BEST & WORST MOVIES OF 1999
1999 was a banner year for movies, both in terms of box office
receipts and the number of high-quality movies. A total of 18
movies earned ratings of 4 stars or higher from FlickPicks voters.
In alphabetical order, they were:
All About My Mother
American Beauty
Fantasia 2000 (tentative)
For Love Of The Game
The Green Mile
The Insider
The Iron Giant
The Matrix
Message In A Bottle
Notting Hill
October Sky
Run Lola Run
Runaway Bride
The Sixth Sense
The Straight Story
Tarzan
Toy Story 2
The Winslow Boy
The 18 "winners" include two foreign films (All About My Mother and
Run Lola Run) and four animated features (Fantasia 2000, The Iron
Giant, Tarzan and Toy Story 2).
ON THE OTHER HAND ............
1999 includeed its share of stinkers, as well. A number of high-
profile movies (Wild Wild West, for example) earned only 2 stars
from FlickPicks participants, but an "unlucky seven" managed to
achieve only a paltry 1.5 stars -- meaning that almost nobody liked
them. In alphabetical order, these unfortunates were:
Baby Geniuses
Black Mask
Goodbye Lover
The Mod Squad
The Rage: Carrie 2
Superstar
Universal Soldier: The Return

Subject: [MV] Cradle Will Rock review
After a dizzying week of Oscar potential movies I had the pleasure of
starting off the new year with the best of the bunch - Cradle Will Rock -
directed by Tim Robbins. The cast is unbelievable - Emily Watson, Hank
Azaria, John Tuturro, Ruben Blades, John Cuzack, Joan Cuzack, Bill Murray
and many more. This is the (mostly) true story of theatre in 1936 and how
a new play that deals with social issues is handled. After seeing many
movies last week I found that they all lacked what this movie had an
abundance of - heart. A very moving motion picture with a lot of smiles
and bucket loads to talk about after the film. A rousing 93% for this
inspiring and well directed tale.
Start off the new year by investing your time and money on one of these
fine films...
Being John Malkovich - 95% (first time ever that movieman has raised his
ranking!)
Cradle Will Rock - 93%
Magnolia - 92%
Toy Story 2 - 91%
Galaxy Quest - 88% - I swear that this is a funny movie - honest!!
The World Is Not Enough - 87%

Howdy all.
I've been away for awhile and I haven't been here to see if this rumour
has surfaced on this list yet, so I'm putting it to you.
While at work last night, I read through a tv viewing guide which came
with one of the Sunday papers here in Queensland. Lo and behold, I came
across a bit of gos for the next SW prequel. It's rumoured that an Oz
soap star by the name of Jesse Spencer is to play Anikin Skywalker in Ep
2. Just wondering if anyone else had heard anything to support or
dispute this.
Thanks
TeckerDaze.
PS - if anyone is interested in seeing the actual article, I can scan a
copy and post it out to those interested. T.

The latest rumor I have heard is that both Jonathon Jackson and Jonathon
Brandis has been mentioned as being cast in the Anakin Role. Although
nothing has been confirmed yet, George Lucas insists that casting for the
role of Anakin in the next Star Wars movie will not begin until January 1.

Just out of curiosity - who exactly have been rumoured to play Anakin?
Please add to the list.
Leonardo Di Caprio (please - NO!)
Jesse Spencer
Jonathon Jackson
Jonathon Brandis
Any one else?

For too long recently I have been just sitting on the sidelines and not =
participating, but now I feel it is again time to enter the affray with =
a list of my favourite and most hated films of 99. Please remember that =
some titles in my selection may appear older than 99 but being from the =
U.K, they never hit our shores till then. So, in reverse order here is =
what I consider the best of last year.
10) A bugs life------ I am not a fan of Disney and I get rather =
annoyed when people decribe films as "one for the whole family" as this =
usually turns out to be far from the case as the usual childish junk =
begins to run........but not in the case of this film. I thought it was =
far better than Toy Story and quite funny. Kevin Spacey proves he can =
turn in an excellent performance even when it's just his voice on show =
(for want of a better term) and so this slides into my top ten mainly =
because it was such an unexpectedly pleasant suprise.
9)Festen (The celebration) A Danish film concerning a family get =
together for a couples wedding anniversary. During the occassion the =
eldest son accuses his father of sexually abusing him as well as his =
brothers and sisters. Is he telling the truth? Is the respectable =
father (now grandfather) really capable of such horror or has his son =
suffered some sort of breakdown?
Shot under the Dogma 95 rules this film is quite harrowing and moving =
and the truth of the matter does not get revealed until the end. A =
telling tale of a family under pressure.
8)The sixth sense------ You all know what this is about. A good =
performance from the kid is part of what makes this creepy tale work. I =
guessed the twist 15 minutes in but this did not stop me from enjoying =
it........I was only looking for the twist because I knew there was one, =
dammnammitt!
7)My name is Joe------True, this may have been released late 98 but I =
never saw it till last year. Ken Loach again proves he is one of =
Britain's greatest directors with this return to form tale of an =
recovering alcoholic who runs a (terrible) football team for ex drug =
addicts. As with my number one film of the year this shows Brit cinema =
at it's finest with it's mix of humour and pathos i.e it's true to life.
Joe starts an affair with a health visitor and just when life seems to =
be going good again he is dragged into the seedy world of drugs when one =
of his players gets into trouble with the local gangster. A fantastic =
film.
6) Rushmore------This falls into a certain category of films for =
me.......the type that when you are watching it, it is reasonably =
enjoyable but it is only later when scenes refuse to leave your head =
that you realise how good the film really is. Good performances all =
round and a brilliant soundtrack.
5)Bulworth--------Funny and quite poignant, Warren Beatty has made a =
film that shows the fault with politics. A one joke film that works =
well.
4) This years love------ The story of three men and women who =
throughout a period of time have sexual relationships with each other. =
Not as straight forward and predictable as it sounds this film has quite =
a downbeat ending on most counts but is also extremely amusing =
throughout.
3) Go-----Doug Liman tops "Swingers" with this teen Pulp Fiction tale. =
Quick moving, clever and never boring.=20
2) American History X-------This is the only version we've got. The =
Directors cut that has yet to appear (if ever) could be better but it =
doesn't really matter as this is still a very powerful film. Good =
performances all round and Stacey keach is a very slimy villain. =
Excellent without resorting to the usual "gee black people are all =
really nice" statement. Lets face facts.....blacks are just as slimy =
and nasty as your average white, chinese, indian or whatever.
1) Orphans-------Peter Mullan (star of My name is Joe) directs this =
story of four people coming to terms with the death of their elderly =
mother. This film has it all.......dark humour, surrealness(is this a =
word?), drama and sadness. It is quite sad to think that the only =
reason this film saw the light of day was because Mullan won the best =
actor award for "My name is Joe" at Cannes. One of my all time =
favourites. A classic.
Honourable mentions go to the following films----- Cruel intentions, =
Very bad things,You're friends and neighbours,Little voice and Life is =
beautiful.
The Worst------
5) Hideous Kinky------ Kate Winslett flees to Morrocco with her two =
children and apart from that bugger all else happens. A very boring =
film from the director who only a few years before made the brilliant =
"Small Faces".
4) Star Trek Insurrection----- I am not a Trek fan but have watched =
all the films. This is one that many people who do love the series, =
agree that it is nothing but an extended t.v episode.
3) The Phantom menace---- I do not love Star wars. I loved it as a =
kid but consider the original and it's sequels as some of the most =
overrated films of all time. Yes, they were groundbreaking but nothing =
more.....special effects do not make a great movie. Much to my glee, =
the majority of Star wars fans were very dissapointed in "menace" and =
claimed it was far too childish.........but were'nt the originals!!! =
The villains are underused, Ewan Macgregor sounds more like Roger Moore =
most of the time than Alec Guiness, The Jedi prove to be a cowardly lot =
(for one example going two on one with Darth Maul) and to cop the lot =
the last duel scene has all the tension or excitement stolen from it by =
intercutting Anakin's space fighter attack. Very poor.
2) Virus------ Another horror film bites the dust. A reasonable idea =
for a scare flick is ruined by the cliched plot and sad =
characterisation. Annoying!
1) The Haunting------Take a classic 1960's film by Robert Wise,add =
unneccessary special effects and a change a decent plot into one with a =
crap denouncement that only some imbecile would think was original and =
what you have left is one of the most cinematic abortions of the 90's =
(after Armageddon!). Unbearably bad!
Well that's my round up. I look forward to any comments or =
queries.......and undoubtably criticism but their my choices, so there!
Yours
Gerry T.

Hats off to Mr Gregg Araki who is either a cracked genius, deliberately =
making daft movies and laughing all the way to the bank, or, more likely =
(in my opinion) the Ed Wood Jr of the 90's (and possibly 00's)

Amen, brother! I wholeheartedly agree with you on this piece of junk, Gerry.
I think the only thing I got a kick out of was the one girl's so-called
reenactment of the excorcism scene from The Exorcist, and even that was
rather bland, which goes along with the movie as a whole that you point out.
Helen Mirren exuded guile and menace pretty well, but she was given little
or nothing to do with her skills. The movie is pretty dull and predictable.
I've come to think that the majority of the plot after the halfway point is
simply to end up with a little joke between a couple of characters at the
movie's end. I won't spoil it although it is not good enough to frame your
plot around. I never could just figure out what I was supposed to think of
this movie... was it trying to be horror? teen angst? black comedy? teen
angst horror or teen angst black comedy? Well, I don't even care about that
anymore. So, Mr. Kevin "I'm not a writer, I'm a screen writer" Williamson,
stick to Dawson's Creek and stay off the silver screen, you hack!

I have no idea! It seems like the movie was going to get to a reason, but it
never did! I guess she was just plain mean, but they were so darned
ambiguous about it, you can't completely be sure!
Oh, another thing, I don't think I've seen so many arrow-in-the-air pov
shots since Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves, and it was barely novel in that
movie! How many times do we get that shot here...4? 5? One would have been
too many.

MAGNOLIA - Flower Power
by Mark Ramsey
January 9, 2000
<a href="http://www.moviejuice.com/2000/magnolia.htm">Click here for the full
review!</a>
http://www.moviejuice.com/2000/magnolia.htm
I missed the advance screenings for Magnolia - I was nursing my addiction to
E!'s Mysteries and Scandals. Where else can get you the lowdown on the
mysterious circumstances of William Desmond Taylor's murder in 1922? Who?
What?
I'd better watch what I say. Host A.J. Benza is the only guy at E! who can
kick my ass or get his tube socks in a knot trying.
I do believe I've just experienced one of the best movies I'll ever see.
Magnolia is the first great movie of the 21st century. Okay, it's also the
first movie of the 21st century, but let's not split hairs. Hey Hollywood,
notice has been served: Consider the bar officially raised.
I was uneasy about seeing this flick at first, what with all the comparisons
to Robert Altman's Short Cuts. I hated that movie, interweaving plots and
all. That's despite the most engagingly distracting sequence in movie
history: Bottomless natural redhead Julianne Moore rants and raves in a
scene longer than Tom Hank's attack on Omaha Beach and significantly more
satisfying on a strictly prurient level.
Of course, an attack is always easier when the shrapnel is light and the bush
is heavy. And this particular bush is heavy enough to obscure several
infantry divisions and the entire Pacific fleet. In fact, J. Crew is opening
a Julianne Moore collection to compliment its cashmere shop thanks to
abundant oversupply and the nouveau elegance of easy-to-wash natural red
fibers.
With Magnolia, Julianne's back - bottoms up.
Magnolia's from the unnervingly talented Paul Anderson, the Boogie Nights
guy. And also main squeeze to that diva of dysfunction, Fiona Apple.
Amazingly, Paul didn't lean on Fiona for his soundtrack - a remarkably
restrained move and a lesson to all future directors of movies featuring
Jewel. Instead, the music honor goes to former Til Tuesday songstress Aimee
Mann. Unlike everyone in the LA I know, everyone in this movie LA is a
Mann-fan and they break out in a chorus of Aimee Karaoke at about the
mid-point. You know you're in an alternate universe when Aimee's lyrics are
as well-known as Aretha Franklin's. Is this hitmaker Aimee Aguilera? If so,
I've got a genie for your bottle.
USA Today reports that when director/writer Anderson approached George C.
Scott for a role in Magnolia, George angrily tossed the script across the
room in disgust. Perhaps George was possessed by the same demon that
compelled him to sign on for Exorcist III. Was George holding out for
another gig opposite talking dolphins?
Magnolia blasts off like a rocket and keeps on going. Some movies are three
hours long and others just feel that way. These three hours fly by quicker
than a Spice Girl marriage and without any of the bitter aftertaste.
The tangy role here goes to Tom Cruise, a self-help guru who's the Tony
Robbins of the frat-house, the prince of poontang, the siren of slimeballs,
the commandant of cunnilingus. "Respect the cock and tame the cunt,"
preaches Tom, a credible spokesman if ever there was one.
Lifestyle Coach Tom's seminar topic: "How to turn your 'friend' into your
sperm receptacle." Look out, no pussy has nine lives when Tom puts the
testes in testosterone. He's Napoleon Boner-parte fighting the battle of the
bush, air-humping with that most deadly of weapons, the Cruise missile. It's
over the top, boys and girls, and it's a bravura turn from a terrific actor.
Tom could teach a thing or two to the feckless pharmacist who fills a
bazillion scrips for Julianne Moore and mouth-farts perhaps the worst pickup
line of all time: "Been on Prozac long?" Oops! Been single and lonely
long, dude?
How can you not like a movie that uses real phone numbers like 818-725-4424
instead of abjectly fake ones beginning with "555" designed to prevent idiots
like me from inquisitively calling and harassing hapless Angelinos. You'd
think these ritzy rich studios could afford to buy a couple of phone numbers
for the sake of frickin' credibility, no? Thank you, Paul Anderson, for
pointing the way!
There's also the subplot of the genius kid in the quiz show - the damn
toughest quiz show of all time! Question: "Imagine you're attending a jam
session of Classical composers...." Holy God, are you kidding? The kid has
to sing an opera to correctly answer the question. Is this show designed to
appeal to the same dunderheaded populace bewitched by spinning wheels,
twirling letters, and nitwitted instant millionaires? This movie is not the
latest Dirty Harry epic: Magnolia Force!
Magnolia peaks on a bad weather day for humans but a really good one for
amphibian predators. It's raining cats and dogs ... and frogs. Yes,
fly-eating hail is toppling from the heavens. How many movies feature a
Biblical-style plague, not counting the one called the "Ernest" series? Is
this some kind of insidious Budweiser product placement? Where was this
divine intervention when we were force-fed The Haunting?
Usually, heavenly intercession involves the parting of seas, not the plopping
of amphibians. Forget the coasters, folks, just set out lilly pads and lets
get toady! LA's the world capital of toady, after all. And if you're Mickey
Rourke, a frog-shower is certainly better than none at all.
I can't begin to describe what Magnolia is about; it will disarm and
overwhelm you. From the intertwined threads of simple, everyday life,
Magnolia braids a tapestry of overpowering mastery, stunning in its impact.
An opus of loss, loneliness, and love, redemption, revelation, and
reconciliation. A choir of synchronicity. Snuggle up to this movie and you
won't be disappointed.
Magnolia is, to paraphrase James Agee, a queerly toned, unique little reed.
But out of it comes one incredible melody.
