often ... but who can look good reciting such
awful lines of dialogues ??  All those nobodies should have
stayed HOME ! Who wrote this stuff ??  SHAME ON YOU !

The first film was a lot more frightening and less gory,
not showing us anything ... in this one we see a hundred
and one lil' clips, people being stabbed, running through
the woods, eating chicken, tied up-tied down-up against the
wall ... anything goes tonight ... reminds me of that Guns
N' Roses song ... ;-)

The story is simple enough and well known so I won't detail
it too much ... 5 silly young adults go in the woods and
then they party, get drunk, play monopoly naked, run around
... and of course they're filming it all, just in case !!
;-)  I was reminded of "The idiots" from Lars Von Trier,
except in that other film they were *supposed* to be idiots
... I guess !

Then they wake up in the morning and are all messed up
wondering what happened ! (DOH !)  We even see paper
falling from the skiiiiies ... awhhhhhhh ... wow, it keeps
falling and falling and falling ... amazing !! People going
nutz and I was laughing !!

They're all weirdos anyway, nobody's normal in that film,
even the coppers look like they have "issues" upstairs !
There's the goth girl (My favorite !  Best line of dialogue
: "I'm gonna get some beer ... " ...)  A cute "witch" with
red hair, wow, running around naked for half the film ??
What's the deal ?? ... a guy who was in a mental
institution and runs a website about the witch, a young
couple doing some research ... bla-bla !

I saw a documentary about a guy looking for BIG FOOT in the
Oregon mountains and it was more interesting than that
anyway ... he was there, filming all night long, trying to
catch a glimpse of BIG FOOT on tape ... that "hairy bugger"
never showed up but I was entertained anyway watching the
guy getting scared at 2am hearing noises, creaking sounds
!! Filming in the forrest !!  Turned out t'was just a damn
raccoon !!

2/5 for BWP2

acting, the script, the dialogues ... The special effects,
sound, and other technical aspects are actually ok ...
that's why it's a shame that it doesn't go anywhere !! Like
a gift box with a beautiful wrapping but when you open it,
it's actually a two-weeks-old chicken dinner from a certain
fast food chain !!  Why did the psycho guy have that in his
fridge anyway ??  Yes, that was RPP in my opinion !! So
conveniently placed, as soon as the GOTH GIRL opens the
door you see it right **there** ... nobody keeps that in
there for more than 2 hours anyway cos' it's a bio-hazard
!!

Hi !

I watched this comedy and thought it was a very good film.
3.5/5  (In fact I was hesitating quite often between 3.5
and 4/5 for this one but decided 4/5 would be a lil' bit
too generous, still a film worth watching of course !)

Well known story and this film was a big hit.  Robert De
Niro's daughter is bringing her boyfriend over to visit and
meet the family and all sorts of problems occur that make
him look like a fool, a jerk, a liar, etc.

Ben Stiller is amusing as the poor sap who's always in
trouble. No matter what he does it always back fires !
Plus De Niro is on his case the whole time, house equipped
with surveillance equipment, ex CIA agent, etc. !

I was laughing out loud maybe 6 or 7 times while watching
this film and I'm not exactly fond of a lot of comedies so
this one was quite effective for the most part.  Reminded
me of "Planes, trains and automobiles" actually, one thing
after the other !  "Analyze this" as well because De Niro
plays a somewhat similar character in both cases ...

PT&A = 4/5
AT = 3.5/5

Good acting, dialogues, funny situations, animal action
(That DARN cat was "ace" !) make watching this film a very
pleasurable experience !

It should be in my Top 20 for 2000, maybe even Top 15 since
that was a rather "weak" year !

Loved that scene near the beginning at the dinner table ...
oh my ... a bit of dark humor ... someone's ashes being
used "improperly" but I was indeed amused !!  ;-)

Hi !  I saw this film for the first and last time
yesterday.
2/5 material, not awful to sit through but nothing I would
want to see again either.  It doesn't look like it aged
very well, like "Ferris Bueller's day off" for example,
quite dated !

John Lithgow plays a scientist working in a lab on some top
secret project for the government ... nuclear weapons,
technical mumbo-jumbo, etc.  The security is surprisingly
LOW-TECH though ... ;-)  Just an old guard who's tricked by
a cute girl ... hehe !

He becomes friends with a lady he visits one day about an
apartment he wants to rent (Lithgow as a hunk ?? Who would
have known !  Suspension of disbelief certainly required
here !)

The lady has a teenage boy (actually he looks more like
he's 20 years old, not 16 ... but I'll let it slide !) and
this wiz kid manages to break in the lab after hours with
the help of his lovely girlfriend.  Of course they then
decide to make a homemade nuclear bomb in the SHED, the
usual !

I didn't buy any of that, the break in, the bomb making,
the lovers-on-the-run, etc.  I s'posed if I had seen this
film when I was 14 in 1986 I would have thought "Wow !" ...
I only wanted to see it now because it's a "minor" classic
...

So-So acting by the "teens", looked a bit fake quite often.
 I was also annoyed by the "afternoon specials" music in
this film ... they keep hammering this elevator muzak,
making me cringe !  (MUZAK MONTAGE !)

Best line by the boy :

"Jenny, I never thought I would say this to anyone ... but
I've got to go take the nuclear bomb out of the car now
..."

;-)

An affectionate 2/5 !

Ok, I just saw "Fools rush in" (1997 ?) with Matthew Perry
and Salma Hayek ... I should send some comments soon about
it ... 2.5/5 ...

I was watching the film and thinking : "Why is Matthew
Perry in that film ??" ... He's simply NOT funny nor
romantic !! Good acting by Hayek to make us believe she was
in looooove with that guy !!

I was wondering what he was doing actually, trying to be
funny and it simply didn't work at all ... making me
cringe, not laugh !!

So here is a list of actors that often appear in comedies
and yet are simply NOT funny nor amusing in my opinion !!

i think mathew perry is an exceptionally funny actor, when he has the right
role to play. he needs more 'chandler'-like roles. the whole nine yards was
hilarious. as for the others you listed, i agree with most of them, but i
love adam sandler...cant knock him. he's goofy and immature whick makes him
funny. anyone else agree with me on adam sandler?

AHhh, I hated this movie!

I know, i know, it's this great comedy people keep telling me,  but it
wasn't fun viewing for me.

It was torturous.  I think I was in the movie theatre, wrapped up in a ball
and my face twisted, I felt so uncomfortable.  I don't think it's funny to
see someone wronged, and put in embarressing situations.

Hi !

The other day I watched "Out of sight" (1998) again and
this time around I thought it was much better.  I had only
seen the film once 3 years ago and at the time I was
thinking 2.5/5, but now I go up to 3.5/5 on a 2nd viewing
which is rare, going up a whole star at once !  The same
thing happened with "Gattaca" that I liked a lot more the
2nd time as well !

Good solid cast too, I remember being annoyed by Clooney
the first time I saw it but I found him less irritating
this time.  Don Cheadle in a good role as "Snoopy" the
gangster ... loved it how he was annoyed that people would
call him that even if he wasn't in jail anymore  ... hehe !
 ;-)  Dennis Farina, Michael Keaton in good small parts ...
This was reminding me of "Get shorty" of course ...

Jennifer Lopez is a lil' Barbie in this film (but she still
kicks some !) and the first time I thought it was
unbelievable that she would fall for Clooney but now it
doesn't seem so far fetched, they have this weird
relationship and I thought it *could* actually happen that
she would really love him  ... Cute scene when they are
locked in the trunk of that car and discuss MOVIES ...
Clooney has his hand on her hip the whole time, but in a
casual way ... quite intense !!

Ving Rhames is solid as usual, you have to laugh watching
this big guy saying he was on the phone for 2 hours with
his sister after having been with a prostitute for 45
minutes ... ;-)  And later Clooney tells him he better go
now because with what is about to go down in that house
he'll be on the phone with his sister for 2 months straight
!!

Excellent script and dialogues, based on an Elmore Leonard
novel, I also loved the soundtrack, great music !
Excellent visuals, camera tricks, Soderbergh having fun
obviously !

Recommended ... even if you saw it already and thought it
was so-so !   3.5/5

After reading the book, I had the chance to see the movie itself.
I noticed a something funny in one of the scenes where Novalee was going
into labor at Wal-Mart. The camera man  accidently let the Mike down too low
and it got caught on screen. careless....but a bit disappointing!
I've seen a lot of best-seller books  made into motion pictures, but this
movie was the worst. I don't know , but something was definitly missing in
the movie. Did anyone notice anything?
Also, I can't help mention that the movie version of"Green Miles", starring
Tom Hanks, was a lot better than the book itself.
Anyone have any comments about this?

**Minor spoiler**  (Jack Black !)

I rented this film even if I really HATED the original and
was pleasantly surprised ... Not that I actually can
recommend this sequel but 2.5/5 ain't bad considering I
gave 1.5/5 to the original.

Nothing really new and original here.  Jennifer Love Hewitt
and her friend Brandi win a vacation to a remote island and
then a stalker slices-and-dices people one by one, seen
that often ! ... Jack Black making an appearance as a long
haired pot smoking dude, sligtly annoying, luckily he
didn't STICK AROUND too much !.

I thought it was scary in part, better than the first one
that was making me laugh !  The acting is so-so all the way
through, but I felt the characters this time around were a
lil' bit more intelligent (Which may not be too hard to
achieve but anyway !)

The whole time while watching ISKWYDLS I knew I was being
"played", Jennifer Love Hewitt walking around with those
tight outfits, white t-shirt, etc.  But it was still better
than the first one that also featured many curveous ladies
and it's worth a look if you have seen all the other horror
films basically (almost !)

(I am in the mood to watch horror films these days, I was
even considering watching "The faculty" (1998 ?) from
Robert Rodriguez ... I need my "FIX" of horror films !)

ISKWYDLS has a Silly ending though !  Falls apart in the
last 15 minutes  but by that time I had been reasonably
entertained anyway ! 2.5/5, not so AWFUL, especially since
it cost me 0.65$US to see it !  (1 canadian $ !)

Subject: [MV] Second skin - 2000

This was a pretty good film, Pulp fiction wannabe (wallaby
!) ...

Thriller/film noir about a man who double crosses a
gangster type (Peter Fonda !) and then the naughty boy has
plastic surgery to change his appearance and tries to go
under cover with the money he stole (2 million $$$) ...
Question : Why would he open an old used book store then ??
 If you try to disappear, wouldn't it be reasonable not to
open a BUSINESS ??  ;-)

Of course Fonda is rather annoyed and hires two contract
killers to go after him (including the lovely Natasha
Henstridge, spelling ??).

That's only the beginning, multiple twists and turns along
the way, double crossings, Mexican stand offs, "Pulp
fiction" is obviously an influence so if you liked that one
it is "possible" you might enjoy "Second skin" as well.
Nice soundtrack too, Pulp fiction-ish !

Bad lighting though, camera work, obviously low budget
material.  Once, a guy ranting and raving, and we can't
even see his face ... cos' it's too dark !  I also disliked
the fact that two very similar looking actors are involved
and at one point I was a bit confused wondering who the
hell was that guy ... until I realized it wasn't the same
one, hehe !

I was also reminded of "Bound" (1996) while watching it but
both "Pulp fiction" and "Bound" are 5/5 films, so this one
is not in the same category but still worth a look.
