  56. It's quite a coincidence that you mention this movie since I saw it again 
  57. just 2 days ago ... I was in the mood for that one as I had not seen it in 
  58. maybe 5 or 6 years. (I would say I have seen the film about 8 times in all)
  59.  
  60. ... Still a 4.5/5 in my opinion !  It's like a rollercoaster ride ... all 
  61. those action scenes
  62. packed in a movie that doesn't even last 2 hours ...
  63. phew ! Plenty of memorable moments as well, it's a
  64. modern classic !
  65.  
  66. Harrison Ford is great in this role too, lots of funny dialogues, great 
  67. stunts, nasty snakes and the story is very intriguing even on repeated 
  68. viewings.

  70. The Indiana Jones films are all very entertaining and I have rated all 3 
  71. films at 4/5 or more ...
  72.  
  73. Raiders of the lost ark - 1981 - 4.5/5
  74. The temple of doom - 1984 - 4/5
  75. The last crusade - 1991 (?) - 4/5
  76.  
  77. So this is among my favorite series of all times for sure along with the 2 
  78. Terminator films, the Alien films (Except for the awful "Alien resurrection" 
  79. of course !!) etc. etc.

  81. I haven't heard of it being released again though ... would be a good idea, 
  82. why not ! ... Especially since they are now working on the 4th film !

  141. BIZARRE comment !!  ;o)   Alien resurrection is a 2/5 film in my opinion and
  142. that is very low considering I loved all the other films in the series and
  143. Sigourney Weaver is one of my favorite actresses too.

  150. Nearly all the Alien fans out there would agree with me that this Alien
  151. resurrection was terrible ... boring story, bad acting, so-so action scenes,
  152. a few good special effects at least ... mixing comedy with action (crippled
  153. guy strapped on the back of the taller fellow and shooting, Weaver playing
  154. basketball, someone shoot me, please, this is awful !!) ludicrous ending ...

  156. I remember this was a movie I was really looking forward to and then being
  157. very disappointed ... it's basically Aliens escaping and then running
  158. around, very repetitive, nothing original or interesting ... I am probably
  159. generous with a 2/5 ... 1.5/5 seems more appropriate ...

  161. J-Pierre Jeunet, the director was not used to making action films so why
  162. give him a huge budget and pick him to make this one, he doesn't know what
  163. he is doing half the time, plus he has to work with all those frenchies in
  164. the cast cos' they were in some of his previous films and he has a hard on
  165. for them, pleeeeease !

  167. I heard he couldn't even speak in english on the set, barely knew a few
  168. words so it was kind of hard to direct scenes I suppose ... he was too
  169. "artsy-fancy" to make this type of film in my opinion ... ruined the series
  170. of course, they are not talking about another Alien film if I am correct ??

  192. Greetings movie people.  I have been very busy at school, but I am still on the 
  193. list.  I was talking to my Sociology professor, and he told me I could get 
  194. brownie points if I could name a movie.
  195. I have spent 2 weeks on IMDB with no luck.  I don't know any of the actors or 
  196. the title.  This is what I do know.....
  197. - -It was made some time in the late70's early 80's
  198. - -A group of select people were chosed(and paid well if they lasted) to live in a 
  199. nuclear bunker.  
  200. - -during their stay, thru various radio feeds, they were led to believe that the 
  201. nuclear holocaust had infact taken place, and they were the only ones left 
  202. alive.  
  203. - -the reason they finally had to stop the experiment was that the young 
  204. model(black woman) in the group had hid herself away and slashed her wrists.  
  205. - -there was a general of an army running the experiment.  
  206. - -I do remember the end when the mother of the young boy came out of the shelter 
  207. and slugged the general.

  334. (especially CUCKOO'S NEST).  Ditto something like AMERICAN BEAUTY which is
  335. sort of a "Dramatic Comedy."  I've tried to limit my list to films whose
  336. primary goal is to make the viewer laugh.

  521. Ok, who plans to watch this Tv mini-series on CBS ??

  523. "American tragedy" about the real life murder case ...
  524. OJ Simpson on trial for murdering his ex-wife and her "boyfriend" ... 
  525. Normally I try to stay away from TV movies but this one sounds intriguing, 
  526. especially since Ving Rhames is in it as Johnnie Cochran, OJ's flashy 
  527. lawyer.

  529. I also followed closely the trial when it was going on
  530. (I was watching quite a bit of NFL football in the early to mid 1990's so I 
  531. knew OJ as a sport commentator and appreciated his antics too ... looked 
  532. like a nice
  533. fellow !)

  535. Of course the trial made me change my mind ... phew !
  536. Evidence pointing towards his guilt but his "slick lawyers" had a few aces 
  537. up their sleeves ... Having fun questioning the LAPD cops ...

  539. I bet they were LOVING IT, making them look like fools
  540. in front of everybody ! (Best line ever by a defense attorney : "If it 
  541. doesn't fit, you must ACQUIT !!")
  542. Not a lot of suspence of course because we know how it will end but I expect 
  543. it to be good !

  570. that are rather unhappy these days due to the poor quality of the films that

  688. Interesting article Marc.  I agree on the whole, but I'd like to ask you which
  689. perspective the article was written on?  La Presse seems to suggest a Spanish
  690. newspaper, so correct me if I'm Wrong.   My experience with the foreign press is
  691. that they tend to be a little to eager to point out weaknesses in what they see
  692. as the American dominated industry.   Some well deserved, some not. But knowing
  693. the context in which the article is written will put things in a better
  694. perspective.

  696. As for bad quality of films, I think its not really the quality, but the subject
  697. matter.  Science Fiction, Fantasy,  War films, horror and comedy excite movie
  698. goers these days and we've gotten several mediocre comedy and horror films this
  699. year, with only two war films.  the Patriot, which isn't really a war film and
  700. Gladiator, a surprise hit to be sure.  The science fiction category is also
  701. pretty weak with your run of the mill cloning movies and movies about Mars.
  702.  
  703. Next summer should be interesting with Final Fantasy , Tomb Raider and Jurrasic
  704. Park III crowding the summer movie market.  Also note Final Fantasy and Tomb
  705. Raider are based on popular videogame franchises.  There's also Spielberg's
  706. latest science fiction heavyweight, Aritificial Intelligence (A.I.).  Come
  707. December, the first installment of theLord of the Rings hits theatres followed
  708. up by Star Wars Episode II in may of 2002.    Lots of big names and I think its
  709. going to be a banner years for the industry in 2001 and 2002.

  711. The 2000 movie season is really due to the strange coincidence that most of the
  712. studio  titles that would have excited the public were either pushed back or
  713. slated to appear in 2001 and 2002.

  860. I know what you mean about originality in movies and it is hard to do. one
  861. recent film that I feel is very original was "Ravenous", I rewatched it last
  862. night and it is just soooo cool, and also something that would be hard to
  863. equal for originality in both story and music score.
  864. I also enjoyed Being J.M for the same reasons, it was different, a seemingly
  865. fresh idea but ultimately it seemed a bit lopsided. the whole love triangle
  866. thing got a bit tedious and the movie could have been so much more IMO.

  912. I watched "Fight Club" for the third time over the weekend.  This film is
  913. truly one of the most important films of the 20th Century.  It is unique in
  914. the fact that it speaks intelligently to our masculine side.  Too many films
  915. rely on us getting in touch with our feminine side, and there aren't enough
  916. that challenge us the other way.  Most films become too macho and forget the
  917. fact the men, as well as women, need to feel like men every now and again,
  918. and that we do have a train of thought outside mindless violence.
  919.  
  920. I would be interested to find out any female reactions to the film.  I'm not
  921. aiming to stereotype, or be chauvinistic here, I just feel that the film has
  922. a lot more to say about today's male society than a group of people beating
  923. the crap out of each other.

  1040. who keep complaining about the quality of this years films, yet they only
  1041. restrict themselves to mainstream films.  If they'd only go to an arthouse

  1061. This was a very good french film made by one of my favorite french 
  1062. director's : Claude Chabrol. ("The beast must die" - 1969, I talked about 
  1063. recently, was also made by him !)

  1065. "Les noces rouges" is also available with english subtitles as "Wedding in 
  1066. blood" and as is often the
  1067. case with Chabrol's films, it tells a fairly simple yet intriguing story 
  1068. involving murder !
  1069.  
  1070. A middle-aged man (Michel Piccoli) is married and having an affair with a 
  1071. younger woman (Stephanie Audran is certainly lovely !) who is also married 
  1072. to a sleazy politician (Claude Pieplu) who happens to be Piccoli's boss ...
  1073.  
  1074. Piccoli's wife is ill and doesn't want to do anything all day long except 
  1075. lay down in bed and sleep ... so he is able to sneak out of the house easily 
  1076. and meet with Audran who is doing the same, except her husband is not ill 
  1077. but away on business ... This goes on for a while and there are some funny 
  1078. scenes as they almost get "caught" a few times ... including once when they 
  1079. are making love being some bushes and children are fishing on the nearby 
  1080. lake ... They are a bit naughty (**and** loving it !)
  1081. ;o)

  1083. Soon they start to think they would be better off if both of their spouses 
  1084. were out of the picture, Piccoli's wife is ill and weak and Audran's husband 
  1085. is boring and goes to bed at 8pm and never wants to make love to her anyway 
  1086. (The reason she is having an affair in the first place !) ...

  1088. They think they would be able to meet more easily and be together all the 
  1089. time ... so they make up this plan to get rid of each other's spouse and not 
  1090. be bothered by the coppers of course ...

  1092. I was reminded a little of "Double indemnity" in part except here they are 
  1093. not doing this for the money but because they want to be together ...
  1094.  
  1095. Good acting, dialogues, camera work ... I was also thinking of some 
  1096. Hitchcock films in part ... "Vertigo" comes to mind (except I think this one 
  1097. is better ...)

  1142. Don't know what's happening out there in movie-land, but of late those of us
  1143. in blighty have been getting some fairly decent films released waaaayyyyyy
  1144. before you's guys.  First we had "Snatch" (british film so understandable),
  1145. then we had "O Brother Where Art Thou?" (definitely in my top 5 films of the
  1146. year).  Now, however, we have a film that will settle nicely in my top 3 of
  1147. the year - Christopher Nolan's "MEMENTO".
  1148.  
  1149. I'm sure that quite a few of you already know the plot, but for those of you
  1150. who don't I'll give you a basic run-down, hopefully spoiler free.
  1151.  
  1152. Guy Pearce (LA Confidential, Rules of Engagement), is an ex-insurance
  1153. investigator by the name of Leonard, who is on a quest to find the guy that
  1154. killed his wife.  However, due to a head injury to him whilst the attack was
  1155. taking place, he doesn't have the ability to form new memories, he can only
  1156. remember what happened before the "incident".  His memory now consists only
  1157. of minutes.  To aid him he takes polaroids of anyone and everything that he
  1158. feels at the time he may need to remember.  These include "associates", his
  1159. car, the hotel where he stays, etc...you get the picture.  Also he tatoos
  1160. vital information regarding the pursuit of his wifes killer on his body.
  1161. Now these ain't spoilers - just basic plot facts.
  1162.  
  1163. The film itself unravels in a backwards narrative, that is interspersed with
  1164. cut scenes of him telling his story to someone on the phone.  This works in
  1165. an excellent way, as the first segment of the film is actually the final
  1166. scene.  This backwards narrative means that you as a viewer suffer the same
  1167. kind of short term memory loss as Leonard, we have no idea why he is doing
  1168. what he is doing, just as he has no idea.
  1169.  
  1170. Leonard's previous job as an insurance investigator brought him into contact
  1171. with a guy who suffered the same condition, one Sammy Jankis.  As Leonard
  1172. met Sammy Jankis before the incident he can remember everything about him,
  1173. and his condition (or maybe????), and therefore this gives Leonard a reason
  1174. to be organised about the things that are important to him.
  1175.  
  1176. Guy Pearce - it's hard to believe that this guy (no pun intended) found his
  1177. footing on the Aussie daytime soap "Neighbours" (yes it IS spelled with a
  1178. "U").  Our first real glimpse of him outside the soap world was in the very
  1179. fine "Priscilla queen of the desert", then of course in "LA  Confidential"
  1180. which he basically carried, along with fellow Aussie Russell Crowe.  After
  1181. that we had "Ravenous" with Robert Carlysle, and more recently "Rules of
  1182. Engagement".  He is turning out to be an extremely accomplished and
  1183. versatile young actor, and he is dead-on perfect for this role.
  1184. Underplaying it to perfection.
  1185.  
  1186. The rest of the cast are also very good.  The "Matrix" connection begins
  1187. with Guy Pearce, who starred with Hugo "Agent Smith" Weaving in "Priscilla",
  1188. it continues with Joe "cypher" Pantoliano, as "friend" Teddy, and Carrie-Ann
  1189. "Trinity" Moss as the strange Natalie.  Essentially it is a three part
  1190. player, but it really is the strength of Guy Pearce that makes this movie
  1191. work.
  1192.  
  1193. As for Christopher Nolan, I think that this may be his first film, and it is
  1194. also based on a short story that he wrote.  The direction is confident, and
  1195. certainly brave in pulling off the backwards-narrative - it really does
  1196. work, I know I keep harping on about it, but given Leonard's condition, it's
  1197. the only way it could have been filmed.
  1198.  
  1199. It's one of those films that you watch and you think that you have
  1200. everything, then......well, you start to think about it a little bit more,
  1201. and it makes you think about it a little bit more.  It may seem like there
  1202. are loose ends, but trust me, think about it enough and everything ties up.
  1203.  
  1204. And the ending (which if the film was played forward would be the
  1205. beginning) - KICK ASS is all I'm gonna say!!!!!!!
  1206.  
  1207. I know you guys in the States have to wait until March 1st next year to see
  1208. this, but my advice is check out the festival circuits and see if it is
  1209. playing, because trust me - this is one film you don't want to miss.
  1210.

  1362. Infants watching this film would have nightmares for sure ... This is a Tim 
  1363. Burton film and he is not in the habit of making "family films" ... Even The 
  1364. nightmare before Christmas, his stop and go animated film is pretty weird 
  1365. and would most likely frighten some "miniatures" ... bizarre stuff going on, 
  1366. that "stick" figure going crazy, weirdos dancing and chanting ...  etc.

  1368. Sleepy Hollow was a very good movie but far from a comedy or family oriented 
  1369. (even if there aren't too many sexually explicit scenes, there is plenty of 
  1370. gory stuff not appropriate for kids as I said !) ... 3.5/5 ... Anybody else

  1379. I think sleepy hollow was great if you look at it as a comedy.It wasn't much
  1380. of a horror movie but still it was great plus its a movie you can sit with
  1381. the family since it lacks all the sexual content that movies have become
  1382. specially horror. I have the DVD version and I think its just a great one.
