there such a list? How much did Star Wars make in the theaters?

Interesting that you should mention that. I read an interview with Lucas
recently about the original movie. He had no idea what he had, and
expected the movie to barely break even. (I'm not sure of the contract,
but think there was some tie-in with profitability). However, he INSISTED
on the merchandising rights, expecting (rightly so on this count) to
literally make a killing. And right he was. As successful as the films
were, I do believe that Lucas himself (and his company) have still
generated the majority of their profits from those "lunchbox sales".
And seeing the interest already in TPM merchandise, there is absolutely no
reason to expect this to be any different. Not only is this going to blow
Cameron right out of the water ($600 million domestic?? Pshaw!), but those
numbers won't even begin to touch the merchandise numbers.

I doubt they'd bother asking for more than the standard. The films
going to make an absolute killing and will make more money in
lunchbox sales than most films will make at the box office in their
entire run.

Because the amount the distributors want back becomes smaller as
time goes on.
> and why does it go back up to 5 dollars
> when they hit the rental stores╔
Because those same distributors charge the video stores upwards of
$100 for a new copy of a just released for rental video. As time
wears on and they get rented to hell and back, then the distribs let
it out to pay TV, where they again charge premium rates, then they
release it for sell-through, laserdiscs, DVD, and finally network
TV.
Is it any wonder they can make a profit on a movie that costs $50m
to make and only brings in $2m at the box office, with that kind of
system geared towards eternal moneymaking?

Having worked in the theater business, I can GUARANTEE that the movie house
chains gets NOTHING from ticket sales... it's all in the popcorn... why do
you think they charge $8 for a bucket and soda? They are not only charging
you for the food, they're charging for the CONTAINERS! You try asking for

The imdb is your friend. Every movie geek should go there before they ask
any questions; this is what the internet is for, my good man! Everything

I just saw that; I think it's because the list address is appearing twice
in the "to:" line. It's appearing as the name of the list and in the

Where does your $9 go? For a major-studio blockbuster, like The Phantom
Menace will likely be, studios get as much as 80 percent of ticket revenues
(or $7.20) for opening weekend, leaving 20 percent (or $1.80) for exhibitors.
Over the film's run, it gets closer to 50-50. But exhibitors often get a
juicier cut of low-budget films to entice them to take chances. And they
keep the loot from there candy sales which usually gives them a lot of money.
Week 1 = 80% Studio / 20% Theater
Week 2 = 70% Studio / 30% Theater
Week 3 = 60% Studio / 40% Theater
Week 4 = 50% Studio / 50% Theater
Weekly breakdowns are estimated. Percentages will vary widely depending on
the film and theater.

My bad. I thought an adjusted chart was at the IMDB. It isn't, though, but
I saw one recently. I combed through my hefty bookmarks, and finally found
it:
http://www.the-movie-times.com/thrsdir/Top10everad.html
that's the top 100 of all time, adjusted for inflation.

No one. All posts by subscribers are posted unless:
1) It is sent by a subscriber using an email address other than the
one she/he signed up with. (Actually, this can be gotten around if
a user notifies me what other email addresses he would like to post
with).
2) It contains a keyword such as s*bscribe or c*ncel, in which case the
messages are returned to me as an admin request and I choose what to
do with them. (Note the *'s used in order for this very message to
be passed on to the list).
3) The message is just too darned big. The limit is currently set at
40k. Anything larger is likely to be a binary, and sending files to
the list is prohibited in the list's charter.

With inflation accounted for, Star Wars blows Titanic away. I think the
average cost for a ticket back in 1976-77 was something like $2!! And
people complained about how high the prices were!!
Of course, the fairest way to judge a movie's success is by ticket sales.
In that case, I do believe Gone With the Wind (back when they were called
Nickelodians for a reason - they cost a nickle!!:-) would be "king of the
world"

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Media mogul Barry Diller is getting back into the
movie business by purchasing the studios October Films and Gramercy
Pictures and part of the PolyGram film business from Seagram Co.
Diller's USA Networks Inc. and Seagram announced the deal Wednesday
without disclosing the purchase price. Sources who insisted on
anonymity put it at between $200 million and $300 million. The
purchase provides Diller - who once ran Paramount Pictures - with a
much-needed movie supply for his cable outlets, USA Network and
Sci-Fi Channel. October and Gramercy are major distributors of art
house films, which offer unconventional themes on relatively small
budgets.

LONDON (AP) - British actor Bob Peck, who played a game warden in
Steven Spielberg's 1993 dinosaur adventure "Jurassic Park," has died
of cancer. He was 53. A television and stage actor in Britain, Peck
died in London on Sunday after fighting the disease for several
years. Peck was born in Leeds in north England, Aug. 23, 1945. He
graduated from Leeds College of Art and was an avid amateur actor
before going to work on the stage professionally. During his career,
Beck acted for the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theater
and starred in more than 20 TV dramas. He was best known in Britain
for his role in the 1985 TV series, "Edge of Darkness."

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Universal Studios plans to sell its interest in
the commercial, music video and talent management businesses of
Propaganda Films Holdings Inc. Entertainment entrepreneur Gary Beer,
cable pioneer Jack Crosby and the investment fund SCP Private Equity
Partners would buy Universal's share under the proposed deal. "This
sale recognizes the value of Propaganda's nonfeature film assets, and
is consistent with Universal's objective of focusing on its core
movie business," said Rick Finkelstein, Universal's senior vice
president for corporate development and strategic planning.
Propaganda Films is an independent Hollywood production company
specializing in commercials, music videos, motion pictures and TV
programming.

Subject: [MV] More beautiful than Andersen and greater than Chaplin
Has everyone watched the movie "Life is Beautiful"?
On the 6th March, the very first day that it was released in Korea, I went to the movie
right away because I had been longing for it since my American friend spoke very highly of the
movie. (I'm a moviegoer as all of you really are. I watched another movie "Shakepere in Love"
in succession on that day. I also loved it. My roommate called me mental patient or psycho for
a joke. She wondered how dare I could think of going to the movies alone on saturday)
Anyway, this film was awarded a special prize from the awarding commitee in the Cannes Film
Festival and has won the major prizes in the 30 international film festival until now.Over the
70 press around the world set high value on this work of ast as one of the best films of the
year. Roberto who directs as well as plays a leading part of the movie won the main actor prize
in the Academy Awards. Almost all the critics have given favorable comment on this movie saying
that it is handling love and tragedy that is extrely divide!
d and it is presenting hunor of Charlie chaplin's style at the same time. However, the most
valuable thing is not what the critics say about the movie but how the audiences feel about
it.There is a beautiful and pure romance like a fairy tale in the first half of the movie and
there is great humanity from the tragedy with the Jewish concentration camp as its setting in
the last half of it.Ironically,I was so moved to tears and laughed. After the movie, my heart
was too full for words. Though it may be a hackneyed expression just to say that it's about
love, I don't think I can find any other proper words for it,because it is true that "Life is
Beautiful"is about LOVE.

I've talked to Lincoln Gasking, the Australian (no, we don't ALL know each
other:-), and am on his mailing list. Also, he is trading me for one of
the official posters (the first one with the kid and the Vader shadow). It
seems like a publicity stunt. He's even had a write-up in the Pittsburgh
papers.
I really don't know anything other than the hype. However, it seems to me
that they are pulling this stunt themselves. They are seeking donations
(the laptops, and the plane ticket to get Gasking to the States), but don't
seem to be very official. I think they are just real big fans, albeit
without lives:-) They have the time to sit in line for over a month (we
all should be so lucky), and want to show how dedicated they are. At least
this is the official line.
Having said that, I do know that they were selling t-shirts (two days only
earlier this week), and the profits went to the same charity that Lucas is
donating the money from the Special Advanced Showings (the ones with $500
tickets. Makes $8-10 suddenly not seem so bad:-) to. That has to make you
wonder. Perhaps they started off independently, and Lucas caught wind,
liked the idea, and is now helping out.
In addition, Gasking is staying in the hotel across the street from the
theatre. I have the feeling that this is not a Motel 6 (and even that gets
pricey after a month:-), and thus also wonder who's paying that bill.
That's what I know, or think I know.

OK, here's some background on this Line-Up thingy. This is the latest
newsletter. Since they even ask for this to be forwarded, I guess there is
no reason to worry about sending it along.
Not a lot of background, but as you can see, they are getting so much free
