I don't think so. I'd like to know how many people seriously think
DVD will still be the format of choice by the time Episode three has
had it's run in theatres.
MiniDisc? Internet movies? Video on Demand? DIVX?
You just kinda know that someone is going to come up with something
new in the next few years to make everyone ditch their DVD players,
a la Laserdisc.

Toffee mused:
"Anyone else figure the series is really Darth Vader's story, not
Obi's, Luke's, or anyone else?"
Well, officially I think it's supposed to be Annikan/Vader's tale, but I
think this whole saga revolves around...R2!
Think about it: when all is said and done and the Star Wars saga finally
finishes, who's the only character who will have been there for the whole
ride? R2! He was there in Star Wars, delivering Leia's "only hope" message
that united Luke and Obiwan; he was there in the X-wing that blew up the
first Death Star; he was there with Yoda and Luke for the Jedi training; he
was there in the Millennium Falcon, fixing the hyperdrive in the escape
from Cloud City; he was there as part of the rescue team that infiltrated
Jabba's underworld to save Han; he was there on Endor, opening doors to
Imperial bunkers while under heavy gunfire. He's been shot by Jawas, shot
by TIE fighters, eaten (and spit out) by Dagobah swamp monsters, shot by
storm troopers, and even forced into bartender slavery serving drinks on
the sand barge to Jabba's goons!
And those are just examples from the previous films; due to SPOILER
potentential, I won't go into what R2 does to merit heroic status from the
Queen (and in the first hour, nonetheless!) in EPISODE 1.
Yeah, this whole saga may be about Vader, but R2's the true hero. Prove me
wrong!

Actually, the original idea was for the central characters to be the
robots, C-3PO and R2-D2. When Lucas planned for nine movies (three
trilogies), they were the only characters in all of them. However, since
he has dropped plans for making the final trilogy, perhaps that has
changed. There were even rumours that the droids wouldn't even be in the
first movie, but of course... well, if you've seen it, you know what
happens:-)
There is some question about who's story this actually is. However, I feel
it is unfair to look too deeply into this until everyone has had a chance
to see the movie.

************ This may be interpreted as a spoiler so beware **************
First, I absolutely loved this movie. I can't wait to see it again,
although I'm forcing myself to wait at least a month so I don't get accused
of being too much of a freak by my co-workers.
I'm wondering how much of this film was cut out. Does anyone know? The
reason I ask is it seemed very rushed, especially at the very beginning. I
was also extremely disappointed in how short the Light Saber duel was at the
end. It seems like they must have cut a huge chunk of it out also. Now
that I've seen the movie, I've started reading the book by Terry Brooks
based on the Screenplay and story by George Lucas. It has many scenes in it
that were not in the movie and I'm wondering if they were the imagination of
Terry Brooks or were based on scenes from the movie that were cut. It also
has a short history of the Sith which I found very interesting.
Would it be too much to hope for that Lucas will eventually release a
director's cut of this on Video (DVD or Laserdisc)?
Any comments will be appreciated.

Well, I'll explain my reasoning then.....
The six part arc.....
Annakin is a nice young boy who gets lured to the Dark Side, he becomes
Darth Vader, but at the end he comes back to the good side again. The End.

Hi Oz! Hi bb!
I couldn't tell for sure if you actually had DVD, it sounded like you might
be holding out. I had been, until I saw the quality on my new PC with DVD.

Huh? Limited market penetration as an audio format sure, but I see no
indication it could become a replacement for DVD.
Internet movies?
No nice touchy-feely 'possession' experience.
Video on Demand?
Also no nice touchy-feely 'possession' experience.
DIVX?
Already dying out.

I have been buying LDs for nearly 20 years. VHS for about 25 years. There
is no reason to think that a medium that basically does the job it's
designed for will be easily replaced. You have to think 'why?' would people
want a new system. DVD is replacing sell-thru VHS because it is TWICE as
good for similar money, plus it has lots of cool features.
If some of the folks on the list are not yet into DVD then I have NO
hesitation in recommending they stop hesitating and jump right in and enjoy
the best home cinema experience since popcorn.

I remember that now. I had forgotten it, but yes, that's what he said at
the time. Interesting since 3PO tells Luke in episode 4 that he's not very
good at telling stories, yet he proves himself wrong in Jedi when he tells
the Ewoks the story from Ep. 4 and 5.

Yes, you are right. Anakin/Vader is definately a central character.
However:
S
P
O
I
L
E
R
S
P
A
C
E
It is also very religious. We have a virgin birth (Anakin). We also have
the Immaculate Conception (the IC was actually the birth of Mary without
sin, so that she could carry Jesus), as Anakin is the father of the actual
saviour, Luke.
Senator Palpatine/The Emperor/(the other character that he played in
Episode 1, but I won't mention in case you haven't figured it out) is also
a central figure. He leads Anakin to the Dark Side.
So there are a number of characters that run throughout the series. Of
course, if a third trilogy would be made, Anakin would not run throughout
the entire series. R2 and 3PO are key, as they are the menial labourers
and comic relief. Lucas has them as storytellers.
So I guess at this point, we can consider this to be the story of Anakin,
as told by the droids.
(Did anyone else stay throughout the credits to hear James Earl Jones'
voiceover??)

So, I guess we were both right in our feelings and interest of waiting to
see for ourselves rather than just going by the reviews.
I think the faults in this film were the same as the others, esp the first
one (episode 4). Especially dragging was the back story that we needed to
fill in. This story has to match up with what we already know. However,
if this was the first SW film you'd have seen, I think you'd be
disappointed. Hard to understand why such lines as "I've got a bad feeling
about this", etc are funny unless you know how cliched they are in this
series.
Yes, the movie moved slow in parts (but so did Episode 4). Yes, Jar Jar
was annoying. I think it's better to have a character that you have no
hope of understanding, like R2 or Chewbacca, than one that speaks just
enough (bad) English to have you trying to understand him. That was
frustrating. Then again, after 100 views of this movie, I am sure we all
will have his dialogue both figured out and memorised.

Well, I read the first three books (haven't read this adaptation yet), and
especially the first one had some background that were nowhere to be seen
in the movie. Some were filmed and cut (the scenes that were re-added last
year), but others were just added scenes. In part, you can do more in a
novel than in a movie. Also, the time constraints are different. I
suspect it's a bit of both. In part, there are scenes that Lucas wrote and
either didn't film or cut in the editing room. But I am sure that Brooks
threw in some background that just wouldn't work in the film medium.
>
>Would it be too much to hope for that Lucas will eventually release a
>director's cut of this on Video (DVD or Laserdisc)?
Oh, don't worry. When interest has lagged in this series, he will suddenly
come out with a new, "special edition"
As for the DVD, I can't believe that Lucas isn't backing the technology,
tho I know that in part it is his doing. But, also, the reaction of Fox to
the technology isn't helping matters. There's Something About Mary hasn't
been released because they fear bootleggers so much. Fox is basically the
only studio not behind the system, and when they do release a DVD version,
their prices are amongst the highest in the industry.

IN BRIEF
_Besieged_ (R) ** 1/2
Thandie Newton stars an African emigre studying for a medical degree in
Rome while her husband remains imprisoned in her homeland. To make ends
meet, she serves as live-in housekeeper to an eccentric British pianist
(David Thewlis), who has fallen hopelessly in love with his married
employee and makes noble, selfless sacrifices to make her happy.
_Besieged_ is indeed a Bernardo Bertolucci film: it features enthralling
location photography (done here by Fabio Cianchetti) and a fairly thin
story (based on a short story by James Lasdun) set to a languid pace. That
latter fact keeps this already-subdued love story at an arm's length
emotionally. Despite a vividly expressive performance by Newton, the lack
of urgency equates to a lack of intimacy.
_The_Love_Letter_ (PG-13) * 1/2
A few nights ago I rewatched one of my favorite films released
domestically last year, the Hong Kong import
_Comrades:_Almost_a_Love_Story_, directed by Peter Ho-sun Chan. This
exquisite romantic drama virtually swept the Hong Kong Film Awards in 1997,
and it's easy to see why--it had every element required for a successful
love story: sympathetic lead characters; well-cast lead actors with a
palpable romantic chemistry; an engaging, believable story; a swoony
musical score; and, crucially, an indefinable sense of magic.
Chan's American debut, _The_Love_Letter_, has only one of these
characteristics: an effective score (composed by Luis Bachalov, Oscar
winner for _Il_Postino_). Everything else leaves a lot to be desired. The
premise is one that Roger Ebert would classify under "idiot plot": a
bookstore owner (a likable Kate Capshaw) in a tiny New England town finds
an anonymous love letter, and she assumes it's from a much-younger employee
(Tom Everett Scott, also likable)--who, in turn, sees the letter and
assumes it's addressed to him from her. "Comical" hijinks ensue, and
they're every bit as strained as one would expect. However, this
May-December affair is not the central romance; the key relationship is
between Capshaw's character and a lovelorn fireman (Tom Selleck), who were
high school flames. To say that Capshaw and the bland Selleck's chemistry
is tepid is to imply a slight hint of warmth that isn't there. Similarly,
to call _The_Love_Letter_ "a romantic comedy-drama" is to imply an
involving emotional core and a witty sense of humor that simply aren't=
there.

Fox's decision to give a brief, barely noticeable theatrical run to this
drama about a single dad (Vince Vaughn, stretching admirably) torn between
his estranged wife (Monica Potter) and a new love (Joey Lauren Adams) was
hardly surprising: the film is as dry as a made-for-TV movie. Which makes
for a strange paradox on video: the wan, simpleminded melodrama plays more
comfortably on the small screen, yet the downsizing just underscores how
similar the film is to an average flick for the tube. (20th Century Fox

Stanley Tucci's short-circuited screwball farce begins promisingly: during
the Depression, two actors (Tucci and Oliver Platt) stow away on an
oceanliner after being falsely accused of assault by another actor (Alfred
Molina). But when the action shifts to the cruise ship, so does the focus,
widening to include an array of eccentric passengers that only marginally
hold any interest. Still, some inspired comic set pieces and performances
make it a fairly safe rent. (20th Century Fox Home Entertainment; DVD also
