This is directed primarily to "Oz" and Torq.
If you feel compelled to 'foot stomp' at the dreck that Hollywood continues
to turn out, more power to ya. If you want to take issue with the apparent
state of a society that embraces not only these films but also Jerry
Springer and the multitude of Fox specials like "When Rabid Cops Attack
Criminals Fleeing From Plane Crashes 16", fine. I'm sure few on this list
would disagree with you. But to so boldly question the intelligence of a
person, or their overall worth as a human being, just for daring to enjoy
themselves at a film you detest is obscene. Exactly what happened in your
lives that convinced you that your level of insight and intelligence soars
so highly over the heads of the rest of us? I've got news for you, guys. The
text of your messages doesn't appear any larger on my monitor than any other
member of this list. If you were truly as enlightened as you apparently
think you are, then you would realize that mudslinging does nothing to
improve the respect your opinions are given. It, in fact, does the opposite.
The key to making a point is persuasion, not name calling. Those who choose
the latter are merely revealing what level they are really on, which is
invariably lower than they think it is. Lighten up.

Very true but that doesn't make those movies anything but video games on
Celluloid.
I don't believe that there is anything wrong with video games or those who
play them but movies
made to look just like you were watching somebody play one of those video
games are a waste.
You might just as well watch a video game itself.
Movies that fit into the category like Matrix are truly bad movies and get
correspondingly
very poor reviews also. Absolutely no excuse for a story. Very, very bad
acting and dull, dull, dull.

Your rant is like a jumble of ideas that really don't have to be
contradictory as they are made to sound. I don't see why it's a problem if I
enjoy Face/off or something by Speilberg or Zemeckis, to further the
example, that may have mass popularity but little artistic value other than
my enjoyment while watching. I see no reason why you can't enjoy current
mainstream movies or even go so far as state you tolerate it over other
movies which you don't like, and STILL enjoy beautiful and/or artistically
intriguing movies like Cinema Paradiso, The Bicycle Thief, Nosferatu, or
movies such as To Kill a Mockingbird, Double Indemnity, or even fare such as
House of Games, Rashomon, or City Lights. I can laugh at the corny one
lining quips of Cage and Connery against a group of heavily armed commandos,
and the next day be amazed by the epic landscapes and cinematography of
Lawrence of Arabia.
Not all of us have the option of seeing movies like Life is Beautiful or
LS2S in the theater, or even on tape yet. Where I live, these movies barely
had about 2 weeks in the theater (which annoys the hell out of me when a
movie like US Marshals had something like 6 months at one of the theaters
here last year...), of which I did not have the time to see them, then poof
gone. If you don't live in a big city, you don't always have access to these
films. And, also, many video stores carry inadequate supplies of classic or
foreign movies, so our viewing of such films is necessarily limited. Not an
excuse, but it's not always so easy to find good stuff or what you want.
Lamentable all around, but hardly my fault if I can't find Nosferatu or The
Searchers because my only stinking rental choice is Blockbuster or Hastings.
People on the list have lamented the course of Hollywood's efforts or the
ragged selections of rental stores since I've been on the list. It's one
thing to do that, which is fairly common every 6 months or so on the list,
but another to smack of this pretentious and arrogant nature, as if you know
best. People have different likes and dislikes, as is human nature, but
blatant disregard for the intelligence of others on the list without really
knowing what everyone feels is another. It is way out of line and
inconsiderate.

Friends,
Hey, I loved Face/Off too! I think is is the 2nd best action movie of the
1990s, behind Speed.
No way put it in a class with Armageddon, a truly deplorable movie which was
even inferior to Deep Impact!
Incidentally, Titanic, not my favorite 1990s movie (either Schindler's List
or Silence of the Lambs is), is a top-class movie!
Just my opinions, of course!

I agree with this totally. I enjoy going to a great Mexican restaurant, but
I also enjoy Taco Bell, because you might catch me at Taco Bell one day,
does that mean you can question my taste in food? I don't think so.
Enough of all of this, let's back off, lick our wounds and talk about
something else movie related, shall we?

Right on, Wade! We all have our favorite movies, and our list of
all-time dogs.
To me, the value of a list like this is sharing info: not only what
movies people have seen and like (or dislike) but their reasons for their
views. I visit lots of movie sites, and help run one (FlickPicks -
http://www.flickpicks.com) because there's WAY too many movies out there
to screen them all, my circle of personal acquaintances is too limited to
be of much help in this area, and most professional critics have axes to
grind. (Notice how Roger Ebert ALMOST NEVER says anything bad about any
Disney-empire movie?)
The fact that "the masses" flocked to see Titanic and Armaggedon cuts no
ice with me, either way. Personally, I liked Titanic, but didn't even
bother to see Armaggedon, because I knew it was just another loud, dopey
Jerry Bruckheimer movie -- "The Rock" in space. (Deep Impact was no
prize, either!)
The main thing to remember is that going to movies (and talking about
them here) is not life-or-death stuff. It's a pastime; enjoy it for what
it's worth, and don't take it too seriously.
PS: Last night, I watched Waking Ned Devine on video and thought it was
mildly amusing, but nowhere near as good as many others found it. (It
moved way too slowly for my taste, and there was a totally irrelevant
"love interest" sub-plot.)

I thought the same thing. I could never get quite get over the fact that the
whole town would commit a grand fraud just to get the little deceased man's
winnings. It seemed a too happy and cheery movie for that.. But, it's an
Irish one I suppose. I liked it here and there, but overall found it mildly
agreeable..

My husband just initiated a list for people to send in their favorite
movies...
"Film writer Joseph McBride likens the making of movie lists to Rorschach
blots. In his opinion, "probably the quickest way to get to know someone is
to ask for a list of his or her ten favorite movies. It's such a direct
window into someone's psyche..." I don't know if that's true or not, but I
do know that everyone with whom I am personally tight sees movies as more
than mere entertainment."
It seems to me that this list sees movies as foder to tease each other -
unless it's Matrix...

Leticia,
Thanks for your comments.!
Actually, I see Lawrence of Arabia as more a drama than an action/adventure.
And, though I like it, I really do not enjpy seeing it time and again. This
is my requisite for all these lists.
All of these, except River Kwai and some of the foreign, I have seen at
least 3 times. Kwai I have only seen twice and the foreigns, except Nevsky
which I have seen 6 or 7 times, all once.
I confess to not being a big fan of comedies. Also, I have seen maybe 30-40
foreign movies, which might mean that list is not representative. I do know
that those there I like a lot.
Did you notice I did not include Citizen Kane? I am not a big fan of this,
and feel somewhat guilty about it as everybody else is!
I like Raiders but there is something about it, not quite rational or easy
to describe, that makes me uneasy in the final 5th or so of the movie.

The only alternative in your world? Yes, it is the only alternative in my world!!! I
live in the Philippines and the movies that come here or have the chance to be shown
in moviehouses are usually those that have big name stars. Once in a while I get to
see good movies (not just of the action genre) but they are usually shown if they
won the academy awards or hit it big in the box office. And as for our video
selection what is usually being offered are those that are guaranteed to be
bestsellers. I admit that the movies that I have seen through the years have not
been that very good that is why I subscribed to this mailing list so that I would
know what is out there.

I've actually heard other people say that about the end of Raiders. They've
said it was because the Ark no longer is just a religious artifact, but
actually starts doing something religious, wrath of God type stuff to the
Nazi's. The movie up till then is pretty light, adventurous, funny, but
then it turns pretty dark. Just thought I would express what others have
told me about it.

Subject: [MV] Some random thoughts about Matrix, Phantom Menace, and Titanic
Friends:
Some comments about some of the biggest movies of the last couple of years:
1. Titanic - I saw it first on a theater and, of course, later purchase the
VHS. I liked it a lot and meant to see it in the big screen again, as this
is the type of movie that can be best appreciated on it. But in fact, I
never returned.
I have now seen it several times and have come to the conclusion it has a
serious flaw; can anyone help pinpoint or refute this? I think that either
Di Caprio or Winslett is all wrong, wron, wrong in it! Yet, I cannot decide
whom. Please share any thoughts or insights you may have on this!
2. The Matrix - I also saw it in a cinema and it was full. And everybody
just loved this one! Me, I found it confusing and uneven, as well as
original (for a movie, not for Science Fiction) and entertaining. I think a
second visit is warranted, so as to make a better judgement on it.
3. The Phantom Menace - Jar Jar Binks definitely hurts the movie. In
addition, the lack of good (heck, any!) acting is deplorable. I arrived 40
minutes ahead of time and purchased our tickets easily, but then had to make
a 45 minute queue to get in. It began 20 minutes late and they started with
it right away, but with no "A long time ago, in ..." ! Amazing! This may
just have turned me off.
The movie, which I guess I will have to see again, has many wonderful
episodes and undertones for those in the know. Has anybody remarked that the
pod race (I personally did not like it that much) seems to be a tribute to
the chariot race in Ben Hur?
Unfortunately, I committed a serious crime! Somewhat bored in the middle,
exhausted by Y2K work in my job, and tired by the long wait, I dozed when
the light sabre duel began! And recovered my senses as it was ending!

Hear, hear. Even living in the big city is no guarentee. However, as for
LS2SB, I saw an imported tape from the UK, and have to say it struck me as
just another Pulp Fiction rip-off
I had been looking forward to The Castle ever since it was released in
Australia two years ago. It was in and out of theatres before I even knew
it. Looks like I'm waiting for video on that.
As for Life is Beautiful, it was scheduled for video release (subtitled) in
July, but was pulled when TPTB decided to release a dubbed version.
And, also, many video stores carry inadequate supplies of classic or

Well, you need to find a REAL video store, and stay away from the chains
(and don't even get me started on their illegal and hits-driven business
practices). Your independent video store should have a much better foreign
section. If you want, let me know where you live, and I can try to find a
REAL video store close to you. (Just the city). For example, we have in
stock over 90% of the movies that Oz has mentioned in his time on this
list. We have over 450 movies in our foreign film section. And I don't
even think we're all that big. Just try to get that selection at Big
Blue!!:-)

When I saw this movie, my wife commented that the character of Rose did
not seem at all plausible for the era in which the movie takes place.
She's way too "modern" in her attitudes toward sex and romance, plus, at
age 16 or 17 she's supposedly a knowledgeable art connoisseur. Because
of the way the story is told -- from Rose's perspective -- it's necessary
to have her alive in 1997, which in turn necessitates having her be
really young at the time the story is told. But I think it hurts the
plausibility of the story, as well as undercutting a lot of the dramatic
tension; you _know_ she's gonna live! So I don't think the problem is
the actors; it's the characters. That's what keeps the movie from being
one of the really great ones, like "Gone With The Wind" or "Braveheart"
where the characters have some real depth and you care about their fate.
I'm not sure I'd have cast DiCaprio and Winslett in those roles, but it
sure worked at the box office!
