Hi !
I watched this french film tonight : "Que la bete meure" also available
with
english subtitles under the title : "The beast must die" (1969)
It's a film directed by one of my favorite french directors, Claude
Chabrol
... I love many of his twisted tales often involving murders and
double-crossings ...
The story is fairly simple ... we see a young boy around 8 years old
walking
home and just as he is crossing an intersection, a Ford Mustang appears
and
hits him ... the driver is acting like a maniac and doesn't even stop,
just
keeps on going, a hit-and-run ...
The story then focuses on the father (Well played by Michel Duchaussoy)
who
swears that he will get the bastard who killed his son ... he doesn't
care
if it takes months or even years but he will find whoever is responsible.
The police doesn't help much saying they have already done everything
they
could but have little to work with, so he does his own little
investigation
and tries to find clues to find out the type of car that was used, where
it
could possibly have been repaired, the type of damage it would have had
...
etc.
All this is done in a very intelligent and restrained way that could
possibly seem boring to some people who are more used to wild action
films
... but it's a nice change of pace in my opinion !
The man writes his thoughts and the progress of his investigation in a
journal and we hear him in voice overs describing what he is thinking of
and
especially what he will do to the person who killed his son (He wants to
torture that person for several hours basically until he/she dies in
horrible pain ...)
After a while he finds some intriguing clues and this leads to a young
french actress that could possibly be involved, (Caroline Cellier is
amazing
in this film !) so he pretends to fall in love with her in order to find
out
more ...
He needs to be sure of course before going ahead with his revenge scheme
...
he has to take his time of course as he can't just ask her point blank
"Did
you kill a little boy by hitting him with your car in january of this
year
??" ... he has to look for more clues to find out if she is involved or
not
... or maybe if it's someone close to her that is ...
This is a very good film that I recommend. Good dialogues, acting,
cinematography ... and the story
is of course very interesting.
3.5/5

Precision :
The film is known either as :
"The beast must die" or "This man must die"
Here's a link to a favorable lil' capsule review ... Leonard Maltin also
rates it at 3.5/4 and calls it one
of Claude Chabrol's best films.

I recently subscribed to Film-Four, the production house linked
to the U.K.#'s Channel 4 television station, and it got me thinking
about the great films they have given us, take a look at the following
list, and I'm sure you'll all agree that a lot of these films are sheer
quality, yep there are also some real stinkers, but mainly they produce
excellent films.

Precision :
The film is known either as :
"The beast must die" or "This man must die"
Here's a link to a favorable lil' capsule review ... Leonard Maltin also
rates it at 3.5/4 and calls it one
of Claude Chabrol's best films.

3.5/5

" I met this six-year-old child, with this blind,
pale, emotionless face and the blackest eyes ...
the DEVIL'S EYES ! I spent eight years trying to
reach him, and then another seven trying to keep
him locked up for I realized what was living behind
that boy's eyes was purely and simply ... EVIL ! "

Precision :
The film is known either as :
"The beast must die" or "This man must die"
Here's a link to a favorable lil' capsule review ... Leonard Maltin also
rates it at 3.5/4 and calls it one
of Claude Chabrol's best films.
