I once saw a musical, I think of the 1930-1940 vintage, that contained a
huge "cast of thousands" dance number set on the deck of a battleship.
Sounds like identifying the picture ought to be comparatively easy but I
haven't been able to do so. Can anyone save my sanity by letting me know
the probable name of that picture? It's really been bugging me. Russ

I'm trying to think of a movie, and all I have is a fragmented memory of a clip.
In it there is a guy and a girl in a car. The girl is yelling something at the
guy, and the guy says,
"this is a Car CHASE! You DON't JUst STOP!"
It looked really funny, but I don't know what movie it is. Help!

I forwarded this email to a friend of mine, and he suggested in may be a
short musical called "Naughty Cal" or "Naughty Gal" or something similar. He
said it starred Lillian Roth.
I don't know if this could be what you mean? Maybe someone else might know?

Hmmm.
What I was basing it on is an argument that was made once by a guy that
used to work for me.
He was a member of one of those loopy, kool-aid drinking cults:-), and I
made the mistake one day of asking about his religion (after he stopped in
here on a Thrusday night "after church"). His view is that Christ was a
rither violent fellow when it suited the situation, and that the original
Hebrew or Latin (or whatever language they studied the Bible in, they
considered it the "original" language) had the scene a bit more
destructive, and that King James toned it down.
I'm not one to get into religious debate, but obviously this fellow
believed that his religion was the right one, tho it was a seriously
different interpretation than what most of the rest of us would have. The
point is that perhaps this was yet another interpretation of the same type.

Jesus vs. Neo
In light of the recent "Neo as Jesus" discussion, I have decided to do a side
by side comparison of both gentlemen, to get at the truth. I'll begin with
the similarities, and go from there.
JESUS was the Christ, or "Annoited One," or "Chosen One."
NEO was the "Chosen One."
JESUS was persecuted by the Romans.
NEO was persecuted by the Agents.
JESUS was betrayed by Judas.
NEO was betrayed by Cypher.
JESUS was a virgin birth, which was extraordinary.
NEO was a virgin birth, which was ordinary.
JESUS is part of the Holy Trinity.
NEO has a girlfriend in a leather catsuit named Trinity.
JESUS was a carpenter.
NEO was a computer programmer.
JESUS raised the dead.
NEO razed buildings.
JESUS was a virgin birth, which was extraordinary.
NEO was a virgin birth, which was ordinary.
JESUS knew of his divinity from an early age.
NEO did not learn of his powers until his early thirties, and doubted them for
some time.
JESUS was followed by 12 disciples.
NEO had no diciples, and was actually a disciple of Morpheus.
JESUS was most probably a black man.
NEO was a white man who hung out with a black man.
JESUS was a real guy.
NEO is a fictional character.
JESUS sacrificed himself for the sinners of the world.
NEO killed a boatload of innocents to save one guy.
JESUS turned over a table and yelled.
NEO calmly shot up a building.
JESUS was Jewish and talked about God constantly.
NEO has no given religious identity, and never mentions God.
JESUS refused to use his powers to save himself after being crucified.
NEO used his powers to dodge bullets and save himself.
JESUS said things like "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone."
NEO said things like "Whoa!"
I think the evidence speaks for itself, folks.

Regardless, it still seemed to have the meaning of Christ being depicted by Neo
in purely the sense of their situations. It wasn't intended as a literal
depiction of the bible, because naturally Christ did not face the conflicts with
guns blazing. I mean, it had the double meaning relecting Christianity things,
but it wasn't exactly like the bible because it wasn't literal, wasn't meant to
be exactly like whats found in the bible.

I believe the guy was Charlie Sheen OR the girl was Alicia Silverstone.
Best guess is one of these three (very close plots):
The Chase (most likely)
Excess Baggage (least likely)
and the third one, I cannot remember the name, but it is a sequel, the two
rob a bank (the first scene is of them pulling the dye pack from the money,
and throwing it at the car), and it is basically just one long chase scene
(there, an answer to your question that asks even MORE questions:-)
Gee, this is becoming like a hobby on this list: Name that Scene:-)
Can be quite fun, tho.

Actually, I think it's saying WAY TOO MUCH. I enjoyed the movie, and
the notion that there are different planes of reality is certainly worth
entertaining, but THE MATRIX hardly broke new ground, philosophically
speaking. It's just a shoot-em-up sci-fi movie -- and a pretty good one
- -- but let's not read too much into it.

I don't know that one thing is TOO much. But, trying to explain it is. He is
a Messianic character, and that is the most that the movie really alludes to
any Christian aspect, which it does do a little. That idea itself is
manifested in TONS of too many different pieces of literature for hundreds
of years (so I don't think any of this has anything to do with breaking new
ground anyway). I am just saying that this aspect may be true on the
surface, but trying to justify painting a view of the movie as symbolic as a
whole is problematic and the arguments for that are not completely
justified.

CATE BLANCHETT LORDS OVER RINGS: Oscar nominee Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth) is
the latest big name to join the cast of the new, live-action film version of

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Last year's "Rush Hour," which earned some
$142 million domestically, made topper Chris Tucker one of the more
sought-after commodities in town. Although a sequel to the New Line
Cinema comedy is in the works, Tucker has yet to commit to star in
the project and is in negotiations with the studio. "Money Talks,"
"Jackie Brown" and "Friday" are a few of Tucker's big-screen credits.

(UltimateTV.com) - "Charlie's Angels: The Movie," based on the '70s
TV show starring Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith, has
finally cast the third angel. Thandie Newton will join Drew Barrymore
and Cameron Diaz in the sexy action pic. Speculation on who the third
"Angel" would be had ranged from Catherine Zeta Jones to Jada Pinkett
Smith to Posh Spice. According to Daily Variety, the delays in script
and casting had forced Sony Pictures Entertainment to push production
back from this month to Dec. 6 so writer John August ("Go") could
rework scripts from Ryan Rowe and Ed Solomon ("Men in Black,"
"X-Men"). Newton is also signed on to star opposite Tom Cruise in
"Mission: Impossible 2." Actor Sam Rockwell is also in talks to star
as the love interest of Barrymore's character, Sabrina, in the film.
There is no conformation of the rumor that Bill Murray will join the
pic as Charlie's right hand man Bosley.

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Christopher Guest, who wrote, directed and
starred in 1996 Castle Rock feature "Waiting for Guffman," is teaming
with the studio again on a new "Guffman"-like comedy, tentatively
titled "Dog Show." A two-month production schedule is slated to start
next month in Vancouver. "Dog Show" - a story by Guest and Eugene
Levy, who also co-wrote and co-starred in "Guffman" - is said to be
similar in tone to "Guffman." Much like that film, "Dog Show" will be
largely improvised and shot documentary-style. Guest will direct the
"dogumentary," which is set in the world of dog shows. The studio is
making offers to many "Guffman" cast members - Catherine O'Hara,
Parker Posey, Bob Balaban, Lewis Arquette, Matthew Keeslar, Linda
Kash and Ron Albertson - to return in different roles.

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Fred Durst, lead singer for top-selling
rock-rap hybrid Limp Bizkit, has been tapped by Warner Bros. to make
his feature film directorial debut with "Nature's Cure," a thriller
to be penned by TV writer Chris Kletzien. The controversial frontman
for Limp Bizkit, Durst is also senior vp at Interscope Records. He
has helmed several music videos for his band, including hits "Faith"
and "Nookie," as well as for rock group Staind. Sources said Durst
will receive low-six figures for his directorial effort. Warners will
also pay low-six figures to Kletzien for his "Cure" treatment, which
is described as "The Breakfast Club" with a touch of "The Game." The
story focuses on the true identity and problems of today's younger
generation. Kletzien ("Roseanne," "VH1 Honors") will pen the script
about a group of wayward youths forced to travel together because of
circumstances beyond their control. After a series of unexpected
events occur, their true personalities, fears and hopes are revealed.

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Meg Ryan has nabbed $15 million to star in
Taylor Hackford's action-romance "Proof of Life" for Castle Rock
Entertainment and Warner Bros., sources said late Wednesday. The
payday is Ryan's best ever and secures her spot as one of the
highest-paid actresses in Hollywood. Russell Crowe ("Mystery,
Alaska") is also in early negotiations to star with Ryan in "Proof,"
though no deal was completed at press time. Ryan will star in "Proof"
after she completes the drama "This Man, This Woman" for producer
Mike Lobell and Screen Gems. Sean Penn is still in talks to star
opposite Ryan in the Frederic Raphael-scripted "This Man." "Proof" is
the story of a hostage negotiator who falls in love with the wife of
the man he is hired to save.

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - After weeks of intense improvisational
stage workshops, Jennifer Tilly, Daryl Hannah and Elias Koteas have
been tapped to star in writer-director Michael Radford's ("Il
Postino") next film, "Dancing at the Blue Iguana," which is slated to
start shooting by the end of the year. Tilly, Hannah and Koteas ("The
Thin Red Line") will be joined by Sandra Oh ("Arli$$"), Sheila Kelley
("Singles"), Vladimir Mashkov ("The Thief"), Bob Wisdom ("Face/Off")
and Charlotte Ayanna. The story centers around a strip joint and has
comic elements along with tragic overtones.
-=> * <=-
LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Fox Searchlight is in final negotiations to
pay $6-$8 million for the domestic rights to Julie Taymor's "Titus,"
the lush adaptation of William Shakespeare's "Titus Andronicus"
starring Anthony Hopkins and Jessica Lange. The film is expected to
be released before the end of the year to qualify for Oscar
consideration. Taymor, the stage director who earned two Tony Awards
for the Broadway version of Disney's animated hit "The Lion King,"
made her feature directing debut on "Titus." Angus MacFadyen, Alan
Cumming and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers also star in the film. The feature
version of the Bard's bloodiest play had a notorious shoot marked by
on-set tension - at one point, Hopkins resolved to quit acting - and
a runaway budget that reportedly flew north of $20 million. Buzz
began to build on the film after producers screened 20 minutes of
footage at this year's Cannes International Film Festival, where
Taymor cemented her reputation as a visual stylist.

ERIE, Pa. (AP) - Al Franken is no big fat idiot. He's a serious
screenwriter. The former "Saturday Night Life" writer and performer,
and author of the book "Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot," is working
on a dramatic screenplay about small-town life in Minnesota, where he
grew up. "I want to be taken seriously if I feel like I know what I'm
talking about," Franken said Wednesday before a speech at Penn
State's campus in Erie. Franken has taken on serious themes before.
He wrote the screenplay to "When a Man Loves a Woman," in which Meg
Ryan played an alcoholic.

Subject: [MV] Random Hearts review
Now before I give you my review I must say that I am very biased as I am a
huge fan of Harrison Ford. With that said I can now tell you that Random
Hearts may be the worst movie of the year. It is definitely the worst of
Ford's career (bypassing last year's dismal 6 Days, 7 Nights). I didn't
really care about anything in this movie as many of the characters
motivations were unclear and I never really 'got' the reason why the two get
together. There was no chemistry and it all seemed predetermined and not
heat of the moment. I must say that I have had more entertaining bowel
movements and it breaks my not-so-random heart to fail this movie. Do not
see this miserable film!
Instead - spend your well earned cash on these fine flicks...
Run Lola Run 96% (hurry it won't be around much longer - run audience
run!)
American Beauty 95% (though not for everyone - dark and difficult at times)
Best Laid Plans 86%
The Sixth Sense 86%
Stir of Echoes 79%

do you mind telling me what the hell you are doing. You sent two copies
of your " I AGREE" yesterday and now two today. has nobody explained to
you how email works yet? the welcome message on almost mailing lists
tells you to sit back and observe when you are new to a list and be sure
to follow the standard protocol of snipping anything out that isn't
important. Everybody on the list got Paul's email so we didn't need to
see it reprinted FOUR times by you just so you could say I agree ( which
is nice for you but I couldn't care less if you agree, many mailing lists
actively prevent listees from posting "I agree" type posts unless they
add something new to the discussion).
I've used Mailcity and it isn't a very difficult service so before you
post anymore to this list or any other learn about what you are doing.
Now rather than reprinting Paul's complete letter for a fifth time I
snipped out the irrelevent parts which makes it much easier to read.
Garrett

(LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Both coasts are buzzing about Fox's "Fight
Club" following screenings of the big-budget film, but it wasn't the
kind of word-of-mouth any studio would want. People flowed out of the
Los Angeles premiere in Westwood on Wednesday night agitated and
angry over the violence depicted in the pugilistic film starring Brad
Pitt and Edward Norton. Scene after scene shows men being pummeled to
bloody messes. They then turn on society, taking revenge through
terrorist activities. "It's loathsome to use the medium this way,"
lamented one producer concerning David Fincher's dark drama. "It's
absolutely indefensible," said a top agent. "It was deplorable on
every level."
Many claimed that the film was "socially irresponsible" and couldn't
come at a worse time for Hollywood, which has been under attack by
Washington since the Columbine shootings. Thursday's New York viewers
were equally disturbed. Michael Musto of the Village Voice emerged
from the screening pursing his lips and shaking his head, saying, "I
didn't like it at all." One woman leaving the theater cried, "It's
the most horrible movie I've ever seen! Why aren't the pickets here?
Where is Cardinal (John) O'Connor when we need him?"

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Harvey Keitel is in negotiations to play
Adam Sandler's demon dad in New Line Cinema's comedy "Little Nicky,"
which is slated to start shooting in November with Steven Brill at
the helm. "Nicky" tells the story of a young demon (Sandler) who
embarks on a journey from hell to New York City to find his runaway
brother, now wreaking havoc on Earth. In a role yet to be cast, the
runaway brother had left home after a fight with their father, Satan
(Keitel), who refused to let him take over the family business. The
film will shoot in New York. Sandler wrote the screenplay with his
writing partner Tim Herlihy. Keitel next stars in Universal Pictures'
"U-571" and Miramax's "Holy Smoke."

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Catherine Zeta-Jones is in negotiations to
star in Oliver Stone's "Beyond Borders" for Mandalay Pictures. She
could cuddle up with Kevin Costner, who's talked about reteaming with
his "JFK" director. Shooting is expected to begin early next year.
"Borders," written by Stone and British scribe Caspian Tredwell-Owen,
is a love story that takes place through the course of many years and
is set against the backdrop of humanitarian efforts around the world.
Stone is completing his football-themed "Any Given Sunday" for Warner
Bros. Costner most recently starred in Universal's "For Love of the
Game" and is shooting "13 Days." Zeta-Jones starred this year in "The
Haunting" and "Entrapment."

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Cate Blanchett is set to star in New Line
Cinema's live-action trilogy "The Lord of the Rings." Blanchett, who
drew an Oscar nomination for last year's "Elizabeth," will play the
elf Galadriel, the wise and visionary queen of Lorien in the
fictional epic based on J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy novels. Peter
Jackson directs the three films, which begin principal photography
Monday in New Zealand. Blanchett will be joined by new cast members
Brad Dourif ("One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"), John Rhys-Davies
("Sliders"), Orlando Bloom, Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan.

What can I say? I'm even embarassed that I'm writing this review! I know
that it's a Saturday Night Live flick - but hey - there's been some good
ones - Wayne's World, Blues Brothers and...uhh that other one... Anyway
this one wasn't that bad - it aint no Coneheads that's for sure! I laughed
a few times and was never really bored. Even though the story is fairly
overdone there were many quirky things in it that kept the energy up. I
guess we can thank the director and former Kid in the Hall - Bruce
McCullogh. I really cannot recommend this though - unless for some reason
you are a fan of the show and this Superstar character then I am sure you
would get some good laughs. A 70% for keeping me amused!
