Adding comments to yours, Midphase !
It's quite a coincidence that you mention this movie since I saw it again
just 2 days ago ... I was in the mood for that one as I had not seen it in
maybe 5 or 6 years. (I would say I have seen the film about 8 times in all)
... Still a 4.5/5 in my opinion ! It's like a rollercoaster ride ... all
those action scenes
packed in a movie that doesn't even last 2 hours ...
phew ! Plenty of memorable moments as well, it's a
modern classic !
Harrison Ford is great in this role too, lots of funny dialogues, great
stunts, nasty snakes and the story is very intriguing even on repeated
viewings.
The Indiana Jones films are all very entertaining and I have rated all 3
films at 4/5 or more ...
Raiders of the lost ark - 1981 - 4.5/5
The temple of doom - 1984 - 4/5
The last crusade - 1991 (?) - 4/5
So this is among my favorite series of all times for sure along with the 2
Terminator films, the Alien films (Except for the awful "Alien resurrection"
of course !!) etc. etc.
I haven't heard of it being released again though ... would be a good idea,
why not ! ... Especially since they are now working on the 4th film !
Marc ;o)
- -------------------------------------------------------
Anyone heard any info of a possible theatrical re-release of Raiders of the
Lost Ark in the year 2001 to celebrate its 20th anniversary?
Are they going to wait until the 25th? How about a DVD release?

Yes. Quite easily the worst film I've seen this year.

I disliked everything about the film except for Crispin Glover.

- ---------------------------------------------------------
***** Yes ! You were doing **great** but then you had to add this obviously
BIZARRE comment !! ;o) Alien resurrection is a 2/5 film in my opinion and
that is very low considering I loved all the other films in the series and
Sigourney Weaver is one of my favorite actresses too.
- - Alien - 1979 - 4.5/5
- - Aliens - 1986 - 5/5
- - Alien 3 - 1992 - 3.5/5
- - Alien resurrection - 1997 - 2/5
Nearly all the Alien fans out there would agree with me that this Alien
resurrection was terrible ... boring story, bad acting, so-so action scenes,
a few good special effects at least ... mixing comedy with action (crippled
guy strapped on the back of the taller fellow and shooting, Weaver playing
basketball, someone shoot me, please, this is awful !!) ludicrous ending ...
I remember this was a movie I was really looking forward to and then being
very disappointed ... it's basically Aliens escaping and then running
around, very repetitive, nothing original or interesting ... I am probably
generous with a 2/5 ... 1.5/5 seems more appropriate ...
J-Pierre Jeunet, the director was not used to making action films so why
give him a huge budget and pick him to make this one, he doesn't know what
he is doing half the time, plus he has to work with all those frenchies in
the cast cos' they were in some of his previous films and he has a hard on
for them, pleeeeease !
I heard he couldn't even speak in english on the set, barely knew a few
words so it was kind of hard to direct scenes I suppose ... he was too
"artsy-fancy" to make this type of film in my opinion ... ruined the series
of course, they are not talking about another Alien film if I am correct ??

Greetings movie people. I have been very busy at school, but I am still on the
list. I was talking to my Sociology professor, and he told me I could get
brownie points if I could name a movie.
I have spent 2 weeks on IMDB with no luck. I don't know any of the actors or
the title. This is what I do know.....
- -It was made some time in the late70's early 80's
- -A group of select people were chosed(and paid well if they lasted) to live in a
nuclear bunker.
- -during their stay, thru various radio feeds, they were led to believe that the
nuclear holocaust had infact taken place, and they were the only ones left
alive.
- -the reason they finally had to stop the experiment was that the young
model(black woman) in the group had hid herself away and slashed her wrists.
- -there was a general of an army running the experiment.
- -I do remember the end when the mother of the young boy came out of the shelter
and slugged the general.
PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THIS IS DRIVING ME INSANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not only have I checked the imdb, I have also phoned all videostores in a 100
mile radius!
Thank you guys in advance,

Subject: [MV] Favorite comedies
Hi !
The other day I was asking about your favorite "Emotional movies" .. but
what about those comedies ??
I like "dark" comedies often ... I listed some of my favorites below :
- - Fargo - 1996
- - One flew over the cuckoo's nest - 1977
- - My cousin Vinny - 1992
- - Citizen Ruth - 1996
- - Living in oblivion - 1995
- - Kingpin - 1996
- - Being John Malkovich - 1999
- - Election - 1999
- - Waiting for Guffman - 1996
- - Pecker - 1998
- - The breakfast club - 1985
- - The daytrippers - 1997
- - The naked gun - 1988
- - Go - 1999
- - Stakeout - 1987
- - Freeway - 1995
- - No - 1998 (in french !)
- - Pleasantville - 1998
- - Howard Stern's private parts - 1997
- - Honeymoon in Vegas - 1992
- - Muriel's wedding - 1994 (from the land of OZ)
- - Planes, trains and automobiles - 1988
- - Elvis Gratton - 1985 (in french !)
- - Swingers - 1996
- - Crumb - 1994
- - What about Bob ? - 1991
- - Get shorty - 1995
- - Three o'clock high - 1987 (guilty pleasure film !)
Anyone heard of it ?? ;o)
- - The castle - 1997 (Those aussies doing it again !)
Love the scene where they "walk home" from the airport !
- - SLC punk ! - 1999 (Am I the only one who likes this ?)
- - The acid house - 1998
Some of these films may not be viewed by some people as being "comedies"
though ... like "Fargo" "One flew over the cuckoo's nest" "Freeway" etc. ...
But it shows the type of comedies I like most of the times ... films that
also have some "serious" moments in them ...
Have a fine day !
Marc

Subject: [MV] RE: Favorite comedies

Here's my list of "Top 14" favorites, in no particular order:
SAFETY LAST
CITY LIGHTS
DUCK SOUP
IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT
SOME LIKE IT HOT
YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN
ANNIE HALL
A SHOT IN THE DARK
QUICK CHANGE
DR. STRANGELOVE
LAVENDER HILL MOB
AFTER HOURS
MONTY PYTHON'S LIFE OF BRIAN
THIS IS SPINAL TAP
I managed not to have a single hit from Marc's list, although I like a lot of
his favorites:
> - Fargo - 1996
> - One flew over the cuckoo's nest - 1977
Great movies, but I don't really consider them full-blown "comedies"
(especially CUCKOO'S NEST). Ditto something like AMERICAN BEAUTY which is
sort of a "Dramatic Comedy." I've tried to limit my list to films whose
primary goal is to make the viewer laugh.
> - My cousin Vinny - 1992
This movie was much funnier than I expected. One of those rare comedies where
the trailers did NOT show all of the funniest scenes.
> - Citizen Ruth - 1996
I haven't seen this, but I liked ELECTION quite a bit (from the same guy), so
it might be worth my while.
> - Being John Malkovich - 1999
Great film all-around.
> - Election - 1999
As already indicated, I liked this one quite a bit.
> - Waiting for Guffman - 1996
Funny stuff! Have you seen BEST IN SHOW yet? It's also hilarious.
> - Pecker - 1998
Great little film. One of Waters' funniest.
> - The breakfast club - 1985
The older I get, the stupider I realize this movie actually is.
> - The naked gun - 1988
This one is okay, but not nearly as funny as the television program that
inspired it ("Police Squad").
> - Go - 1999
I like GO, but I'm not sure if I'd consider it a "comedy"...
> - Stakeout - 1987
This movie was ultimately forgettable.
> - Pleasantville - 1998
Good flick, but not a comedy.
> - Howard Stern's private parts - 1997
Better than I (or just about anybody else) expected.
> - Honeymoon in Vegas - 1992
Good, but not great.
> - Muriel's wedding - 1994 (from the land of OZ)
> - Planes, trains and automobiles - 1988
> - Swingers - 1996
Some more hilarious films that just didn't quite make my "favorites" list,
even though I like them all quite a bit.
> - Crumb - 1994
> - What about Bob ? - 1991
I hated both of these films with a passion.
> - Get shorty - 1995
Amusing, but not as good as some other recent Leonard adaptations.
> - Three o'clock high - 1987 (guilty pleasure film !)
> Anyone heard of it ?? ;o)
I remember this one. I saw it when it came out, but I didn't care for it too
much then, even though I was in the target audience. A western for teens, I
guess.
> - SLC punk ! - 1999 (Am I the only one who likes this ?)
I haven't seen it, even though I live in SLC. Oops.

Ok, who plans to watch this Tv mini-series on CBS ??
"American tragedy" about the real life murder case ...
OJ Simpson on trial for murdering his ex-wife and her "boyfriend" ...
Normally I try to stay away from TV movies but this one sounds intriguing,
especially since Ving Rhames is in it as Johnnie Cochran, OJ's flashy
lawyer.
I also followed closely the trial when it was going on
(I was watching quite a bit of NFL football in the early to mid 1990's so I
knew OJ as a sport commentator and appreciated his antics too ... looked
like a nice
fellow !)
Of course the trial made me change my mind ... phew !
Evidence pointing towards his guilt but his "slick lawyers" had a few aces
up their sleeves ... Having fun questioning the LAPD cops ...
I bet they were LOVING IT, making them look like fools
in front of everybody ! (Best line ever by a defense attorney : "If it
doesn't fit, you must ACQUIT !!")
Not a lot of suspence of course because we know how it will end but I expect
it to be good !
First part : Sunday night : 9pm on CBS (EST)
Second part : Wednesday night : 9pm on CBS (EST)
Have a fine day !

Subject: [MV] Unhappy moviegoers ...
Hi !
Interesting article in the newspaper yesterday morning concerning moviegoers
that are rather unhappy these days due to the poor quality of the films that
are
presented ...
Source : "La Presse" newspaper, nov. 11th 2000.
- --------------------------------------------------------
"A succession of bad films ..."
"Bad films are more numerous these days on the movie screens in the United
States. Since the beginning of summer, this trend seems to have been
developing slowly but surely and is now continuing. The box office numbers
are still impressive and are even higher than the usual for this time of the
year but a good number of moviegoers are nevertheless unhappy with the
quality of the films that they see ..."
"Meet the parents should have only been a marginal success according to Art
Rockwell, who is analyzing the box office numbers of all the new releases
for Rockwell capital Management. That movie being such a huge success
indicates that there weren't many other choices for the moviegoers. People
wanted to go to the movies no matter what."
"More people than ever are complaining and saying that more bad films are
being produced though, especially these past few months. Movies like Dr. T
and the women, Lost souls and Lucky numbers have been mentioned often as
being dead ducks."
"According to Oliver Oberle, president of www.showbizdata.com, a company
that evaluates the box office performances of all the new movies released,
this situation is worrying. Since Spring, Scary movie was the only film
that was a really huge hit and it wasn't even a good film."
"The following movies are among the most disappointing :
Book of shadows, Blair Witch 2 that was released for Halloween is probably
the #1 title according to Rockwell."
"Everybody in Hollywood was expecting this film to take in at least 30M$
during the first week-end and it only made 13M$ behind an "old" film (Meet
the parents) that was already in its 4th week in theaters. The horror movie
audience had already read plenty of negative comments on the internet and
seen the trailer that
wasn't very appealing."
"Almost famous from Cameron Crowe (Jerry Maguire) only made around 30 M$
during its 7 week run. This was a film that everyone said would be a hit
says Oberle, but to have good box office numbers, making a good film is not
the most important thing. You have to release the movie at the most
appropriate time and have a good marketing campaign. Audiences also weren't
very interested because the movie was set in the early '70s."
"Pay it forward was certainly expected to do more. Haley Joel Osment and
Kevin Spacey wanted to make the world a better place but seats in the movie
theaters presenting the film were often empty. This one wanted to be like
American beauty but the results are rather disappointing so far. It only
made 19M$ the first two weeks despite big stars and a good storyline."
"The political thriller The contender that was supposed to be a hit both at
the box office and at the next Oscars' show attracted few moviegoers despite
the fact it was a quality film. 14M$ in 3 weeks, so it certainly won't be
anywhere near what I was wishing for says Martin Grove from the Hollywood
reporter online. The public had enough of the real political campaign going
on perhaps and was annoyed by the serious look of the film."
"Some stars are also to blame according to the experts. John Travolta made
two bad films back-to-back, Battlefield Earth and Lucky Numbers. Wynona
Ryder did a little better but not much with Autumn in New York and Lost
souls. Richard Gere is in trouble with Autumn in New York and Dr. T and the
women and Sylvester Stallone's Get Carter was out of the movie theaters
swiftly."
"At least Charlie's angels is making good money now and this will be the
film that will finally replace Meet the parents as the king of the box
office for the moment."
- ---------------------------------------------------------
Have a fine day !
Marc ;o)
- -----------------------------------------------------
" I met this six-year-old child, with this blind,
pale, emotionless face and the blackest eyes ...
the DEVIL'S EYES ! I spent eight years trying to
reach him, and then another seven trying to keep
him locked up for I realized what was living behind
that boy's eyes was purely and simply ... EVIL ! "
Donald Pleasance as "Dr. Sam Loomis"

Interesting article Marc. I agree on the whole, but I'd like to ask you which
perspective the article was written on? La Presse seems to suggest a Spanish
newspaper, so correct me if I'm Wrong. My experience with the foreign press is
that they tend to be a little to eager to point out weaknesses in what they see
as the American dominated industry. Some well deserved, some not. But knowing
the context in which the article is written will put things in a better
perspective.
As for bad quality of films, I think its not really the quality, but the subject
matter. Science Fiction, Fantasy, War films, horror and comedy excite movie
goers these days and we've gotten several mediocre comedy and horror films this
year, with only two war films. the Patriot, which isn't really a war film and
Gladiator, a surprise hit to be sure. The science fiction category is also
pretty weak with your run of the mill cloning movies and movies about Mars.
Next summer should be interesting with Final Fantasy , Tomb Raider and Jurrasic
Park III crowding the summer movie market. Also note Final Fantasy and Tomb
Raider are based on popular videogame franchises. There's also Spielberg's
latest science fiction heavyweight, Aritificial Intelligence (A.I.). Come
December, the first installment of theLord of the Rings hits theatres followed
up by Star Wars Episode II in may of 2002. Lots of big names and I think its
going to be a banner years for the industry in 2001 and 2002.
The 2000 movie season is really due to the strange coincidence that most of the
studio titles that would have excited the public were either pushed back or
slated to appear in 2001 and 2002.

I know what you mean about originality in movies and it is hard to do. one
recent film that I feel is very original was "Ravenous", I rewatched it last
night and it is just soooo cool, and also something that would be hard to
equal for originality in both story and music score.
I also enjoyed Being J.M for the same reasons, it was different, a seemingly
fresh idea but ultimately it seemed a bit lopsided. the whole love triangle
thing got a bit tedious and the movie could have been so much more IMO.

well for a start you have described a current series episode of "the outer
limits". as for a movie it sounds familiar though, just can't place it.

I watched "Fight Club" for the third time over the weekend. This film is
truly one of the most important films of the 20th Century. It is unique in
the fact that it speaks intelligently to our masculine side. Too many films
rely on us getting in touch with our feminine side, and there aren't enough
that challenge us the other way. Most films become too macho and forget the
fact the men, as well as women, need to feel like men every now and again,
and that we do have a train of thought outside mindless violence.
I would be interested to find out any female reactions to the film. I'm not
aiming to stereotype, or be chauvinistic here, I just feel that the film has
a lot more to say about today's male society than a group of people beating
the crap out of each other.

You are all missing one of the all time greats - nope, I'm not talking about
Chaplin, The Stooges or Harold Llloyd, nor am I talking about Robin
Williams, Eddie Murphy or Adam Sandler. I, of course, am talking about Steve
Martins' Meisterwerk "The Jerk" If this film don't make you wet your pants

Thanks for the article...interesting read. Personally, I'm tired of people
who keep complaining about the quality of this years films, yet they only
restrict themselves to mainstream films. If they'd only go to an arthouse
every once in a while, they'd find a crop of good movies, as the independent
scene this year has been better than average.
I'm reminded of an old joke:
PATIENT: Doctor, it hurts when I do this!
DOCTOR: Well, don't do that!

Subject: [MV] Wedding in blood - 1973
Hi !
This was a very good french film made by one of my favorite french
director's : Claude Chabrol. ("The beast must die" - 1969, I talked about
recently, was also made by him !)
"Les noces rouges" is also available with english subtitles as "Wedding in
blood" and as is often the
case with Chabrol's films, it tells a fairly simple yet intriguing story
involving murder !
A middle-aged man (Michel Piccoli) is married and having an affair with a
younger woman (Stephanie Audran is certainly lovely !) who is also married
to a sleazy politician (Claude Pieplu) who happens to be Piccoli's boss ...
Piccoli's wife is ill and doesn't want to do anything all day long except
lay down in bed and sleep ... so he is able to sneak out of the house easily
and meet with Audran who is doing the same, except her husband is not ill
but away on business ... This goes on for a while and there are some funny
scenes as they almost get "caught" a few times ... including once when they
are making love being some bushes and children are fishing on the nearby
lake ... They are a bit naughty (**and** loving it !)
;o)
Soon they start to think they would be better off if both of their spouses
were out of the picture, Piccoli's wife is ill and weak and Audran's husband
is boring and goes to bed at 8pm and never wants to make love to her anyway
(The reason she is having an affair in the first place !) ...
They think they would be able to meet more easily and be together all the
time ... so they make up this plan to get rid of each other's spouse and not
be bothered by the coppers of course ...
I was reminded a little of "Double indemnity" in part except here they are
not doing this for the money but because they want to be together ...
Good acting, dialogues, camera work ... I was also thinking of some
Hitchcock films in part ... "Vertigo" comes to mind (except I think this one
is better ...)
;o)
The last line said by Piccoli is also DISTURBING ... gotta love a film that
ends with a "Bang" like that !
3.5/5 overall, I can't go higher due to the first half hour of the film that
is a bit slow but if you stick with it, it gets better and better along the
way ...

Subject: [MV] MEMENTO (2000) 4.5/5
Don't know what's happening out there in movie-land, but of late those of us
in blighty have been getting some fairly decent films released waaaayyyyyy
before you's guys. First we had "Snatch" (british film so understandable),
then we had "O Brother Where Art Thou?" (definitely in my top 5 films of the
year). Now, however, we have a film that will settle nicely in my top 3 of
the year - Christopher Nolan's "MEMENTO".
I'm sure that quite a few of you already know the plot, but for those of you
who don't I'll give you a basic run-down, hopefully spoiler free.
Guy Pearce (LA Confidential, Rules of Engagement), is an ex-insurance
investigator by the name of Leonard, who is on a quest to find the guy that
killed his wife. However, due to a head injury to him whilst the attack was
taking place, he doesn't have the ability to form new memories, he can only
remember what happened before the "incident". His memory now consists only
of minutes. To aid him he takes polaroids of anyone and everything that he
feels at the time he may need to remember. These include "associates", his
car, the hotel where he stays, etc...you get the picture. Also he tatoos
vital information regarding the pursuit of his wifes killer on his body.
Now these ain't spoilers - just basic plot facts.
The film itself unravels in a backwards narrative, that is interspersed with
cut scenes of him telling his story to someone on the phone. This works in
an excellent way, as the first segment of the film is actually the final
scene. This backwards narrative means that you as a viewer suffer the same
kind of short term memory loss as Leonard, we have no idea why he is doing
what he is doing, just as he has no idea.
Leonard's previous job as an insurance investigator brought him into contact
with a guy who suffered the same condition, one Sammy Jankis. As Leonard
met Sammy Jankis before the incident he can remember everything about him,
and his condition (or maybe????), and therefore this gives Leonard a reason
to be organised about the things that are important to him.
Guy Pearce - it's hard to believe that this guy (no pun intended) found his
footing on the Aussie daytime soap "Neighbours" (yes it IS spelled with a
"U"). Our first real glimpse of him outside the soap world was in the very
fine "Priscilla queen of the desert", then of course in "LA Confidential"
which he basically carried, along with fellow Aussie Russell Crowe. After
that we had "Ravenous" with Robert Carlysle, and more recently "Rules of
Engagement". He is turning out to be an extremely accomplished and
versatile young actor, and he is dead-on perfect for this role.
Underplaying it to perfection.
The rest of the cast are also very good. The "Matrix" connection begins
with Guy Pearce, who starred with Hugo "Agent Smith" Weaving in "Priscilla",
it continues with Joe "cypher" Pantoliano, as "friend" Teddy, and Carrie-Ann
"Trinity" Moss as the strange Natalie. Essentially it is a three part
player, but it really is the strength of Guy Pearce that makes this movie
work.
As for Christopher Nolan, I think that this may be his first film, and it is
also based on a short story that he wrote. The direction is confident, and
certainly brave in pulling off the backwards-narrative - it really does
work, I know I keep harping on about it, but given Leonard's condition, it's
the only way it could have been filmed.
It's one of those films that you watch and you think that you have
everything, then......well, you start to think about it a little bit more,
and it makes you think about it a little bit more. It may seem like there
are loose ends, but trust me, think about it enough and everything ties up.
And the ending (which if the film was played forward would be the
beginning) - KICK ASS is all I'm gonna say!!!!!!!
I know you guys in the States have to wait until March 1st next year to see
this, but my advice is check out the festival circuits and see if it is
playing, because trust me - this is one film you don't want to miss.
Til next time
MARK DAINTY

Hey Scott, good review ! You are confirming my suspicions that this was a

I just bought a 2L bottle of Orange Crush (That delicious soft drink !) and
it says on the bottle that I would have a 1$ rebate to go see Red planet if
I brought the lil' platic "thingy" under the cap to any movie theater

That's rather "ace", no ?? You think I should change my mind ?? ;o)
I also went to the video store and found "An affair of love" you talked
about recently ... I shall rent it
soon ...
Have a fine day !

Subject: [MV] Sleepy Hollow, a family film ??
*** You must be delusional Alexis, Sleepy Hollow is not a comedy and it is
certainly not a family film ... all those people being beheaded, a scary
headless horseman roaming the countryside on his dark horse, grim and dark
atmosphere throughout ...
Infants watching this film would have nightmares for sure ... This is a Tim
Burton film and he is not in the habit of making "family films" ... Even The
nightmare before Christmas, his stop and go animated film is pretty weird
and would most likely frighten some "miniatures" ... bizarre stuff going on,
that "stick" figure going crazy, weirdos dancing and chanting ... etc.
Sleepy Hollow was a very good movie but far from a comedy or family oriented
(even if there aren't too many sexually explicit scenes, there is plenty of
gory stuff not appropriate for kids as I said !) ... 3.5/5 ... Anybody else
has COMMENTS about this ??
G'day to everyonnnne !
Marc ;o)
- --------------------------------------------------
I think sleepy hollow was great if you look at it as a comedy. It wasn't much
of a horror movie but still it was great plus its a movie you can sit with
the family since it lacks all the sexual content that movies have become
specially horror. I have the DVD version and I think its just a great one.
