That's the kind of sad economics that comes into play too often. Many
theaters cannot compete on the level of a 16-theater stadium seat multiplex,
and various older and smaller theaters with lots of character just can't
function. They just don't have the ability to reach economies of scale as
the costs of first-run movies from a distributor can be expensive. With only
one, two or maybe 3 screens, these theaters can't deal with that kind of
cost. And they can't raise prices of tickets or concessions without losing
customers.

That's good and bad. We love old theaters that are fun to be in. The seats
are often plush, the screen is quite often huge, and there is plenty of leg
room and great acoustics. Many cities have plenty of such that have shut
down. We all miss those. That's also the reason there was an advent of $1
theaters in the late 80s through now. Second run distribution can be cheap
enough that if they fill the theaters at a pretty high seat occupancy, then
they can get by, with little in the way of concession stand revenue usually.

The rational side of not paying for concessions is plain old supply and
demand. If you really enjoy concessions, then you might pay more for it.
There are plenty of reasons why you would pay for it, but at higher prices,
there will be less such people. It is in theater goers best interest to
avoid losing money or paying more money than is worth the benefits of going
to older theaters. It is rather Darwinian to say, but if an older or less
profitable theater can't cut their costs, then they can't survive since
people won't want to pay $14 US for a ticket when they can pay $7 at the
newer theater with stadium seating. I know that's sad, but in movie goer's
rational instinct, a more expensive theater can't make it. And, if they
can't manage their costs, then maybe they shouldn't.

I enjoy older theaters, but I also like stadium seating as a concept; even
though I don't really care a huge deal for the current types of theater
designs. Most are rather compact and not entriely comfortable in many cases.
But, it is just not really economcially rational for a movie patron to pay
more for the same product that could be gotten somewhere else for less. The
only thing that might make it so is a large swelling of public opinion to
keep people at these theaters, willing to pay extra for tickets and food.
And, it would take quite a few patrons buying full price tickets with a nice
bunch of concessions to even help such theaters get by.

When I was a kid, 40 years ago, a full-price (adult) ticket to a first
run movie cost $1.50, at least in the Washington DC area.  The cost of
living in general has gone up about five times since then, and now a
movie ticket costs $7.50.  What's so horrible about that?   Compare the
cost of a movie with _any_ live event, and it's still a bargain!  If you
avoid the overpriced popcorn and sodas, that is.

 I used to get in with McDonald's cheeseburger wrappers and coca-cola bottle
 caps and popcorn was 15 cents.  Alas, those days are gone, but here in
 Dallas, there is one theater that charges 15cents for old black & white
movies.
 They bring the food, wine, beer, or soda to your chairs and the movie is on
a
 big screen.   Plus they show serials before the movie.  They do take
donations.

My wife and I saw The Fisher King on our first date, and it is really too
bizarre to be a good date movie at that stage, especially for date 1.
Watching a bare-HAIRY-assed Robin Williams run through Central park at night
is not exactly romantic. Well, maybe it is for some people. The evening
before our wedding, partly as a stress release, we snuck off from our
families and saw Clueless, of all things.

I don't know that I could propose to someone after watching Silence of the
Lambs when it was new and fresh like that! I was relatively stupified and
awed after I watched that for the first time.

You go James. My wife was a willing dutch payer when we dated, and i cannot
say that I was always chivalrous as I let her pay when she really wanted
to!! Hahaha..

chains - Mann Theaters, Cineplex Odeon and Sony don't need our help... and

The first movie we saw together was The Big Chill.  She hated it.  I
married her anyway:-)

Most memorable was Cops and Robbersons.  Yes, Cops and Robbersons, but not
for the reason you would think.  It was one of the few times we went to the
theatre with no set movie in mind.  Everything I wanted to see (Bad Boys,
Crimson Tide), she nixed.  Her first choices (can't even remember) were
just as unappealing to me.  We decided that we both liked Chevy Chase, and
tho he rarely makes GREAT movies, at least they are watchable.  Hence, the
only movie we could agree on was this dreck.

It was TERRIBLE.  I have NEVER walked out of the theatre for any movie, but
I came close that night.  It just stretched on and on.  Afterwards I found
out that my date (we weren't married yet) hated it as much as I did.

The other one that sticks out in my mind is Pulp Fiction.  This guy she
worked with and his girlfriend wanted to go out with us, and he suggested
Pulp Fiction.  Knowing my wife's taste, I told her that I KNEW she'd hate
it, and thought that her co-worker might not like it.

Well, of course, all three of them hated it.  My wife covered her eyes with
her hands because of the violence, then covered her ears with her hands
because of the language.  She sat there thru the entire movie with her eyes
completely shut and her hands over her ears.

Of course, since *I* was the only one that said anything negative about the
movie, she is convinced to this day that I hated this movie as much as
everyone else did.

I usually remember when I saw a movie by remembering who i watched it
with.  I have had many viewing partners (female and male), so if I
remember who I watched the movie with, I usually remember whatever else
was going on in my life at the time.

But I have a question.  How about movies that have memories associated
to them that aren't necessarily happy?  Mr Holland's Opus is going to be
one movie that I may not watch again for a long time.  It was screening
on tv in Australia last November, and I decided to watch it alone.  The
next day, my fiance and I broke up.  I know it seems strange to
associate these 2 things, but that's how I remember it.  Oh well.

On a happier note, I will always remember The Relic as a movie we never
saw. We were sitting in a cafe, having a quiet celebration for my
fiance's birthday.  We looked at our watches, decided not to see the
movie, ordered few more coffees and talked most of the night away.  The
most memorable movie I haven't seen.

On July 20, 1963, I had a first date with a young lady with a reputation
for being somewhat of an eccentric.  I went over to her house that
afternoon to watch the partial solar eclipse which was occuring that day,
and later we went to see "Lawrence of Arabia."  During the intermission
we went to restrooms, and she never came back!   Unsure as to whether she
_would_ come back, I stayed through the second half of the movie ..... a
good hour and a half ... and then drove over to her house. I found her
wandering around the neighborhood, and when I asked her why she'd left,
she said "Oh, I got bored." I didn't ask her out again.... but that day
remains vivid in my memory: an eclipse, a great movie, and a really weird
date!

My sister and I saw Terms of Endearment, then got home to find that my mom
had been rushed to the hospital.  She had been sick with a cold (or so we
thought) but it turned out to be Pneumonia and she nearly died that night
from it.  She was in the respiratory ICU for 6 months fighting it before
being released, she never fully recovered but did survive for another 7
years before passing away.  To say I hate that movie is an understatement.

I usually remember when I saw a movie by remembering who i watched it
with.  I have had many viewing partners (female and male), so if I
remember who I watched the movie with, I usually remember whatever else
was going on in my life at the time.

But I have a question.  How about movies that have memories associated
to them that aren't necessarily happy?  Mr Holland's Opus is going to be
one movie that I may not watch again for a long time.  It was screening
on tv in Australia last November, and I decided to watch it alone.  The
next day, my fiance and I broke up.  I know it seems strange to
associate these 2 things, but that's how I remember it.  Oh well.

On a happier note, I will always remember The Relic as a movie we never
saw. We were sitting in a cafe, having a quiet celebration for my
fiance's birthday.  We looked at our watches, decided not to see the
movie, ordered few more coffees and talked most of the night away.  The
most memorable movie I haven't seen.
