Well, I might as well add to it. Pok=E9mon is not something I ever saw as=20
marketing. I mean, it's a cartoon made from a popular videogame that became=
=20
popular as well. It's enjoyable to those that know these characters, and,=20
quite frankly, I'm glad that it's so popular. If it's mainly kids that watc=
h=20
it, then what do they learn from it? They learn that friendship is the most=
=20
important thing in life. Ash might not be the best cartoon character I've=20
seen, but it's his relationship with his creatures that make the show such a=
=20
winner for me. As for the movie, well, Kids WB and 4Kids seemed to decide=20
upon taking the morals much more seriously. By that, I mean radical. Their=
=20
thinking: "These kids won't know what this is getting at unless we make the=20
characters say it themselves." True, I can't understand the Japanese=20
version, but there are a few words I can pick out here and there to make me=20
realize how much better the dialogue was in the original. And I hear other=20
things from websites, too. The main point of the movie was supposed to be=20
that powers of the heart will ultimately triumph. The english version was s=
o=20
watered down (along with Mewtwo himself) that I don't know if anyone actuall=
y=20
realized it. However, if enough kids do, I don't see such a big problem wit=
h=20
it. They could've left out that stupid "Brother, My Brother" song, though.

Pokemon exists only to grow, it's like a cancer - slowly overtaking
parts of our lives. Mass marketing hysteria gone ballistic. I know
that there are Manga and Anime fans out there who truly believe that
there can't be a bad Japanese cartoon, but I sat through Pokemon the

I don't think this comment about children's movies not needing to be
reviewed is unfair. Children aren't stupid. I remember when i was young I
hated to watch a movie that made me feel patronised. You can't put most
children in front of a screen and expect them to watch anything. That's
why I do think they need to be reviewed. Also, some movies targetted at
children are also quite accessible to adults, the Toy Story movies are
prime examples, so reviewing them is no harm, just to let adults know what
they are like.

Well, the trailer for M. Night Shymalan's (THE SIXTH SENSE) new film,
UNBREAKABLE, is out on the net now at www.areyouunbreakable.com. The film
stars Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson. The trailer is very low-key and
doesn't appear to give away too much information. The website is still under
construction, but has some interesting things as well. I've also heard that
the trailer will play in from of X-MEN, so who knows? Check it out.
Fans of THE SIXTH SENSE might also want to check out Shymalan's WIDE AWAKE
(1998). Badly marketed as a Rosie O'Donell vehicle, the film didn't last long
in theaters. However, it's an intelligent study on spirituality in children
and worth seeing.

Not so. Gotta Catch em all is the slogan for the game. The idea is to=20
collect all 150 by playing the game. It is fun, too. The reason they made=20
two versions is to create a trading community. Kids, even shy ones, can=20
communicate openly about this stuff because they know about it. They must=20
trade with each other to "Catch em all." And, if you actually followed the=20
show, you'd see that Ash is not very good at capturing Pok=E9mon. I mean, f=
or=20
most of the time, he only has seven pok=E9mon, which is not a very high numb=
er.=20
The point is, he develops a friendly relationship with the ones he has. He=
=20
truly cares for them. Plus, there are many cases where he decides not to=20
catch one as opposed to helping it out with a problem. The second movie als=
o=20
shows the hazards of catching em all. This pok=E9mon collector, Jirarudan=20
(Lawrence III in the English version) is so obsessed with these legendary=20
pok=E9mon that he seeks them out to capture. However, one is not supposed t=
o=20
capture them, as they hold the elements of the world together. By disturbin=
g=20
them, he disturbs the world's balance, which causes snow storms,=20
thunderstorms, etc. all over the world. If you ask me, the Pok=E9mon series=
is=20
kind of the anti-commercialism to the series.

Wha??? I have never seen an episode like that (and believe me, I know this=20
anime). The majority of episodes have adults in it. The closest I can thin=
k=20
of is when Pikachu starts choking and they find a hospital, but it's not=20
deserted. It has a doctor, and they don't look up medicine on the computer,=
=20
that's for sure. Could it be that you were seeing Digimon (Bandai's copy of=
=20
Pok=E9mon) instead?
> Also, wasn't Pokemon the show that was causing kids to go into seizures i=

December 4, 1997 is a day that will live in infamy for the Pok=E9mon franchi=
se.=20
The series was very popular and seemed to be gaining popularity. Then, the=
=20
infamous episode 38, "Electric Soldier Porygon," was shown. Some missile=20
were launched in that episode inside a computer (the plot's kind of hard to=20
explain). To avoid them, Pikachu uses his electricity to take out one of=20
them. Apparently, the explosion reflect on one of the walls, causing an=20
intense flashing which caused the seizures. This is the ONLY time it=20
happened, and what you may not know is that this incident resulted in the=20
cancellation of the series for four months and the episode in question was=20
banned worldwide. In April, 1998, the show was given the green light, and,=20
despite this major setback, became enormously popular again. Judge Pok=E9mo=
n=20
as you will, but I view it as a fun and very nice little series (the movies=20
are great too... in Japanese).

Hear, hear!!
The cartoon reminded me of Yellow Submarine on a bad acid day:-)
Definately not the stimulus I would want MY kids exposed to.

Oh, I think I would have to go with Star Blazers or Speed Racer. (Now THAT
was a cool cartoon!!). One thing that really gets me, tho, is that no one
ever seems to remember Ultraman. Yeah, that was live action, similar in
quality to Godzilla, but a kick, nonetheless.

Ah, yes, I forgot about all the pok=E9mon that only fight. I mean, that's=20
their purpose, right? The game is about the battles and such. About=20
strategy. The series and movie are mostly about friendship and the powers o=

Yup, anywho, the Ottawa Citizen(there website is
http://www.ottawacitizen.com) gave X-MEN 2 1/2 stars on 5, they give every
action movie a low score. I remember the world is not enough, they gave it
about 2 stars. go to their site and if they still have it, look for arts
section and read the review of X-MEN, they say it was bad, I know that they
might have it, I read it in today's paper and they usually post all the news
on their site, every section.

I'm going to the 11:15 show. And that's the earliest I could get in (bought
the ticket at 9:30). I don't think we have any doubt about what the number 1

Just got back. It's 1:25 AM where I am. X-Men, though not perfect, was very
cool. Lots of in jokes, and lots of action. Downsides: a lot of the various
characters' stories are not right, but the movie was good enough for that to
be forgivable. Thumbs up.

Sorry to disappoint, Wader, but Mr Smith Goes To Washington was
indeed remade, as none other than a 'Billy Jack' movie. You'll
remember Billy Jack if you remember the 70's. He was a kung fu
kickin' Oregon boy who fought for the injuns and the innocent while
preaching a peacelovin' stance and tall black hats.
And he was perhaps the worst actor ever seen. Billy Jack Goes To
Washington is available at most reputable video stores, and is
unwatchable crap.

That's surprising to hear someone say that Mewtwo Strikes Back is worse than=

Pikachu's Summer Vacation. I stand by my accusations. Pok=E9mon trainers=20
don't force their creatures to fight. If you followed the show, you'd know=20

Oops, forgot to mention this. Pok=E9mon are only bound to their trainers by=

friendship. They are not "imprisoned" in the pok=E9balls, because they can=20
leave them at any time, not just when they're called out. They usually stay=

Can I just say, for all of us who have lives that involve things of
importance, for those of us born without tails, for those of us who
don't list on our "things to do" list the words "ask mom to buy buy
latest pokemon video", for those of us who don't need Prozac to be

really big TV shows and for those of us over 9 years of age....
WHO THE **** CARES ABOUT THIS CRAP?!?!?!
Q: What's the difference between a homeless guy and a subscriber to
this list?
A: The homelss guy wishes he had a roof over his head. The list
subscriber wishes he had a roof over his mouth.
This list used to be a forum of informed discussion of film, with
lengthy intelligent debate on all things cinematic. Now all it seems
to be is arguments on the relative merits of Pokemon, forwarded (and
very much unwanted) java celebrity polls, groundbreaking opinions
that Wolverine is 'kick ass' and four word replies to the list that
could have been sent in private. Am I allowed to participate in the
list as an adult or do I need a Pikachu doll and a Wolverine
lunchbox to qualify? If we don't get some actual film discussion
here soon I'm going to have to pack up and leave it to the Britney
fans.
As for Jed, one of the mental giants who seem to believe the world
revolves around a cartoon, he states "and if you keep making these
statements about PokΘmon, I will keep rejecting them." How about
this, Jed? How about they make their statements and you go beat
yourself about the head with your Gameboy until you understand what
reality feels like. Then go see what us adults like to call a
"film". They generally don't involve superheroes or cartoons or
merchandising, they have actual stories.
You know what stories are don't you? Like the story your mom told
you about the guy who would find out where you live, hunt you down
and beat you to death with your puppy because you WOULDN'T SHUT UP
ABOUT BLOODY POKEMON!
You're not people. You're a pod. I've had my rant now. Who thinks
Freddie Prinze Jr is a great actor? Oh, look at all the hands. Pass
the gun.
