Subject: [MV] Titanic : Emotional movies ...
***** Yes, this movie is special ... I was having troubles watching
it in
the last 80-90 minutes ... It was a bit overwhelming in part, especially
knowing this happened for real ... Titanic going down and 1400-1500 people
dying ...
The one scene that I would like to add is the one where Rose and Jack
are on the bow of the titanic in the sunset. That scene was very powerful.
I have to admit that scene got to me ... even the
dialogues that may make some people cringe in that scene ... Jack saying to
Rose "You trust me ?" very softly ... and he holds her by the waist as she
has her hands to her side ... Wow ... this was unbelievable ... and looked
REALLY good on screen ... magnificent camera work right **there** ...
It was
incredibly romantic and touching (in my opinion, I know a lot of people are
probably rolling their eyes back **right about now** !!!) Plus Kate Winslet
is such a "doll", soft, sweet ... she's perfect in every way in that film,
no
wonder Jack falls for her ! She's too lovely, damn it ! ;o)
I also agree that scene where the mother talks to her 2 lil' kids in bed
while the ship is going down is something else ... as is the one where we
see an aging couple on a bed too ... when Kate and Leo say goodbye as he
sacrifices his life for her, holding on to that board, he knows he can't get
on it ... geeesh ... you can see it in his face when he makes up his mind
that the most crucial thing is that she lives, it's in his eyes, the precise
moment he realizes it ... great acting by Leo there ! ... and the end when
Gloria Stewart tosses the diamond in the ocean ... oh man ... the whole film
is incredible as I can single out dozens of powerful moments like that ...
Marc ;o)

***** Ok, I just locked HORNS with a friend of mine who is always trashing
Titanic ... the discussion is below ...
***** Adding comments ... inside your message, Daniel .. with stars in front
... Marc ******** ;o)
- ----------------------------------------------------------
Daniel's comments have no stars in front ...
>I didn't hate it as it was entertaining but I certainly didn't like it
>much--2.5/5.
>Most people are stupid (not saying you are for liking this film) so if a
>film grosses heaps of money or becomes the most succesful film of all time
it
>doesn't really mean a lot to me,it just perptuates my theory that most
>people are stupid!
***** Yes, I agree that a lot of films making big money are awful, but some
are mighty good as well .. example : American beauty ... I wouldn't say
people in general who like "American beauty" are stupid (We both give 5/5 to
that one, right ??)
***** I think you are being very harsh on this film considering how
impressive it is ... ok you may not like the storyline and you always
complain about "LEO" but look at all the other aspects of the films that are
magnificent ... special effects, sound, music, stunts, sets, attention to a
thousand and one details ...
****** I think you had your mind set from the get go when you saw this film
... like you already hated it for your own personal reasons and nothing
could have made you change your mind about it ...
>This is the kind of film I'd expect you to dislike as well.Although it's
fun
>I thought you'd see through it's predictable and formulaic romance,
***** Well, it was predictable, we've seen hundreds of people falling in
love on screen, what ?? Is everyone suppose to hate each other in every
movie out there ?? ... but it was well made too ... I liked how they met,
how they slowly but surely fell in love .. how they respected each other, I
enjoyed it a great deal ... and that aspect of the film is not everything
anyway ... the last 80-90 minutes or so involve the ship hitting the iceberg
and sinking slowly but surely ... now that was expected of course, but how
the movie depicts those last hours of Titanic's history is really handled in
an impressive way, it looks REAL, man ... you're telling me that entire last
hour is not 5/5 material ?? When the back of that ship lifts into the air
... man ... it's eye-popping stuff !! ... The film is managing to tell a
story-within-a-story like that ... mixing the two together, both the romance
and the sinking of the ship ... it's not easy to do yet they pulled it off !
it's
>incredibly simplistic views on class structure--everyone rich is an
>asshole,everyone poor is nice.
***** Not true ... you are generalizing again ... There were rich people on
that ship that were very nice, Kathy Bates, The architect who built the
ship, Mr. Guggenheim, some of the other passengers come to mind ... I just
saw it again and they were not ALL evil ... same as all the poor people were
not angels either ...
The old storyline of rich girl falls for poor
>boy who dies--give me a break, this story-line is old as the hills not to
>mention corny.It's a maniuplative film that slams it's messages,romance
etc
>down your throat and it sure isn't orginial or an intelligent piece of
>cinema.
****** Sure it is a brilliant film, and many respected critics agree as
well, Ebert : 4/4, Berardinelli : 4/4 ... you just had the wrong mindset
when you started watching it ... same as me perhaps when I watch an oldie
film ... you were complaining the other day I was close-minded sometimes
watching an oldie and not being forgiving for a car chase that looks
phony-as-hell if
I recall ... what happens in this film looks more realistic than any of
those old car chases with images projected on a screen behind the actors for
sure ...
I mean christ any film with Celine Dion providing the soundtrack too
>hasn't got much going for it in terms of artistic integrity.
**** I'm sorry but that song "My heart will go on" is "ace" ... Oscar
winning song and it is perfect for this film as well .. Cameron didn't even
intend on using any title song but when he heard this one he had to put it
in ... again, your bad impression of Celine Dion is tainting your opinion of
this song and the movie as well ... I am not even a Celine Dion fan in
general, I have no Cd's of her but I saw her live once (tickets given to me
for free !) and she gave a really entertaining show ... you would be
surprised ... The music in this film is amazing anyway, mostly instrumental
so your "Celine argument" is taking water in rapidly .. no pun intended !
I don't want you
>to agree with me nessecarily but just see where I'm coming from.
**** Yes, I know ... Seems we will NEVER agree on certain titles ... but I
think you were being unfair on this one ...
I hate
>eveything these kind of films stand for too, these big budget films made my
>directors who are more businessmen than artists.
****** I mostly like small budget films too as you know ... in my top 10 for
1999 probably 6 or 7 could be considered small budget films ... but a big
budget film is not necessarely bad ... again ... you seem to be thinking
because a film has a big budget it must be bad ... if the money is spent
wisely as it was the case in this one, you can have 100 M$ and make an awful
film like "Waterworld", "Wild wild west" and other "Cuthroat island" and you
can have 1M$ and make a masterpiece ...
***** I mean building a huge Titanic set, great special effects, a thousand
and one extras, costumes, shooting footage of the real titanic, ... etc.
This costs a lot of money ... and It can produce something really incredible
as is the case here in my opinion ...
******* Your comments about Cameron are not appropriate since he has made
heaps of great films before this one ... Terminator 2, The abyss, True lies,
Terminator, Aliens ... etc. etc. Ok, they are not "arsty" films ... but
they are well made big budget action films ...
I don't want to see films
>made by someone whose just trying to win oscars
****** Cameron must not be looking for Oscars since it probably was his
first time getting one for Titanic ... I should check but he is not the
"Oscar" type, right ?? How can you "try" to win an Oscar anyway ... you try
to make a good film, I'm sure he was thinking .. "where am I going to put my
Oscar for best director ??" when he was on the set knee deep in cold water !
If he wants to have an Oscar he can buy one for 1000$ probably ... ;o)
and make a shitload of money
>by figuring out the best "formulaic" storyline will do the business.A
>tragedy, romance,a pair of good looking leads--pure an utter commercialism.
***** He believed in the project, accepting to work for FREE when the budget
was out of control, so he's not only thinking of his wallet and making
commercial films ... Despite what you say Leonardo DiCaprio is a good actor
and he has proved it in the past ... same as Kate Winslet of course ...
Ebert even said DiCaprio not nominated for best actor in Titanic was
ludicrous ! This is just another aspect of the film you are criticizing for
no good reason in my opinion ... just because you dislike him as an actor,
it makes you hate his performance .. and the film ... before the opening
credits have finished rolling ... Hehe ! no hard feelings anyway ! Nice
discussion, huh ?? Locking those HORNS ! Yay !
Marc ;o)

Here, here.
Ruining a perfectly fine movie with her warbling and once again showing
the tendency for the masses to act like a bunch of sheep and gravitate
towards utter pap.

Since it seems everybody is listing off more recent fare, I'd like to take us
back to 1935, for a film that is fresh on my mind since I watched for
Halloween: BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN. I'm sure that those of you who haven't seen
the film are saying "!?!" to yourselves, but I assure you the film is quite
emotional. The scenes that get to me the most are the encounter in the
hermit's cabin as well as the heart-breaking ending. The film is rather funny
and camp as well, which means it will take you through the full gamut of
emotions. A highly recommended classic.

Subject: [MV] The best must die - 1969 - 3.5/5
Hi !
I watched this french film tonight : "Que la bete meure" also available with
english subtitles under the title : "The beast must die" (1969)
It's a film directed by one of my favorite french directors, Claude Chabrol
... I love many of his twisted tales often involving murders and
double-crossings ...
The story is fairly simple ... we see a young boy around 8 years old walking
home and just as he is crossing an intersection, a Ford Mustang appears and
hits him ... the driver is acting like a maniac and doesn't even stop, just
keeps on going, a hit-and-run ...
The story then focuses on the father (Well played by Michel Duchaussoy) who
swears that he will get the bastard who killed his son ... he doesn't care
if it takes months or even years but he will find whoever is responsible.
The police doesn't help much saying they have already done everything they
could but have little to work with, so he does his own little investigation
and tries to find clues to find out the type of car that was used, where it
could possibly have been repaired, the type of damage it would have had ...
etc.
All this is done in a very intelligent and restrained way that could
possibly seem boring to some people who are more used to wild action films
... but it's a nice change of pace in my opinion !
The man writes his thoughts and the progress of his investigation in a
journal and we hear him in voice overs describing what he is thinking of and
especially what he will do to the person who killed his son (He wants to
torture that person for several hours basically until he/she dies in
horrible pain ...)
After a while he finds some intriguing clues and this leads to a young
french actress that could possibly be involved, (Caroline Cellier is amazing
in this film !) so he pretends to fall in love with her in order to find out
more ...
He needs to be sure of course before going ahead with his revenge scheme ...
he has to take his time of course as he can't just ask her point blank "Did
you kill a little boy by hitting him with your car in january of this year
??" ... he has to look for more clues to find out if she is involved or not
... or maybe if it's someone close to her that is ...
This is a very good film that I recommend. Good dialogues, acting,
cinematography ... and the story
is of course very interesting.
3.5/5

" I met this six-year-old child, with this blind,
pale, emotionless face and the blackest eyes ...
the DEVIL'S EYES ! I spent eight years trying to
reach him, and then another seven trying to keep
him locked up for I realized what was living behind
that boy's eyes was purely and simply ... EVIL ! "

Precision :
The film is known either as :
"The beast must die" or "This man must die"
Here's a link to a favorable lil' capsule review ... Leonard Maltin also
rates it at 3.5/4 and calls it one
of Claude Chabrol's best films.
