GLOUCESTER, Mass. (AP) - Just months out of his surgical scrubs,
actor George Clooney is donning fishing garb and sailing some rough
seas. The former star of the hit show "ER" is starting to film "The
Perfect Storm," which details the last voyage of the Andrea Gail, a
fishing boat brought down by a brutal storm. Clooney said Tuesday the
story was a poignant and important one. "They're real people, they're
real families involved," he said. The film is drawn from the book
"The Perfect Storm," in which author Sebastian Junger describes how
the boat and its crew vanished in 1991.

BURBANK, Calif. (AP) - Chants used in the "Eyes Wide Shut" orgy scene
have been edited out of versions headed for Europe and South Africa
because of complaints from Hindus. Filmmaker Stanley Kubrick thought
it was generic chanting music, but it turned out it features highly
religious Hindu scripture, Warner Bros. spokeswoman Nancy Kirkpatrick
said Wednesday. Hindus complained to Warner Bros. and the studio
apologized. "We didn't know. Mr. Kubrick didn't know," Kirkpatrick
said. "We have now taken the lyric part out of the film." Audiences
will hear the same music, but the words will be missing. "Eyes Wide
Shut" opens in Europe and South Africa this month. Versions of the
film already in France still contain the chant.

LOS ANGELES (The Hollywood Reporter) - In a reverse image of last
year's boxoffice horse race, Buena Vista surged ahead of 20th Century
Fox in the last weeks of the summer to steal the crown as the
top-grossing studio of the summer season, beating Fox by slightly
more than $100 million. Thanks to the terrific late-season surge of
"The Sixth Sense," Buena Vista edged out Fox, which had dominated the
early part of the summer with "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom
Menace." They were followed by Universal at No. 3, Paramount, Warner
Bros., Sony and New Line Cinema. Buena Vista pulled in $518.1 million
in U.S.-Canadian grosses, garnering a 18.1% share of the market. Fox
earned $394 million and a 13.8% share for the No. 2 position.
The battle for the top spot was almost the exact opposite of a year
ago, when Buena Vista was the leading distributor for nearly the
entire summer, thanks to the spoils of "Armageddon" and "Mulan." Fox
came from behind last year, based mostly on the strong performance of
"There's Something About Mary," and edged out Buena Vista for the top
spot in the last week of the summer. Fox led from the starting gate
this year, with the huge grosses racked up by "Phantom Menace," but
was overcome by Buena Vista.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - At Mann's Chinese Theatre, a Hollywood landmark
where generations of stars have left their hand prints in wet cement,
Aziz Khezam stood on Warren Beatty's palm impressions, smoking a
cigarette and considering the prospect of a Beatty White House. Vice
President Al Gore, the leading Democratic presidential contender, is
tainted by the scandals that have plagued President Clinton, he said.
Beatty, said Khezam, is "an intellectual who could be understood by
the masses." "I'll take my time to see what Beatty stands for," said
the pastry shop owner. Beatty - movie actor, producer, director,
writer - and now presidential candidate?
In an interview last month with The Washington Post, Beatty
acknowledged that he was thinking about a possible candidacy, but
said it was too early to say more. "I'm careful," he said. Interviews
with members of his likely base - disaffected Democrats and other
left-of-center activists around the nation - suggest deep suspicion
about his motives and credentials.

LOS ANGELES (The Hollywood Reporter) - Susan Sarandon, John Lithgow
and Debbie Reynolds are lending their voices to Nickelodeon Films'
animated feature "Rugrats in Paris - The Movie." Production is under
way at Hollywood-based animation studio Klasky-Csupo for a planned
Thanksgiving 2000 theatrical release from Paramount Pictures. Based
on the Emmy-winning Nickelodeon television series about life from
babies' point of view, "Rugrats in Paris" will be the follow-up
feature to 1998's "The Rugrats Movie," which became the first
non-Disney animated film to gross at least $100 million in North
America. "Rugrats in Paris," directed by Paul Demeyer and Stig
Bergqvist, continues the story of baby Chuckie and his dad Chas. This
time, Chas starts dating again, and it's Chuckie's wish to find a new
mom. When their inventor friend Stu Pickles is summoned to a new
Paris amusement park called Reptarland to work on his latest
invention, Reptar, the whole Rugrats gang - including Chuckie, Tommy,
Angelica, Lil, Phil, Baby Dil and Didi - tag along to the French
capital.

LONDON (AP) - Stanley Kubrick has been posthumously honored with a
lifetime achievement award by the Directors Guild of Great Britain.
Christiane Kubrick, his widow, and his daughter Anya accepted the
award at the London ceremony Thursday night. "He did not relish the
attention of those who thought he was something special," Kubrick's
daughter told the gathering, which included actor Peter Ustinov and
director Alan Parker. "What he had to say he did most carefully in
his films." Kubrick died in March at the age of 70. His death came
only days after he finished work on "Eyes Wide Shut" starring Tom
Cruise and Nicole Kidman. It was his first film since "Full Metal
Jacket" in 1987. Kubrick's film credits included "Dr. Strangelove,"
"A Clockwork Orange" and "2001: A Space Odyssey."

(InfoBeat) - The two latest movies to hit the silver screen for the
last weekend of summer went by almost unnoticed - both at the box
office and by InfoBeat readers. And from the sound of respondents in
our Flicks Picks Reader's Poll, you weren't missing much. "Chill
Factor" and "Outside Providence" garnered less than 200 reader
responses and half of those people didn't like what they saw.
While the "The Sixth Sense" was tearing up the box office for the
fifth straight weekend, earning $29.3 million, the Cuba Gooding
Jr./Skeet Ulrich actioner-"Chill Factor" was a long way back in sixth
place with $5.3 million. And "Outside Providence" - the
semi-autobiographical pic from the Farrelly Bros. - didn't even crack
the top 10, placing 11th with $3.4 million.
Respondents mostly gave the stars the benefit of the doubt, while
dissing "Chill Factor" itself: "A cheap rip off of 'The Rock,' saved
only by the performances of Cuba Gooding Jr. and Skeet Ulrich.
Amusing comedic moments, average action scenes." All told, 49% of
those polled said the film was poor, while 17% gave it a hearty
"average" rating ("Your run-of-the-mill action flick" one person
wrote).
"Outside Providence" didn't fair much better with the numbers.
Fifty-percent gave it a thumbs down, while 17% said it was average.
As with "Chill Factor," people said the flick didn't live up to the
actors. "Very mediocre, all of the good lines were shown in the
trailers. I did like Alec Baldwin's performance, though."
"Chill Factor" quotes
- ---------------------
- - "Typical action flick, right down to the inconsistencies with
reality. In fact the only truly memorable thing about the movie is
the blue Jell-O-like "Elvis." Still, I thought it was worth seeing,
if only for the interplay between Skeet Ulrich and Cuba Gooding Jr.
Not a 'must see' by ANY standards."
- - It couldn't make up it's mind if it was supposed to be funny or
serious-so it wasn't much of anything.
- - Decent movie, other than the plot.
- - It was okay, if it had a stronger actor (Skeet's character,) it
might have been a stronger movie. The ending was weak, hitting on
the female medics, please.
"Outside Providence" quotes
- ----------------------------
- - Really disappointed, when the commercial said it was the latest
movie by the Farrelly brothers who did "Dumb and Dumber" and
"Something About Mary" I was expecting a hilariously movie. Which
wasn't the case at all."
- - This movie was more "What's eating Gilbert Grape" than "Something
about Mary" I still enjoyed and thought Baldwin's performance was
excellent.
- - It showed that the Farrelly's have something more to them than just
toilet humor- the movie had its disgusting moments, but it also had
its touching moments as well.
- - Very entertaining. a little-slow paced, though that fit with the
stoner aspect of the movie. Alec Baldwin was terrific. (I can't
believe I'm saying that, but it's true.)
*Pun of the week*
- -----------------
- All in all, "Chill Factor" left me cold.
*Quote of the week*
- -------------------
- - (from "Chill Factor") Like 90 minutes of nails on a chalkboard.
-=> * <=-
NEW YORK (The Hollywood Reporter) - After nearly four months of
intense indoctrination - er, negotiation - Lions Gate has finally
emerged with domestic distribution rights to Kevin Smith's
controversial satire "Dogma." Lions Gate began running trailers for
the film last weekend in front of "American Pie." The company has
pegged "Dogma" for wide release on about 1,500 screens in late
October or early November. The controversial sendup of the Roman
Catholic Church stars Ben Affleck and Matt Damon as fallen angels,
and Linda Fiorentino as a descendant of Mary and Joseph who works in
an abortion clinic. The film also features Salma Hayek, Jason Lee,
Alan Rickman, Chris Rock and, as God, Alanis Morissette.

oh! this movie was good, the plot was based on Micheal Crichtons (however
it's spelled) book "Eaters Of The Dead" and it's a really cool book, i dunno
how to explain it, but the movie is much easier to understand if you've read
the book

Maybe you are right. It's not "Little Buddah".
The villege in that film was managed by an inventor of

Travolta continues a really amazing career, from being a supporting player on

Subject: [MV] Toronto Film Fest - Friday Sept. 10
Welcome one and all to Movieman's week long journey through cinematic
history. I will be giving you live updates throughout the week about the
going-ons and behind the scenes action from the 24th Toronto International
Film Festival (and when I say live - I mean whenever you get it...) This
journey will include more than 35 movies as well as the numerous anecdotes
of movie star interactions and sightings. Join me as we walk the fine
line...ah let's get to the movies already:
12:00 AM - Midnight Madness
Freeway II: Confessions of a Trick Baby (dir: Matthew Bright) The first
movie of the film fest for me was a midnight madness which is a venue for
the twisted, warped and unusual films that might scare the regular film fest
patrons. This definitely fits into that category. Unfortunately it was
either too twisted or not twisted enough to make it entertaining.
Considering that the first Freeway, starring Reese Witherspoon and Kiefer
Sutherland was a cult success you would think that a filmaker would evolve
even more instead of turning out crap like this! Like Freeway, Freeway II
loosley bases it's storyline around a Brother Grimm Fairy tale but instead
of Little Red Riding Hood - this time it uses Hansel and Gretel as it's
starting point (but since it's two lesbians the tale is more of a Gretel and
Gretel). While this worked for him in the first Freeway it seems very
forced here and what we get is a movie which uses excess in excess. At
times it seems to be mocking itself - or something - and then other times
it's as if it wants us to take it seriously. The acting is another story -
oi! I must fail this flick. Not a good start to the film fest...Saturday
should be better...

3:00 PM
Barenaked in America (dir. Jason Priestley)
If you are a fan of the Barenaked Ladies then this is for you. A
rockumentary about the "sudden" American success of one of the most fun
bands around! This is an hilarious behind the scenes glimpse of the Ladies
on Tour across America. They make being on a road trip seem less redundant
and tedious than I'm sure it is, and more riotous and ridiculous. The
Ladies are a funny bunch of guys on and off of stage and it is obvious that
they really enjoy what they do and that makes them even more entertaining
because it doesn't feel like they are in it for the paycheque. We get to
see the Ladies first performance - on Speaker's Corner in Toronto and then
snippets of many of their best songs performed in various concerts across
America. This movie is a BNL fan's delight - and since I am a fan I will
rate it an 84%.
Star Interaction: Shook Steve, Ed and Tyler's hands afterwards and told them
that they were "so rockin'!" I am cool.
Star Sighting: Jason Priestley and his sideburns. Neat. He stutters a lot
in person which actually makes him seem more like a real person and you
could really tell that they all get along with each other really well.
7:00 PM
All The Rage (dir. James D. Stern)
An all star cast (Jeff Daniels, David Schwimmer, Giovanni Ribisi, Anna
Paquin, Robert Forrester, Joan Allen, Andre Braugher, Gary Sinise) gives us
an interesting collection of guns-are-bad related tales that intertwine with
each other a la Altman's Short Cuts. Though obvious and a little heavy
handed at times (as well as slow in a few spots) there were some good
performances from Daniels as the 'quietly' enraged and jealous husband and
from Anna Paquin who has grown up a lot since winning an Academy Award for
The Piano. It seems that she has taken a page from Christina Ricci's book
on how to maintain your career in Hollywood if you're a young female -
choose a gritty and dirty role as a foul mouthed kleptomaniac minor who is
in love with trouble and money. Good performance from them both. Sinise's
tale was less interesting as was Schwimmers though not due to their
performances. A 70% for this amiable effort.
Star Interaction: Patted Jeff Daniels on the back and said "Jeff, good
performance bud." He said "Thanks."
Star Sighting: Anna Paquin, Robert Forrester, David Schwimmer
10:00 PM
Top of the Food Chain (dir. John Paizs)
A parody or send up of 1950's B movies that has more subtley and reality
than its predecessors. It's the reality of the characters that make the
film a success (as well as the witty writing). Their small nuances and
idiosyncrosies keep this 'alien-devouring-the-towns-folk' tale well rooted
in the real world. Campbell Scott is hilarious as the Atomic Scientist who
thinks that since cold fusion is too difficult to attain he will try to
focus his efforts on achieving cool fusion. Everyone that has seen this
film has said that they really enjoyed it - and so did I. A rousing 88% for
this wonderful romp.
Star Interaction: Shook Scott's hand and asked him what was the difference
with working with a fun director like John and with working withe Mamet on
the Spanish Prisoner. His first response was "Who told you Mamet wasn't a
fun director!?" Then I nervously retaliated by saying what I meant was that
Mamet likes to do things word for word by the script and Top of the Food
Chain was improvised a lot - what were the differences? He said that comedy
is actually much harder because when you do the scripted joke the first time
everyone laughs - but then on take 12 it isn't that funny anymore and it's
hard to maintain the comedy - wheras with Mamet it's rehears, go to your
spot, shoot the scene and on to the next one. Neat. Also I shook hands
with the Oatmeal Crisp guy who had a role in this film!
Star Sighting: Saw Kevin Smith (Clerks, Chasing Amy, Dogma) getting out of
his limo. He waved...in my general direction...at many screaming fans...and
me.
12:00 AM - Midnight Madness!
The Wisdom of Crocodiles (dir. Po Chih Leong)
Like Tony Scott's The Hunger, Crocodiles is less about vampires and more
about isolation and desparation. Jude Law continues his great performance
streak (Gatacca, eXistenZ) with an amazing character who needs to drink the
blood of a woman who has the perfect love for him. Like an analogy given in
the film about hanging from a branch in a tree for so long that it actually
felt good to let go - so must Jude Law though his own 'hunger' denies him
the opportunity. A great charater piece that is haunting and moving. 88%.
Star Interaction: Well I shook Po's hand afterwards...he smiled.

12:30 PM
Joe the King (dir. Frank Whaley)
A generation younger version of Affliction except that instead of just his
father that gives him no love - nobody does. It's an interesting story
about a pre-teen hooligan who is shown to have a good heart but no one - not
teachers, parents, his brother or even his friends -seems to care enough
about him. Unsurprisingly this leads Joe to smoking, swearing and stealing
while trying to stand up for his drunken father (Val Kilmer) who owes money
all over town and who also happens to be the school janitor. Noah Fleiss
does a fine job as the hooligan punk. Although it is slow in parts it is
great that a movie can make the audience care about such a punk on the wrong
path where so many other movies would not show us why the punk acts that
way. Kilmer is good as the bad dad and Whaley (acted in Swimming with
Sharks) makes his directorial debut with some decent camera work and good
performances. Just a little more growth is needed in the fluidity of
telling a story.
3:30 PM
History is Made at Night (dir. Illka Jarvilaturi)
An incoherent storyline which follows tow 'secret agents' in and out of love
while playing both sides on their most recent mission. The description
sounds interesting however this Finnish director fails to link the sometimes
ridiculous and outlandish and sometimes boring scenes together in a sensical
manner. The result is a mish mash of what might have been a good idea.
Even the explosive presence of Bill Pullman (note-sarcasm) could not keep me
interested in these flip floppy characters. The opening and closing music
was great though the excessive use of the sultry sax put me to sleep
throughout the rest of the film. A fail.
9:30 PM
American Movie (dir. Chris Smith)
A documentary about a 30 year old with nothing to show for in his life
except for his desire and passion to make films. In between drinking,
smoking and swearing we see his devotion to his dreams and the power he has
over other people to get them to believe in him and this is what make the
movie work - that and it's freakin' hilarious! Humourous documentaries are
great because since there is no script the humour is natural and uncensored
which is near impossible to achieve with a script. A fun and funny movie
that show that no matter who you are or what you do for a living - you can
still make your dreams come true. An 85%.
Star Interaction: As I was walking to my seat the director guy (the guy in
the movie - Mark Borchardt - not Chris Smith) was approaching me and so I
says "Hey it's the diretor guy!" and he says "Hey it's the audience guy!"
And he shakes my hand and thanks me for coming and I tell him that I was
looking forward to it - and he thanked me again.
Also before the movie I saw Damon Wayans getting into a Blazer and as he
drove slowly past me I said "Damon" and he mumbled something and I said
"Right on!"

LOS ANGELES (AP) - "Stigmata" edged "The Sixth Sense" at the box
office in its debut weekend, ending the Bruce Willis thriller's
five-week run as North America's favorite film, according to industry
estimates Sunday. "Stigmata," featuring Patricia Arquette as a
hairdresser who manifests the wounds of Christ and Gabriel Byrne as a
priest sent to investigate, earned $19.3 million in ticket sales,
while "The Sixth Sense" took in $17 million, according to Exhibitor
Relations Co. Inc. "Stir of Echoes" starring Kevin Bacon was third
with $6.2 million. "Runaway Bride," was in fourth place with $3.9
million and "Bowfinger" rounded out the top five with $3.7 million.

TORONTO (AP) - If sex really sells, then this year's Toronto film
festival offers a veritable bounty of commerce. Pornography. Incest.
Nymphomania. Sadomasochism. Lesbian sex. Middle-aged men and college
girls. Middle-aged men and high school girls. Couples doing it in
cars and on airplanes, at home or at the butcher's, on the grass or
in a greenhouse. Titles of the 320 films being shown here over 10
days include "Between Your Legs," "Below the Belt," "TOPS & Bottoms,"
"Split Wide Open," "The Virgin" and "Une Liaison Pornographique."
"It's obvious filmmakers are going right to the boundaries," said
Piers Handling, director of the Toronto International Film Festival,
which runs through Sept. 18.

9:30 AM - Cider House Rules (dir. Lasse Hallstrom)
Homer Wells (Tobey Maguire - Pleasantville)was born and raised in the
orphanage. Wilbur (Michael Caine) plays the aging doctor who takes Homer
under his wing and teaches him about being a doctor - from delivering a
child to abortions (which is an ethical question that runs quietly
throughout the film). The movie unfolds with so much passion that it become
difficult to hold back the tears as we follow Homer on his path of
self-discovery as he ventures out of the orphanage and into the "real"
world. Tobey is a fine choice for this niave yet fairly well educated young
man whose excitement shines through as he experiences many things for the
first time that we have taken for granted. I have not read the book so I
cannot offer an opinion on the comparison - suffice to say that the movie
was excellent. A 93%.
12:30 PM
Four Days (dir. Chris Wehrfritz)
Full of implausable motives and seemingly random and unimportant characters,
this movie falls flat as a young boy/man goes on a road trip to meet up with
his father after a planned bank hiest. This movie is slow, boring and full
of ridiculous "philisophical" voice overs. The relationships of some of the
characters were beyond believable and the purpose of the film is not clear
(either that or I am displaying my ignorance for "not getting it.").
Anyway - this is fine movie to avoid. Fail.
4:00 PM
Guts (dir. Ron Termaat)
The point/purpose/message of this movie is a good one to put on film - have
enough guts to express your true feelings or you may lose what you've got.
A timid screenwriter whose only way to 'get the girl' is to write about it
(and we get to see these fictions played out for us in black and white).
Playing somewhat similar to Woody Allen's Play it Again Sam, Guts shows us a
character who we all root for - it's just too bad he didn't have enough
guts. That's the extent of my enjoyment of this film as well - it would
have been much better if the filmaker steeped out a little further on the
branch to make the point/purpose/message have more focus, more strength to
it - it's too bad the filmaker didn't have enough guts. 72%.
6:30 PM
Janice Beard 45WPM (dir. Clare Kilner)
Janice Beard (Eileen Walsh) decides that the only way to help her agrophobic
mother is to leave the home and try to get a job. However, since she lacks
any job skills whatsoever she begins to utilize the only talent that she
does have - lying. She is hired and fired from temp jobs and all the while
she is inventing crazy stories to make her mother believe that she is
successful. The humour is plentyful with an assist from Hugh Grant's
roomate in Notting Hill, Rhys Ifans. A great movie that makes it a lot of
fun to root for the underdog as Janice becomes entangled in some sort of
conspiracy going on at her new workplace. A gem - 90%.
Star Interaction: Absolutely nothing today. Sad.
Star Sighting: Besides the mirror when I woke up...nothing again... tomorrow
should be good with my attempt to wait for RUSH tickets for Woody Allen's
new flick, Sweet and Lowdown.

Subject: [MV] Freddy vs. Jason
I know there was some discussion over a week ago, but I saw this this
morning on Dark Horizons, and thought some might find it interesting....
Freddy vs. Jason: DVD Review chatted with the always cool Robert Englund
(aka. Freddy Krueger) about the long awaited "Freddy vs. Jason" movie. About
the project in general, Englund says "Freddy vs. Jason sounds comical, but
(producer) Michael DeLuca goes to great lengths to get the script where he
wants it. I am hoping that it will help the overall balance. The new writer
on the project did the first draft for æThe MaskÆ. It is a great film that
really made a difference. It turned a corner like æThe Blair Witch ProjectÆ,
and I think these things need to be embraced". What everyone wants to know
is, what's the current status of the film. To that question he
enthusiastically replied "All I know is that theyÆre waiting for a first
draft at this point. I am really looking forward to that, and then weÆll go
into early pre-production. I might be doing a little bit of stuff, screen
tests and so in September. Currently we are working towards a Summer 2000
release date. As I say, thereÆs no final script yet, but I heard some really
interesting stuff about the story and how they tie Freddy and Jason
together. One of the ideas is to make Freddy the janitor at the Crystal Lake
camp and so forth. I am sure it will be fun". Things sound on the up and up,
thanks to 'Mark L'.
