I saw Galaxy Quest (after being shut out to every other movie) the other day
(most disappointedly at the time) and ended up really loving it! It was
really funny, and my smile didn't leave my face the whole time! A lot of
the jokes are really cute and clever and really recommend it to anyone
looking for a good clean laugh. :)

Hey, great! Glad to see someone else who liked it. It's very funny and
really pleasantly enjoyable. It's very lighthearted and maybe two curse
words in the whole thing. Great family movie at least, too..

Subject: [MV] Fantasia 2000 review
Loved it! What an experience - more than a movie - it's an
experience. This is not a film that you wait for video - you should
definitely try to catch this one at the IMAX where it will be playing
exclusively until April. The animation is beautiful and vibrant and the
music is well selected and played. There is a lot of emotion in these
songs and the animators did a wonderful job in visualizing these emotions -
the whale scene being the most amazing piece of animation that I have ever
experienced. Being on the IMAX makes a huge difference as you are on
visual overload. The sound system at the IMAX is perfect as well (with a
nice demo at the beginning on where they are all located!). There are some
nice cameos too as there are some live action bits in between the
animations (also - stay until the very, very end of the credits for a free
joke!). I can't stress enough how much fun it was to watch this movie. I
had to keep reminding myself that the music came first and then the
animation because many times it felt like the reverse was true! I was in
awe throughout the entire movie. It's not often that that happens! Go
check out Fantasia 2000 if you get the chance and you shouldn't be
disappointed! A 95%.
Tons of great movies out there - collect them all!
Fantasia 2000 - 95%
Being John Malkovich - 95%
Cradle Will Rock - 93%
Magnolia - 92%
Toy Story 2 - 91%
First time ever that the 5 best movies are all above 90%!!
Also see this movie if you want some serious laughs-
Galaxy Quest - 88% - I swear that this is a funny movie - honest!!

Subject: [MV] The Girl Interrupted the Supernova Hurricane reviews
Three movies this weekend - one was amazing and the other two were
duds. Any guesses as to which pile Supernova belongs to?
Hurricane - This one's the champ. A very inspiring and motivating true
story about a wrongly accused and sentenced black boxer in the 60's and
70's. The director, Norman Jewison really put this film together nicely
with a very subtle approach. Denzel honestly puts a fine show on as the
dignified non-criminal. I was happy to discover that there was more to the
story than just a wrongly accused man trying to prove his innocence -
because although it is a true story - we've seen it all before. There is a
great side-plot with some Canadians that are truly inspiring (as Canadians
usually are:-) All in all this is another high scoring film - 94%.
Girl, Interrupted - I heard that the only way out - was each other - but I
found that the exit was a preferred alternate. It is tough being the
Movieman because I have seen so many movies and therefore can see when a
movie has been done better before - when it was called One Flew Over the
Cuckoo's Nest. This film is very pedantic - i.e. step one: girl is crazy
(interrupted); step two: girl goes to asylum and is afraid; step three:
girl befriends others at asylum; step four: girl comes to understand why
she's crazy. Nothing new here. Fail.
Supernova - You have to be wary of Alan Smithee. He's the name they slap
on a film if the director disowns a film due to too much meddling by the
producers. Fortunately Supernova wasn't directed by Alan Smithee - it was
directed by Thomas Lee. Unfortunately Thomas Lee is the new Alan Smithee
of the film industry. Looks like Alan is on vacation. Walter Hill is the
actual director of Supernova but decided to disown it. It is said that
Francis Ford Coppola made the final edit on this ridiculous
mess. Regardless of who did what - it's still a pile of
crap. Eighty-eight minutes of what non-science fiction fans think science
fiction is all about! If you can't stand the heat - get out of the
theatre! Fail.
For those of you who go to the movies only once or twice a year and the
film you see happens to be crappy - then go right now to the theatre and
catch any of these amazing movies!
Fantasia 2000 - 95%
Being John Malkovich - 95%
Hurricane - 94%
Cradle Will Rock - 93%
Magnolia - 92%
Toy Story 2 - 91%
Galaxy Quest - 88% - (still funny!)

ANY GIVEN SUNDAY - Natural Born Ladykillers

Those crazy Blair Witch folks at Artisan Entertainment are at it again. Now
they've put out a casting call for "unrecognizable talent." In a surprise
move, Denise Richards sent over a head shot until her agent gently suggested
she misunderstood the question.
Game 1: the Miami Sharks meet the Toledo Colorblinders. The Sharks turn off
the lights when the TC's unique blue/green uniforms are shown to clash
distractingly for all but 10 percent of the male population.
Finally, I catch up with Any Given Sunday, director Oliver Stone's ode to
pigskin and pigs who chase skin. Yes, there are bruisers on the field and
babes in the stands, God bless 'em. Any movie kicking off with tribal rhythms,
lightning flashes, and Vince Lombardi quotes is bound to spawn a self-help
desk-calendar and end with alpha-males carrying their dates out by the hair.
In addition to his director's duties, Oliver also plays a sports announcer for
Al Pacino's football team, the Miami Sharks, thus giving him one more way to
keep score when he's not scoring. Clocking in at close to three hours,
director Ollie needs to mind the timer. Can I call a time-out?
There's a conspiracy in the huddle. Jamie Foxx, the quarterback, is changing
plays. What's more, someone spotted a wide receiver on the grassy knoll and
the Cuban, CIA, and Mafia teams are all suspects. As the pass rang out, doubts
arose that the quarterback acted alone, and somehow, Nixon's to blame.
Hey, this is a pretty good movie! And if Football sounds this good with a Rap
soundtrack, then imagine what Jay Z can do for Golf!
Is there a quake on? The Jiffy-Pop cam shooting this flick slips and slides
and darts and jiggles non-stop! No wonder the quarterback pukes before every
play: It's motion sickness. Oliver, try mounting a new gyroscope, or whatever
you call that cute Production Assistant. How is it we can get clear shots of
far-off galaxies but Pacino's face looks like a smudged, hot-headed Italian
raisin, albeit a raisin with a home in Malibu?
In trademark style, Pacino screams and raves like a sonofabitch. He's one
anger management class removed from Dustin Hoffman. If temper were an orgasm,
Al could play with the NBA. When Al blows his top Fred Flintstone screams
"Yabadabadoo!"
Cameron Diaz is the brassy bad-ass broad who inherited the team from her daddy
and who'd rather sell it than wear a bra. Come on! She's too cute to be so
bitchy. You just want to squeeze her cheeks: All four of them.
Game 2: the Miami Sharks meet the Key West DandyLads. The Sharks out-style
the DandyLads who, after every fumble, personally tidy the field and retreat to
the locker room to change tired, soiled garments.
Ann-Margret is Cameron's wacky mom, and she's wearing the same fake eyelashes
she used to bat at Sidney Poitier to keep him cool back in the '60s. That's
not EstΘe Lauder on those lashes, that's quick-dry black paint! Them lashes
tote six-packs in the skybox and serve as handy wall-hooks for pop-tops. I
know this gal used to be hot, but nowadays she's seducing a can of Dutch-Boy.
Forget the makeup remover, pass the paint thinner.
Saved by the Bell and Showgirls alum Elizabeth Berkeley returns with head held
embarrassingly high for a role as a high-priced call girl who shows her boobs
long enough for me to place the face.
I know why the Sharks keep winning. It's not talent. It's the stink-awful
color schemes of their competitors' uniforms. These guys are printing block
letters on picnic tablecloths! In three out of four plays, ants scurried away
with the ball.
In case you've forgotten what wooden acting in Cinemascope looks like, Charlton
Heston drops by, freshly painted and tented for termites. Chuck's the Football
Commissioner and also in scenes from Ben Hur on Pacino's big screen TV. Hey
Al, didn't you notice the commissioner looks just like that guy in Ben Hur?
Could it be...a conspiracy?

Subject: [MV] Bone Collector in Double Jeopardy reviews
Just a coupla quick reviews of some movies on their way out of the
multiplexes and into the cheap-o-plexes.
Double Jeopardy is a great movie-of-the-moment. Don't try to analyze any
of it afterwards as it'll fall apart - but during the movie you can
actually have a lot of fun watching this female version of the
Fugitive. Lots of tense action scenes centred around beauty Ashley Judd as
she tracks down her thought to be dead husband while her parole officer,
Tommy Lee Jones, is in hot pursuit. Fun - 81%.
Bone Collector was definitely more grown up but starred the seemingly twin
sister of Ashley Judd - Angelina Jolie - whose big smile may take the crown
away from Julia Roberts. Jolie plays a cop who wants off the streets but
is thrust into action as a crime scene analyzer with the assistance of a
bed-ridden Washington. This is a fun, tense puzzle that is very
satisfyingly put together. Some scenes are not for the squeamish but this
is definitely above average Hollywood thriller material. 86%.
Two movies in the eighties and neither of them make the best of the best list:
Fantasia 2000 - 95% - in total awe!
Being John Malkovich - 95% - crazy - see it or be doomed
Hurricane - 94% - motivating and inspiring
Cradle Will Rock - 93% - lots of talent and lots of heart
Magnolia - 92% - a multi-character, multi-story-line kind of movie
Toy Story 2 - 91% - funny, good story, see it
Galaxy Quest - 88% - (still funny!)

When I was just a kid I saw this movie but I never found out in the
following years what its title was. This movie must be from the 80s.
It's about this woman who lives in this house, and during the movie, a
bunch of robots takes over her house and they keep the woman in hostage
or something like that....
I also remember two scenes.
In one the lady lies on the kitchentable and these robots and stuff are
doing things with her, can't remember what, while the woman is sleeping
or in a coma,....
In another scene, a guy, I suppose her boyfriend or her husband, arrives
with a truck, a 4X4 I guess, in front of the house but a videocamera in
front of the door sees him and shoots him with a laser or something.....
I know this isn't much, but I was like 8 years old. If someone knows
what film this is, let me know, I'm trying to figger it out for quite a
while now.....
thx

I forget the title, too, but the man I believe is Robert Vaughn (Napoleon
Solo fr. Man from U.N.C.L.E.) and the plot is about an electronic house that
takes control of their lives. It (the house) ends up impregnating her and
she gives birth to a half electronic half human baby in the end.

Is Galaxy Quest okay for kids? I know its rated PG. But I recently took
my son to see Bicenntinal Man (AWFUL!) and there were about 3 cuss words in
it (GD being on of them!) Just wanted to check how appropriate this movie
is for kids.
Thanks!!!

Must have been Demon Seed, from 1977, based on the Dean Koontz novel.
An actually good horror movie, although certainly dated - especially
the computers.

Might it have been a tv episode? Twilight Zone? Ray Bradbury theater?
There is an old popular Bradbury story that is along the lines of electric
houses, called "I Sing the Body Electric"... ring a bell?

It's easily appropriate for kids. I think Tim Allen says GD once near the
start. (Maybe? someone else might remember) I'm really not sure about that,
but I don't think there were any other cuss words in it at all. Not even
fully sure about that one. Violence is cartoony and not much where it is, no
sex or nudity (although Weaver's cleavage is a running joke a couple of
times) or gore.
Certainly more appropriate for kids than bicentennial man, although that is
not that adult to me even (well, ok some cussing and some adult-ish - but tv
acceptable situations I suppose)
Its a good family movie, but if you doubt me ask around til you get the
specs on that. i can understand not wanting your kids to see some of the
garbage out of hollywood these days, especially when you get ambushed by it
when you arent expecting it.
How old r ur kids? if over 12, this is probably ok, although i'm not sure
they would get a lot of the jokes in it..

Subject: [MV] MovieJuice! - PLAY IT TO THE BONE - Oscar De La Ho-Hum
PLAY IT TO THE BONE - Oscar De La Ho-Hum
by Mark Ramsey
January 21, 2000
full review!
http://www.moviejuice.com/2000/playittothebone.htm
I mean, if the century-long history of cinema ends just before this steaming pile
of silver screen refuse fans its stultifying fumes in the direction of audiences
nationwide, would that be so bad?
Play it to the Bone is a boxing movie opening with two guys in two beds with two
babes each. What a recruitment poster for boxing! "If you're gonna love, wear a
golden glove." If the U.S. Army used tactics like this to sign recruits,
reveille would come early and often, if you know what I'm saying.
One of these guys is Robert Wagner. Come on! RJ hasn't man-handled a two-on-one
since the year his hair stylist swapped Brylcreem for Kiwi Brown shoe polish.
RJ's head is so buffed, glossed, and spit-polished, traffic choppers mistake the
glare for a star on the walk of fame. What's that natural tint, RJ, spice or
berry? Oh, we'll never know.
Play it to the Bone is the latest from sports-obsessed writer/director Ron
Shelton. Ron's made movies about basketball, golf, and now boxing. Can
synchronized swimming be far behind?
This is also the latest in the proud tradition of road pictures. "There have
been any number of road films that take place between L.A. and Las Vegas," says
Shelton, "but none of them ever really show the road." Excellent point, Ron!
Maybe that's because that particular road is short on twists, turns, and dramatic
arcs, not to mention scenery. As a result, dialogue leans on "geological
striations," tapping that rich vein of earth science comedy familiar to any fan
of the Discovery Channel Comedy Jam.
Fresh from the fast lane between Vegas and obscurity, Lolita Davidovich joins
Woody Harrelson and Antonio Banderas. It's two washed up fighters and the woman
who loved them hopping into her bad-ass, lime-green 1972 Olds convertible
muscle-car for the trek to Sin City. Okay, it's not lime-green, it's
"sassy-grass" green, says Lolita. Look, I don't care if it's Lorne Greene, it's
still a yawner. Aren't there any signs on the route to Vegas reading "Wrong Way,
Go Back"?
"It smells like freedom," says Lolita as she sniffs her fresh-checked motor oil.
True enough, if your freedom has a viscosity rating of 10W-30 and is deadly to
wildlife when a tanker full of it hits a rock.
Woody and Antonio are welterweight boxers, although they look more like
paper-weights to me, maybe water-weights depending on their cycles.
And after a lengthy commute to Vegas, Woody and Antonio proceed to beat the
bloody hell out of each other for most of hour two. Meanwhile, five minutes into
the fight you can tell how it's going to go. And you can tell you don't care.
What a pounding these guys take! And I don't just mean the audience. After nine
rounds, Woody's brow takes on Boris Karloffian proportions and Antonio's blubbery
face resembles a Tommy Lee Jones life-mask. Any more head-swelling and these two
could body-double for UFO crash victims.
A keen eye will spot supporting player Richard Masur, who cleverly leveraged bit
parts like Tom Cruise's Princeton recruiter in Risky Business into the pole
position at the Screen Actor's Guild. Richard's back in the acting trenches now
that he's been succeeded at SAG by William Daniels, a.k.a. Kit the Knight Rider
car. Be on the lookout for a new Knight Rider movie, where Kit becomes the most
celebrated Pontiac Firebird ever to negotiate more equitable commercial residuals
for SAG members. Check the bumper sticker: "I brake for collective bargaining."
Righteous, Kit!
"Playing it to the bone" means "giving it all you've got," or at least giving it
as much as you've got to work with, and that's not too much here.
Everyone who owes director/writer Shelton a favor is pictured here. You got
Costner, you got Snipes, you got Tony Curtis, you got Buddy Greco, you got Steve
and Edie. You've got that slot machine and it's your slot machine and you're the
Sultan of Slots and if anybody tries to steal it you're going to kick their ass
with your disgusting, coin-black fingers.
From the first word of dialogue to final cut, creating Play it to the Bone took a
measly six months. This movie doesn't belong in the theater, it belongs in
prenatal intensive care, wired to an IV and locked in an oxygen tent! Call me
when it's old enough to breast-feed.
Rocky it ain't, but "rocky" it is.
In this corner, Oscar De La Ho-Hum.

hey you
your review was as helpful as asking a real magnolia to review the movie.
your english is getting too far out and its allusions and suchstuff are
extremely annoying. i shant even brother to write a proper complaint to you
cos you would just slag me off with a smartass word
i dont think you have any feelings to hurt except for that overpowering
jolie i want to fuck you drive. thats disgusting. and pathetic. i would
encourage you to go for it but that would scar jolie for life.
mr ramsey you are getting worse by the minute. are you mutating into a big
penised hyena with a very foul mouth? or are you one already?
MY REPLY:
Listen you, I can't believe you're bitching over an absolute rave review. You
didn't even see the movie, did you? DID YOU? Do you think I made up Tom
Cruise's dialogue just because you didn't hear Mary Hart say it first? If I
could make up dialogue that good I wouldn't be writing to you unless you went
through my agent, that's for sure.
Would it surprise you to know that Paul Anderson himself - the writer/director of
this movie - is a fan of MovieJuice.com and loved the review? Okay, it would
surprise me too, but it's POSSIBLE - that's my point.
You can say what you want, but when you criticize my unrequited passion for
Angelina Jolie, you go one step too far. Being a guy who imagines making it with
Angie makes me one thing and one thing only: Normal. Nothing I can do would
scar Angie for life because, from what I can tell, she's already severely
scarred, God bless her.
You're right; my English is getting too far out. By the way, it's spelled
"shan't." Stop watching those Merchant-Ivory movies.
Thanks for your note.

THE MOVIEJUICE.COM AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION QUIZ
Here are the results from last week's quiz:
"Thanks to Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, May-December nuptials are
all the rage. Which of these is next?"
Lauren Bacall and Freddie Prinze Jr. - 39%
Hedy Lamarr and Haley Joel Osment - 19%
Hume Cronyn and Jonathan Lipnicki - 42%
No doubt the reason for Hedy and Haley's poor showing was that Hedy died right in
the middle of my quiz, meaning not only that these statistics are biased and
unreliable, but that I might have actually killed her! Haley Joel Osment requests
that condolences be sent directly to Lauren Bacall and Hume Cronyn.
Is this what Haley meant by "seeing dead people"?
This week, visit http://www.moviejuice.com and take the Warren Beatty quiz.
Warren's getting an award at the Oscars this year, guess what it is!

It's totally fine for kids - and you'll have a great time too! really
really PG - and very funny! It's like watching a Star Trek show. I highly
recommend this flick to anyone - and I thought it was gonna be crappy based
on the previews!!

Robert Vaughn plays the voice of the computer. The man and his wife are
Julie Christie & Fritz Weaver. Pretty scary movie with some rather intense
scenes. 1977
