Man, talk about great timing!! Fits right into this thread.
Today, I received not one but two surprises. First thing I heard was an
industry source passed along that Lucas either will make or has made an
announcement (supposedly on QVC!!) that the original trilogy will be coming
out on DVD **soon**
No timetable, but best guesses I have seen are sometime around Christmas
(when DVD players should break the $200 floor).
BUT...
Then I was at Corona's movie site, and they have a report that Lucasfilm is
making a SECOND Special Edition of the new trilogy. Rumours are that this
second "remake" will have a limited run in the theatres, then be used as
the stock for the DVD release.
This raises some interesting questions. To wit:
EITHER there is no way that the DVDs will be ready before the turn of the
millennium...
OR Lucas is working on these as we speak, and will have them in theatres
soon (if they will be on DVD within seven months), which means that Lucas
will just about control the release schedules and the theatres through the
end of the year.
Regards.

Subject: [MV] EPISODES 7,8,9-the truth
>>>I was always under the impression that, yes he originally wanted to take

so
>>>he filmed Ep 4 A New Hope. When it was such a success he decided he

>>>into 5 and 6. In other words, the Emperor wasn't suppose to bite it
until
>>>Episode 9.
He originally crafted a humungous script, that included everything - a
massive battle with 'primitives' fighting it out, twins separated, father's
identified, the whole bit. In otherwords, ANH, ESB and ROJ as one mutha
script. In order to write this, he did a 'back story' , 19 pages of notes
that told some of the origins of the characters. He decided to take the
script and do the first third. Originally it was the Wookiees at the end
who battled the Empire, but we'd already seen that Chewbaaca was
sophisticated, so he made the Ewoks instead.
The story about there being nine came from an interview he did, where
someone asked him about the trilogy, and he talked about prequels. They
then suggested he do a trilogy of sequels too, and he kinda seemed positive
about it. He's EMPHATIC that he won't do another three, that there never
were stories of the other three to begin with. Excellent indication of
this is that they've licensed the story in book form to all the years AFTER
ROJ, but none before.

Subject: [MV] Star Wars- episode 1
On the spur of the moment I decided to try to catch Star Wars. I called a =
friend and we agreed to meet at the theater one hour before the movie =
started(he lives in a suburb outside LA and I thought that the theaters =
would not be so crazy as in the city). Much to our surprise there was no =
line at all and we had our pick of seats. Eventually the theater almost =
filled but it wasn't the mad rush I expected. =20
So everybody I know that has seen the movie has prefaced their opinion of =
this movie with some variation of "For what it is..." meaning that they =
recognize the movie isn't the second coming and their expectations were =
not that high. I went in with tempered expectations after all the hoopla =
and responses like the above. =20
While I enjoyed some parts of the film I have to say the emperor has no =
clothes. I don't want to get into spoiler territory here but this movie =
sucked! The acting was horrible across the board, the story was rambling =
and had no dramatic tension and the special effects were not as awe =
inspiring as I expected. Basically the movie is just a more sophisticated=
animated movie. I don't think real actors have anything to worry about. =
And this Darth Maul? Big deal. Even this much anticipated character was =
pretty ho hum. =20
And to tell you the truth I don't think I am alone in that opinion. You =
can feel the energy in a theater and when Star Wars was finished there was =
nothing more than scattered and polite applause. =20
I'm sure it will go on to make hundreds of millions of dollars but it sure =
doesn't deserve it. =20
Finally, I am usually dubious at claims of racism around every corner but =
I think this movie is due a big controversy around some racial typing. =
Can anybody spot the greedy jew, the sneaky asians the simple minded =
blacks?

I'd actually be interested in hearing from folks on whether they
enjoyed themselves at Matrix more than Star Wars. Both seem to me to
be heavily effects reliant, and both had rambling stories, slow
second acts and crappy acting. So what's the pick? Star Wars Ep One
or Matrix?

After what people put up with from Lethal Weapon 4 and Rush Hour in
the 'racism is funny' stakes, I'd be surprised if anyone gives a
